Infosys share price hits fresh 52-week high after highest-ever deal wins of over $3 billion

<ul><li>Infosys announced that it will consider buyback of equity shares during its board meeting set to take place tomorrow, on April 14.</li><li>Analysts estimate that shares may be bought up at ₹1,600 to ₹1,650 a piece.</li><li>According to them, the buyback is not because the management feels that Infosys’ shares are undervalued but because it is as per the company’s payout policy.</li><li>Infosys has thus far given out around 50% in dividend as what is left over will be spent on this buyback.</li></ul>Indian information technology (IT) giant, Infosys, may announce a buyback of equity shares after its board meeting scheduled for April 14. And, analysts estimate that the shares will be picked up between ₹1,600 to ₹1,650 a piece. This year they've given out around 50% in dividend. The rest of the amount, which comes up to around ₹11,500 to ₹12,500 crore, they will spend on this buyback,” explained Sanjiv Hota from Sharekhan. However, since the government announced that dividends will be taxable as per the effective rates rates for corporate shareholders — more commonly known as promoters — in July 2020, some companies have opted for the buyback route to save tax. “Dividends are not the most efficient method of payouts for a certain set of investors because of the much higher slab rates,” explained Prasad. It’s common practice for leading companies to have a regular buyback strategy in place. “What happens is that if you don’t give the buyback, there’s a lot more cash which is not yielding high returns,” Prasad explained. Infosys is not alone in the balancing act of paying out dividends and offering buybacks. Most IT companies do a little bit of both depending on their shareholder profile. “It’s a tender route where the promoters also end up participating,” said Prasad. Analysts estimate that Infosys may offer buyback of shares at ₹1,600 to ₹1,650 apiece

The demand for cloud computing and cybersecurity services has boosted both IT companies’ earnings. But despite the strong show, they have seen their share prices fall a day after earnings. While Infosys fell by as over 5%, Wipro dropped by nearly 7%. Coronavirus crashed Infosys stock more than whistleblower allegations

The tech behemoth announced a buyback of equity shares worth ₹9,200 crore and will be doling out a dividend of ₹15 per equity share. However, this time around, it's not a tender buyback but an open market buyback. This means ₹1,750 is the ceiling price, but that the shares could be bought back for a lesser price. The quantum of shares that are bought back will be determined accordingly. That’s over $2 billion in buyback and dividend for its shareholders this quarter. Analysts had predicted that the shares would go for anywhere between a 10% to 15% premium and it seems Infosys landed on the higher end of the estimate. . Infosys’ attrition worsened more in the January-March quarter reaching at 27.7% from 25.5% in the previous quarter. The IT major’s attrition rate is worse in the industry compared to other Indian peers, even more than TCS’ attrition rate of 17.4% in the same quarter. <div type="image" title="infosys attrition" height="900" width="1200" msid="90826018" hostid="261"></div>However, the management at Infosys said the attrition rate has come down on a quarterly basis as against the LTM (last twelve months) data disclosed. Moreover, it expects the attrition rate to decline gradually as it also kicks off hikes from April 1. “Attrition for the quarter has come down by close to 5% both in percentage and absolute headcount. So we talked that last quarter attrition had actually stabilised… of course the tail effect will continue to climb. Good news is we have seen stability and of course the intervention we are looking at like the April 1 hike plan, we should continue to see some improvement in them,” said Nilanjan Roy, chief financial officer at Infosys. Further, the company is looking to hire more than 50,000 employees in FY23 as against 85,000 it hired in FY22. Infosys has an employee base of 3.14 lakh, half of what TCS has. The company’s net profit for the March quarter rose about 12% to ₹5,686 crore with revenue growth of 22.7% year-on-year at ₹32,276 crore. Infosys has set a revenue growth guidance of 13-15% for FY23. Infosys is looking to hire 50,000 employees this year while expecting the attrition rate to come down

<ul><li><keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> reported a sequential decline in its net profit in the June quarter as high wage hikes weighed on it.</li><li>This caused Infosys’s EBIT margin to spiral down to the lowest point in the last two years.</li><li>Nomura has also lowered its earning per share (EPS) expectation by 1-3% for the next two fiscal years.</li></ul>India’s second largest IT services company Infosys reported a sequential decline in its net profit in the June quarter, as the high wage hikes weighed down on its margins. Infosys’s EBIT (or earning before interest and taxes) margin declined to 20.1%, the lowest in the last two years. The decline was due to multiple factors, including wage hikes, lower utilization and higher sub-contracting expenses, some of which will continue to impact the company in the ongoing September quarter as well. Brokerage firm ICICI Securities is of the view that the increase in travel costs, wage hikes for senior employees in Q2FY23 and supply-side cost pressures will weigh on Infosys margin. Nomura believes that the impact of wage hikes may be limited, while improvement of utilization and effects of price increases in contracts are likely to be gradual. Nomura has also lowered its earning per share (EPS) expectation by 1-3% for the next two fiscal years, factoring in lower margins, partly offset by better currency. Infosys’ competitor Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) is expected to outperform in this domain. Infosys’ revenue witnessed a sequential growth of 6.8% in the June quarter as its revenue stood at ₹34,470 crore. Meanwhile, the constant currency revenue growth stood at 5.5% sequentially and 21.4% year-on-year.
