It can fit more seats and is more marketable to more people than a costly first-class ticket.But many global carriers in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are taking the opposite approach, chasing dollar signs with new first-class cabins amid a post-pandemic industry shift that's seen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-airline-first-class-suites-in-world-2023-8">increasing demand for luxury at the front of the plane</a>.This includes multimillion-dollar revamp plans in a bid to lure more customers, keep up with the competition, and boost revenue and reputations. While these carriers still have business class, true first class remains a money-maker despite taking up the least amount of cabin real estate.Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/03/15/qatar-airways-to-launch-first-class-as-airline-courts-airbus-and-boeing-for-new-planes.html?utm_source=syndication">CNBC</a> in March that the airline's first class is here to stay. This was a U-turn from his predecessor, who said in 2023 that first class wasn't necessary with that carrier's famous <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qatar-airways-business-class-qsuite-next-gen-photos-2024-7">Q-Suite business class.</a>Five-star Singapore Airlines also plans to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-new-first-class-business-upgrades-privacy-door-trend-2024-11">launch a new first class</a> as part of an over $800 million cabin overhaul project. Air France, Swiss International Air Lines, and Lufthansa are also in the mix, among others.<div type="image" title="Swiss' new first-class." height="744" width="992" msid="115064431" hostid="261" sizebytes="49628"></div>A study from Mighty Travels Premium, published in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mightytravels.com/2024/10/who-really-flies-first-class-data-shows-67-are-corporate-travelers-not-wealthy-individuals/#Who-Really-Flies-First-ClassData-Shows-67-are-Corporate-Travelers-Not-Wealthy-Individuals-International-Routes-Report-Higher-Individual-First-Class-Bookings-Than-Domestic">October,</a> showed that the first-class resurgence is largely corporate travelers from monied Fortune 500 companies.The study, which analyzed airline revenue data, saw a jump in international bookings from affluent leisure individuals willing to pay a premium for the posh perks.First-class transatlantic fares averaged about $2,900 one-way between January and August, not including taxes and fees, according to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium. But that can be a lot higher on more luxury-focused airlines.Tiffany Funk, an analyst from the travel website <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.point.me/">Point.me</a>, told Business Insider that a drive behind Singapore's new first-class is partly from ultra-wealthy people who want to fly in style but can't reach certain <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-a-50-million-bombardier-global-5000-private-jet-2022-5">destinations with a private jet.</a>"Singapore adding first-class speaks to its demographics," she said. On a day-to-day basis, they run the company by the same name, with investments in an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/critical-role-daggerheart-preorders-2024-9">in-house game publishing arm</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/critical-role-liam-obrien-moonward-podcast-book-publishing-comics-media-2024-8">new audio dramas</a>. "So to know that we're in that position where we've created a story together that is now of such worth to people all over the planet is just such a gift."Now they have a wish list of locations their live shows could go to in the months and years to come, Willingham said. "I loved all of the really intimate moments. I loved all the really tragic moments. It was horrible and wonderful to get to go down that path again."Ephraim Chua, 32, told BI he's excited to see how CR has adapted its main campaigns for the animated series. It has been edited for length and clarity. A sign on the wall at the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/fitness/best-weight-loss-apps">weight management </a>clinic inspires me every time I go for my body composite exam. "Being overweight is hard," it says. "Losing weight is hard," it says. Then, underneath, it says, "Choose your hard." It's empowering because it lets you know it's your choice whether to stay heavy or make every effort to get healthy and feel better. I'm just 12 pounds off my goal of 218 pounds — which means I will have lost 285 pounds since beginning my journey in July 2021 — and I'm determined to reach that number on the scale. It's been the toughest battle of my life. But I know that it is literally saving my life. <h2>I've always been big</h2>I've always been a big person. I was a 10-pound baby and 23.5 inches long. I stopped growing at 6ft 2in tall — the same height as my dad. It runs in the family. One of my sons is 6ft 5in. But I'm overweight because I always eat my feelings. Whenever I felt emotional — if something was wrong and I