Singapore Airlines will make an additional investment of Rs 3,194.5 crore in Tata Group-owned Air India post-merger of Vistara in November. The merger, announced on November 29, 2022, and set to be completed on November 11, 2024, will result in Singapore Airlines having a 25.1% stake in the enlarged Air India. Full-service carrier Vistara, which started flying on January 9, 2015, is a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, where the latter holds a 49% shareholding. Vistara's last flight will take off tomorrow i.e. November 11, 2024. Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group on Friday said its consideration for the merger comprises the 49% interest in Vistara and Rs 20,585 million (Rs 2,058.5 crore) in cash in exchange for a 25.1% equity interest in the enlarged Air India. Post-merger, SIA expects to recognize a non-cash accounting gain of around 1.1 billion Singapore dollars and also start equity accounting for its share of Air India's financial results. According to a release on Friday, the merger includes an agreement for SIA to contribute its share of any funding previously provided by Tata prior to the completion of the merger, together with relevant funding costs up to Rs 5,020 crore that would allow it to maintain a 25.1% stake in Air India. "SIA's additional capital injection is expected to be Rs 31,945 million (equivalent to SGD 498 million), based on Tata's funding to Air India to date. This will occur after the completion of the merger and within November 2024 through subscription to new Air India shares. "Future capital injections will be considered based on Air India's requirements and available funding options," according to the release issued while announcing the airline's financial performance for the six months ended September 2024. The merger of Vistara with Air India will mark a major consolidation in the fast-growing Indian aviation space. SIA said the merged entity will have a significant presence across all key Indian air travel segments, including domestic, international, full-service, and low-cost operations. "This will strengthen SIA's multi-hub strategy, allowing it to continue participating directly in India's large and fast-growing aviation market," it added. Recently, Air India and SIA agreed to significantly expand their codeshare agreement, adding 11 Indian cities and another 40 international destinations to their network.

The robot not only aced wind tunnel tests but also soared autonomously in the open air, its feathers responding seamlessly to every gust and tilt. <h2>From feathered flights to fighter jets</h2>What does this mean for aviation? First off, PigeonBot II opens the door to fuel-efficient airplanes. By ditching the vertical fin and adopting bird-inspired stabilisation, planes could save energy and reduce emissions — great news for eco-conscious travelers. But there’s another exciting twist: stealthier fighter jets. A plane without a vertical tailfin has a smaller radar signature, making it harder to detect. The biggest controversy came in August when the Wall Street Journal reported on the blatant biases of <keyword id="736869" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook-India">Facebook India</keyword>'s team, headed by their <keyword id="5729070" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-policy-chief">public policy chief</keyword> for the country, Ankhi Das. The report alleged that the top leadership at Facebook's India office refused to apply the company's own rules to politicians from the ruling party, despite clear violations of Facebook's policies against incitement to violence, hate speech and misinformation. Following the report, the Congress raised the issue of what it calls "unholy nexus" of the ruling BJP with Facebook and WhatsApp. Shashi Tharoor, the head of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT), called on Facebook to respond to allegations of ignoring hate speech in favour of the ruling party. Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also wrote a hard-hitting letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, blaming the Facebook India management of alleged bias against people supporting the right-of-centre ideology. The minister said that as a <keyword id="10498524" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="transnational-digital-platform">transnational digital platform</keyword>, Facebook must not only be fair and neutral, but also "visibly seen to be so, to users of diverse beliefs and ideologies". Later, deposing before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on personal data protection Bill 2019, Das was asked how much funds are spent by the social media giant on data safety. The Facebook executives were also questioned on the quantum of its revenue as well as the profit they are making in India. A coalition of 41 civil rights groups also demanded that Facebook India should immediately place its public policy head Ankhi Das on a leave of absence pending a full audit of the company and an investigation into her statements as reported in The Wall Street Journal. The political heat resulted in Das quitting the company in October "to pursue her interest in public service". Another WSJ report this month alleged that Facebook discussed banning Bajrang Dal and termed it a dangerous organisation but did not act considering the safety of the employees. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and said: "Further confirmation that BJP-RSS control Facebook in India." However, no stern action was taken on Facebook. Micro-blogging platform Twitter stirred a major controversy in the second half of the year when it showed Ladakh as part of China. Twitter had to apologise to a parliamentary panel in a letter, stating that it will fix the issue of geo-tagging Ladakh as part of China and Ladakh will be added as a region administered by India as a union territory. The micro-blogging platform sent the letter to the panel's chairperson Meenakshi Lekhi and apologised for the geo-tag error. A joint committee of Parliament led by BJP MP Lekhi which has 20 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha, had issued summons to Twitter, seeking an explanation in form of an affidavit. Taking strong exception to the "misrepresentation" of India's map, the government also wrote a letter to the Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, saying that any attempt by the platform to disrespect the sovereignty and integrity of India, which is also reflected by the maps, was totally unacceptable. In a separate incident, after courting controversy for wrongly showing Jammu and Kashmir as part of China, Twitter said it resolved this particular geo-tag issue. Several netizens also asked the IT minister and the government to take action against <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword> as the controversy erupted amid India's border standoff with China in Ladakh. The company said it's looking to size up to regional airliners soon.Other plane makers, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-a380-demonstrator-jet-that-will-test-hydrogen-powered-engines-2022-2">Airbus and Embraer, are also building hydrogen-powered aircraft</a> as part of their decarbonization efforts.<h2>Hydrogen powertrains are not strong enough yet to power large airliners</h2><div type="image" title="H2FLY's H2Y hydrogen plane flying." height="683" width="1024" msid="106192278" hostid="261" sizebytes="46660"></div>For now, the small prop planes are likely to remain the popular option for hydrogen-powered engines because the current technology is not strong enough to power the medium and large airliners that make up most of the world's passenger jets, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation.This is likely not an issue for Japan Airlines, though, as its new partnerships are directed at deploying hydrogen aircraft on short, regional routes around Japan."JAL group already operates 50 regional aircraft which will be relevant to hydrogen-electric propulsion technology in the foreseeable future," James Peck, ZeroAvia's chief customer officer, said in a press release.The airline's regional connector, Japan Air Commuter, already operates a small fleet of ATR 72 planes, so its investment in Universal Hydrogen could prove lucrative thanks to its conversion kits for the turboprop.There's a downside to using hydrogen on these tinier planes, though.Because hydrogen is light and requires a lot of storage space because of the immense volume needed compared with kerosene, these smaller aircraft sacrifice range and payload capacity — meaning they could become a cost burden for operators.But the range issue could be remedied with the use of liquid hydrogen over gaseous hydrogen, as shown by H2Fly's recent flight. According to the company, its September H2Y flight soared 932 miles using liquid hydrogen but only 466 miles using gaseous hydrogen."In the years to come, battery-electric and hydrogen-electric propulsion systems will enable us to build aircraft that are quieter and make mid- to long-range air travel possible with zero emissions," Universal Hydrogen said.<h2>The debate between 'green' and 'blue' hydrogen</h2><div type="image" title="Hydrogen renewable energy production pipeline - hydrogen gas for clean electricity solar and windturbine facility." height="3359" width="5015" msid="106192279" hostid="261" sizebytes="738898"></div>In addition to range and capacity problems, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-hydrogen-fuel-industry-explainer-2020-1">hydrogen engines</a> have faced pushback from environmental advocates who worry that hydrogen production will further the fossil-fuel crisis.In October, the Biden administration announced $7 billion in funding to create "clean" hydrogen hubs, two-thirds of which were planned to be dedicated to producing green hydrogen via electrolysis — the process of splitting water into hydrogen and water.This, however, leaves room for what's known as "blue" hydrogen, created from a combination of natural gas and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-first-commercial-carbon-capture-facility-opens-2023-11">carbon capture and storage</a>.The process is considered carbon-neutral, but environmentalists say the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-hydrogen-fuel-industry-explainer-2020-1">burning of natural gas</a> inherently means excess methane emissions — which is a much more potent greenhouse gas compared with CO2, though it doesn't sit in the atmosphere as long.According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://blogs.worldbank.org/energy/unleashing-power-hydrogen-clean-energy-transition">World Bank</a>, more than 98% of the world's hydrogen is made via natural gas or coal — meaning just a small portion is truly zero-emissions green hydrogen. "Gray" hydrogen — the same as blue minus the carbon capture — is the most abundant."It takes a lot of energy to capture the carbon dioxide, and that comes from burning even more natural gas," Robert Howarth, a professor of ecology and environmental biology at Cornell University, told Business Insider's Catherine Boudreau in October. "So it's not a surprise to me that the oil and gas industry likes the idea of blue hydrogen."However, Brian Korgel, the director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas at Austin, told BI that the companies vying for hydrogen-hub funding had to meet strict criteria."There's some safeguards," Korgel said. "These projects have to meet emissions standards, and it's not in companies' benefit to do the smoke-and-mirrors thing because they won't get the grant money, which ratchets up over time."

