Bengaluru, July 15 (IANS) SoftBank-backed InMobi on Wednesday announced the appointment of Jayesh Ullattil as Vice President and General Manager for India.<br /><br />Prior to joining InMobi, Ullattil was Vice-President of Sales in Hotstar and instrumental in building strategic partnerships with leading telecom, original equipment manufacturers, consumer durables and media brands.<br /><br />In his two decades of industry experience, Ullattil has worked with leading consumer brands that include Perfetti Van Melle, Nokia, Henkel, Blackberry and more recently, BCCL and Hotstar.<br /><br />In his new role, Ullattil will be responsible for growing the mobile advertising and marketing business for InMobi across its portfolio of products, including programmatic and performance businesses, and data and online research platforms.<br /><br />"We are glad to welcome Jayesh onboard the InMobi leadership team in Asia Pacific. InMobi appoints Jayesh Ullattil as GM for India

<br /> The mobile advertising firm <keyword id="164941" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="inMobi">InMobi</keyword>, which is backed by SoftBank, will have to pay $950,000 in civil penalties and implement a comprehensive privacy program so that it can settle the case that federal trade commission has put up against it. As per FCT, it deceptively tracked locations of "hundreds of millions of consumers - including children - without their knowledge or consent" so that it could serve geo-targeted advertising. <br />

As per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/inmobi-to-pay-950000-fine-to-settle-ftc-charges-for-tracking-location-of-consumers-without-consent/articleshow/52878938.cms">ETtech</a>, a statement by FTC noted that as per the settlement, InMobi is subject to a $4 million penalty; however, the agency suspended the fine to $950,000 because of its financial condition. <br />

As per the complaint, InMobi was tracking consumers' location without asking for their consent and even when consumers had actually denied it the permission. <br />
 <br />
"InMobi created a database built on information collected from consumers who allowed the company access to their geo-location information, combining that data with the wireless networks they were near to document the physical location of wireless networks themselves. InMobi then would use that database to infer the physical location of consumers based on the networks they were near, even when consumers had turned off location collection on their device." FTC said in a statement. <br />

The agency added that InMobi's software also tracked location in thousands of apps "that were clearly directed at children, in spite of promising that it did not do so". While doing this, it also violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). <br />

In addition to the fine, InMobi is also directed to set up a comprehensive privacy program that will be independently audited every two years for coming two decades. <br />

InMobi, on the other hand, has said that it discovered technical error at its end that led to this. It also said that it promptly notified the FTC about this on discovering it, making it clear that this was not deliberate. <br />

InMobi fined $950,000 for tracking consumer location without consent

<ul><li><keyword id="164941" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="inMobi">InMobi</keyword>’s latest offering – <keyword id="184851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="glance">Glance</keyword> – raised $45 million from <keyword id="8083508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mithril-Capital">Mithril Capital</keyword>, which was found by <keyword id="380555" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Peter-Thiel">Peter Thiel</keyword> and Ajay Royan.</li><li>InMobi’s Glance claims to be India’s first ‘screen zero’ platform through which it shows content to users on the lock screen of their smartphones. </li><li>It has 50 million daily active users currently.</li></ul>Indian unicorn InMobi’s AI-powered content platform Glance raised $45 million from Mithril Capital – the investment firm founded by legendary investor Peter Thiel and Ajay Royan. <br /><br />Glance boasts of being India’s first ‘screen zero’ platform through which it shows content to users on the lock screen of their smartphones. The platform claims to have more than 50 million active users daily, who spend 22 minutes per day on it.<br /><br />“Glance is changing the landscape of content consumption to address the demands of the ‘attention economy’ we currently live in,” said Naveen Tewari, Founder &amp; CEO, InMobi Group. <br /><br />Tewari further said that the investment from Mithril will help them expand to new geographies and bring in innovation in content-format, personalization and content discovery. Glance is currently available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in India, and Bahasa in Indonesia. <br /><br />However, this first investment round of Glance is part of a bigger financing round. <br /><br />InMobi, which was founded in 2007, is one of the leaders in the adtech space and was India’s first unicorn, which is valued at over $1 billion. <br />