was unable to deal with it — I'd reach for something to eat. My parents were concerned about my size when I was a child. They <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pediatrician-mom-parenting-advice-basics-essentials-2024-1">took me to the pediatrician</a> for advice. I felt confused in the doctor's office when I was in elementary school because they mentioned words like diabetes. We tried to work on things like portion control, but it wasn't easy. We would eat inexpensive things like pasta in a big dish in the center of the table. <h2>I was a yo-yo dieter</h2>Carbohydrates were not good for me, but I hated being singled out as the one who wasn't supposed to take as much as the others. Then, when I was 10, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ive-been-through-divorce-on-both-ends-2023-4">my parents got divorced</a>. It was an emotional upheaval. The summer between fifth and sixth grade, I gained probably 35 to 40 pounds. Other kids said some nasty things to me, especially in middle school. But I was 6ft tall by 12 and able to defend myself physically. If there were a problem, I'd say, "No, you're not going to do that to me." Instead, I internalized my pain. I gave birth to my first child at 20 after putting on a lot of weight during the pregnancy. The same thing happened with my other two kids. Diets have come and gone over the years. They generally involve calorie counting and walking. I once lost over 110 pounds and kept it off for six years, but whenever something went wrong in my life, I'd put it back on. <h2>I was shocked when I registered 500 pounds on the scale</h2>I couldn't move the way I felt like I should be able to move and not be uncomfortable. I'd go up and down the stairs at work and get winded. Things came to a head in July 2021 when I saw my doctor for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-entertainment-is-back-with-no-masks-or-social-distancing-2021-9">the first time since COVID-19</a>. I stepped on the scale and felt mortified. I was 499.9 pounds. "How the heck did this happen?" I thought. I didn't cry but wanted to crawl into a hole somewhere. I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diabetes-risk-other-health-condition-complication-study-2022-3">diagnosed with type 2 diabetes </a>and prescribed medication to lower my blood sugar. I managed to lose 84 pounds before qualifying for an appointment at a weight management clinic in March 2022. The main reason I lost that initial weight was dental work. My teeth were bad from so many years of abuse and loss of enamel. I got dentures, which allowed me to chew healthy, crunchy food like apples. But weight management opened up everything for me. They said I was a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/traveled-to-mexico-for-gastric-bypass-surgery-results-2023-4">good candidate for stomach surgery,</a> but I opted out. I underwent therapy, knowing that my brain needed to change my eating habits, not a quick-fix operation. <div type="image" title="A woman in a blue T-shirt carrying a small dog." height="697" width="929" msid="115024370" hostid="261"></div>The doctor put me on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weight-loss-glp-1-drugs-ozempic-wegovy-mounjaro-effects-future-2023-12" target="_blank">GLP-1 agonist injections</a> Trulicity and then Mounjaro. However, I realized that all the medications in the world wouldn't help me unless I learned the foundations of a healthy lifestyle. My intent was to lose the weight and keep it off. The answers included eating on a schedule. I eat a certain amount — a small meal of around 300 calories — every two and a half hours. It could be a protein shake or yogurt with a couple of strawberries. It could be a quarter of a cup of the leanest ground beef you can get with steamed vegetables. I limit my carbohydrates and increase my protein intake, such as turkey. I've also learned to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. I buy the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-costco-kirkland-signature-prepared-meals-from-family-which-to-skip">mixed stir fry from Costco </a>without sauce. For exercise, my husband, Steph, 54, and I set up a gym in our spare room. I ride the recumbent bike for an hour and 15 minutes and do 750 calf raises seven days a week. I also do 200 sit-ups and 200 crunches five days a week. Now, at 230 pounds, I've gone from a 6X to a 1X. I can wear jeans for the first time in years, lace up my tennis shoes, and carry my dog, <keyword id="20150266" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toby" source="keywords">Toby</keyword>, a 19-year-old <keyword id="23853546" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="yorkie" source="keywords">Yorkie</keyword>, up and down the stairs 30 times a day. <h2>I'm struggling with body dysmorphia</h2>Unfortunately, I continue to struggle with body image. When they're telling you to lose weight, nobody points out you're probably going to have at least 20 pounds worth of skin hanging on your arms, legs, and stomach. Your clothing doesn't look right and it's uncomfortable because it causes irritation, even infection. Luckily, I have a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-topical-steroid-withdrawal-how-treat-tws-symptoms-2023-7">cortisone prescription</a> from my dermatologist. I'll see my 500-pound self in the mirror. I often feel like I haven't lost much weight at all. It's only when I compare my before-and-after photos that I really notice the difference. People said I should consider plastic surgery. But I have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/anesthesia-side-effects">trouble thinking about anesthesia</a>. Still, my confidence grows every day. Steph is prouder of me than I am of myself at the moment, but I'm getting there. