Top hybrid cars in India in 2023: Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Honda City eHEV, and more

At the time of publishing this copy, the Nifty Auto index is trading flat while the benchmarks – Nifty50 and BSE Sensex – are half a percent in the green. India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki has delivered an 8% increase in sales for the month of June, as compared to last year, thanks to the improved performance of its SUV range like Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga – which surged two-fold. Even as sales of its mini cars – Alto and S-Presso fell marginally, compact car sales like Swift, Celerio, and Baleno slumped by 17%. However, its overall sales are lower than Jefferies’ expectations of 1.68 lakh units in June. As per Anand Rathi, the company management expects 5-7% industry volume growth in FY24, and Maruti Suzuki volume growth in double digits. The stock fell around 0.8% in early trade. Tata Motors posted a flat sales of 1% growth in domestic sales in June. Jefferies predicted that Tata Motors will see a 4-5% YoY decline mainly led by lower LCV volumes. Commercial vehicle sales fell by 15%, even as passenger sales went up by 8%. However, Girish Wagh, executive director of Tata Motors says that they showed a month-on-month improvement. “For the month of June 2023, they were 20.2% higher than the vehicle sales registered in May 2023. Looking ahead, the promising monsoon and continuing infrastructure thrust by the government augers well for the CV industry, even as it faces the headwinds of high interest rates, fuel prices and inflation,” said Wagh. The stock too has been trading flat as it fell by 0.2% in early Monday trade. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra’s stock was trading higher by 1.6% as it presented a strong 21% growth in overall auto sales. The BSE auto index is trading down by 0.6% as of 11:44 am, with most stocks in the red. 2W sales suffer on tepid exports Bajaj Auto sales fell by 2% overall, but the fall is lower than expected as Jefferies predicted it to fall to 3.3 lakh on account of lower exports. However, the automaker withstood it to 3.40 lakh. In spite of it, the stock fell by 1.1%. TVS Motors’ sales grew 4% but the growth was lower than analyst expectations – leading to a 0.7% fall in the stock. Hero Motocorp stock also fell by over 1.7% after it reported a 9.8% fall in sales. The company however hopes sales will pick up in the coming months. “The onset of monsoon in most parts of the country and overall economic indicators bode well for a growth in demand, and industry Smooth ride for M&M in June but Bajaj and Hero Motocorp stutter

In a bizarre development, the Securities &amp; Exchange Board of India (<keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword>) has released a list of some nine <keyword id="65338" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="Orion">Income Tax Department</keyword> defaulters comprising companies and individuals who have reportedly gone 'missing' and untraceable. The matter came to light when the SEBI Recovery Officers attempted to serve the notices of demand on these defaulters against whom the Recovery Certificates have been drawn up. Some of the defaulters who have to cough out unspecified amounts of dues are missing for the past nearly two years, and some others untraceable for the past two weeks, from one or multiple addresses available with the market regulator. They are: MYNK1906 Industries India Ltd, with three known addresses, one at Vile Parle and two in south Mumbai; Inducon India Ltd., with two addresses, one each in south Mumbai and Andheri, (both untraceable since April 27, 2021). There's Classic Press International Ltd., with two addresses in Goregaon suburb, but is said to be out of bounds since June 17, 2021. Three others that are 'missing' since July 19, 2022 from multiple addresses are: Goodearth Financial Services Ltd, from Vile Parle east; <keyword id="15907249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aci-infocom-ltd" source="Orion">Aci Infocom Ltd</keyword>, operating from three addresses in Kandivali and three in Nariman Point; and Tejoomals Industries Ltd, not located at its sole address in Santacruz. Rajendra Mining Spares Co. Ltd, working from two locations in Andheri east has gone untraceable since July 26, 2022; Gloria Leasing Ltd, operating from south Mumbai and Karjat in Raigad, not available since September 29, 2022. Dynavox Industries Ltd, functioning from two neighbouring locations in Worli, has become missing since this month, December 6, 2022. Welcoming the SEBI move, <keyword id="15907248" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="trade-unions-joint-action-committee" source="Orion">Trade Unions Joint Action Committee</keyword> (TUJAC) <keyword id="352912" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="convenor" source="Orion">Convenor</keyword> and banking expert Vishwas Utagi said that it is "a matter of serious concern" how these entities and the individuals connected with them have abruptly gone off the radar, and must be probed. "These companies are liable to pay their dues and various government taxes... If they don't come forward, it will pave the way for SEBI to move other agencies and invoke relevant laws to attach and sell off these defaulters' assets to recover its outstanding amounts," Utagi told IANS. Admitting to the 'untraceable defaulters', the SEBI said that it has not been able to serve the Notice of Demands on them "at their last known address". The SEBI has 'advised' these defaulters to contact the Recovery Officer Srishti Ambokar vide a letter or email within a fortnight by January 12, 2023. It has also appealed to the general public that if anybody has any knowledge on the whereabouts of these defaulters, they can write/email to the Recovery Officer by the same date, though in this era, no telephone numbers are provided. Market regulator SEBI issues list of 'most wanted defaulters' - all untraceable

Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a double-digit growth in dispatches to dealers, while Kia saw a dip in wholesales last month. MG Motor India also reported a double-digit increase in retail sales in June 2023 compared to the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker, said its domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 8 per cent to 1,33,027 units in June against 1,22,685 units in the year-ago period. Sales of mini cars, comprising Alto and S-Presso, fell marginally to 14,054 units compared to 14,442 units a year ago. Similarly, sales in the compact segment, models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire, slumped 17 per cent to 64,471 units from 77,746 cars in June 2022. Utility vehicle sales, including Brezza, Grand Vitara and Ertiga, however, surged over two-fold to 43,404 units compared to 18,860 vehicles in the year-ago month, MSI said. MSI Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava said the automaker grew faster than the industry in June, enabling it to scale up its overall market share by 2.4 per cent to 41 per cent. The overall passenger vehicle industry dispatches grew by 1.9 per cent to 3,27,700 lakh units from 3,21,600 lakh units in the year-ago period, he said. MSI, on the other hand, dispatched 1,33,027 lakh passenger vehicles last month, up 8 per cent from 1,22,685 lakh units in June 2022. Srivastava noted that the domestic passenger vehicle segment has crossed 20 lakh sales-mark in the first half of the year, a 10 per cent growth over 18.31 lakh units dispatched in the January-June period of 2022. MSI dispatches to dealers during the period stood at 8,61,000 units over 7,87,000 units in the corresponding period a year ago, he added. He noted that the company's SUV market share rose to 21 per cent in the April-June quarter this fiscal, compared to an 8.5 per cent market share in the same period of the preceding fiscal. Srivastava noted that with the addition of new models like Jimny and Fronx, the company remained hopeful of attaining around 25 per cent market share in the segment to take the top slot in the segment by the end of the current financial year. On supply chain shortages, he said the situation is expected to get better in the current quarter. MSI currently has a pending order backlog of 3.55 lakh units, he stated. When asked about challenges, Srivastava said that high-interest rates and chances of an erratic monsoon were some of the factors, which the company was closely monitoring. Rival Hyundai Motor India reported a 2 per cent rise in its domestic sales at 50,001 units last month from 49,001 units in June 2022. "There is a positive customer traction for all our products and Verna, Creta and Tucson have attained leadership positions in their respective segments in the first half of CY23," HMIL COO Tarun Garg said. Toyota Kirloskar Motor also said its total wholesales increased 19 per cent to 19,608 units in June compared to 16,512 units in the year-ago period. Its domestic dispatches stood at 18,237 units while overseas shipments were at 1,371 units. "Ever since the launch of Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross, we are witnessing continued high acceptance by our customers," TKM Vice President (Sales and Strategic Marketing) Atul Sood said. On the other hand, Kia India said its domestic wholesales declined 19 per cent to 19,391 units in June. The company dispatched 24,024 units to dealers in June 2022. "We have kept our performance steady with healthy growth, despite the realignment of our manufacturing process to accommodate the development of the new Seltos this month," Kia India National Head (Sales &amp; Marketing) Hardeep Singh Brar said. With the launch of new Seltos, the automaker aims to be one of the top mid-SUV segment leaders again and hopes for a strong sales surge, he added. Another automaker, MG Motor India reported a 14 per cent increase in retail sales at 5,125 units in June 2023 against 4,504 units in the same month last year. "Supplies were disrupted in the wake of cyclone Biparjoy though customer demand should now gain momentum following the monsoon as India gears up for a long festive season," the company said.

The MG Comet EV is a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV sold in the Indonesian market. It is expected to be launched on April 19, 2023, and priced at around ₹10 lakh, making it one of the most affordable cars in the electric car segment. The Comet EV will have a boxy design that maximizes passenger space. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Tata Punch EV</h3>Tata is actively launching its cars in the electric market. After the Tiago EV, Tata is expected to launch the Punch in the EV market. The Punch is expected to retain much of its looks from the petrol variant. Tata is expected to launch the Punch in September 2023 at an expected price of ₹12 lakh. We can expect the Tata Punch EV to offer two battery packs, one for its medium range and another one for the long range. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Tata Altroz</h3>The Altroz is a premium range hatchback, and now Tata is expected to launch the Tata Altroz in the electric car segment. The Altroz is expected to borrow features from the Tata Nexon EV, like the electric powertrain and PDU (Power Distribution Unit). Tata is very tight-lipped about the Tata Altroz EV launch date, so we do not have any expected launch date. However, the Altroz EV is expected to be launched at around ₹14 lakh. <h3 style="line-height:1.2;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Volvo C40 Recharge</h3>The Swedish luxury car company has confirmed the launch of the Volvo C40 Recharge in late 2023. The C40 Recharge will be the second electric car from Volvo. Globally, the C40 Recharge is available in two variants: the Single Motor Drive and the Twin Motors, and both are expected to be launched in India. Volvo India is focusing on increasing its electric car market. The C40 Recharge is expected to be launched at a price range of around ₹60 lakh. Maruti Suzuki may launch the C-MPV in late 2023 at an expected price of around ₹20 lakh. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Nissan X-trail</h3>Nissan recently unveiled the fourth generation of the X-Trail. The Nissan X-Trail is expected to be launched in mid-2023. The X-Trail is an SUV by Nissan that will have two variants of hybrid systems: Strong Hybrid and Mild Hybrid. The car is expected to be launched at around ₹40 lakhs. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:16pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Nissan Qashqai</h3>The Nissan Qashqai is an SUV based on the CMF-C platform, which was jointly developed by Renault and Nissan. The Qashqai is expected to have a 1.3L petrol engine supported by a Mild-Hybrid power motor. The car is expected to be launched at around ₹30 lakhs. The Qashqai is expected to be launched after the Nissan X-Trail so we can expect its launch in late 2023 or early 2024.
