As earnings season begins, major companies' performance reports to decide market movement in coming days

The Big 3 tech companies – TCS, Infosys and <keyword id="141968" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hcl-tech" source="Orion">HCL Tech</keyword> painted a gloomy picture of the outlook ahead. With project rampdowns, revenue leakages and cautious clients — they have re-calibrated the revenue earnings for the entire year. TCS reported its first ever drop in constant currency revenues in four years. Infosys and HCL trimmed their revenue guidance for FY24, while TCS does not give guidance. Infosys now expects its constant currency revenues to grow anywhere between 1-2.5% and HCL expects the same to grow by 5-6% for FY24. Mega deal wins offer comfort: Brokerages As expected, the IT sector stocks have fallen in the last two days, yet brokerages have only done minor tweaks to their earnings estimates and maintained their buy or add ratings. Their mega deal wins, large order books; and confidence that they will hit the upper end of their guidance is providing them cushion, they say. Few have changed their ratings on the IT stocks. “From a long-term perspective, we believe TCS has built a resilient business model by securing multiple long-term contracts with the world’s leading brands. It has also established robust capabilities that will enable it to gain market share moving ahead,” said <keyword id="6407277" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="axis-securities" source="Orion">Axis Securities</keyword>. The ₹17,000 crore buyback TCS announced at a share price that’s premium to current its price also offers mid-term levers ahead. Kotak Institutional Equities (KIE) also said that Infosys has won a fair share of large deals to provide some visibility for FY25 growth. It cut its FY24-26 revenue estimates by 1-2% while maintaining a buy rating. Even for HCL Tech, KIE marginally tweaked its FY24-26 revenue estimates by 0.3-0.8%. With regards to the bad news delivered in Q2, little of it has come as a surprise. The street has been pricing in possible recession in the US and slowdown in Europe for over a year now. The IT sector gained very little or nothing from the recent bull run seen in the broader markets. In the last month, all of Nifty’s IT index constituents lost value with the exception of LTTS. Coforge, Tech Mahindra and HCL Tech shed over 4% of their values. macro-economic headwinds, IT companies are working to improve their margins. Not only have their headcount additions waned, they are pushing for higher utilization levels, lowering subcontracting expenses and also cutting down their discretionary spends much like their clients. TCS’ earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins went up quarter-on-quarter by 110 basis points to 24.3%. “We believe continued supply side tailwinds should help TCS protect and expand margins despite lower growth/mega deal ramp ups in the second half,” said a report by IIFL. HCL Tech and Infosys maintained their operating margin guidance for the year, in spite of revenue cuts – indicating that they intend to keep up their productivity levels. HCL expects its FY24 margins at 18-19%, Infosys’ expects its annual margins to be anywhere between 20-22%. Brokerages also back their confidence. “The 40 basis point margin (EBIT) improvement during the quarter was encouraging and indicated Infosys’ ability to manage its workforce despite the lack of an operating leverage opportunity. We now expect FY24 EBIT to go up 30bp YoY,” said a report by Motilal Oswal. Also, all three reported reduction of attrition to around 14% recording a dramatic slip sequentially. Brokerages not rattled by big 3 IT players' tepid Q2 performance

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], November 9 (ANI): AdPorts and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has reported robust financial results for the second quarter and the first half ending September 30, 2023, showcasing remarkable growth across key metrics. According to a press release by Adani, APSEZ witnessed a substantial YoY revenue growth of 26 per cent, reaching Rs 12,894 Crores during H1 FY24. The company's Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) recorded an impressive YoY growth of 49 per cent, amounting to Rs 7,429 Crores. Profit After Tax (PAT) increased by 33 per cent YoY, reaching Rs 3,881 Crores. The port EBITDA margin expanded by 220 basis points (bps) YoY to 72 per cent in H1 FY24. APSEZ achieved record cargo volumes of 203 MMT during H1 FY24 across its 8 ports and terminals. Mundra Port, the flagship port, celebrated 25 years of successful operations, handling over 16 MMT of cargo in a month and achieving the 4 Mn TEUs milestone in just 203 days. APSEZ expanded its logistics business, adding 11 rakes, Loni ICD, and warehouses at Mumbai and Indore during H1 FY24. Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director of APSEZ expressed satisfaction with the company's outstanding performance, citing a 14 per cent YoY increase in cargo volume and improved operational efficiencies contributing to the 72 per cent domestic ports EBITDA during H1 FY24. Adani said, "APSEZ achieved another milestone by registering its highest ever half-yearly revenue of Rs 12,894 Crore, EBITDA of Rs 7,429 Crore and cargo volumes of 203 MMT during H1 FY24. The splendid performance was on the back of a 14 per cent YoY increase in cargo volume coupled with improving operational efficiencies at our ports, which has resulted in our domestic ports EBITDA improving by 220bps YoY to 72 per cent during H1 FY24." APSEZ's under-construction port in Sri Lanka secured a funding commitment of USD 553 million from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). The logistics business recorded significant growth, with rail volumes up 25 per cent YoY and GPWIS volumes up 42 per cent YoY during H1 FY24. APSEZ achieved an emission intensity reduction of 48 per cent and a water intensity reduction of 58 per cent from the base year (FY2016) as of H1 FY24. The company completed a mangrove plantation of 4,200 Ha against its 2025 target of 5,000 Ha. S&amp;P (DJSI) provided APSEZ with a score of 65 (out of 100), ranking it in the top 4 per cent globally in the Transport and Transport infrastructure sector in its 2023 ESG assessment. Adani ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. records stellar H1 FY24 performance

