<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="13645969" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports-council-international" source="Orion">Airports Council International</keyword> revealed the top 10 <keyword id="13645970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="busiest-airports" source="Orion">busiest airports</keyword> in the world, with eight being in the US.</li><li><keyword id="12412329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hartsfield-jackson-atlanta-international-airport" source="Orion">Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport</keyword> reclaimed the number one spot after temporarily losing it in 2020.</li></ul><p>The US is now home to eight of the 10 busiest <keyword id="11921290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports" source="Orion">airports</keyword> in the world, according to <a href="https://aci.aero/2022/04/11/the-top-10-busiest-airports-in-the-world-revealed/">a new report by Airports Council International</a> compiling 2021 flight data.</p><p>According to ACI, a global organization of airport authorities, global airports saw 4.5 billion passengers in 2021, with the top 10 handling 10% of that, or 463 million people. Eight of those were in the US, with the other two airports in China. </p><p>Passenger traffic in the top 10 has outpaced 2020 by 51.8%, though it still lags behind 2019 numbers by 29.1%, ACI revealed. Nevertheless, <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> is bouncing back and the industry is optimistic about the continued recovery in 2022, with US airlines including Alaska, Southwest, and JetBlue on track to top 2019 capacity this summer, <a href="https://twitter.com/lesliejosephs/status/1511304069205344256">according to financial services company Cowen</a>.</p><p>"The ACI World passenger traffic rankings tell the story of an encouraging trend of recovery, with most of the recurrent busiest airports pre-COVID-19 back at the top," ACI World director general Luis Felipe de Oliveira said in a press release. "Although we are cautious that recovery could face multiple headwinds, the momentum created by reopening plans by countries could lead to an uptick in travel in the second half of 2022."</p><p>The busiest airports in the world were dominated by domestic traffic, which has led the global travel recovery, according to ACI. The international segment has been slower to recover due to continued quarantine requirements and border closures, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-new-zealand-launching-long-route-east-coast-south-pacific-2022-3">though most of the world's nations have opened or plan to open by summer</a>.</p><p><keyword id="12466712" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="orlando-international-airport" source="Orion">Orlando International Airport</keyword> was the most-improved airport on the list in terms of passenger volume, jumping 20 spots from 27 in 2020 to seven in 2021, ACI revealed. <a href="https://www.clickorlando.com/news/local/2022/02/14/up-up-and-away-orlando-international-airport-named-7th-busiest-airport-in-us/">According to local media reports</a>, the increase can be attributed to the airport reopening to international travel to places like Brazil and England, which brought in nearly two million people in 2021, and increased international traffic by 20.5% compared to 2020.</p><p>Take a closer look at the top eight busiest airports in the world.</p><h2>10. Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Las Vegas airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921674" hostid="261"></div><p>Just under 40 million travelers passed through Las Vegas airport last year, with the airport seeing the second-biggest increase in passenger traffic compared to 2020 at 78.6%. Volume fell 23.1% percent compared to 2019 despite the uptick in travel. Allegiant uses Las Vegas as a major hub and operating base.</p><h2>9. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Chengdu Airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921675" hostid="261"></div><p>Chengdu Airport managed just over 40 million travelers in 2021, which was actually a 1.5% decrease from 2020, and 28.2% below 2019 levels. The airport is home to several Asian carriers, including Air China, Chengdu Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Tibet Airlines, Lucky Air, and Shenzhen Airlines.</p><h2>8. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Guangzhou Airport." height="724" width="965" msid="90921676" hostid="261"></div><p>Guangzhou was the busiest airport in the world in 2020, stealing the title from Atlanta. The airport managed about 4.2 million passengers in 2021, however, it saw the biggest drop in passenger volume from last year compared to other airports on the list, with an 8% decrease. It was also 45.1% below 2019 levels. Guangzhou is a hub for China Southern Airlines, 9 Air, FedEx Express, Shenzhen Airlines, and Hainan Airlines.</p><h2>7. <keyword id="11912176" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="orlando" source="Orion">Orlando</keyword> International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Orlando International Airport." height="607" width="810" msid="90921677" hostid="261"></div><p>Orlando handled about 40.3 million passengers last year, seeing the biggest rise in passenger traffic at 86.7%, which can be attributed to the popular beaches and theme parks that Florida has to offer. Despite the rise, Orlando's volume fell 20.3% compared to 2019. No major airline uses the airport as a hub.</p><h2>6. Charlotte Douglas International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Charlotte airport." height="743" width="991" msid="90921678" hostid="261"></div><p>Charlotte handled about 43.3 million passengers in 2021, which is 59.2% more than in 2020, but still 13.4% fewer passengers than in 2019. The airport has improved the most in terms of busiest airport rankings, having come in at number 34 in 2019. Charlotte is a major hub for American Airlines.</p><h2>5. Los Angeles International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Los Angeles International Airport" height="724" width="965" msid="90921680" hostid="261"></div><p>Los Angeles handled 48 million travelers in 2021, which was a 66.8% increase in traffic compared to 2020. Despite the high volume, Los Angeles' passenger traffic was 45.5% below 2019 levels, which was the biggest drop of any airport on the list. The airport is a hub for several carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, American, and Delta Air Lines.</p><h2>4. India’s own <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> International Airport (BIAL) has announced its plans of upgrading security measures to include <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/bengaluru-airport-to-launch-facial-recognition-facility-from-2019/articleshow/65707365.cms">biometric self-boarding technology</a>, or simply put, facial recognition. <br /><br />In a partnership with Vision-Box, a biometrics solutions service provider, BIAL has plans of rolling out paperless boarding for select airlines starting next year. The initiative is in-line with the government’s DigiYatra scheme that aims to minimise paperwork for air travel under a digital system for airport entry and boarding flights.<br /><br /><strong>India’s first paperless airport<br /></strong><br />Facial recognition seems to be the second most trending term in technology after artificial intelligence (AI). While a lot of airports around the world already implement paperless boarding, India is yet to take-off on this initiative. <br /><br />DigiYatra has already started installing their automated security system in Varanasi at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport where the airport director, AK Rai, has speculated that the airport will be ready go live with their services by October. <br /><br />In addition, the DigiYatra scheme will also extend to the Visakhapatnam airport and the Kolkata airport as well. <br /><br />That being said, government projects run the risk of not being on time, so there’s a high possibility that BIAL might actually be India’s first paperless boarding airport. The first phase of their roll-out will include Jet Airways, Spice Jet and Air Asia in the first quarter of 2019. If done on time, BIAL could be the first airport to have a end-to-end solution of paperless air travel. <br /><br />

