Markets expected to open higher after a 6-session gaining streak

Now with inflation<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/retail-inflation-falls-to-a-15-month-low-of-5-66-in-march/articleshow/99440006.cms"> falling</a> to a 15-month low in March, there is a growing consensus that we may have entered the prolonged rate-pause territory. While making the rate-pause announcement, RBI governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said the MPC expected softer inflation going forward thanks to lower commodity prices. He stressed that the battle against inflation was not over yet and the possibility of further rate hikes cannot be ruled out. This was before the retail inflation numbers measured by the consumer price index (CPI) came in – at 5.66%. For March, it was below the RBI’s upper tolerance limit of 6%. The cooling inflation builds a strong case against future rate hikes, say economists. “RBI may have just hit the pause button as inflation trajectory looks below 6% for the rest of FY24 while deftly managing liquidity in the system,” said economists at <keyword id="2017241" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sbi-research" source="Orion">SBI Research</keyword>. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-revises-indias-fy24-growth-outlook-expects-softer-inflation-on-the-back-of-lower-commodity-prices/articleshow/99290005.cms">RBI fine-tuned</a> its inflation and growth projections for FY24 – while inflation expectation has been trimmed from 5.3% earlier to 5.2%, gross domestic product (GDP) expectations have been revised upwards from 6.4% to 6.5%, which suggests that the central bank is now on a surer footing about the Indian economy. The International Monetary Fund has also highlighted that three out of four countries in the world will experience disinflation in 2023. As far as monetary policy is concerned, the SBI report adds that 90 out of 147 countries have kept their rates unchanged, while 48 countries cut rates in the current cycle. A weak monsoon could hurt growth across various sectors of the Indian economy and force the MPC’s hand if inflation spikes again. If El Niño materialises, it could adversely impact farm output. Earlier, the Finance Ministry had also flagged its concerns amidst an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) prediction of above-normal temperatures in India this year. “An El Niño this year will negatively impact kharif sowing and next year’s rabi sowing due to lower availability of water,” said JM Financial. If farm output is affected, it could lead to higher prices and push inflation back up. For instance, unseasonal rains have already led to tight supply conditions, leading to a 22% increase in the prices of pigeon peas in Q4. However, earlier this week, the IMD projected a ‘normal’ monsoon with rainfall at 96% of the long-period average. A resurgent crude oil is another risk factor – in the last one month, Brent crude oil prices have risen by over 10% amid cooling inflation in the US. If the crude prices ride higher, it could keep prices elevated in India, forcing the MPC to rethink its rate-pause strategy. RBI's MPC 'decisively' in a rate-pause mode as inflation cools down

<ul><li><keyword id="6354706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indigo" source="Orion">Indigo</keyword> narrowed its losses by 66% on year to ₹1,064 crore in June quarter as against ₹3,174 crore last year.</li><li>Jet fuel prices rose by a massive 95.5% during the quarter and the airline also had to incur foreign currency losses.</li><li>Indigo says that if foreign currency loss of ₹1,424 is excluded, the company would make net profit of ₹360 crore.</li></ul>India’s biggest airline, InterGlobe Aviation aka Indigo, could have had a good April-June quarter as it was the summer season of travel, and the first such quarter without Covid lockdowns in two years, that brought aviation to a grinding halt. But this has only allowed them to narrow their losses to ₹1,064 crore in June quarter as against ₹3,174 crore last year. This is in spite of a four four-fold rise in revenue from operations to ₹12,855 crore as its capacity swelled by 145%. Along with economic activity coming back, it also had to deal with jet fuel prices rising by a massive 95.5% during the quarter, foreign currency losses due to a volatile currency and more. Indigo says that if foreign currency loss of ₹1,424 is excluded, the company would make net profit of ₹360 crore. “We reported the highest ever revenue generated by the company and thereby produced profits at an operational level. However, cost pressures on fuel and foreign exchange prevented us from translating this strong revenue performance into net profitability. effect of the summer quarter will go away. Revenue is expected to fall next quarter as schools open, monsoons, and the month of shrad when fewer people travel. “All these things tend to hold back the second quarter revenues. And it's been historically and not a one year