<br /><ul><li><keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>’s top IT sector companies have reduced their headcount by 75,000 in the last one year.</li><li>New GCCs setting-up operations in India might have hired a similar number of <keyword id="19913553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech" source="keywords">tech</keyword> talent, say experts.</li><li>Even with renewed hiring, IT sector hiring as a whole suffered even as software product company hiring went down in the last 12 months.</li><li>In 2024, hiring intent in the IT sector increased only 3%, even as overall hiring intent is at 19%, says Taggd. <br /></li></ul>Headcount in the top IT services firms in India is down by 75,000 in the last one year. However, experts say that there is no large-scale furore over joblessness in the system due to the extensive hiring undertaken by global capability centers (GCCs). Many new GCCs are setting-up shop in India, which is giving a much-needed push to sluggish tech talent intake by IT services companies. <br /><br />Six out of eight IT bellwethers like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, LTI Mindtree, Cognizant and Tech Mahindra saw their headcount go down in the last 12 months, as per Xpheno, a staffing services company. HCL and LTTS however moderately added 2,400 and 1,600 people to their rolls. rollback of headcounts to a pre-two year level, in what is clearly a cycle of sustained adversities the IT services cohort is dealing with,” said Kamal <keyword id="20519296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="karanth" source="keywords">Karanth</keyword>, co-founder of Xpheno. <br /><br /><strong>GCCs: The bright spot <br /></strong><br />It’s not just IT services companies are cutting down hiring, job demand in software companies saw massive drop along with startups. But there is one bright spot in the tech market which is GCCs. <br /><br />“GCCs had recruited similar numbers (around 60,000) in the last one year, and that’s why we do not see a bloodbath on the streets. Around 100-110 GCCs set-up shop in India in the last two years, and 60 of them came in the last one year itself,” Karanth tells Business Insider India. <br /><br />GCCs are international companies which set-up shop in India, which takes care of activities like business support functions, back-office tasks, IT infrastructure and more. Since they kick-off operations, most of them hire anywhere between 500-2,000 people. <br /><br />GCCs have now become one of the six top sectors which hire tech talent that includes IT services companies, software product companies, startups, consulting firms and non-tech sectors which hire tech talent. GCCs, IT services and software product companies are the three sectors which hire techies in large numbers<br /><br />“Among the three, only GCCs will continue to hire in 2024, while IT services and software product companies will see at least two muted quarters ahead,” says Karanth. <br /><br />Going by their enthusiastic uptake of office spaces, they seem to be intent on hiring in large numbers. As per a Colliers report, office space uptake of around 30 mn square feet with large deals (of over 100,000 sq ft) have shown an impressive 24% annual growth in 2023. <br /><br />Almost 40% of the large deals in the top six cities have come from GCCs, particularly from technology and BFSI sectors. <br /><br />“More than half of the large GCC deals achieved closure in the last quarter of 2023, indicating renewed momentum in GCC activity in the country. Large pool of talent, cost-effective rentals, adequate Grade A developments and favorable office market ecosystem will continue to uphold India’s vantage positioning from a capability centre perspective,” said <keyword id="20454099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vimal-nadar" source="keywords">Vimal Nadar</keyword>, senior director and head of research, Colliers India.<br /><br /><strong>Tech hiring to remain sluggish <br /></strong><br />With only one of its sub-sectors keen on hiring, the IT sector’s recruitment outlook as a whole has come down. As per a report by Taggd, the IT sector’s hiring intent for 2024 increased by 3%. Info Edge which houses many internet-related businesses like <keyword id="20577913" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri" source="keywords">Naukri</keyword>, 99acres.com etc saw its revenues from the recruitment grow only by 3.1% year-on-year in Q3 FY24 due to sluggishness in IT sector hiring. <br /><br />“While the non-IT hiring sector remained robust, the continued slowdown in IT hiring impacted Naukri's growth,” Hitesh Oberoi, managing director and CEO of Info Edge said in the press release.<br /><br />Most large IT sector companies are only expected to do replacement hiring for the next few quarters, with a dull outlook for most. The sector’s sluggish hiring will impact engineering graduates the most as fresher hiring will be impacted. <br /><br />“As many as 9 lakh engineering graduates pass out every year. They will see a major impact and see the biggest hit,” Karanth adds.<br />