The performances of all the airports are rated on the basis of overall customer satisfaction, according to a news report by an agency.<br />

In the latest survey pertaining to the half year ended December last year, MIA secured 4.72 points out of 5.<br />
<br /> Airport Director <keyword id="3749654" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="j-t-radhakrishna">J T Radhakrishna</keyword> said in a release here that the rating reflects giant strides made by MIA in the segments of passenger handling and customer satisfaction.<br />
<br /> Chandigarh airport has taken the top slot in the survey, followed by <keyword id="45327" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raipur">Raipur</keyword>, with the third position being shared by <keyword id="2562160" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mangaluru">Mangaluru</keyword> and <keyword id="42774" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Udaipur">Udaipur</keyword> airports.<br />

Mumbai, <keyword id="6367820" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="adani-group">Adani Group</keyword>'s flagship holding <keyword id="10722889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="company-adani-airport-holdings-ltd">company Adani Airport Holdings Ltd</keyword> (AAHL) has acquired 23.5 per cent stake in the <keyword id="6592232" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-international-airport-ltd">Mumbai International Airport Ltd</keyword> (MIAL) from ACSA Global Ltd (ACSA) and Bid Services Division (Mauritius) Ltd (Bidvest) for ₹1,685.25 crore.<br /><br />In a <keyword id="525282" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulatory-filing">regulatory filing</keyword>, <keyword id="118623" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Enterprises">Adani Enterprises</keyword> said that AAHL has acquired 28.20 crore equity shares of MIAL. Power revealed its <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2021-north-america-airport-satisfaction-study">2021 North America Airport Satisfaction Study</a> on Wednesday, naming Miami International Airport as the top mega airport in the US, earning 828 out of a possible 1,000 customer satisfaction points. The data analytics company looked at six factors in ranking each airport, including, from most to least important, terminal facilities; airport arrival/departure; baggage claim; security check; check-in/baggage check; and food, beverage, and retail.</p><p>Overall, <keyword id="12188998" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mega-airports" source="Orion">mega airports</keyword>, which J.D. Power defines as having more than 33 million passengers per year, received an average score of 798, up 18 points from 2020. This year saw a record-setting average score of 802 for all US airports, though the highest customer satisfaction occurred in the first half of the study (July 2020 to January 2021) when passenger traffic was still low and dropped in the second half (January 2021 to July 2021) as volume picked up. </p><p>"Airport customer satisfaction reached all-time highs when passenger volumes were severely suppressed by the pandemic, but as leisure <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> rebounded sharply throughout the spring and summer of 2021, we saw an expected downturn in satisfaction. Ultimately, the data conveys changing expectations among travelers. Early in the pandemic, passengers were satisfied with any shop or restaurant being open, but they now expect full service at the airport," explained Michael Taylor, travel intelligence lead at J.D. Hyderabad airport bags award for best airport by 'size and region' for 2020

Software major IBM to digitise Bengaluru international airport operations, says BIAL operator

	The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=chandigarh+airport&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Chandigarh International Airport</a>, which was built at the tune of Rs 1400 crore, has failed to start international flight operations.</p>

	This <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=international+airport&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">international airport</a> was inaugurated with much fanfare and was supposed to handle pressure of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indira+gandhi+international+airport&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi</a>, which is just 250 kilometres from Chandigarh.</p>

