Ignite the fire of innovation: The intrapreneurship advantage

Despite it’s political turbulence, <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> is strengthening its startup ecosystem. The <keyword id="6370579" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="proof">proof</keyword> being <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> based <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> beefing up its operations in the country, a key person has been appointed to supervise overseeing startup <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> and acquisitions in Israel. 
 In a news report by The Economic Times it has been learnt, <keyword id="24211" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chief-executive">chief executive</keyword> <keyword id="6369763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Sikka">Vishal Sikka</keyword> has appointed <keyword id="2845467" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jake-Klein">Jake Klein</keyword> for the role. 
 Klein had a similar function at SAP, where he was a senior vice president overseeing startup investments and helping <keyword id="497995" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAP-Ventures">SAP Ventures</keyword> expand in Israel. 
 At Infosys, he has been appointed as <keyword id="2845800" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vice-president-of-corporate-development-in-Israel">vice president of corporate development in Israel</keyword>. Infosys, India's second-largest software exporter, has set aside at least a quarter of its $500-million Innovation Fund for investments in countries like India and Israel, ET reported in March. 
 Sikka is keenly tracking startup hubs in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> and Israel as Infosys hunts for disruptive solutions for new-age digital problems faced by customers such as <keyword id="6374849" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-America">Bank of America</keyword> and <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword>. 
 Top rivals such as cross-town peer <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> have also initiated conversations with <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> funds in the region such as <keyword id="2756215" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jerusalem-Venture-Partners">Jerusalem Venture Partners</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="296842" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ray-Wang">Ray Wang</keyword>, founder and <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> of Constellation Research, said it makes sense for Infosys to tap into Israel now, given the new direction the company is attempting to move in under Sikka. 
 
"The goal is to tap into the most innovative tech regions. Just like organizations tap into the Silicon Valley, Israel is a hot spot for innovation," Wang told the ET. "There are a couple ways to do this. One, create a corporate venture group in a central location. Second, embed your team in the hot spots. Both work, it just depends how much scale you want."

it has a strong plan in place

<keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword> is an impressive man. From being the co-founder of India’s first successful company to now being a star icon for start-ups in the country, this man is unstoppable when it comes to working for a better India and a better world. 
 Business Insider recently caught up with the feisty 61-year-old to find out which area of <keyword id="15509" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Research">research</keyword> he finds exciting and where he is putting his bets as an investor. 
 This man has an interesting history. Kris left <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> in 2014, a place where he grew up as a person, professional, and as an entrepreneur. It wasn’t in haste. He was prepared for what lay ahead of him. “I made sure that I was busy when I left the company board. I decided to indulge into four interest areas; Education, Research, <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Innovation">Innovation</keyword> and <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</keyword>, everything that I always felt passionate about,” says Kris. 
Ask him now, and he feels that he has over committed. All the areas he has chosen require a lot of his attention, he feels. 
 Back in 2014 when he was ready to set out on his own journey, he identified one area which definitely needed his focus more because it would define our future and its <keyword id="1014249" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="brain-research">brain research</keyword> in the days to come. The same year, Pratiksha <keyword id="22629" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="trust">Trust</keyword> - the fund Kris set up with his wife - announced a grant of Rs 225 crore for a <keyword id="2038777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Centre-for-Brain-Research">Centre for Brain Research</keyword>, so it could be set up inside the <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> campus in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> without any delay. 
 He also initiated a <keyword id="63068" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="partnership">partnership</keyword> with the Centre for <keyword id="3720863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain-research-and-carnegie-melon-university">Brain Research and Carnegie Melon University</keyword>. 
Going strong in what he aims to achieve, Kris says he wants to “create a world-class institution in India for Brain Research” by first facilitating research and then commercializing it “to create products that have the potential to create real difference”. 
 
He signs off by saying - “There are two ways achieve what I have set out for; either you can collaborate with the best minds in the world in this field or you can make sure that the Indian capabilities get the best international exposure which they can implement back home.” 
This man is the right example for entrepreneurs looking to make it big.

