A rating of seven signifies that a smartphone can be briefly submerged in shallow water, while a rating of eight means it can withstand deeper water but the increase in depth can vary. <br /><br />The iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra both have an IP68 rating, indicating protection against dust and the ability to withstand submersion in water. However, it's not as simple as assuming they have the same level of water resistance.<br /><br />According to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a device with an 8 rating should be able to withstand being submerged in at least one meter of water for 30 minutes. <br /><br />However, the depth and duration of water exposure can vary depending on the manufacturer. Or at least on a boat.)</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, you might think that if your phone can be underwater for a half hour, you don't have much to worry about from a bit of rain or a spilled glass of water. And you probably don't, in fact, but it's better to play it safe. Apple's warranty does not cover issues caused by water, so if your phone is damaged by water in spite of that water resistance, you're left holding the bag, so to speak.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And over time, the water-resistant capabilities of your phone wear down. The rubber gaskets that seal out liquid at the lightning cable port, the SIM card slot, and around the buttons slowly degrades, losing water-blocking ability. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also note that when we talk about water resistance, we're talking about clean freshwater, as far as Apple is concerned. They make no claims about the phone's resistance to damage caused by salt water or any other liquids, like coffee, motor oil, or Red Bull, to name a few of the fluids out there other than pure </span><a href="http://mentalfloss.com/article/501907/14-year-old-who-convinced-people-ban-dihydrogen-monoxide"><span style="font-weight: 400;">dihydrogen monoxide</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p><h2><strong>Prevent damage after your phone gets wet</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And one note you need to make sure to remember: after your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/iphone">iPhone</a> gets wet, whether from rain, a spilled beverage, or a total toilet submersion, don't plug anything into it until you are certain it's dry again. But having that extra bit of protection may be a good idea for those who suffer from slippery fingers around expensive electronic devices. Especially if you're the type of skip on insurance, or yours doesn't cover water damage.</span></p><h2><strong>How the Pixel 3 stacks up to its competition</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For comparison's sake, both the upcoming </span><a href="https://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-s10/specs/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Galaxy S10</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and the </span><a href="https://www.apple.com/iphone-xs/specs/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">iPhone XS</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> carry the same IP68 rating as the Pixel 3. knowing my device was "water-resistant" (it did have workout options for swimming, after all) but not much else. </span></p><h2><strong>Apple Watches are varying degrees of style="font-weight: 400;">as Apple is careful to distinguish</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">). </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In technical terms, the original Apple Watch and Series 1 have a water resistance rating of IPX7 under </span><a href="https://www.iec.ch/index.htm"><span style="font-weight: 400;">IEC</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard 60529, and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077QGL597/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bi_032519_apple-watch-waterproof-test-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B077QGL597&amp;linkId=d35d4c78d034c7cc0a6ff02a9ab234fa" 22810:2010</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In short, wearing your Apple Watch while exercising (and thus exposing it to sweat) is okay, wearing it on a rainy day is okay, and even swimming with it is okay. But wearing it while scuba diving or water skiing (submerging the watch below a shallow depth or exposing it to high velocity water) is not. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you're still wearing a 1st generation Apple Watch or Series 1, however, you need to be a bit more careful. Apple does not recommend </span><a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205000"><span style="font-weight: 400;">submerging your Apple Watch or Series 1 watches under water</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, though both models are splash- and water-resistant.</span></p><h3><strong>You probably shouldn't shower with your Apple Watch</strong></h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While showering with your Apple Watch (<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077QGL597/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bi_032519_apple-watch-waterproof-test-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B077QGL597&amp;linkId=d35d4c78d034c7cc0a6ff02a9ab234fa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Series 2</a>, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K39FRSL/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bi_032519_apple-watch-waterproof-test-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07K39FRSL&amp;linkId=04d22c28bf0b230e280de674bc8ede97">3</a>, and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HDHLPBM/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bi_032519_apple-watch-waterproof-test-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07HDHLPBM&amp;linkId=8fe56cfb5237088145518f306f005414">4</a>) is okay in theory, you'll probably want to take off your Apple Watch during this particular activity because exposure to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and perfumes can affect the efficacy of water seals and acoustic membranes (leading to muffled speaker sounds). The chemicals in shampoo and soap can also </span><a href="https://www.cnet.com/how-to/is-your-apple-watch-waterproof-it-depends/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reduce your Apple Watch's water resistance as a whole.</span></a></p><h2><strong>Water resistance is a feature that can irreversibly fade over time</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Apple notes that </span><a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205000"><span style="font-weight: 400;">"water resistance isn't a permanent condition and may diminish over time,"</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> adding that the Apple Watch cannot be rechecked or re-sealed for water resistance. The company lists a number of activities that can affect water resistance properties and should therefore be avoided.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The list includes dropping Apple Watch "or subjecting it to other impacts" (ouch), wearing it in a sauna or steam room, and exposure to soap (or soapy water), perfume, solvents, detergent, acids (or acidic foods), insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, oil, and hair dye. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's important to note that not all bands are water-resistant, like those made with stainless steel and leather.