Peter Thiel’s investment firm backs Indian unicorn InMobi’s AI content platform

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>India based mobile ad network InMobi has dismissed reports that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-google-in-initial-talks-to-buy-indian-startup-inmobi-source--2015-3">Google is lining up a $1 billion bid to acquire the company.</a></p><p>In an email sent to employees, <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/InMobi-is-not-for-sale-CEO/articleshow/46534144.cms?">reported by The Times of India</a>, InMobi CEO Naveen Tewari said he wanted the company to stay independent.</p><p>It read: "We are building an amazing company and the market space is very huge. Given the level of innovation and disruption we are about to cause, there is no reason to sell."</p><p>The email ended with the line: "If you like the fact that we are not selling, let me hear a big round of applause from the floor."</p><p>The office erupted into applause, The Times of India reports. </p><p>Business Insider has contacted InMobi for comment.</p><p>Sources with direct knowledge of the situation had told Business Insider on Wednesday that the deal was off the cards too (although they did confirm that talks had taken place). But the rumored acquisition was the talk of the ad industry earlier this week. We caught up with a bunch of ad tech executives to get their thoughts on the situation.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">InMobi is the largest independent mobile <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> player outside of Google and Facebook. The company has more than 900 employees and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hottest-pre-ipo-adtech-startups-2014-3?op=1">Business Insider has previously estimated its revenues at $372 million.</a> The company turned profitable in the fourth quarter,<a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/03/11/inmobi-plans-to-stay-independent-dismissing-rumors-of-talks-with-google/?_r=0"> according to The New York Times</a>. InMobi claims, in a press release sent to Business Insider last year, that its network reaches 872 million active users, spanning over 200 countries.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Of all the adtech executives we spoke to about the potential deal, the intention from Google was clear: It wants to make a land grab in the mobile space, having lost ground since its $750 million AdMob acquisition in 2009.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ario Paparo, CEO of adtech startup Beeswax, told us: "I think there are a couple of factors at work. First, after a very fast start in mobile ads with the AdMob acquisition, Google has lagged significantly behind Facebook and Twitter's MoPub unit of late in attracting developers to AdSense and AdX as their monetization vehicles. Mobile developers are choosing various other SDKs to include in their apps and it takes quite a bit of effort to stay on top."</span></p><h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A Google acquisition of InMobi "is not perfect"</span></h3><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Marco Bertozzi, president for global clients at Publicis Groupe's adtech arm Vivaki concurred. InMobi would give Google a chance to scale up  - particularly in regions such as India and Asia where InMobi is strongest - providing advertisers with more reach and data.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He added: "My personal opinion is Google wants to jump forward as fast as it can and regain some ground, although not perfect, it will achieve some of those objectives quickly. It is a scale play, Google knows that sometimes this kind of purchase is needed, the idea of building and creating a network is pretty labor intensive as well."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The fact that the InMobi purchase "is not perfect" in terms of answering Google's mobile advertising scale challenge was repeated among the adtech execs we spoke to. While everyone we spoke to agreed Google needs to make this kind of acquisition, many found it difficult answering the question: Why InMobi?</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One senior agency source who asked not to be named questioned why Google would look to buy a company of 900 people, mostly sellers and engineers, when Google has plenty of talented sellers and engineers itself - arguably the best in the business. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He also questioned whether InMobi has enough bespoke, patented technology to make a $1 billion deal worthwhile, although he concluded that the appeal may be in the relationships the ad network has with partners and telecoms operators in India - the next burgeoning market for smartphone growth. </span></p><h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"It will be interesting to see what the FTC has to say about this land grab"</span></h3><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">An InMobi acquisition would also be a regulatory challenge for Google, according to ChoiceStream's VP of marketing Bill Guild.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He told us: "Unlike the acquisition of AdMob which brought Google squarely into the mobile space, this seems like a simple land grab. Based on the scrutiny that the FTC paid to AdMob and the fact that Google today is a much bigger force in the mobile space than it was then, it will be interesting to see what the FTC has to say about this land grab.  Even though InMobi doesn't bring new technology or expertise to Google, the price might be worth it to gain a dominant position in world-wide mobile advertising."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With a Google acquisition off the table, InMobi is staying independent for now. InMobi dismisses the rumor it is being bought by Google: 'There is no reason to sell'

It has also been subject to scrutiny of late over funding, the exit of senior executives and talks of an initial public offering.<br />

All of this comes at a time when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=InMobi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">InMobi</a> was reported to be struggling to chart out a sustainable business model that can adapt to the changes in the online and mobile advertising space.<br />

