Not only are they being trained emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and data science; they are also being equipped with ‘skills’ that will help sail through the era of disruption. According to the dean of the institution, the answer lies in innovative thinking. “The problems are not limited to one particular domain or expertise. However, the basic skills remain the same. But what differentiates an engineer from other professionals is the right attitude and innovative thought process — the ability to think afresh,” Manish Shrikhande, Dean, Sponsored Research &amp; Industrial Consultancy (SRIC) at IIT Roorkee told Business Insider. What gives engineers an edge is ‘the incremental improvement’ they can add while solving a problem. “When we are looking at an engineer graduating from college, we are looking at a productive life of over 30 years. That will only happen when they know how to think,” he said. According to him, domain-specific skills acquired by engineering graduates are short spanned — and may turn obsolete within a span of three years. But the skill that is most in demand is blockchain, especially amongst fintech companies. “The technology will act as a security device, an insurance against hacking and digital frauds,” he said on the sidelines of the <keyword id="8451787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="inter-iit-tech-meet">Inter IIT Tech Meet</keyword> 2019, the annual technical competition. The three-day long event was aimed to move away from bookish learning and find “feasible solutions to real-life industry problems”. The dean of IIT Roorkee says what you learn in graduation will be obsolete in 3 years

As against the two-year M.Tech program at IITs, the premier institutes are planning to execute M.Tech course for working professionals. 
 
A number of IITs are unable to retain their MTech students as they quit the course after landing jobs in public sector undertakings. In this regard, the M Tech programme could have more students complete their Masters. 
 
The move can help promote research work and increase revenue of IITs. IIT directors were seen discussing issues related to introducing executive MTech at the 155th meeting of IIT directors hosted by IIT-Kanpur last year in December. 
 
They feel there is no harm having sponsored MTechs by industry and the course could be charged for the actual cost. 
 
Curently, a number of IIMs and other B-schools already offer executive MBA programme for working professionals, but IIT's M.Tech course is the most cost-effective. Here's what the current M.Tech courses are offering. 
 
Compressed into a one-year programme, the executive M.Tech programme at IITs will be charged as per market rates. 
 
The final decision, however, is awaited. 
 
IIT directors of Bombay, Hyderabad and Roorkee are working out the details of this project. Once they reach a conclusion, the proposal will be sent to the IIT council, chaired by the HRD minister, for final approval.

A New Executive Course for Working Professionals may soon find a place in IITs

HRD minister <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> has asked <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> to teach Sanskrit language so that study of science and technology can be facilitated as reflected in its literature. 
 
A panel was set up, chaired by former CEC N Gopalaswami, which has submitted its report in the Lok Sabha, saying that IITs may facilitate study of science and technology as reflected in Sanskrit literature along with inter-disciplinary study of Sanskrit and modern subjects, as per HRD Minister Smriti Irani. 
 
 
"Accordingly, IITs have been requested to teach Sanskrit language especially with reference to study of works which contain scientific knowledge," Irani said.

In its bid to build a solar India, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> announced recently that it will be developing an efficient, cheap and clean way of power supply to villages using microgrids. For this, the institute has signed a MoU with power and automation technology company ABB India under government’s <keyword id="3873307" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="uchchatar-avishkar-yojana">Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana</keyword> scheme. 
 
They will be looking at developing a power management system to optimize the operation of multiple micro grids, with or without grid connection, to transmit electricity reliably to small villages. This system will also enable the integration of individual solar PV rooftops to the micro grid of a village. Such grid clusters are expected to have the capability of generating and using renewable energy locally from one kilowatt to a few hundred kilowatts. This inter-connection of micro grids with the existing distribution system will also help reduce outages and cut electricity costs. 
 
As of now, the government is looking at a generation capacity of 40 GW in the next five years through grid-connected solar photovoltaic rooftops and small scale solar PV plants. 
 
The project scope includes micro grids of 20 to 100 kW capacity equipped with battery storage. Detailed studies and simulation of the various system components along with related control and optimization logic, protection criteria, monitoring and communication will also be undertaken. 
 
"While India has set an ambitious target for solar energy generation, IIT Madras has been at the forefront in developing decentralised energy-efficient solar PV micro grid solutions tailored to meet India's urban, rural and off-grid power requirements," said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras. 
 Meanwhile, ABB India's managing director <keyword id="222145" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjeev-Sharma">Sanjeev Sharma</keyword> said - "In a country as huge and diverse as India, it is important to design models of integration with power management and load balancing for proven micro grids technology with the existing grid infrastructure." 
 
Interestingly, ABB’s Access to Electricity social initiative in India has already demonstrated significant impact in the country. 
 The company has brought <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> to 1,200 households in the Rajasthan desert and to over 100 households in the world’s largest delta region of the Sunderbans. This project follows two ongoing CSR projects with IIT-M; one for the design, installation and commissioning of a micro grid able to supply 50 kW power to a rural village, the other one to help establish and research the Center of Battery Engineering at IIT-M. 
 