phenomenon,” said Dutta in an analyst call. Dutta however hopes that if fuel and foreign exchange pressures ease, they would deliver profits in the third quarter of the fiscal year. “If fuel and foreign exchange behave just a little bit I think we could have a focused storm of profitability in the third quarter,” he said. ‘Giving up trains for us’ Indigo resumed scheduled international operations and are now roughly operating at pre covid international levels. The capacity deployed in June quarter was around 35% higher than previous quarter and around 7% higher than pre covid capacity. He added that corporate travel has been strong. “Also, people are traveling like crazy to tourist destinations. So markets like Srinagar, Leh, Dehradun, Goa are all performing very well. “We are getting substitution from rail into airline in all these short fall markets, whether it is Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Dehradun, Kolkata-Devgad, people are giving up trains and coming to us. This is a positive sign,” he said. A recent report by <keyword id="813133" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="colliers" source="Orion">Colliers</keyword> and <keyword id="3502552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="awfis" source="Orion">Awfis</keyword>, released on August 4, noted that 60%-70% of the telecom and consulting firms have started this trend. The rate of return to office was the highest among telecom and consulting companies, and the lowest was among IT and new technology companies, with less than a quarter of their workforce moving back to office space. The report also noted that one in two employers prefer a hybrid workspace, where employees can choose to work from home as well as the office. This is mainly because employers are now increasingly prioritising employee convenience and their overall well-being. The Colliers-Awfis joint report — based on the responses from 150 C-Suite executives of various companies having a workforce of up to 10,000 people — explores the status of return to work across different sectors. “The survey has made it clear that a distributed workspace strategy is the way to go for occupiers in this new era of experiential workplaces, as occupiers emerge from the after-effects of the pandemic. Flex spaces, in particular, are leading this growth, as occupiers from varied sectors are housing teams in flex centres across cities,” Ramesh Nair, CEO India and MD of Asian Market Development at Colliers, said. Overall, only about one in three (35%) companies across industries have initiated work from the office for 75%-100% of their teams. Simultaneously, 74% of the companies are looking at distributed workspaces as a strategy to shift from location-centric to people-centric workspaces, which will enable flexibility for employees. Going forward, 77% occupiers will include flex spaces as part of their workplace strategy, founder and CEO of Awfis Amit Ramani said in a statement. Telcos, consultancies bring employees back to offices even as techies stay home

This is especially worrying as the festive season has traditionally been the most lucrative period for the film industry. Over 34 movies were released between September 15-October 30 – the festival period that included Dussehra and Diwali – and most of them did lean business. Moreover, movies of big stars, like Akshay Kumar’s Cuttputtli, went straight to OTT platforms in spite of theatres opening up. “Every Diwali we have seen box office collections close to ₹200 crore for Hindi movies alone usually. This time if you look at numbers for Ram Sethu and Thank God, their collection is around the ₹120 crore mark. This is a big concern because such numbers are unacceptable on a Diwali holiday,” said Karan <keyword id="283800" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="taurani" source="Orion">Taurani</keyword>, senior vice president - research analyst, media &amp; consumer discretionary &amp; internet, Elara Capital, in an interaction with Business Insider India. To be sure, there were bumper collections in March and April, thanks largely to South Indian movies like RRR and KGF2 and a few odd Hindi films like Kashmir Files. However, the Bollywood movies that followed left the critics and the audiences cold. The festive season did not see any noticeable reversal in this trend. The one positive surprise has again been from a South Indian film – Kannada film Kantara impressed audiences pan-India, with just the Hindi version raking in <a href="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office-collections/">₹76 crore </a>in four weeks. This is higher than the total collection of most Hindi movies released in the September quarter – Laal Singh Chaddha raked in only ₹<a href="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office-collections/">58.73 cr</a>ore while Ek Villain Returns earned ₹<a href="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office-collections/">41.69 cr</a>ore. Despite Kantara’s