<strong>How difficult is it gain market-share in a world dominated by tech's big daddies <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> and Facebook?</strong><br />
Those are big companies with big market share. Companies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=InMobi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">InMobi</a> are the only ones that can take market-share away from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Facebook&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook</a>. Every one of our customers is willing to look beyond conventional platforms, and have a third pillar. They won’t consider us if we are not technologically at par, if not more advanced than those guys.<br />
<br /> Over the next 12-18 months, I see <keyword id="164941" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="inMobi">InMobi</keyword> emerging as the third biggest marketing platform globally.<br />

<strong>What about the exit of senior executives?</strong><br />
We’re extremely clear about where we’re headed. That’s why our attrition is extremely low.<br />
<br />
We offer new opportunities to young talent. I don’t consider my competition to be companies, but entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is the freedom to take your own decisions, and that’s what we offer.<br />
<br />
We have had 44 startups come out of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=InMobi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">InMobi</a>, and 25 odd people have joined us back. No one does that if they aren’t sure of the company and its culture.<br />
<br />
<strong>You’ve spoken about the lack of product talent in India.</strong><br />
That was 7-8 years back. Currently we don’t have issues in hiring or retaining talent.<br />
<br />
In fact, we don’t subscribe to flying people in to solve internal problems. That’s the wrong model. They come in with an inflated sense of how India works. That comes from a position of what it’s like in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Silicon Valley</a>.<br />
<br />
You have seen the lack of feasibility of that model pan out in every company that tried it. Every one of those people left in a year. That’s why our leadership is essentially home-grown.<br />
<br />
<strong>Are you looking to raise more money, and are you struggling?</strong><br />
The second one is easy. The answer is no. We don’t need further capital. We’re pretty well set in terms of our financials.<br />
<br />
There’s a practical answer to the first question. Our corpus team explores strategic partnerships all the time. It’s their job. Some of these have investments linked to it. These are done once every 2-3 years. Before deciding on one, you need to explore 50 more opportunities. People should not confuse the role of looking for these partnerships actively with anything else.<br />
<br />
Our business works on a 40% gross margin and that too at a very large scale.<br />
<br />
<strong>Nine years on, InMobi is looking to be profitable this fiscal. What will contribute most to fuel further growth?</strong><br />
From a market perspective, the two major markets will be US and China. From a client perspective, performance advertising will clearly lead the way. It’s been a big factor, and will continue to remain a significant one. Commerce advertising is also set to explode as commerce companies do well.<br />

Video is not a big driver till date. However, it’s starting to take off.<br />
<br />
<strong>Where does India figure in terms of market size?</strong><br />
India has a smaller share in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=InMobi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">InMobi</a>’s business today. It’s a strategic opportunity we’re invested in, just like we did for China 4 years ago. We were positive of China’s growth, and we are currently market leaders there in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=digital+advertising&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">digital advertising</a> space.<br />
<br />
Given India is only 2-3 years behind China, it’s a market with massive strategic opportunities for us. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mobile+advertising&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mobile advertising</a>’s share in India has been low. We think starting next year, that’ll change drastically and grow 50-60% YoY.<br />
<br />
<strong>You reportedly downed shutters on the animated-discovery commerce part of Miip. Why’s that?</strong><br />
We haven’t closed down anything. It’s only a trajectory to get to that position. Honestly, that was always a part of that trajectory.<br />