EXCLUSIVE: Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan says Brain Research will be the next big thing

​The growing proficiency of Indian technology companies in building innovative products is drawing a great deal of attention from global corporations eager to acquire fresh ideas and skilled workers. 
 
Applications that help ease online payments, offer security for data stored on multiple devices as well as those that help drive greater advertising revenue on mobile devices are some of the technologies on the shopping list of multinationals scouting for the right startup. In the next five years, experts say at least 40 technology ventures in India could be bought over by large corporations. 
 “Couple of them (startups) will be valued at over $1 billion (Rs 6,200 crore),” said Ravi Gururaj, an angel investor who heads the software product council at industry lobby <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword>. He expects about half a dozen technology ventures to be valued at around $500 million (Rs 3,100 crore) while <keyword id="818790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-rest">the rest</keyword> will likely fetch a price of between $15 million (Rs 93 crore) and $50 million (Rs 311 crore). 
 A handful of such acquisitions has already set the ball rolling. Last November, Japanese engineering and electronics maker <keyword id="69870" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hitachi">Hitachi</keyword> acquired Prizm Payment Services, in a deal estimated at $250 million (Rs 1,547 crore). In mid 2013, South African media conglomerate Naspers bought online bus ticketing firm red-Bus for about $100 million (Rs 618 crore), giving it access to not only the large <keyword id="47445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword> but disruptive technology as well. 
 “Multinational companies primarily look for talent and <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="intellectual-property">intellectual property</keyword> that can compete at global level,” said Prashant Gupta, group manager at Microsoft India (R&amp;D). “There are early signs in India that such companies are emerging that can meet these demands, especially in cloud-driven application lifecycle and big data,” he said. 
 
The global software maker runs an accelerator programme in India for technology startups that has graduated 22 ventures so far and is poised to make its first venture investment this year. 
 Interest from <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>ese corporations too is growing. Apart from the Hitachi deal, others such as NTT too have been active buyers. In 2012 Japan’s <keyword id="913532" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NTT-Communications">NTT Communications</keyword> bought a majority stake in technology firm <keyword id="423557" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Netmagic">Netmagic</keyword> for about Rs 900 crore. “India is becoming the laboratory for products and services for the world,” said Krishnan Ganesh, <keyword id="36740" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="founder">founder</keyword> of online tutoring company TutorVista that was bought by the UK’s <keyword id="152222" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pearson">Pearson</keyword> group at an enterprise value of about Rs 1,000 crore. 
 
After the acquisition, the number of students using the services of TutorVista has tripled to four million across both the local and the US market. Pearson now aims to replicate the TutorVista model in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and South Africa. 
 
In 2013, there were 100 merger and acquisition deals across the India’s information technology industry. Of this, 31 whose value was announced were worth $1,906 million (Rs 11,807 crore), according to research firm Venture Intelligence. 
 The trigger for this growing M&amp;A activity is the range of disruptive technology startups emerging out of India. Companies such as advertising network InMobi, data analytics company Mu Sigma and online retailer <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> have achieved a scale where they are valued at over $1 billion. “This is driven by leading-edge globally competitive technologies,” said Naren Gupta cofounder and managing director of Nexus Venture Partners, an early investor in Netmagic and online retailer <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. 
 For instance, Pune-based <keyword id="741520" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Druva">Druva</keyword> provides data security and retrieval software to customers such as US space agency <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NASA">Nasa</keyword>, drug maker <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> and fashion brand <keyword id="5940" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Louis-Vuitton">Louis Vuitton</keyword>.