Japan Airlines is looking at hydrogen-electric-powered aircraft as a solution to the aviation industry's carbon problem

InterGlobe Aviation, parent of the country's largest airline <keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">IndiGo</keyword>, on Tuesday reported a net loss of Rs 3,174 crore for the three months to June, primarily due to a sharp <keyword id="6354942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="decline">decline</keyword> in revenues amid the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.The airline, which had a fleet of 277 planes at the end of June 2021, incurred a net loss of Rs 2,844 crore in the year-ago period. The carrier's consolidated total income increased by 177.2 per cent to Rs 3,170 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal, it said in a statement. The total income stood at Rs 1,143 crore in the first quarter of the previous financial year. The airline's total expenses increased by 59.2 per cent to Rs 6,344 crore in Q1 of 2021-22, compared to Rs 3,986 crore earlier. The company's CEO <keyword id="7255265" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronojoy-Dutta">Ronojoy Dutta</keyword> said, "Our financial results for the first quarter were severely impacted by the second Covid wave. The number of passengers traveling declined sharply in the months of May and June." With the second wave receding, IndiGo is seeing a measured recovery in bookings for July and August, he added. "Notwithstanding the industry's present challenges, we remain firmly optimistic about IndiGo's future. Our entire focus during this pandemic has been to manage our cash balances, run a high- quality airline and to continue to build our capabilities and be prepared for the post Covid environment," he stated. The carrier had reported a net loss of Rs 1,147 crore in the last quarter of 2020-21. The airline operated a peak of 1,262 daily flights and a minimum of 318 flights during the first quarter of FY22, including non-scheduled flights, the statement said. The aircraft, to be powered by CFM Leap <keyword id="240487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="engines">engines</keyword>, are scheduled to be delivered in the second half of 2021, a release said. "We are delighted to partner once again with IndiGo as we continue to support our airline customers to finance their aircraft. "This incremental capital expenditure also reflects our disciplined investment strategy throughout the cycle, focused on building a portfolio of latest technology aircraft deliveries," <keyword id="145397" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BOC-Aviation">BOC Aviation</keyword> Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Robert Martin said. According to the Q3 FY21 earnings presentation, IndiGo had 287 aircraft in its fleet at the end of December 31, 2020. Of these, 272 were on operating lease, while the remaining 15 were owned/finance lease. "We are pleased to further strengthen our existing relationship with BOC Aviation. The addition of these eight A320 neo aircraft demonstrates our confidence in the future growth of the aviation market in India," said Riyaz Peermohamed, Chief Aircraft Acquisition and Financing Officer, IndiGo. With a fleet of 284 aircraft at present, the airline is operating over 1,100 daily flights, connecting to 60 domestic and six international destinations. "I was just like, 'Oh, my goodness, this man is the holy grail. And guess what? This third grade girl, I'm going to be him. I'm gonna be the first Black female Supreme Court justice,'" Grimes told Insider. "So, I thought I was Ketanji Brown before there was a Ketanji Brown."She followed in Marshall's footsteps, attending Howard University in Washington, DC, in 2006 to study political science. But during a college internship with Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis, she realized she didn't want to go to law school. A call with a recruiting agency in 2012 led her to an interview with the National <keyword id="14052810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-aviation" source="Orion">Business Aviation</keyword> Association, at a time when she wasn't sure what "business aviation" meant (the term generally means the use of an <keyword id="11894926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airplane" source="Orion">airplane</keyword> for business purposes, such as moving equipment or getting to a meeting)."The night before, I'm looking up 'What the heck is business aviation?' because when I think aviation at that time, all I knew was getting on a commercial flight to go on vacation with family," Grimes said. Despite her lack of aviation expertise, Grimes landed a job as a registration assistant for <keyword