The “Decoding the 2021 Festive Shopper” report by InMobi reveals that connected consumers in India plan to spend INR 21,230 on average, 42% higher than last year. Clothing and accessories, personal-use gadgets, and home appliances top the chart as most popular shopping categories. InMobi surveyed over 2500 smartphone users across 80 tier-1, tier-2, and tier-3 cities and clusters in India using its consumer intelligence platform Pulse, to throw light on consumer preferences, shopping patterns, peak-shopping timelines, and device usage patterns.<br /><br />According to the report, 68% of the respondents plan to shop online this festive season, with 43% of Indians increasing their online shopping budgets this year, and parallelly, 39% decreasing their offline shopping budgets. Additionally, 1 in 3 respondents that hail from tier 2 and tier 3 cities claim to be first-time online shoppers.<br /><br />Commenting on the growing importance of mobile in the festive shopping journey, <keyword id="3633879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasuta-agarwal" source="Orion">Vasuta Agarwal</keyword>, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at InMobi shared, “The festive season always remains about larger-than-life emotions, get-togethers, and a plethora of traditions. Amongst all this constancy, mobile has emerged as the medium for connected consumers to learn, explore, communicate, and buy. Our research shows that over 60% of respondents use their mobile to research, explore, or make the final purchase. This makes it extremely critical for brands to be mobile-first in their festive strategy to win the connected festive shopper this year.”<br /><br />In India, the seasonal celebrations continue from the beginning of September to the end of the year, and the one thing that stays consistent throughout these four months is shopping. Almost 60% respondents in T-1, T-2, and T-3 cities plan to make purchases in the period before Dussehra, defining the peak timeline for their festive shopping.<br /><br />The report also reveals deeper insights on the evolving shopping patterns this year among the Bargain Hunters, Category Explorers, and Brand Lovers segments.<br /><br /><ul><li>47% of festive shoppers fall in the Bargain Hunters segment, as they are unsure on the categories they plan to purchase and are primarily on the hunt for attractive offers, irrespective of category.</li><li>39% of festive shoppers fall in the Category Explorers segment as they have decided the categories that they intend to shop in but are yet to finalize the exact brand or product. They are expected to spend 20% higher than last year.</li><li>14% are Brand Lovers as they have already made their decisions on the specific brands and the products that they will purchase. With focus on jewellery and home decor, brand lovers have the largest budgets of all the three segments.</li></ul><br />“Over the past year, we have seen a diverse set of brands leverage InMobi’s shoppable mobile experiences and online to online/ offline commerce solutions to drive relevant engagement with connected consumers,” added Vasuta. “These solutions will play an even more significant role in the upcoming festive season as brands look to strengthen their online presence and drive growth.”<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Many people in the West will wake up this morning and scratch their heads in bewilderment at the news that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-google-in-initial-talks-to-buy-indian-startup-inmobi-source--2015-3">Google may be about to pay $1 billion for India's InMobi</a>.</p><p>They have never heard of InMobi.</p><p>That's a shame, because it is probably the single biggest mobile ad network company on the planet.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If Google bought it, it would solidify the search giant's domination of mobile advertising in an almost unassailable way. It would make Google No.1 for mobile ad revenues for years to come. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-is-in-danger-of-letting-facebook-steal-the-mobile-ad-market-2014-12">Google's mobile ad business is already twice as big as its nearest competitor</a>, Facebook, for instance.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">It would probably attract the attention of regulators - and the complaints of Google's competitors - because Google's massive market share for mobile ads would be so overwhelming. Google already has 90% market share for search in some areas such as Europe. It is already the biggest mobile ad company on the planet, with revenues in the billions (the company doesn't break out its mobile sales numbers).</span></p><p>InMobi, under CEO Naveen Tevari, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inmobi-raises-200m-from-softbank-to-overtake-google-in-mobile-advertising-2011-9">has taken $220.6 million in funding</a> and has about 900 employees around the globe.</p><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inmobi-ceo-naveen-tewari-talks-profits-and-acquisition-strategy-2012-6">Tevari told Business Insider in 2012</a> that his company serves a staggering 93.4 billion impressions monthly, across the planet. That probably makes InMobi an even bigger player in mobile app advertising than Google's AdMob network is. Google bought AdMob for $750 million - so you can see that on a valuation basis InMobi is a step above even that.</p><p>For a long time, InMobi was regarded as too big to acquire. We thought it would eventually stage some sort of IPO. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inmobi-ceo-naveen-tewari-talks-profits-and-acquisition-strategy-2012-6#ixzz3U4VnmDEt">Indeed, Tevari previously told Business Insider</a>, "<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We think this could be a standalone company." <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>India-based InMobi is the huge mobile <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> network with an estimated <a href="http://graphics.wsj.com/billion-dollar-club/">$2.5 billion valuation</a>, which, in the words of Forbes, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/abehal/2015/11/26/indias-inmobi-is-giving-facebook-and-google-a-run-for-their-money/#55df2069795d">"is giving Facebook and Google a run for their money</a>" thanks to its impressive reach to more than <a href="http://www.inmobi.com/company/">1 billion monthly app users.</a><p>The sheer scale of&#xa0;InMobi's network is one of the reasons the company manages to attract top talent from the likes of Facebook and Google. InMobi has also been linked as a potential acquisition target for the likes of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inmobi-says-it-is-not-for-sale-2015-3">Google</a> and <a href="http://marketingland.com/report-microsoft-to-buy-global-mobile-ad-platform-inmobi-159641">Microsoft</a>, although the company has dismissed these reports as rumors.