	&#xa0;</div> In Chennai, Perfint Healthcare has developed robots that treat cancer by precisely inserting a needle in the affected area to burn or freeze a patient’s tumour, leaving the good tissue alone. The founders, all former employees of <keyword id="166456" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE-Healthcare">GE Healthcare</keyword>, quit to launch the firm when they realised the demand for such a product. For global corporations acquiring such game-changing technologies can help them enter new markets and raise barriers against competition. 
 Two years ago, when global software maker <keyword id="183292" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Red-Hat">Red Hat</keyword> bought Bangalore-based <keyword id="6373689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cloud-computing">cloud computing</keyword> startup <keyword id="724826" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gluster">Gluster</keyword> for around Rs 667 crore, it acquired a storage platform technology which it offered to its customers for the first time. The cost of technology infrastructure to set up such ventures and scale them up for acquisitions has also come down drastically. 
 “A bunch of guys can now launch an application from a garage, keep the tablet or a mobile phone as the front end and the product becomes viral in few weeks,” said Anand Babu Periasamy, cofounder of Gluster. A computer <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> graduate from <keyword id="119675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="annamalai-university">Annamalai University</keyword>, Periasamy who now works at Red Hat is aiming to build Gluster into a billion dollar business unit. 
 
Experts hope small-size technology ventures in India will also attract the attention of larger firms. “Smaller exits are the life blood for healthy startup ecosystems like in <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> and US,” said Sharad Sharma co founder of software product think-tank iSpirt. Sharma is running an active M&amp;A Connect Program at iSpirt that is curating a list of several dozen companies. 
 Some of those on the radar are retail services software maker Capillary Technologies, healthcare applications provider <keyword id="1165142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword> and security software maker <keyword id="171228" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Quick-Heal">Quick Heal</keyword>. According to Sharma, many of them have shown healthy growth traction and are attractive for strategic partnerships. 
 Sharma of iSpirt is of the view that a larger proportion of bootstrapped companies is stymieing merger activity in India. “It is harder for large corporations when there is no validation from <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firms,” he said. 
 The other major problem say experts is that large Indian firms such as Infosys, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword> have shied away from making any such purchases, despite having huge cash reserves. Infosys has $4 billion (Rs 24,000 crore) cash reserves. 
 
“When Wipro can be in soaps and vegetable oil, why can’t they be in the Flipkarts of the world,” said Ganesh of TutorVista. “They are sitting on a huge cash reserve and not a fraction has been spent on startups. That mentality is not there.” 
 
“Over the next five years, I expect that quantity will dramatically improve and we can be optimistic about merger and acquisition activity out of India,” said Nasscom’s Gururaj.

Indian startups' global competitiveness and innovation make them acquisition targets

New Delhi, Jan 31 () IT services major Infosys on Friday said it is using latest technologies like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, voice and machine learning to deliver digital experience to tennis fans at the Australian Open.
 Infosys is the official digital innovation partner for the Australian Open.
 "Innovation is one of the hallmarks of the Australian Open, and alongside Infosys we are constantly striving to take tennis to a new level in terms of delivering insightful and engaging digital content," Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.
 Infosys' AI match highlights uses artificial intelligence to deliver highlights of tennis matches to fans within minutes of the match being completed. The 'Shot of the Day' uses machine learning to pick out the most exceptional piece of skill each day, traversing every shot played at each of the 17 courts where the action unfolds.

 IT services major Wipro on Friday announced a multi-year global strategic alliance with Smart Energy Water (SEW) to develop and deliver joint solutions that can accelerate digital transformation for enterprise clients in the utilities space globally.
 Headquartered in California, SEW is a global energy and water cloud platform provider serving over 200 utilities worldwide.
 "The Wipro-SEW partnership is key to our utilities marketplace as clients seek to provide enhanced experience for their customers and workforce. * Bayside Media raises pre-series A funding from Equanimity Ventures
 Bayside Media on Friday said it has raised an undisclosed amount in pre-series A funding from Equanimity Ventures Fund for its management training program, SEAL Professional. 
 The funds will be used to support program development and marketing, a statement said.
 SEAL Professional was set up in 2016 and over 4,000 people have gone through the course. Of these, more than 1,800 have been placed across companies including Flipkart, Aditya Birla, Zara, Calvin Klein and others.