Only Nifty IT opened the day in green with marginal gains of 0.29%, while media slipped by over 2% in early morning trade. Asian Paints declared its Q1FY25 results yesterday, which saw its quarterly net profit take a hit of about 25% to stand at Rs 1,170 crore. Sameet Chavan, Head Research, Technical and Derivatives at Angel One, notes that there have been no significant developments in the benchmark index, indicating a lack of substantial price movement. Specifically, the price structure has remained stagnant within a narrow range. The Nifty's trading range has notably shrunk to 80 points, making it more challenging for traders to navigate. However, despite this, the broader markets have continued to see active participation, which has contributed to maintaining a positive undertone for market participants. The support zone for Nifty is at 24,500–24,400, which is expected to see buyers stepping in when there are dips. However, it's not entirely clear if the trend will continue at higher levels, he added. "Currently, market participants are closely monitoring sectoral rotation and <keyword id="22454094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thematic-movers" source="keywords">thematic movers</keyword>, which are playing a pivotal role in driving market trends. It is advisable to continue observing and analyzing these movements until the key indices show a resurgence in momentum. Mr. Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, notes that after oscillating in a tight range, the index settled on July 16th, trading marginally higher at 24,613. Back-to-back DOJI candles at record levels indicate rejection at the higher levels; however, with each passing day, the support level is shifted higher, and now the immediate support is placed at 24,500. "An early indication from GIFT Nifty suggests a muted opening of the Indian equities, and we believe that the rangebound activity will continue. The same view holds for BankNifty. By registering a new high daily, the FMCG segment is performing as per our expectations, and we continue to maintain a positive stance. In the energy space, gas stocks are likely to extend their positive momentum (IGL and Petronet). After a day of correction, the IT sector resumed its uptrend. While it did beat street expectations of around 1% growth, the Bengaluru-based tech major also slashed the upper end of its constant currency revenue guidance for FY24. The company has also announced wage hikes which will be rolled out from November 1, 2023. The company’s dollar revenues sequentially grew 2.2% to $4,718 million in Q2 as compared to $4,617 million in Q1. It had earlier guided that its constant currency (CC) revenues for FY24 will grow at 1-3.5%. Half way through the fiscal year, it believes that it can grow anywhere between 1-2.5%. It has however retained its operating margin guidance 20-22% for the year. The net profit grew by 4.5% sequentially to ₹6,212 crore in Q2 from ₹5,945 crore in the last quarter. Large deal wins The company is also sitting on a robust orderbook of large deals. Mphasis, which is largely expected to report a revenue decline, is expected to deliver a better performance in terms of margins. “EBIT margin expected to be up slightly, by 10 bps QoQ, due to higher offshore mix and operational efficiencies despite revenue drag,” said IIFL Securities. EBIT refers to earnings before interest and taxes. LTTS, which will see the full impact of SWC acquisition this quarter, is expected to deliver double-digit revenue growth but its margins are expected to be impacted. The company acquired Smart World &amp; Communication (SWC) Business of L&amp;T in January 2023. “Organic margin to see strength aided by revenue growth but reported margin to see a dip of around 170 bps QoQ led by the impact of SWC integration,” says a report by Axis Capital. In spite of a bleak sectoral outlook, most analysts are closely watching how the second half of the year will pan out. They will be paying close attention to the deal commentary, growth that’s to be seen in the top clients, and hiring and attrition trends to hunt for any silver lining in the dark clouds. Mid-tier IT companies expected to outperform the big guns