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Amazon's sales of cheap items are surging, driven by faster delivery speeds, executive says.</li><li>Amazon's essential product sales are growing 50% faster than other items.</li></ul>The sales of cheaper items are surging on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-explains-why-he-wants-fewer-managers-hate-bureaucracy-2024-11">Amazon</a>.During a recent internal all-hands meeting, Amazon's retail CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/profile-of-amazons-new-retail-ceo-doug-herrington-2022-7">Doug Herrington</a> said that the everyday essentials business, which includes health, beauty, and grocery products, is "growing 50% faster than the rest of the store," according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider.The growth is primarily driven by faster delivery speeds because people tend to spend more and shop more frequently when orders arrive quickly, Herrington said. Over 50% of those everyday essentials are now delivered on the same or next day, he added."It has really supercharged our grocery and everyday essential business," Herrington said, referring to faster shipping speeds. "And these are especially the low-priced everyday essentials, the things that most households purchase every week."Amazon has been investing heavily to make its warehouse and logistics network more regional. The goal has been to not only speed up deliveries, but also make it less expensive for the company to offer faster delivery.<h2 id="c0dfe482-5c31-44d1-a35d-fdfab5fe3a43">No longer "CRaP"</h2>Lower costs help Amazon offer cheaper products, which often come with thinner profit margins. This is a notable shift from the company's previous strategy of curbing sales of such products. Internally, Amazon used to refer to these products as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-wants-to-stop-selling-unprofitable-items-report-2018-12">"CRaP," or "can't realize a profit,"</a> because they were relatively expensive to ship and less profitable.Amazon's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-andy-jassy-wooed-wall-street-overhauled-bloated-tech-giant-2024-7">record profits</a> in recent years, alongside <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs-10000-employees-grand-challenge-team-dramatic-changes-2022-11">drastic cost cuts</a> and major layoffs, are also contributing to the new approach. The change can potentially help Amazon better compete against Chinese e-commerce upstarts Temu and Shein, which are rapidly growing on the back of cheap items. Shein, for example, is expanding to sell more daily essentials, like toothpaste, skincare, and toys, Reuters reported.Amazon's spokesperson declined to comment.<h2 id="27100129-02ac-43d6-9461-8899978fdf94">'Perfect placement'</h2>During the recent all-hands meeting, Herrington said Amazon deliveries have become faster and cheaper after the company redesigned its network of warehouses to serve smaller regions. Now, Amazon has more warehouses assigned to customers close by, which allows for faster order fulfillment.As a result, Amazon has been able to reduce the "cost to serve" each order for two years in a row, while achieving the fastest delivery speeds for Prime shipments this year, Herrington added."We call that effort perfect placement," Herrington said.In October, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company has been "maniacal" about lowering the cost to serve in recent years. It's a real competitive advantage because now Amazon can afford to sell lower-priced items economically, he said."There's an expression that we've used a lot of times over the years that it's easy to lower prices, but it's much harder to be able to afford to lower prices," Jassy said during a call with analysts.<h2 id="c402255a-a3e2-42e8-8f7f-81912d344b85">'Real positive'</h2>During last month's analyst call, Jassy added that the growth of cheaper items is a "real positive" because it is predicated on faster delivery speeds. He said that this usually leads to growth in customer loyalty, order frequency, and purchase volume."We see the ability to unlock whole new elements of the consumer spend," Jassy said.Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's CFO, added that strong growth in everyday essentials is a positive sign of Amazon becoming a part of consumers' daily shopping habits.Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a recent note that the shift is important for Amazon, especially since its most loyal Prime membership base is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-growth-takes-off-again-record-75-americans-use-2024-4">growing at a slower pace</a>."While the growth in those categories represents a negative mix shift in terms of margins, it increases shopper loyalty, shopping frequency and increases the basket size — important if the total Prime HH membership base in the US is maturing," Mahaney wrote.Amazon is doubling down on these efforts. Herrington said in the recent all-hands meeting that Amazon is investing in new warehouse robotics technology that can further improve packaging speed. 'Never spoke ill of anyone, much to learn from him': Diljit Dosanjh halts Germany concert to pay tribute to Ratan Tata

Tesla attracts millions of job seekers annually. The few who receive offers typically face a calculated gamble: Accept lower base pay up front for the chance of a potentially lucrative future payout.Business Insider secured access to an internal Tesla pay database, covering nearly 100,000 employees as of December 2021. That data, along with public filings and interviews with people who have worked for the automaker, reveal the company's pay strategy. Tesla offers lower base salaries than its tech and automotive peers but offers substantial stock grants.Even Tesla's top earners must bet on the company. This high-risk, high-reward system is coupled with a selective hiring process that has in the past included <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-email-tesla-approve-new-hires-2023-5">Elon Musk's sign-off for every hire</a>.Using Tesla's internal salary database, BI looked at median base pay for the roughly 13,000 full-time, salaried, US-based employees across the internal job categories that Tesla uses to define workers in business units, such as engineering, manufacturing, or data management. (BI excluded pay for hourly workers, many of whom work in manufacturing, as it was not possible to accurately calculate their median annual pay based on hourly payroll data.)BI further broke down the data to look at median base pay by job title, analyzing the numbers for full-time, US-based, salaried roles with at least five employees.The base pay for these titles, which include directors of engineering and managers who work in Tesla's service centers fixing vehicles, ranges from about $35,000 to $324,000, according to the data.Nine current and former workers told BI the pay structure has largely remained in place since December 2021 and is ultimately part of Musk's quest to hire only the most <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-twitter-tesla-staff-be-hardcore-old-email-2022-11">"hardcore" workers</a>."The whole system is set up to find the fanatics," a current Tesla worker with knowledge of the company's hiring process said. "They could get better pay somewhere else, but we want the people who are die-hard Tesla."A former Tesla recruiter who worked with the company until 2024 said the automaker's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-hired-at-tesla-job-interview-process">interview process</a> for engineers — which typically entails at least nine interviews and can take months — and the company's pay structure are designed to weed out workers who are looking to just "clock in and clock out.""It's a culture thing," the former recruiter said. "It's not even about how smart you are or how much you know. They're looking for a willingness to learn and put in the extra hours."Tesla, Musk, and the company's board of directors did not respond to requests for comment.In a December 2023 <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1318605/000162828024002390/tsla-20231231.htm">regulatory filing</a>, Tesla reported it employed more than 140,000 people worldwide. In April, Tesla told staff it planned to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sent-tesla-employees-email-announcing-layoffs-read-memo-2024-4">cut more than 10% of its workforce</a>. A June <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/21/tesla-has-downsized-by-at-least-14percent-this-year-internal-number-shows.html#:~:text=Tesla%20internal%20records%20viewed%20by,includes%20hourly%20and%20salaried%20workers.">estimate</a> from CNBC placed Tesla's headcount at just over 120,000.Using separate data from the Securities and Exchange Commission, BI compared the company's median base pay with that of traditional automakers and the six largest tech firms by market cap. Tesla lags behind all of them except Amazon. While there are a variety of factors that can affect a company's median salary — for example, Amazon's large warehouse workforce or Apple's large retail workforce — the data is consistent with what four current and former Tesla employees say: Tesla's base salaries are generally less than competitors'.Nvidia, Ford, Meta, and Amazon declined to comment on their employee compensation packages. Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet did not respond to a request for comment. GM said it has doubled its staff in Silicon Valley over the past six months and is competitive in hiring talent away from tech firms.Nine current and former people in engineering and sales said that Tesla's stock grants make it easier to accept lower base salaries. Tesla stock could make them rich, if only on paper. On November 8, the automaker's stock surged more 8% in the wake of Donald Trump's re-election, hitting a market cap of $1 trillion.Some Tesla employees can receive millions of dollars in stock. In 2020 and 2021, 44 US-based employees were offered stock worth more than $1 million, according to the database.To get a sense of which employees were more likely to take home large grants, BI broke up stock grants based on job category. The data show that most workers in engineering received stock grants above $25,000. The value of the stock is based on the value of the shares at the time they were granted, but it's subject to change based on Tesla's share price.Of the stock offerings at Tesla, about 75% were restricted stock units, or RSUs, while nonqualified stock options made up 21%, and were given exclusively as merit-based compensation, according to BI's analysis of US-based, full-time workers. Only 4% of employees — including many executives and other high-level workers — received the stock as incentive stock options, or ISOs.Zaheer Mohiuddin, the cofounder of <a target="_blank" href="http://Levels.fyi">Levels.fyi</a>, said RSUs are very common in tech, while incentive stock options are typically reserved for longtime high-level employees or nonpublic companies. RSUs are typically included in standard compensation packages, while nonqualified stock options and ISOs are often used as additional incentives.RSUs give employees actual shares that vest over time, while ISOs simply provide the right to purchase stock at a preset price before expiration — which is potentially profitable if the stock price rises above that level, but also requires the employee to have money on hand to pay for the stock in the first place.Outside of one person within Tesla's executive job category who had no stock amount listed, Tesla executives received stock offerings worth between $950,000 and $20 million, according to the database, which displayed the latest stock amount for each employee as of December 2021. All but one of the executives' offerings were ISOs.Tesla is far from the first company to enhance base pay with stock grants. Companies like Meta, Google, and Amazon have been known to offer employees healthy stock grants. Employee survey data from 2024 from the compensation-benchmarking company <a target="_blank" href="http://Levels.fyi">Levels.fyi</a> found that Tesla's median base pay and stock grants for US-based software engineers are slightly lower than that of US-based software engineers at Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Alphabet, collectively.Over the past five years, Tesla's stock has spiked well over 1,000%; that performance potentially makes those grants attractive.Greg Selker, a managing director at the executive recruitment firm Stanton Chase, told BI that while other Big Tech companies might have higher base pay and equity grants to match, Tesla's strength also lies in its image."There's a mission-driven element to it that allows Tesla to get away with paying less," Selker said. "These people are working to bring about the decarbonization of the planet."Musk has previously described what the stock options can do for employees. "We give everyone stock options; we've made many people who are just working the line — who didn't even know what stocks were — we've made them millionaires," he <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2023/11/30/tesla-elon-mus-unionize-staff-millionaires-stock-options/">said</a> last year.BI examined the median stock grants and the percentage of employees who received grants for each job category and found that a majority of workers in nearly every category received some type of stock grant.Tesla's pay strategy has more in common with other Silicon Valley companies like Google or Meta than it does with traditional automakers, Harley Shaiken, an auto industry and labor expert, told BI. Traditional automakers like GM or Ford rely on higher base pay while companies like Tesla, which has seen higher stock returns over the past five years, can attract talent through stock grants, Shaiken said."Tech workers are looking for the opportunity for a big payday, not just an incremental salary bump," he said.One former sales manager said Tesla's stock offerings initially attracted him to the role, but he compared them to "golden handcuffs.""The stock is the major hook. You might be unhappy in your role, but you just decide, 'I'm going to keep my head down and wait a few months longer until I vest,'" he said.Tesla's stock offerings have given some workers opportunities for major paydays. "You might have to deal with the aches and pains of a startup — the long hours, some of the uncertainty — but there can also be a significant payoff."Aaron Greenspan, a vocal critic of Musk and the founder of PlainSite, an organization that provides access to legal documents and advocates for legal transparency, first referenced Afshar's stock grant in a lawsuit filed against defendants including Musk and Tesla, accusing them of defamation, among other claims. Lawyers for Musk and Tesla have called his claims "largely unintelligible allegations." The lawsuit is ongoing.Tesla awards stock grants with promotions and annual reviews and bases them on the company's performance, according to the salary database and conversations with four current employees. Internal Tesla salary database shows Elon Musk's strategy: Lower salaries, bigger stock grants