 "Along with weight, the Dr Trust Bluetooth body scale gives a true picture of fitness levels by assessing an individual on 18 critical health parameters like body mass index (BMI), basal metabolism rate (BMR), body age, bone mass, visceral fat, muscle mass, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle and much more," said Saurabh Goyal, executive director of Nureca Pvt Ltd, which owns Dr Trust brand.

Infosys designs digital experience for Australian Open

New Delhi, Jan 28 () IT services firm Infosys on Tuesday said it has divested its shares in Unsilo A/S for about USD 8,00,000 (over Rs 5.70 crore).
"...the minority investment made by the company during 2016 in Unsilo A/S... the company announces that it has, on January 28, 2020, completed the divestment of its shares in Unsilo A/S for a total consideration of approximately USD 0.8 million," Infosys said in a regulatory filing.
In November 2016, Infosys had announced an investment of 14,920,000 Danish Krone (about Rs 14.49 crore) from its Innovation Fund in an artificial intelligence startup Unsilo.
The Danish firm focuses on advanced text analysis. It uses a unique combination of machine-learning and natural language processing to analyse large quantities of text and improve the speed and effectiveness of knowledge workers across many industries. SR BAL

The fund granted $36 million to set up a Centre for Brain Research at IISc. For 10 years, the Centre will get support from the IISc’s Centre for Neuroscience to also get a chance to collaborate with hospitals to study the functioning of the brain and find cures for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and schizophrenia. “I’m bullish about Brain Research as it is impertinent. Methods such as personalized medicine can have a significant impact in this field” says Gopalakrishnan. Kris Gopalakrishnan told Business Insider that he has been focusing on four sectors after leaving Infosys, “My areas of interests are Education, Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Research, not particularly in that order. I’m always working like most entrepreneurs,” says the zesty 62-year old.

From supporting 160 students through scholarships to creating policies with CII, Gopalakrishnan is a busy man uplifting people as he moves forward. From tea-shops to Kirana stores, every small business is adding the fuel to one of the world’s fastest growing economy. Gopalakrishnan also thinks that entrepreneurs should only be focused on serving more people, whether it comes to providing jobs or a service. “I expect to see more international innovation success stories from India in the next 30 years. This is just the beginning,” says the effervescent do-er in Gopalakrishnan.

Venture capital giant <keyword id="144381" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Accel-Partners">Accel Partners</keyword> and <keyword id="3267567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys-cofounder-Nandan-Nilekani">Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani</keyword> has funded the robotics firm <keyword id="3267189" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Systemantics">Systemantics</keyword>, which builds industrial robots for the manufacturing sector. The last time it had received funding was in 2013, when <keyword id="592779" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Blume-Ventures">Blume Ventures</keyword> had invested in the firm. 
 Systemantics was founded by IIT-Madras alumni <keyword id="3267568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jagannath-Raju">Jagannath Raju</keyword> in 1995. 
 
This is the seventh venture that Nilekani has backed. He has earlier invested in early-stage start-ups which he believes to be building highly impactful disruptive ideas. 
 In the past one year, Nilekani has backed Team Indus, Fortigo, Mubble, Juggernaut, Lets-Venture and <keyword id="1501494" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Power2sme">Power2SME</keyword>, while co-investing in a number of these ventures with Accel, including Fortigo and Power2SME. 
 Even though Systemantics likes to keep a low profile, it has quietly worked on custom robotics projects with the Government, as well as with tech giants like <keyword id="6359357" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Titan">Titan</keyword> and Hindustan Aeronautics (<keyword id="68124" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HAL">HAL</keyword>). 
 
"Systemantics is Make In India truly at work - with India's cost structure advantages and innovative design efficiency at full strength. This core belief drove our decision to back them. Their seasoned management team's executional ability, coupled with deep-tech IP, could eventually challenge global incumbents," Sanjay Nath, managing partner at Blume Ventures, told ET.