success, Taurani believes we’re not close to the pre-Covid levels. “One reason is content is the need of the hour and second is because people are not going to movies due to star power. Kantara has fared much better in comparison to Ram Sethu and Thank God. Even if we add Kantara numbers to this, this will still be close to ₹150 crore to box office collections. Taking two-three weeks of Diwali festivities, we are still 25% lower as compared to pre-Covid levels.” Rajendra Singh Jyala, chief programming officer, INOX Leisure also echoed the sentiment that Q3 was a significantly slow month in terms of collections, especially in comparison to the performance in earlier quarters. “I can't share the exact numbers, but April-May-June were the best months in 2022. Then, July-September, were, unfortunately, not that great,” Jyala told Business Insider India. Beyond the festival season It’s not just the festive season that saw a dip in collections. The entire July-September quarter saw a poor performance in terms of Box Office collections, with the exception of Brahmāstra, and later, Ponniyin Selvan: I. “September was a very big month because of Brahmāstra. September was somewhere close to around ₹240-250 crore. October (collections) were close to ₹300 crore. Only ₹120-150 crore (was seen) in July and August in terms of box office (collections). So, in the months of July, August, we were down close to 65% versus the pre-Covid mark with an average run rate of ₹370-380 crore,” said Taurani. Additionally, the industry has high hopes from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan, slated to be released on January 26, 2023, as it has a mega star and as the movie is touted as a sort of a comeback for the actor. Industry experts are banking on the good cinematic experience that theatres provide to bring audiences back to the screens, as the sector still battles competition from OTTs who are continuing with the pandemic trend of showcasing new releases. “Cinema experience is different from how we watch at home - no matter how big a screen may be at your home,” Jyala sums it up. <ul><li>Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) shares gained over 7% after the oil refining and marketing giant approved the buyback of 10 crore shares.</li><li>The second-quarter net profit of HPCL more than doubled, led by the surge in refining margins and inventory gains</li><li>The gross sales revenue stood at ₹61,340 crore and was lower than ₹66,165 crore of Q2 of the previous financial year due to lower oil prices.</li></ul>The shares of Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) gained over 7% after the oil refining and the marketing giant said that its board had approved a proposal to buyback up to 10 crore shares, representing 6.56% of paid-up equity capital of the company, at ₹250 per share. The buyback price represents a 33.88% premium over HPCL’s last closing price on Wednesday. In a regulatory filing on the BSE, HPCL said that the buyback remains at ₹2,500 crore, but the number of shares could be higher than maximum buyback shares (10 crore) if equity shares are bought below the maximum buyback price of ₹250. <div type="image" title="HPCL" msid="79055262" hostid="261"></div> Through the buyback, HPCL’s minority shareholders are looking to get rewarded. The company will finalise the details of the buyback in the next two days. Strong profit growth is the secondary driver The second-quarter net profit of HPCL more than doubled on the back of a surge in refining margins and inventory gains — which is again the other major reason behind HPCL stock rise today. Net profit in July-September came at ₹2,477 crore as compared to ₹1,052 crore a year back, HPCL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Kumar Surana told the media on a conference call. “The significant improvement in the profitability in spite of challenges including lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic was a result of strategic planning in refinery and marketing operation, containing the degrowth to less than the industry, efficient inventory management and effective production placement,” he said. Cheaper crude oil contributed to strong growth The gross sales revenue stood at ₹61,340 crore and was lower than ₹66,165 crore of Q2 of the previous financial year due to lower oil prices. The firm earned $5.11 on turning every barrel of crude oil into fuel in the second quarter of 2020-21 fiscal as compared to a gross refining margin of $2.83 a barrel. This included a $2.33 per barrel inventory gain from buying cheaper crude oil earlier and processing in Q2. This translated into ₹1,780 crore of gain. Besides, the firm also had a forex gain of ₹524 crore, he said. The company said during the quarter, 303 new retail outlets were commissioned taking the total retail outlet network to 17,171 as of September 2020. HPCL also commissioned 37 new LPG distributorships during the quarter, taking the total LPG distributorships to 6,153 as of September 2020.