The IT flock as a whole closed lower by 4.7%, with all the stocks in the index in the red, reflecting the caution amongst investors as far as the future outlook of the IT sector is concerned. The Bengaluru-based IT services firm’s commentary on demand outlook also has investors on edge. “During the quarter, we saw unplanned project ramp downs in some of our clients, and delays in decision-making, which resulted in lower volumes. In addition, we had some one-time revenue impact,” said Salil Parekh, Infosys’ chief executive officer and managing director. Analysts at Nomura stressed that Infosys’ commentary indicates a significant demand slowdown and rising cost prices as reflected in the trimmed margin guidance for FY24. “Infosys’ guidance of 4-7% year-on-year (YoY) revenue growth (constant currency) for FY24 (vs 13-15% for FY23 at the start of the previous year) and our expectation of 6-8% YoY guidance represent significant moderation in demand,” Nomura said, trimming its projected valuation of the company from 21x to 18x price-to-earnings. Analysts at HDFC Securities underlined that the recent senior-level exits could add to the growth risks for the company. Explaining why the company missed its own revenue guidance, CEO Parekh said that it was due to “ramp downs which were unplanned”. “This was across sectors. We saw some in telecom, some in high-tech, some in retail. Within financial services, [it was] mortgages, asset management and investment banking,” Parekh added. Sensex, Nifty50 shed over 1% in morning trade as IT stocks plummet post Infosys and TCS’ Q4 results

<ul><li>Shares of the entire IT pack companies have been beaten down significantly in 2023 due to macro headwinds.</li><li>The March quarter results of TCS, Infosys and HCL Technologies so far have also underlined the ongoing slowdown.</li><li>The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted.</li><li> Considering the macro economic challenges like high inflation, interest rates and banking crisis in regions, analysts expect the <keyword id="46964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it-sector" source="Orion">IT sector</keyword> to remain watchful for at least the next few quarters.</li></ul>India’s information technology services companies have been struggling amid heightened fears of recession across developed markets and the repercussions of a banking crisis in the US and Europe. And the situation is unlikely to improve until the end of the year, analysts say. Amid the ongoing weakness in the sector, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have also sold their stakes in IT companies. FPIs turned bearish on the IT and oil and gas sector in March – between these two sectors, they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/fpis-offload-it-oil-gas-stocks-worth-13734-crore-in-march/articleshow/99375107.cms">sold equities worth ₹13,734 crore. </a> Analysts expect pain to continue till end of 2023 Considering the macro economic challenges like high inflation, interest rates and banking crisis in the US and European regions, analysts expect it will be a watchful few quarters for the IT sector. "The biggest issue in the IT sector is growth slowdown and possibility of recession. So, as long as the slowdown persists and global growth remains uncertain, the market will expect lesser order flow, slower execution and pricing challenges. All these three factors will lead to IT companies suffering and valuations may also not expand. Investors will have to remain watchful for one to two quarters till there is some clarity on the global growth scenario," Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities told Business Insider India. The IT majors’ recently-posted fourth-quarter results and FY24 growth predictions tell their own story about the sector’s ongoing struggles. For FY23, IT major Infosys reported a growth of 15.4% in constant currency terms, lower than the guidance of 16-16.5% that it had given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-results-q3-fy23-infosys-raises-revenue-guidance-for-fy23-to-16-16-5/articleshow/96941824.cms">at the end of Q3</a>. Besides, it guided for a 4-7% revenue growth in FY24. This is the first time since FY16 that Infosys has guided for single-digit revenue growth in constant currency terms. Bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 11-quarter low constant currency revenue growth at $7.2 billion in Q4. TCS’ outgoing chief executive officer Rajesh Gopinathan said in a post-earnings conference that the company is seeing stress in one of its largest markets, North America. The recovery that the company had expected had not yet materialised. According to Sanjeev Hota, vice president, head of research at Sharekhan BNP Paribas, told Business Insider India, the macro uncertainty faced by the sector is unlikely to get better before 2-3 quarters. “(For) the entire calendar year, things look dicey and the industry may witness some kind of stability by the fag end of this year. US, North America, which are among the biggest markets for the sector, are not expected to improve in the near term." Banking crisis could impact June-quarter earnings The global growth slowdown has worked its way into the stock market performance of these companies with shares of the entire IT pack being beaten down significantly in 2023. The Nifty IT index is down 30% so far this year compared to a 3% fall in the broader Nifty50 index. The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted in March, triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US and the turmoil at Swiss lender Credit Suisse. IT majors like TCS, Infosys and Wipro have also neared their 52-week low since March considering IT companies’ exposure to US banks amid the banking sector crisis. BFSI clients are among the Indian IT companies’ largest clients. "Most of the price damage in the IT stocks has already been done. However, outperformance of the sector from the current level seems restricted till global macro headwinds stabilises. The sector valuation multiple is driven by earnings growth and if growth tapers off, there are little chances of the (IT) stocks outperforming the broader market indices,” added Hota. He, however, recommends staggered buying in TCS among the large caps and Persistent Systems from the mid-cap stocks, for long-term investors. The lower-than-expected growth in March quarter for sector leaders Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and HCL Technologies have underlined the ongoing slowdown. And analysts see this spilling over to the next quarter as well. “The banking crisis in US regional banks and European banks in March 2023 has induced greater caution and could impact the June 2023 quarter. We would not be surprised by a weak US performance across companies that are likely to report in the coming days,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts at JP Morgan have also highlighted the weakness in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and telecom verticals, which would impact Tech Mahindra and Mphasis as they have high exposure to these verticals. India’s IT sector likely to face macro headwinds until end 2023, say analysts