The department for promotion of industry and internal trade (<keyword id="19952901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DPIIT" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="DPIIT" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="DPIIT">DPIIT</keyword>) on Monday asked <keyword id="19957196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="white-goods" source="keywords">white goods</keyword> manufacturers to participate in large numbers to avail fiscal benefits under the <keyword id="19952889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive" source="keywords">production linked incentive</keyword> scheme for the sector as the response has been muted so far. Additional Secretary in the DPIIT Rajeev Singh Thakur said that the department has again reopened the application window for the PLI (production linked incentive) scheme for white goods (<keyword id="20360726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ACs" source="keywords">ACs</keyword> and LED lights). The application window is open from July 15 to October 12. "In the PLI in white goods scheme, somehow the response has been muted. ...Probably due to various reasons not sufficient response has come. So I request (the industry) to have a look and probably this time, you can consider (applying)," Thakur said at the CII Consumer Electronics and Durables Summit 2024 here. So far, 66 applicants with committed investment of Rs 6,962 crore have been selected as beneficiaries under the PLI scheme. The Union Cabinet had given approval for the PLI scheme for white goods for <keyword id="19914449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="keywords">manufacturing</keyword> of components and sub-assemblies of Air Conditioners (ACs) and LED lights on April 7, 2021. The scheme is to be implemented over a seven-year period, from 2021-22 to 2028-29, and has an outlay of Rs 6,238 crore. He added that the department can hold talks with the industry separately on issues like quality control orders and logistics. Thakur told the industry that the time is right to increase investments into the country as the government has enhanced its capex and taken steps to promote <keyword id="19996629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ease-of-doing-business" source="keywords">ease of doing business</keyword>. The public capex in the last 10 years is growing at a fast pace in areas like highways, expressway, ports, airports and railways, but the commensurate response of the private sector "somehow is not up to the expectation", he said. Earlier speaking at the event, DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia said that a lot of steps have been taken to promote ease of doing business, cutting down compliance burden and decriminalisation of minor offences. The government has also recently approved 12 industrial townships and the industry can look at investing there. He added that capital availability is not an issue now and the government has also provided protection to the industry from predatory imports. Schemes like PLI and semiconductor mission have been rolled out to promote manufacturing and "now we want the industry" to ensure that they have necessary collaborations in place for technology and investments. The industry should do collaborations not only to target the domestic market but also become part of global value chains. "That is an expectation we are having from the entire industry and I think industry will rise to meet these expectations... We have a huge demographic dividend and the industry should take advantage of this otherwise we will miss it," Bhatia added. He also said that there is no paucity of adequate skilled labour in the country and logistics costs too are coming down. On logistics, he cited examples of Amazon and Flipkart selling goods in the remotest part of the country. "I don't think industry should look at the current domestic demand only for collaborations. They should look at the future and export market also in addition to the domestic market," he said, adding expenditure on research and development is "abysmally" low and that needs to be enhanced. Govt asks white goods industry to apply for manufacturing sops in large numbers