The company also announced that it would layoff 3500 employees as it sees revenues slowing further in 2023. The Nasdaq-listed company’s March quarter net profit grew 3% on year to $580 million. Meanwhile, its revenue declined 0.3% on year to $4.8 billion during the quarter. <br /><br />The company follows a January to December accounting year.<br /><br />Adding to the woes, Cognizant says full year guidance of 2023 is expected to be $19.2 - $19.6 billion, which would mean a decline of 1.2%.<br /><br />The next quarter revenue is expected to be at $4.83 - $4.88 billion, showing a decline of 0.6% to 1.6%, or a decline of 1.0% to flat in constant currency.<br /><br />Cognizant reported an operating margin of 14.6% for March quarter, which is lower than Indian IT giants TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra. <br /><br />For the full year 2023, the company has guided for adjusted operating margin to be in the range of 14.2%-14.7%.<br /><br />Following the peer IT major’s mixed bag of earnings which expects a decline in 2023 revenues, shares of most Indian IT companies were trading lower. will be laying off 3,500 employees and also reduce office space as part of the cost cutting measures.<br /><br />It attributed the move to its NextGen program through which it expects to simplify its and consolidating and realigning office space to reflect the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. <br /><br />Our drive for simplification will include operating with fewer layers in an effort to enhance agility and enable faster decision making,” the company said in a statement. <br /><br />Cognizant has a total headcount of 3.51 lakh in the March quarter, which is a decrease of 3,800 from the previous quarter. Its voluntary attrition rate declined to 23% in Q1 FY23 from 30% in Q1 FY22.<br /><br />"Our accelerated bookings growth in the quarter, which included several large deals and a healthy mix of new and expansion work, reflects the strengths of our services, our brand, and the longstanding relationships we have with our clients. Cognizant braces for slow year ahead, to cut 3,500 jobs and slash office spaces

The IT major’s attrition rate is worse in the industry compared to other Indian peers, even more than TCS’ attrition rate of 17.4% in the same quarter. <br /><div type="image" title="infosys attrition" height="900" width="1200" msid="90826018" hostid="261"></div>However, the management at Infosys said the attrition rate has come down on a quarterly basis as against the LTM (last twelve months) data disclosed. Moreover, it expects the attrition rate to decline gradually as it also kicks off hikes from April 1. <br /><br />“Attrition for the quarter has come down by close to 5% both in percentage and absolute headcount. So we talked that last quarter attrition had actually stabilised… of course the tail effect will continue to climb. Good news is we have seen stability and of course the intervention we are looking at like the April 1 hike plan, we should continue to see some improvement in them,” said Nilanjan Roy, chief financial officer at Infosys. <br /><br />Further, the company is looking to hire more than 50,000 employees in FY23 as against 85,000 it hired in FY22. Infosys has an employee base of 3.14 lakh, half of what TCS has. <br /><br />The company’s net profit for the March quarter rose about 12% to ₹5,686 crore with revenue growth of 22.7% year-on-year at ₹32,276 crore. Infosys is looking to hire 50,000 employees this year while expecting the attrition rate to come down

Revenue for the firm stood at ₹31,867 crore for the quarter. <br /><br />The IT firm continues to struggle with the highest number of employees leaving the organisation as its attrition rate stood at 25.5% with a total headcount of 2.92 lakh employees as of December 31, 2021. <br /><br />Rise in attrition leads to higher employee cost and narrower margins. This has been a problem for all technology companies in India in recent months. Infosys raises full year guidance after the best revenue growth in at least eight quarters

More employees are leaving Infosys, Tech Mahindra than TCS and Wipro

<ul><li>Nasdaq-listed IT firm <keyword id="28721" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cognizant" source="Orion">Cognizant</keyword> is going through a bad phase in terms of employees leaving the organisation.</li><li>The attrition rate of Cognizant is 33% much more than its Indian counterparts <keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword> with 11.9%, <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> with 20.1%.</li><li>The IT giant added a record number of employees to fill the gap.</li></ul>The Indian information technology (IT) industry is reeling with a very high number of employees leaving the firms as the demand for digital services rises and so does the talent serving it. <br /><br />US-based Cognizant in its September quarter saw 33% attrition rate, which is far more than its Indian counterparts Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with 11.9% and Infosys with 20.1%.<br />          <div type="image" title="cognizant attri" height="900" width="1200" msid="87327381" hostid="261"></div><br />As a result of the rising attrition rate, the company has brought in a number of employees onboard. It added 17,200 new employees in the September quarter taking the total headcount to 3.18 lakh.<br /><br />“While the industry faces an unprecedented competition for talent, we attracted a record number of employees to Cognizant, and stayed focused on delivering against our client commitments and our strategic repositioning,” said Brian Humphries, chief executive officer at Cognizant.<br /><br />The issue is not limited to a few <keyword id="6357647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it-companies" source="Orion">IT companies</keyword> but across the industry and to mitigate the number of employees leaving the firm, companies are deploying measures like broad-based hikes, promotions and retention incentives.<br /><br />Meanwhile, the company reported a double digit revenue growth of 12% to $4.7 billion in the third quarter (July-September), 2021. <br />    <div type="image" title="cog rev" height="900" width="1200" msid="87328900" hostid="261"></div><br />Further, the company has guided for $18.6 billion revenue in FY2021. Cognizant faces the worst attrition rate in the industry, hires record number of employees to fill the gap