	However, it did not attract anyone and now the airport is under scanner of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=punjab+and+haryana+high+court&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Punjab and Haryana High Court</a>.</p>
<p> “Delhi’s <keyword id="89772" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi-International-Airport">Indira Gandhi International airport</keyword> is capable enough to handle the rising growth of air traffic. As of now, the total terminal passenger capacity at the IGI Airport is 62 million passengers per annum against the actual traffic of approx. 41 million passengers handled in the FY 2014-15,” said an official.</p>

	“As per the master plan IGI Airport is expected to handle 109 million passengers in the year 2034. This would be adequate to meet the likely traffic demands over the next 18-20 years,” he said.</p>
<p>
	Now, the Uttar Pradesh government recently sought approval from the Indian government for an international airport in Greater Noida’s Jewar, which is around 84 kilometres away from Delhi.</p>
<p>
	“Huge investment has already been made for expansion of the passenger handling capacity and modernisation at IGI Airport Now, a new airport within 84 km radius is sheer wastage of public money,” said the official.</p>
<p>
	India has spent more than $50 million since 2009 on eight airports that do not receive scheduled flights - white elephants that are a reminder of the pitfalls for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he bets on an infrastructure drive to fuel growth.</p>
<p>
	Even Jaisalmer airport met the same fate as after two-and-a-half years of completion, it has no flight operations.</p>
<p>
	The proposal for an airport in Jewar was first mooted in 2001 by Rajnath Singh, the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. His successor Mayawati also backed the plan and acquired more than 2,000 acres for the proposed airport.<br />

<p>Militants from the Sunni extremist group are now moving freely in Abu Ghraib, only around 40 km (24 miles) from the Iraqi capital, forcing Iraqi forces to remain inside the 10th Division base, the report said.</p>
<p>"We know they have captured substantial numbers of 155 mm howitzers,"  a <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">diplomat in Irbil </span>told McClatchy. <span>"These have a range of about (20 miles) and if they are able to hold territory in Abu Ghraib then the concern they can shell and ultimately close [Baghdad Airport] becomes a grave concern."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Prothero reports that the loss of Abu Ghraib "</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">would severely limit the Iraqi government's ability to send reinforcements to a small number of bases in Anbar that remain in government control."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">And that appears to be the case.</span></p>
<p>"Daash (Islamic State) is openly operating inside Abu Ghraib," an Iraqi soldier told McClatchy. "I was at the 10th Division base there two days ago, and the soldiers cannot leave or patrol. "Daash controls the streets."</p>

<p>Militants from the group formerly known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) held<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWMnEW9bnBU"> rallies</a> in Abu Ghraib city earlier this year, but this is the first report claiming the group is in control of yet another city in the Anbar province.</p>
<p>"The ISIS offensive for Anbar is closely linked to the ISIS campaign for the Baghdad Belts," according to a <a href="http://iswiraq.blogspot.com/2014/10/isis-captures-anbar-city-in-coordinated.html" target="_blank">report</a> from the Institute for the Study of War. "ISIS attacks northwest of Baghdad appear to offset from ISIS attacks southwest of Baghdad."</p>
<p>While ISIS worked to make gains in the Anbar province over the past few weeks, the militant group also increased the number of attacks on the capital in September. Many of the attacks were suicide bombings but at least two attacks used indirect fire, according to reports from <a href="http://www.almadapress.com/ar/news/37169/%D9%85%D9%82%D8%AA%D9%84-%D9%88%D8%A5%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A9-11-%D8%B4%D8%AE%D8%B5%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%B3%D9%82%D9%88%D8%B7-%D9%82%D8%B0%D9%8A%D9%81%D8%AA%D9%8A-%D9%87%D8%A7" target="_blank">local</a> <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Al%20Anbar,%20Iraq/@32.8454406,41.5515721,7z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x1543bfabd4c608df:0xba10b3113b80fcbc" target="_blank">media</a>. If the reports are true, they could indicate that the militants are able to attack Baghdad from afar, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).</p>

<p>Meanwhile, ISIS continued their advance in Anbar. On Saturday the group <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/isis-news-update-islamic-state-seizes-town-iraq-close-haditha-dam-1699457">seized Kubaisa,</a> another town near the province's capital. Fighters reportedly disguised themselves as residents from the nearby town <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/isis-takes-hit-islamic-state-believed-control-most-western-iraqi-town-1698323">Hit</a> which ISIS captured two days ago. Controlling Kubaisa will give militants room to launch attacks near the <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/isis-news-update-islamic-state-seizes-town-iraq-close-haditha-dam-1699457">Haditha Dam</a>, the second-largest generator of hydroelectricity in Iraq's power system.</p>
<p>The Iraqi army is now defending the dam and certain other areas in Anbar that the militants have not seized. However, according to the ISW, if militants manage to consolidate land in Anbar, they will be ready to move on to Baghdad.</p>
<p>"If ISIS can consolidate its core strength in Anbar, then its reinforcements that are currently augmenting attacks in this zone will likely shift to reinforce the northern and southern Baghdad Belts," the report said. "And prepare to attack the capital." </p>
