<ul><li>Banking technology startup <keyword id="702953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zeta">Zeta</keyword> is the latest to join the Indian <keyword id="152045" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unicorn">unicorn</keyword> club.</li><li>The company has been valued at $1.45 billion after raising $250 million in its Series C round of funding.</li><li>Zeta plans to use the fresh infusion of capital to expand its presence in the US and European markets where banks are moving away from branches to offering their services online.</li></ul>Zeta, a banking technology startup based in Bengaluru, is the newest Indian startup to attain the ‘unicorn’ status. In its Series C round of funding the company raised $250 million from Softbank Vision Fund II at a valuation of $1.45 billion. A ‘unicorn’ is a private company that is valued at $1 billion or more. The deal more than quadruples Zeta’s valuation since 2019, when Sodexo SA valued the startup at $300 million. With new money in its pocket and a brand new unicorn tag, Zeta plans to use the new funding to expand in the US and European markets. “They [banks] have been slow to innovate and provide poor user experiences,” said Bhavin Turakhia, co-founder of Zeta. According to him, Zeta is poised to capture the markets where banks are moving online and away from the conventional branches. In fact, most of the startups he’s been involved in, in the past, have been without institutional funding. Zeta’s move to raise capital marks a departure from his preference for bootstrapping his businesses. Zeta founder, 41-year old Turakhia, launched the startup in 2015 after already having dipped his toe — more like submerged his toe — in multiple startups with his brother, Divyank. He was already coding at the age of 10 and had attained millionaire status by the time he hit 20. By the time he was 26, he shared a billion-dollar fortune with his brother. This banking tech startup is the newest Indian unicorn with a $1.45 billion valuation

Now such companies are looking forward to better things in the upcoming <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Union+Budget+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Union Budget</a> to ensure customers stick to <keyword id="6358577" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digital-Payments">digital payments</keyword> instruments and don’t migrate back to cash. 
 
The whole sector is hopeful that center, in a bid to drive cashless economy, will follow the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=South+Korea&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">South Korea</a> model where their government succeeded to switch a major chunk of payments in the country to digital means through <keyword id="6358231" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-benefits">tax benefits</keyword> for both merchants and consumers. 
 
“The government of South Korea did the maths around the fact that the number of people coming into the tax nets incrementally because of digital payments and the cost of cash to the GDP reducing would offset the temporary hit that they had in terms of tax payments. I think this would be not only sustainable but also of great attraction for Indians who are careful about saving taxes under investments, home loans, etc,” TR Ramachandran, group country manager, India and South Asia for Visa, told ET. 
 
The whole payment industry has been meeting Finance Minister Arun jaitley and it is said that they have presented various case studies of different countries to showcase a direct relation between tax benefits and uptick of digital transactions. 
 
“Tax benefits from both sides — merchants as well as consumers — will get more people to transact digitally. Merchants can get discount on service tax, sales tax, etc. while consumers can get benefits on income tax,” Paresh Rajde, founder of Mumbai-based domestic remittance and payments company Suvidhaa Infoserve, told ET. 
 
Reportedly, Mastercard has said that the government should focus on small merchants and promote digital payments among them to address issues around credit underwriting and onboarding for this sector. 
 
“One of the biggest resistance factors for consumers to adopt electronic payments is their fears around safety and security. It is critical that the government take the safety and security agenda very seriously and invest in technology and fraud protection tools,” Porush Singh, country corporate officer and division president South Asia for Mastercard, told ET. 
 
According to people with knowledge in the field, major reason why merchants and small shopkeepers prefer to transact in cash is because they want to avoid tax net. Hence if they are given tax benefits on accepting payments digitally there would be more number of people taking it up. 
 
The industry has also requested for extension of the import duty waiver on PoS terminals for card payments beyond March 31as it expects the demand for such terminals to go up. While industry executives seek more support from the government to promote digital payments, there is also talk around some mention of cyber security as there are security concerns around digital payments. 
 
“Everything that the government has announced, from UPI payments to Aadhaar authentication, there are huge security concerns around its implementation,” said Bhavin Turakhia, chief executive at payments technology company Zeta. “The government needs to recognise such concerns for both cards as well as UPI,” he said.

