<ul><li>Earnings season will begin next week with the results of major IT companies -- TCS on April 11 and Infosys on April 13.</li><li>Digital transformation deals continue to boost IT sector’s growth along with rupee depreciation in the recent months benefiting the sector.</li><li>However, profit margins of these companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring.</li></ul>The March quarter earnings season will begin next week with the results of major information technology (IT) companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on April 11 and Infosys on April 13. Most analysts believe March is a seasonally weak quarter for IT companies and they expect moderate earnings growth amid margin pressures. The profit margins of IT companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring. “Sequential growth for Indian IT will be moderate in March 2022 quarter and in line with historical seasonal trends. Margins will remain under pressure resulting from elevated wage increases, onsite as well as offshore,” said Kotak Institutional Equities. The entire IT sector is struggling to retain employees including top five companies. There could be moderate risk to demand as fallout of the Russia-Ukraine imbroglio starts impacting key economies. Nonetheless, we believe double-digit growth is feasible for many,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Higher employee cost and shortage of skilled talent will remain the key challenges in the short term for IT companies. Profit margins of IT companies must be under pressure for January-March quarter due to record hiring and salary hikes

<ul><li>One of the top five IT services companies, <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword> reported a 25% decline in net profit for April-June quarter.</li><li>The management attributed the decline in profitability to rising employee benefits costs, which includes promotions and salary hikes.</li><li>However, high spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has paid off the firm’s attrition rate, which has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter.</li><li>Tech Mahindra’s attrition is still better than peers Infosys (28.4%) and TCS (23.3%).</li></ul>A fourth of Tech Mahindra’s first quarter revenues were eaten up by employee expenses, pushing its profits down by 25% on a sequential basis. The company’s CEO C P Gurnani says that this wage hike has reduced its attrition by 2% from last quarter, and predicts that it will reduce by another 4% in six months. But when asked for specifics, he said, “Attrition is as hard to predict as death,” at the post-earnings press conference. Its total income grew marginally by around 3% to ₹12,830 crore sequentially. Its constant currency revenue growth stood at 3.5%, the company said in its press release. “We are confident that we will be presenting to you continuously over the next few quarters industry leading growth. We are also confident that we will have an opportunity to work on the profitability levers,” said Gurnani. High spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has aided as Tech Mahindra’s attrition rate has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter. If it’s able to keep up with its predictions, in the next two quarters, it could come down to 18%. Tech Mahindra’s attrition is still better than peers Infosys which is at 28.4% and that of TCS at 23.3%. <ul><li><keyword id="10862" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> — the fourth largest IT services company in India — is planning to promote its 5,000 employees, thanks to the increasing attrition rate during the second quarter. </li><li>The company also rolled out a retention bonus of nearly ₹100,000 to its fresh campus hires. It also offered bonuses to employees with upto three years of experience. </li><li>Wipro added nearly 6,603 employees during the second quarter, taking the headcount to 181,453 from 174,850 in the last quarter. </li><li>The software major reported a net profit of ₹25.5 billion for the second quarter of 2019-20 fiscal. </li></ul>Wipro — the fourth largest IT services company in India — is planning to promote 5,000 of its employees, to check its increasing attrition rate. The technology giant recorded an attrition rate of 17% for the quarter ending in September. “Attrition (rate) has been a good story for us as compared to others. We have given salary hikes and now are looking at a huge number of promotions in the coming quarter. Around 5,000 people in the experience range of five to eight years will get promoted," Saurabh Govil, HR head, Wipro <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/wipro-plans-to-promote-around-5-000-employees-to-check-attrition-119102100017_1.html">told </a>Business Standard. The company also rolled out retention bonus of nearly ₹100,000 to its fresh campus hires and those with upto three years of experience. “Junior-level attrition is slightly higher than the company average. However, it is lower among performers as they get higher bonuses, incentives and salary hikes," Govil added. While auto and textile sectors face troubled waters leading to job losses, the IT sector seems to be rebounding with a positive hiring sentiment. Wipro added nearly 6,603 employees during the second quarter, taking the headcount to 181,453 from 174,850 in the last quarter. The three IT giants — <keyword id="6357150" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>, Wipro and <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> — collectively hired 28,157 employees in the quarter ending September. Wipro is also planning to hire more consultants so as to drive sales in the coming quarters. “We are hiring more people in this consulting space. It is paying us back, well," he said. Edible oil major Adani Wilmar Ltd edged lower by 1.79 per cent to 411.85 per scrip, despite the company reporting a 16 per cent increase in its consolidated profit to Rs 246.16 crore for the third quarter ended December 2022. <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>'s flagship Adani Enterprises was trading 5.56 per cent down at Rs 2038.55 apiece on BSE. RBI projected India's economic growth at 6.4 per cent for 2023-24, broadly in line with the estimate of the Economic Survey tabled in Parliament last week. It also estimated retail inflation to ease to 5.3 per cent in the next fiscal from 6.5 per cent this year on assumptions of lower imported inflation, even though core inflation remains sticky. The RBI's decision to hike the repo rate by 25 basis points was on expected lines but the policy focuses more on inflation despite the recent moderation in the number, bankers said on Wednesday. Analysts are of the view that after delivering the seventh hawkish policy on Wednesday, the central bank may pause after delivering a likely 25 basis points increase in the April review.

You can't blame some of the execs for being skeptical. The explosive growth in ESG spending has created a lot of confusion about its influence on corporate performance and investor returns, and research examining the trend has found mixed results. The ESG survey commissioned by Infosys, a global IT consulting and outsourcing firm based in India, found that there was concern about budgets, the timeline for a return on investment, and whether there would be a payoff at all. All this uncertainty explains why companies are more focused on ways ESG can enhance how customers and investors perceive them, Jasmeet Singh, executive vice president and global head of manufacturing at Infosys, said in an email. The benefits for a brand are the clearest path to a return on investment, Singh said.But, he said, companies that see ESG efforts only as good public relations risk overlooking more-tangible benefits. "Early initiatives — reducing energy and water usage, more efficient use of materials — provide measurable financial benefits in the form of savings," Singh said. "Some firms are able to parlay a commitment to ESG into new markets and business models, although that's rare."Still, more than 90% of executives surveyed said ESG spending delivered "moderate" to "significant" returns within a few years. None reported losses. Further analysis by Infosys found that a 10-percentage-point increase in ESG spending correlated with a profit growth of 1 percentage point.Singh added that many companies still didn't perceive ESG as a "value creator."Budget increases for ESG work are unlikely because of the economic uncertainty and high inflation; spending in these areas could be on the chopping block. In a mid-2022 <a href="https://assets.kpmg/content/dam/kpmg/us/pdf/2022/08/ceo-outlook-report.pdf">KPMG survey of more than 1,300 CEOs</a> around the world, 59% said they planned to "pause or reconsider" their ESG efforts within six months.Even so, there are changes a company can make that don't cost any money but deliver returns, Singh said. Governance had one of the strongest correlations with profit growth. Installing chief sustainability and diversity officers, putting an ESG committee at the board level, and allowing chief sustainability officers to sign off on funding for new projects all lead to better financial outcomes, the Infosys study found. But only about one-quarter of those surveyed said their company had all those elements in place, and 71% said there were no plans to hire a chief sustainability officer.Embedding those roles at the senior-executive level ensures they have the authority to accomplish ESG goals, Singh said.