ABB recently announced the setting up of India’s first solar-powered micro grid to provide uninterrupted power supply to its factories in Vadodara. 
 
With the slow but steady work by the institute, industry and the government, it seems India is not too far away from achieving its solar dream.

"We are not limiting ourselves to any fixed number for campus hiring. We are rearing to go and will be aggressive at the tech, B-school and logistics campuses. We will attract talent by selling them the opportunity to work with an ecommerce leader that will impact a larger audience," Dalbir Singh, senior director human resources at Flipkart, told ET. 
 
Snapdeal will rely heavily on the campuses for fresh talent to widen its base of tech team. 
 
Meanwhile, Rajiv Srivatsa, chief operating officer and co-founder of Urban Ladder, said the startup plans to visit campuses earlier this year than it did last time round. "Technology is where the rubber meets the road and ideas become reality. As technology is so integral to us, this year we will try to be ahead of others in tapping the top campus talent," Dhruv Dubey, vice president - HR at <keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword>, told the financial daily. 
 
Meanwhile, interest level among students to join startups is also growing due to roles and atmosphere offered by the startups. 
 
"I will go to the top IITs and talk about the company and the culture that boosts fun and flexibility," online grocer PepperTap's CEO Navneet Singh told ET. 
 
Also, hiring students at an early stage is also becoming the norm at e-Commerce companies.

The industry estimates that India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally. IIT students are choosing AI over computer science as job prospects change

KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Where is the country’s top engineering talent heading to in a year of subdued hiring? <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> (RIL), <keyword id="43340" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Oracle">Oracle</keyword> and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> topped the hiring charts for the class of 2014, according to data from the top <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> at the end of the first phase of this placement season. 
 With 271 offers, almost a 100 more than the second-largest <keyword id="41007" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="recruiter">recruiter</keyword>, Samsung is the clear winner so far. This number includes 69 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 28 postings in <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>. 
 
The South Korean conglomerate has ramped up hiring numbers by as much as 71% from 158 last year, emerging as the biggest recruiter at the IITs so far. It had made 23 international offers last year. 
 
“We focused on campus hiring for multiple reasons — strengthening our core competency in embedded computing and building new skills/capabilities in UX design, enterprise software and data analysis,” said a Samsung spokesperson in a written response to ET. Out of 243 candidates selected for India, 211 are <keyword id="821920" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="from-software">from software</keyword> engineering and 19 from UX design. 
 RIL, another regular recruiter, made 177 offers, lower than last year’s 202. Students have been taken on in the roles of graduate <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> trainees (GETs). 
 
“Other than some 45 PPOs, RIL has hired 132 students from 8 IITs – Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, Kanpur and IITBHU. In addition to this, Reliance Jio hired 5 GETs, one from IIT-Hyderabad and 4 from IIT-Indore,” said a Reliance Industries spokesperson in a written response. 
 
These numbers reflect hiring at the end of the first phase of the placement season in which roughly 50-60% of the batches have been placed across IITs. The second phase will start in the first week of January and will cover the remaining students. 
 
Tech major Oracle was another big recruiter, taking on close to 135 students across almost all IITs. While its overall campus hiring numbers remained fairly consistent over the last three years, it made a few US-based offers for the first time this year. 
 
“Oracle has a number of different business groups internally and we hire students across a variety of positions. 
 Many students will join Oracle, working in product development roles across our hardware, software or industry-specific based groups,” said a <keyword id="154054" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="company-spokesperson">company spokesperson</keyword>. 
 E-commerce major Flipkart, as reported earlier by ET, has been a big draw at the IITs during the first phase of placements. The company increased hiring from around 100 last year to 118. “Campus hiring is strategic for us. It helps us identify and bring new talent,” <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword>, co-founder, Flipkart, told ET. 
 
“Past experience has shown us that talent from tier-I colleges like the IITs and IIMs and the way they meet the challenges posed by a high-growth environment like ours has been remarkable -- and a great fit for an organisation like Flipkart that stresses on ownership and innovation,” added Bansal. 
 
Several other companies emerged as strong recruiters, according to hiring data from six of the older IITs at Bombay, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur and Guwahati. 
 Business process outsourcing company <keyword id="369930" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="EXL-Service">EXL Service</keyword>, for instance, made 97 offers across 7 IITs this year compared to just 46 across 5 IITs last placements. The increase in the number of campus hires in the roles of consultants and analysts is to power the company’s analytics business, which has been growing at more than 30% for the last few years.