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Attorneys general from 14 states are suing TikTok for harming children's mental health.</li><li>Internal research accidentally revealed this week indicates TikTok knew its algorithm was harmful.</li></ul>Details from a multi-state investigation into TikTok accidentally became public this week, revealing officials at the wildly popular video app knew they were harming American teens, according to a new report.The incriminating internal documents became public when reporters for Kentucky Public Radio realized that redacted sections of court documents instantly became unredacted when copied and pasted into a new text file, NPR reported Friday.The court documents were from Kentucky's portion of Tuesday's coordinated <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ny-ag-letitia-james-stealth-trump-fraud-tiktok-2024-10">14-state effort to sue TikTok</a> for what officials say is an addictive algorithm that endangers the mental and physical health of the children who use the app.According to NPR, TikTok's internal documents show officials at parent company ByteDance discussing internal studies that show the app can harm children.Young users can become addicted to the app after viewing 260 videos on the platform, TikTok employees determined, according to the documents. Given most TikTok videos are about 8 seconds, Kentucky's authorities calculated that a child could be addicted after just 35 minutes of using the app.NPR says that in one of the newly revealed internal documents, TikTok employees say that heavy use of the app "correlates with a slew of negative mental health effects like loss of analytical skills, memory formation, contextual thinking, conversational depth, empathy, and increased anxiety."Adam Wandt, an associate professor and deputy chair for technology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told Business Insider that copy-and-paste redaction errors are very common in the US court system and that he has encountered dozens of similar instances."Redacting documents is fairly difficult," Wandt said. "Very often what you have is people just putting black bars in PDFs, or black text, but the text still remains."In a statement to BI on Friday, a spokesperson said it is "highly irresponsible of NPR to publish information that is under a court seal.""Unfortunately, this complaint cherry-picks misleading quotes and takes outdated documents out of context to misrepresent our commitment to community safety," a spokesperson for the company said. "We have robust safeguards, which include proactively removing suspected underage users, and we have voluntarily launched safety features such as default screentime limits, family pairing, and privacy by default for minors under 16. We stand by these efforts."TikTok has disputed the claims made in the state lawsuits, saying through a spokesperson on Tuesday that the app protects its youngest users through "robust safeguards."According to NPR, the unredacted internal documents show that TikTok touted its tools for limiting teens' screen time despite knowing from its own research that these features had "little impact."Jayne Conroy, an attorney at Simmons Hanly Conroy, which represents some 50 plaintiffs in a class-action liability lawsuit accusing social media platforms of harming children, said the internal documents uncovered in the state investigations show that tech companies purposefully design products to "relentlessly engage and exploit the adolescent brain.""They have repeatedly worked to maximize both user engagement and profits, all at the expense of our young people's mental health, Conroy told BI. "That these companies knew and ignored this harm is exactly consistent with the allegations in our complaint," she said.Wandt told BI that the content of the documents is "not surprising at all."TikTok's policies forbid users under 13 from making an account, but the unredacted internal documents show that TikTok tells moderators to use caution when removing accounts, according to NPR. One internal document reveals that TikTok tells its moderators to not take action on reports of underage users unless the account identifies them as under 13, NPR reported.Wandt said it is "definitely within TikTok's ability to prevent minors under a certain age from using their app.""However, from a business point of view, it's not necessarily in their business interest," he said. He called TikTok's algorithm "one of the most dangerous influences on the planet right now" for children."So they have half-baked measures put in place and policies that they know don't work, and it doesn't surprise me one bit that their own internal research shows that it doesn't work because they really have no incentive to fix the issues," he said.Matthew Bergman, a founding attorney of the Social Media Victims Law Center, which represents over 3,000 plaintiffs in cases of adolescents harmed by social media, told BI that the unsealed information is "certainly consistent with what we're seeing" across TikTok and other social media."They design these products to be addictive, including through their endless scrolls," Bergman said. "They make their money by showing kids not what they want to see but what they can't look away from."