id="14340509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nbaa" source="Orion">NBAA</keyword>, the leading trade group representing roughly 11,000 companies that rely on aviation to make their businesses run. After climbing the ranks, she was named senior manager of government affairs for NBAA in March 2021. "I'm one of those people that truly stumbled into aviation, and have caught the bug and loved it and plan to stay as long as I can," Grimes told Insider. <h2>Fostering the future of business aviation </h2>The NBAA was founded in 1947 with the mission to foster growth of business aviation. As senior manager of government affairs, Grimes handles policy work, looking to help pass legislation to enhance the business aviation industry. In 2014, just two years into her tenure at NBAA, Grimes helped found its Young Professionals in Business Aviation, or YoPro, program, which helps to recruit and retain the next generation of professionals coming into business aviation. The program started off with networking and providing young people with professional development opportunities, and now includes an advocacy leg meant to foster the importance of advocating for NBAA's mission on the Hill. "I've been able to be seen as a thought leader for the next generation and for workforce development, and for diversity, equity, and inclusion, not only in the sense of being a young, Black female working in an industry that's male dominated, but also just coming from different backgrounds and not having the traditional aviation background," Grimes said. <h2>Ushering in change for aviation </h2>Grimes' favorite part of the job is getting involved with innovation taking place in aviation, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-startups-evtol-flying-car-industry-urban-air-mobility-2022-4">advanced air mobility</a>, she told Insider. NBAA is helping to get legislation passed and working with regulators to make sure everything is in place for the nascent industry.Though she's certainly faced obstacles in her career, she said she doesn't tend to look at them that way. "I'm really big on perspective. And so an obstacle to me doesn't really mean defeat or failure," she said. "I don't really see a lot of things as an obstacle." <h2>Aviation is 'begging and pleading' for diversity </h2>Looking to the future, Grimes said she plans to focus on honing her skills as a government affairs professional. "I think that switching over to the government affairs side has opened up a new pathway with so much room for growth," she said. For young people looking to carve out their own path in aviation, Grimes said now is the time."Whenever I'm talking to young people nowadays, specifically people of a diverse background, I tell them that this is the time to get into this industry. I would say that right now, this industry is literally begging and pleading for diversity," Grimes said. Her biggest piece of advice for landing a job in aviation: persistence. "You don't have to have the background, per se, in it. But, just go after it," Grimes said. "Be persistent. Have a goal and go after it."

New Delhi, Jan 30 () Shares of InterGlobe Aviation fell nearly 4 per cent on Thursday after the company's shareholders rejected a special resolution of co-promoter Rakesh Gangwal to amend the company's Articles of Association (AoA).
 The scrip declined 3.18 per cent to close at Rs 1,415.70 on the BSE. During the trade, it dropped 3.90 per cent to Rs 1,405.10.
 At the NSE, it fell 3.66 per cent to close at Rs 1,408.50.
 Gangwal had sought removal of articles pertaining to transfer and acquisition of the company's shares, including 'Right of First Refusal' and 'Tag Along Right'.
 "The Special Resolution has not been passed as the votes cast in favour (48.55 per cent) of the resolution are less than three times the number of votes cast against (51.44 per cent) the resolution," InterGlobe Aviation, which runs IndiGo, said in a BSE filing after the extraordinary general meeting held here on Wednesday.
 Rahul Bhatia and affiliates -- InterGlobe Enterprises (IGE) Group -- have around 38 per cent stake in the company, while Gangwal and his related entities own around 36.64 per cent stake.
 As per the AoA, if any member of Bhatia-led IGE Group wants to transfer shares to a third party, then the non-transferring group will have the 'Right of First Refusal' subject to certain conditions.
 Similarly, the non-transferring group will also have the 'Tag Along Right' wherein it would have the option to sell some part of the shareholding.
 The differences between co-founders and co-promoters -- Gangwal and Bhatia -- came to the fore in July 2019 after Gangwal sought market regulator Sebi's intervention to address alleged corporate governance lapses at the company. SUM