</p><p>InMobi CEO Naveen Tewari tells Business Insider that he is aiming for InMobi to become one of the largest tech companies in the world over the next five to 10 years. He ruled out an IPO this year, however, saying the public markets wouldn't allow the company to "innovate as aggressively as we want to for the next couple years."</p><p>But beyond the size and growing buzz around the company,&#xa0;Tewari&#xa0;said there are two&#xa0;other important aspects to the culture inside InMobi that&#xa0;makes the firm&#xa0;such an attractive workplace compared to some of its better-known tech rivals.</p><p>The company has ripped up the rulebook when it comes to quarterly performance reviews, and he tells us InMobi staff take "great pride" that they are building a global tech platform that isn't based in Silicon Valley - even the employees based in its San Francisco office.</p><h2>InMobi pays 100% bonuses because quarterly performance reviews breed "mediocrity"</h2><p>Tewari explains that around three-to-four years ago, the company realized it would only succeed if its culture was designed to nurture innovation. To do that, InMobi needed to hire people it could trust and give them the freedom they require to create new products.</p><p>That kind of freedom, Tewari said, is usually expected at&#xa0;companies based in Silicon Valley - but in marketplaces like India, those cultures have not necessarily existed before.</p><p>But where InMobi differs from lots of its Silicon Valley counterparts is that it has done away with any sort of bonus or annual leave policies.</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">"We started paying everyone&#xa0;100% bonuses. We removed any sort of performance management system where you put down your goals for the quarter, or the year, then try measuring against those goals because when you are dealing with innovation, that has no meaning," Tewari said.</p><p>He thinks performance management&#xa0;systems are "the most pathetic thing to ever be created" because they only promote "mediocrity," sometimes preventing people from achieving more.</p><p>"Essentially we've created an environment where people can be free to create a new product that can change the world of advertising. Now we've seen an unbelievable level of results based on that, people in small teams that have created some great innovations for us, we are really excited by what we see," he added.</p><p>For example, <a href="http://gadgets.ndtv.com/apps/news/inmobi-unveils-miip-mobile-commerce-discovery-platform-in-india-724575">last year the company unveiled a discovery platform called Miip</a>, designed to drive e-commerce on apps such as Amazon and Paytm in India. <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/inmobi-india-china-idINKCN0RG1BG20150916">InMobi estimates Miip will bring in about $1 billion in revenue over the next couple of years</a>. And while Tewari wouldn't reveal dollar figures, he said the company's total&#xa0;revenue grew 80% year-on-year in 2015.</p><p>While there was pushback at first, Tewari said employees now applaud the decision to allow them more freedom by doing away with performance reviews.&#xa0;</p><p>"The job of HR and finance teams [now] is to figure out how to remove processes, not to add them, and they take pride in coming back and saying we have removed processes," Tewari said. "I think a lot of these things have to be mandated and led from a founder level because these are beliefs, and if someone else was try and do this they might find it a little hard - they might get questioned on it - as a founder I don't have that fear."</p><h2>The "pride" in not working for another Silicon Valley company&#xa0;</h2><p>Tewari said "pride" is one of the key tenets that connects staff at InMobi.</p><p>He added: "That level of pride, to build a global company out of India certainly connects a lot of people within InMobi, because they see they have an opportunity and environment to grow this company [into one of the largest global tech product companies.]"</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="InMobi" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56b498176e97c61f048b5170-960/screen%20shot%202016-02-05%20at%2012.39.10%20pm.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>InMobi</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><p>Tewari&#xa0;said that level of pride is expressed across its 17 international offices, not just among employees based in India.</p><p>"A lot of people within the company take pride in building a global platform. I know for a fact that when we started the London office, people took a lot of pride in joining us because they really wanted to make sure that if you're building a global platform, you're not a company that's just representing Valley interests," Tewari said.&#xa0;</p><p>He continued: "I saw that pride when we started in China [<a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small%20biz/startups/How-InMobi-breached-the-great-firewall-of-China/articleshow/48572421.cms">where InMobi is now the second-largest ad network in terms of scale, behind Tencent,</a>] there was a massive amount of pride that we are the most technologically advanced advertising platform in China, but also pride in the fact that they believe we are the first international technology company that was really successful in China. Nobody else has really been successful there."</p><h2>Ad tech funding drying up is "brilliant" for InMobi</h2><p>With no plans to go public or to be acquired, InMobi wants to keep focusing on product innovation in 2015. The company has raised more than $220 million in funding to date, <a href="http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2015-09-29/news/66987621_1_inmobi-in-mobi-ceo-millennial-media">mostly recently raising a $100 million debt financing round in September</a>.</p><p>Tewari says he agrees with the <a href="http://digiday.com/platforms/terry-kawaja-winter-coming-ad-tech-industry/">"Winter is coming" predictions for the ad tech sector</a> this year - the commonly-held view that there will be&#xa0;very&#xa0;few glittering liquidity events for the ad tech companies that have not yet gone public or been acquired by bigger players.</p><p>"The fact that funding has dried up in ad tech is brilliant for people like us because we believe we are innovating and differentiating - the things we are doing we know nobody else is doing probably outside of Facebook and Google," Tewari said. "In a market where funding is hard to come by, if you're scaled already, then you are in a brilliant position because nobody is going to catch up with you."</p><p>The global mobile advertising market is predicted to reach $114 billion in 2018, up from $50 billion in 2015, <a href="http://www.zenithoptimedia.com/global-mobile-advertising-expenditure-overtake-desktop-2018/">according to ZenithOptimedia</a>. <br /> A study by <keyword id="164941" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="inMobi">InMobi</keyword> has revealed that Indians are willing to pay between Rs 71 and Rs 129 for in-app purchases. This comes as a relief to developers who were doubtful whether it’s possible to monetise their creations in the market.<br />