Samsung, RIL, Oracle and Flipkart top employers of IIT graduates this year

By Gunjan Sharma New Delhi, Jun 14 () Low-cost portable ventilators, affordable COVID-19 test kits, drones for sanitisation, specialised digital stethoscopes, disposable bamboo furniture for makeshift isolation wards and "infection-proof fabric" for hospitals -- these are among several innovations, by IITs across the country during the lockdown period, which are ready to the hit the market to aid the fight against COVID-19. The innovations have taken commercial route either through IIT-incubated startups or the premiere institutes have given license to companies keeping the patent rights with themselves. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, which became the first academic institute to get a nod from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) for its COVID-19 test kit, has given non-exclusive open licence to Bengaluru-based biotechnology firm Genie Laboratories for commercialising the test, but with a price rider of Rs 500 per kit. The kits are being manufactured at a facility at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Vishakhapatnam, and are expected to be available in the market in the next 10 days. "Over 40 companies, including a few big names, have reached out to us to commercialise the test. We will be giving open licences to companies which meet the quality criterion set by us. We are also giving the licence with a price rider so that companies do not hike the price once commercialised. We have shortlisted Genie laboratories as the first one, but there will be more companies too," IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal told . According to the IIT Delhi team, the current testing methods available are "probe-based" while the one developed by the IIT team is a "probe-free" method, which reduces the testing cost without compromising on accuracy. Another innovation by the institute, an "infection-proof fabric" to be used at hospitals to prevent hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is being sent to various hospitals in Delhi and NCR in the form of bed sheets, curtains and uniforms by an incubated startup called "Fabiosys Innovations". The innovation was earlier tested at AIIMS. "We take rolls of cotton fabric and treat it with a set of proprietary-developed chemicals under a set of particular reaction conditions, using the machinery already commonly available in textile industries. The fabric, after undergoing these processes, gains the powerful antimicrobial functionality," Samrat Mukhopadhyay, a professor at the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering in IIT-Delhi, said. "Even after washing multiple times, it does not lose its functionality. This fabric can be stitched into various articles such as bedsheets, the uniforms for patients, doctors and nurses and even curtains. The fabric satisfies the Indian standards in terms of the number of washing. It is completely non-toxic and affordable," he added. A "digital stethoscope" developed by a team at IIT Bombay, that can listen to heartbeats from a distance and record them, minimising the risk of healthcare professionals contracting the novel coronavirus from patients, is already available in the market. Operating a start-up called "AyuDevice" from the IIT's technology business incubator, the team has sent 1,000 stethoscopes to different hospitals and healthcare centres across the country. The product is also available for sale at various stores. An IIT Guwahati startup "Marut Dronetech" has developed two types of drones, which are being used by the Telangana government and various departments across the state. The drones are being deployed for spraying disinfectant in public spaces to prevent the coronavirus. They can disinfect 50 times more area than what can be done using traditional methods, the institute claimed. "We have also developed public monitoring and warning drones which are fitted with a camera and speaker. These can be used to monitor places, especially with high disease prevalence for crowd gathering and give appropriate instructions to people, using fitted loudspeakers," said Prem Kumar Vislawath, an IIT Guwahati alumnus. The institute's design department has come up with a bamboo hospital furniture range, mass production of which is quick and low cost, to meet demands arising out of hospitalisation of more people with the spike in coronavirus cases. "The furniture can be used at primary health centres and makeshift isolation wards set up in places like indoor stadiums. It can be easily disposed of when the virus has been contained. Over 200 beds can be manufactured per day using the design. We have tied up with two local entrepreneurs for manufacturing," a professor said. IIT Kanpur has collaborated with ICICI Securities for the development of a low-cost ventilator innovated by two of its students. "This easily portable ventilator will be much cheaper than other life-saving machines available in the market. It will also work as a sanitizer to keep the hospital germ-free. Due to the components used in the ventilator which are specifically manufactured in India, it will cost only Rs 70,000 while available ventilators cost around Rs 4 lakh," said IIT-Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar. "We plan to develop around 30,000 units in 2020, and the first lot is expected to hit the market soon," he added. Soon, five laboratories each in seven IITs will be at par with the best in the world, thanks to project 'Vishwajeet' that aims at catapulting 7 IITs to the top league of <keyword id="3119168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-academic-rankings">global academic rankings</keyword>. 
 During a recent meeting of the <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Directors, it was decided that five laboratories each at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee will get funding from government and industry, to make them at par with the world's best. 
 
It was also discussed that the 1:10 teacher-student ratio is desirable from the current 1:15. The HRD ministry has instructed IITs to hire faculty, foreign talent too. In this regard, the HRD ministry had put forward a proposal to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Home Ministry recently to ensure the norms related to allowing foreign faculty are made easier. 
 
At the meeting, IIT directors spoke on expansion of student strength to one lakh in IITs. They said the bulk of expansion will take place in post-graduate and Ph.D. Even foreign students will be taken. The reason to induct foreign students is because it is one of the criterion to make way into global university rankings. 
 
In the meeting there was also a clear division on the issue of breaking into top 100 ranking done by foreign agencies. Many directors felt that IITs should rather concentrate on improving themselves and expand the number of courses being taught including humanities.
