<ul><li>The coronavirus pandemic has already cast a shadow on business prospects and therefore the economy and employment all around the world. </li><li>Digital skills offer college graduates a better chance of getting hired as well as better salaries. </li><li><keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> offers two assessment programmes — ‘power programmer’ and ‘InfyTQ’ — which evaluates <keyword id="6390508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="freshers">freshers</keyword> and allows them to compete for a higher starting salary. </li><li>The ‘power programmers’ are hired at twice the slated salary but they go through a tougher test.</li></ul>One of the biggest issues in Indian IT industry is that the starting salaries for engineers have not improved in over a decade— it has gone up from about ₹3.5 lakh per annum a decade ago to about ₹4.5 lakh now. However, Krish Shankar, the Group HR Head of Infosys told Business Insider in an exclusive interview, what the tech major is looking for in campus hires this year — ‘power programmers’. “Some of the skills that I can either learn on Infosys campus with a ₹4.5 lakh salary or I can do something alongside an engineering degree and come on board. If you’re at the base without much of a skill, it is tough,” he said.

The Tata Group company said that the salary of freshers will be twice the slated entry level compensation, if they pass the test. If you don’t have the time on campus… InfyTQ is an elearning platform that brings in students, who are still in the third or final year of their course, to learn and give a test. Once they pass the test, they get an offer. “The InfyTQ is a learning-cum-assessment platform. They learn and pass the test and we shorten the training program and fast track them. Our fast track program training takes place in Mysore. If in the first six months they come in the top 5% or 10%, we accelerate their growth within two years and they can really move on to the next level. So, if people learn fast and perform, then I think the opportunities are phenomenal,” Shankar explained. The tech major shortlists these employees with internal coding tests and hackathons. “Even people who have already joined us, and can pass the test and hackathon, we tend to put them as power programmers,” Shankar added. The programme was initially started for the employees within the company, and later expanded to students across India. The number of <a href="https://infytq.infosys.com/">registrations went up to 300,000</a>, soon after it was introduced. Of the total students who completed the programme, 1,800 were hired — including 400 in specialist roles, which are normally open to students from elite colleges like IIT. Coronavirus is making the age of automation even tougher for job seekers The spread of coronavirus is threatening to bring the global economy to a standstill. In India, it has cast a shadow on potential hiring and that means students will have to try harder to improve the odds of getting a well-paying job. <ul><li>Indian IT employees are gradually getting back to the offices, as the government relaxed lockdown norms. </li><li>On May 7, Infosys re-opened its offices in Mangalore, Bengaluru, Mysore, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, and Hyderabad with nearly 5% of the total workforce. </li><li>While TCS, which has 95% of the employees working from home globally, has less than 1% of its employees currently working out of offices. </li><li>Capgemini is planning to go operational with 10% staff. “We will increase this number gradually depending on the guidelines to 25-30% over the next couple of weeks,” Pallavi Tyagi, CHRO at Capgemini India told Business Insider.</li></ul>Indian IT employees are gradually getting back to the offices, as the government relaxed lockdown norms. The Indian government recently allowed the tech companies to work with 33% staff in offices. Given that, several IT majors like Infosys, SAP Labs, TCS and Wipro are stepping up their efforts to resume operations, sending a few employees to work from office locations. On May 7, Infosys re-opened its offices in Mangalore, Bengaluru, Mysore, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, and Hyderabad with nearly 5% of the total workforce. That accounts for nearly 12,000 employees in India. With necessary precautions in place, the company plans to raise it to 40% in the coming weeks. “As lockdowns begin to ease across India, our CEO Salil Parekh, along with a few Infoscions, get back to our campuses that are equipped and prepared for the ‘new normal’,” Infosys said in a tweet. While TCS, which has 95% of the employees working from home globally, has less than 1% of its employees currently working out of offices. The company says it is in no hurry to work from offices. “We are resuming operations in a phased manner in select offices with minimal capacity after careful consideration and taking into account civic authority and state government orders. We have rolled out guidelines in our campuses which includes awareness sessions for employees and vendors, self-declaration forms, alteration of workspace layout and virtual collaboration tools for meetings. Other measures include temperature screening at all entry gates, use of hand sanitizers, periodic deep cleaning and disinfecting of office premises as also sanitising all Vehicles entering TCS premises,” TCS said in a statement. Capgemini, on the other hand, is planning to go operational with 10% staff. “We plan less than 10-15% of our employees to be in office currently depending on the criticality of the projects they are working on. We are working on a plan so that employees can come back to office in a phased manner. We will increase this number gradually depending on the guidelines to 25-30% over the next couple of weeks,” Pallavi Tyagi, CHRO at Capgemini India told Business Insider. At first, the company plans to send those employees to work from offices that are currently on ‘extremely critical projects’ or those who are unable to work from home due to client security guidelines. “We will slowly increase this number basis the guidelines and if there is a need for employees to be at the office. Else we will continue to permit work from home keeping in mind our employee’s health and safety. We have nearly 95% of our billable employees working from home and delivering to our clients,” Tyagi added. Meanwhile, companies like HCL Technologies and SAP Labs are introducing necessary precautionary measures to help their employees.