21% of the respondents who participated in the InMobi survey said they had paid for in-app purchases for messaging software, while 18% said they would not mind spending some spare change for extras.<br />

According to the InMobi Report: <keyword id="11670639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="search-in-india">Search in India</keyword> – 2021 Trends Report, leveraging insights from the Microsoft Advertising team, search has been steadily growing as a digital medium as the demand for online services has significantly spiked in the last year. The report showcases insights on the shift in <keyword id="50390" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netizens">netizens</keyword>’ online behaviour and their search preferences from the data analysed between April 2020 and June 2021.<br /><br />Commenting on the search trends in India, <keyword id="9695430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Dosi">Rohit Dosi</keyword>, Director, Microsoft Advertising at InMobi, “In the last few years, digital content consumption has increased manifold. The pandemic has further accelerated digital adoption with people spending significant time on their PC, phones, and tablet screens. These behavioural changes have opened up newer avenues for search advertising and it will perhaps be one of the most effective mediums for brands to reach out to the right audience.”<br /><br /><strong>Physical Fitness and Financial Investments gain more focus amongst users</strong><br /><br />With people starting to spend more time indoors and restrictions on movement for the better part of the year, people increasingly opted for online consultations and nutritional guidance. During this period, there was a 125% increase in immunity-related searches, while home-fitness-related searches like online dance and home gym saw 28x and 14x increase respectively. <br /><br />There has been a shift in investment preference from physical assets to financial instruments in the past year and an increased preference for using digital channels. Asset management-related searches increased by 13x while those related to digital payments continued to grow at 12%.<br /><br /><strong>Hyperlocal, Entertainment, and E-learning searches witness significant increase</strong> <br /><br />Staying at home also provided a significant boost to e-commerce platforms. As people continue to prefer staying indoors, the focus has shifted from supermarkets to local and online grocery stores, and there has been a spike in the demand for hyperlocal delivery services. For instance, a 15x increase was observed for searches related to cake delivery with people now celebrating more at home.<br /><br />With theatres shut, concerts suspended, and people working remotely from their homes, there has been a massive increase in search volume for entertainment and music content. Branded searches in OTT &amp; music shot up as people opted for online content streaming services at home. A 28x increase was observed for the keyword ‘most popular Netflix series’ and 381x for ‘cricket live score’. There has also been a significant increase in online gaming which is reflected in the 52% increase in online games related searches. Additionally, searches for education and e-learning related content also saw a massive spike. People have been investing a lot of effort in future-proofing their careers by learning skills that would either help them transition to a new career or progress in the existing one. There has been a 367% increase in searches related to ‘learning online’, while a 103% increase in those related to ‘training’.<br /><br />“The massive shift in an individual’s online browsing and searching pattern has paved the way for brands looking to invest in search advertising. There has been a steady growth of search as a digital medium across PC and Mobile in India with approximately 25% of digital media spends accounting for search advertising.