A study published Wednesday says yes.</li><li>There are caveats.</li><li>The study did not use the most recent Apple Watch, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-apple-watch-detect-afib-irregular-heart-rate-stanford-study-2019-3">has a special sensor designed to detect heart issues</a>. Instead, it used previous versions of the Watch, which use lights.</li><li>In addition, few people recruited for the research actually completed it. </li></ul>Apple CEO Tim Cook started 2019 with a bang."If you zoom out into the future, and you look back and you ask the question, 'What was Apple's greatest contribution to mankind,' it will be about health," he <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/08/apple-ceo-tim-cook-interview-cnbc-jim-cramer-transcript.html">told CNBC in a January interview</a>.A study published on Wednesday in <a href="https://www.nejm.org/">The New England Journal of Medicine</a> provides a look at how that vision might take shape. Called the Apple Heart Study, the research was designed to see whether the Apple Watch and its heart-rate sensor could properly spot irregularities in people's heartbeat. One key abnormality is a condition called atrial fibrillation, or afib.Overall, the research suggests that the Apple Watch <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-apple-watch-detect-afib-irregular-heart-rate-stanford-study-2019-3">does a fairly good job of detecting afib</a>. Notably, the study did not use the most recent Apple Watch, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-apple-watch-detect-afib-irregular-heart-rate-stanford-study-2019-3">has a special sensor designed to detect heart issues</a>. Instead, it used previous versions of the Watch, which use lights.In some cases, the devices also spot problems when there aren't any, something that could send healthy people flocking to healthcare providers for care they don't need. In other cases, Apple Watches failed to spot problems. That could lead some people with afib to falsely believe they don't have the condition.People with afib often deal with shortness of breath and poor blood flow. The condition can also increase the risk of more serious problems like stroke and heart failure.Importantly, very few of the study participants who were flagged as potentially having afib actually ended up completing the study. A lot of them simply dropped out."I think the most surprising or interesting finding is the drop-out rate," <a href="http://vivo.med.cornell.edu/display/cwid-mes2015">Mohamed Elshazly</a>, an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College who reviewed the study's design and saw its preliminary results, told Business Insider. "This should make us rethink how to do these kinds of studies in the future," Elshazly added.<h2>An example for tech giants with their eyes on health?</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson</div></div></div>Apple isn't the only Silicon Valley tech giant with its eye on health. In recent years, companies such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-suicide-work-reveals-gap-silicon-valley-tech-health-research-2019-5">Facebook</a>, Google parent company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/verily-raises-billion-google-alphabet-ruth-porat-2019-1">Alphabet</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fitbit-health-diagnosing-heart-medical-conditions-2018-5">Fitbit</a> (which Google recently agreed to acquire) have all made an effort to detect and prevent illness - whether it's picking up on someone who might be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-suicide-work-reveals-gap-silicon-valley-tech-health-research-2019-5">at risk of suicide</a> or diagnosing a condition like afib or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fitbit-health-diagnosing-heart-medical-conditions-2018-5">sleep apnea</a>.Ailments like afib may be a kind of holy grail for these companies because they are equal parts common, serious, and preventable."The study's findings will help patients and clinicians understand how devices like Apple Watch can play a role in identifying atrial fibrillation," <a href="https://profiles.stanford.edu/minang-turakhia">Mintu Turakhia</a>, the study's lead author and an associate professor of cardiovascular medicine at Stanford, said in a November statement.Apple did some things really well with this study, Elshazly said.As examples, he cited the fact that the research was done in collaboration with Stanford; included lots of people; and took place over a fairly long time period. Additionally, the study design was kept separate from Apple, who funded it.Another strength is that the Apple Watch appears to be highly selective: it only flagged a very small slice of the overall population as having potential heart issues, Elshazly said. Out of more than 400,000 people recruited for the study, only 0.5% - or about 2,000 people - were notified that they might have an irregular heart rate. The Watch appears to be good at spotting problems where there really are problems, Elshazly said. Out of the people who got Apple Watch alerts, 84% had afib and were having an episode at the time of the notification. But there were weaknesses too, said Elshazly.<h2>The study raises new questions about digital health efforts</h2>Roughly 79% of people who got an initial notice that they might have afib didn't complete the study or were later excluded from it. Most of them dropped out, or failed to do one of the remote visits that the study required."That's a huge number," Elshazly said. "Most clinical trials wouldn't continue with a drop-out figure that high."Also, some people who actually have afib were missed by the Watch. According to the paper, at least 3,000 people who were later diagnosed with afib did not receive a notification from Apple. Elshazly thinks this could be a bigger problem than the study lets on."There will be a large percentage of people wearing the Apple Watch thinking they are accurately monitored and safe from afib," when in reality they have the condition, Elshazly said. <a href="http://www.cardiobrief.org/about-2/">Larry Husten</a>, the former editor of TheHeart.Org, previously agreed with Elshazly on this.In an <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2019/03/15/apple-watch-atrial-fibrillation/">opinion piece for Stat News from this March</a>, he wrote, "Harm occurs from these in several ways.