<ul><li>While the demand for IT services companies remains robust with the evolving digital environment, high attrition rates remain a top concern for IT firms.</li><li><keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword>, <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword> will together hire 1.53 lakh employees in FY22 to hedge against employees leaving.</li><li>Wipro’s attrition rate remains highest at 20.5% followed by Infosys at 20.1% and TCS at 11.9%.</li></ul>While the demand for information technology (IT) services companies remains robust with the evolving digital environment, a huge number of employees leaving these organisations remain a top concern for IT firms. <br /><br />Attrition rate of IT companies has been rising consistently and in-line with growing demand for digital talent. <br /><br />With the earnings results available so far for the September quarter, Wipro has the highest attrition rate, among IT firms, at 20.5% followed by Infosys at 20.1% and <keyword id="6357585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-consultancy-services" source="Orion">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (TCS) at 11.9%.<br />      <div type="image" title="attrition chart" height="900" width="1200" msid="87013677" hostid="261"></div><br />However, a report by human resource solutions firm TeamLease shows that the average attrition rate in the IT industry was at 8.67% in September quarter, far less than what the big IT firms have reported.<br /><br />One of the key concerns of IT employees for leaving an organisation is muted growth in increments followed by poor employee benefits, rewards, digital skilling and so on, shows a ‘compensation benchmarking survey’ by Deloitte India and software firms’ lobby NASSCOM. <br /><br />The average increments for the technology services sector in India dropped from 9.5% in 2019 to 5.2% in 2020, which later increased to 8.8% in 2021 due to higher attrition rate. Having said that, our strong employer brand and our robust talent acquisition and talent development models will help us significantly overcome the supply side issues…We will continue to hire more and more and keep the supply ready since our model is robust. The attrition level is definitely concerning, but we can manage through that,” said Milind Lakkad, global head of human resources at TCS, in a press conference post earnings.<br /><br />High attrition rate in some of the largest IT companies in the country is expected to continue for the coming quarters and so is the huge hiring process. <br /><br />“In order to harness the full potential of the market opportunity, we are expanding our college graduates hiring program to close to 45,000 for the year. For IT giants wages, employee costs and campus placement drives make up for over half of its operational costs.<br /><br /><strong>‘We will honour all offers made — freshers and lateral hires’</strong><br /><br />Infosys however said that it will onboard all the campus hires. With this, it joins the likes of Accenture, Tata Consultancy Sevices (TCS) and other tech giants who will honour all the job offers made in the last financial year. A large number of companies have rescinded campus job offers forcing even IITs to hold a second placement drive in late July and August. <br /><br />“We are yet to onboard only a small percentage of campus hires we made offers to so far,” said Pravin Rao, COO at Infosys. The technology multinational made 18,000 job offers the last financial year. <br /><br />It said it will also onboard the lateral hires. “We will honour all the commitments made to campus hires — freshers as well as lateral. As far as onboarding timelines are concerned, we have already hired a few lateral employees, while in lockdown,” he said during its Q4 earnings call.<br /><br /><strong>Employee count decreases by over 1,000<br />      <div type="image" title="infy employees" msid="75253862" hostid="261"></div></strong><br />There has been a decrease in the employee headcount — by over 1,000. The employee count at Infosys stood at 243,454 during the third quarter ending in December 2019 — higher than 242,371 as of March 2020. “We should not read into the fall in employee count, it is not a secular trend,” Rao said. <br /><br />He did not hint any furloughs or layoffs, given the Coronavirus chaos. Going forward, Rao said that the company is planning to make more than 35,000 offers in FY21.<br /><br />“In the near term, there will be a demand-supply mismatch because we were already geared for high volume in the first quarter. We have to ensure that the utilisation rates go up,” said Nilanjan Roy, CFO at Infosys. <br /><br /><strong>Remote assessment for nearly 6,000 trainees</strong><br /><br />Infosys claims to have a strong digital footprint. The company said that all the 6,000 trainees will now continue their training remotely. “There are assessments, certifications and other online training to facilitate remote programmes,” Rao added.<br /><br />In fact, as much as 93% of the employees at Infosys are now working from home, thanks to the lockdown. The focus is on employee safety. “We will revisit as the situation evolves, keeping the safety of employees a priority. We will also take initiatives like temperature check etc,” the company said. Infosys has a new 'no regret' policy when it comes to employees

It plans to hire nearly 18,000 freshers during this financial year, according to reports.<br /><br />The technology major recruited 906 professionals during the first quarter. In the 2018-19, the IT giant hired around 8,000 employees — including 2,500 freshers. At present, Infosys has 229,000 employees across locations, ET <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/infosys-to-hire-18000-people-from-campuses-in-fy20/articleshow/70197777.cms?from=mdr">reported</a>.<br /><br />As on March 2019, Infosys added 228,123 employees, of which 214,727 were deployed in service delivery roles, the company’s annual report said. However, the company witnessed a rise in the attrition rate to 23.4%.<br /><br />The company offered over ₹10.2 million annual salary each to around 60 employees within the country. <br /><br />TCS also added 12,356 employees in the company during the first quarter of the financial year — its highest ever in the last five years.<br /><br /><strong>Global workforce expansion</strong><br /><br />As fewer of its employees are getting visas to work in the US, Infosys also recruited 10,000 American employees by the end of June quarter. The US accounts for<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/infosys-completes-localisation-target-for-us-hires-10-000-employees-119071400021_1.html"> 60% of the company’s overall revenue</a>. <br /><br />It is increasing headcount in the country after H1-B visa restrictions, Business Standard reported citing U B Pravin Rao, Chief Operating Officer.