New Delhi, Shares of <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword> on Monday jumped nearly 14 per cent, adding Rs 18,168.68 crore to its market valuation, after the IT company's December quarter earnings beat estimates. The stock zoomed 13.10 per cent to reach its 52-week high of Rs 526.45 on the BSE. At the NSE, it rallied 13.65 per cent to Rs 529 -- its 52-week peak. It was the biggest gainer among the Sensex and Nifty firms. The company's market capitalisation (mcap) jumped Rs 18,168.68 crore to Rs 2,61,217.37 crore in early deals. Other IT stocks -- Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Technologies, and Tata Consultancy Services -- also saw frenzied buying. The BSE Information Technology index traded nearly 2 per cent higher. IT company Wipro on Friday posted a nearly 12 per cent decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 2,694.2 crore in the December quarter amid a "cautious" demand environment and clients making conservative investments. Vikas Jain, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities view the <keyword id="907991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro-results" source="Orion">Wipro results</keyword> as better-than-expected. Wipro's competitor Infosys posted a 7.3 per cent decline in net profit, while Tata Consultancy Services and HCL reported an 8.2 per cent and 6.2 per cent increase in consolidated profit in the this quarter of the ongoing fiscal. "Wipro's Q3 FY24 performance suggests inflection. Revenues (-1.7 pc on constant currency terms, quarter-on-quarter) came towards the upper end of the guided band, a first in the past four quarters," according to a report by JM Financial Institutional Securities Ltd. Wipro's consolidated revenue from operations fell 4.4 per cent to Rs 22,205.1 crore during the December quarter, as against Rs 23,229 crore a year ago. This is the fourth straight quarter when Wipro recorded decline in its IT services revenue. Wipro said it expects de-growth or almost flat growth in revenue in the next quarter, thereby indicating a lower growth for the company for the fiscal on a year-on-year basis.

All the IT stocks picked up after the two leading companies in the sector – TCS and Infosys – declared their earnings onThursday evening. TCS reported 1% sequential revenue growth above expectations of a flat growth. Its EBIT margins however hit a seven-quarter high even as its deal wins remained moderate at $8.1 billion, missing its guidance. But it also signalled a possible bottoming out of stress in the key segment of banking, financial <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/tcs-expects-the-bfsi-needle-to-start-moving-this-quarter/articleshow/106749184.cms">services and insurance (BFSI) segment</a>. “Management (of TCS) alluded to a macro environment similar to last quarter, with the long-term demand environment remaining strong. It called out its BFSI vertical bottoming out – a big read across for the entire sector, in our opinion,” said a report by Nuvama. The tech major surprised the street in a seasonally weak quarter, with an impact of furloughs. “We were expecting a flattish revenue growth in rupee terms while the company reported earnings that came above the expectations. The best thing is despite a seasonally weak quarter with macro-economic headwinds, TCS performed very well on most earnings parameters,” said Prashanth Tapse, senior VP of research at Mehta Equities. Infosys reported a 1% sequential decline in constant currency, which was lower than the 2% decline that the street expected. The Bangalore-based tech major shaved off its FY24 revenue guidance for the second time, to 1.5-2%. Yet, brokerages see positive levers. “Strong order book will result in acceleration in growth beyond FY24 as Infosys expects ramp up of many large deal wins of 9M from later part of 4Q. We continue to believe that Infosys’s FY24 growth lag is transient and will likely bounce back in FY25 unless new major adverse macro events unfold in US/Europe,” says a report by Equirus Securities. In terms of new deal wins, companies insist that little has changed in terms of sentiment in spite of the US Fed pausing interest rate hikes. However, the global macroeconomic situation has not deteriorated since the last quarter, which is being taken as a positive sign. “Even though there is no positive message from the management commentary, the market is likely to respond positively to the absence of any bad news. But the upside for TCS and Infy will be limited since it will take time for clarity to emerge on the prospects for the sector in FY25,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. On Friday morning, the benchmark indices rallied with support from buying in tech stocks.
