By the end of 2022, more than 650 million COVID infections had been reported to the <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword>. With the true number likely much higher, and the tally increasing by hundreds of thousands every week, the scientific community has been focused on understanding the impact of COVID on our physical health, mental health and brain function. In the early stage of the pandemic, sleep scientists charted the costs and benefits of lockdowns on sleep patterns. The main finding was that we slept more in lockdown but the quality of our sleep was worse. Now a second wave of data is beginning to explain how becoming infected with COVID is affecting our sleep and even intruding into our dreams. The most recent meta-analysis, a review of all the currently available scientific literature, estimates that 52% of people who contract COVID suffer from sleep disturbances during the infection. The most common type of sleep disturbance reported is insomnia. People with insomnia typically find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, and often wake up early in the mornings. Worryingly, sleep problems sometimes persist even after recovery from the infection. A study in China found that 26% of people who were admitted to hospital with COVID showed symptoms of insomnia two weeks after discharge. And a US study showed that people who had been infected with COVID were more likely than people who had never been infected to have trouble sleeping, even up to a month after a positive COVID test. Sleep difficulties and long COVID While most people recover from COVID quickly, some continue to have symptoms in the longer term. People suffering from long COVID seem very likely to face persistent sleep problems. A 2021 study surveyed more than 3,000 people with long COVID. Almost 80% of participants self-reported sleep problems, most commonly insomnia. A more recent study collected data on both sleep duration and quality using smart wristbands. Participants with long COVID slept less overall and got less deep sleep than participants who had never had COVID. Loss of deep sleep is particularly concerning, as this type of sleep reduces how tired we feel and strengthens concentration and memory. Lack of deep sleep may be partly responsible for the commonly reported "brain fog" during and after COVID. The fact COVID often interferes with sleep is also worrying because sleep helps our immune system to fight infections. Why does COVID affect our sleep? There are many reasons why a COVID infection might lead to poor sleep. One review identified physiological, psychological and environmental factors. COVID can have a direct impact on the brain, including the areas that control both wake and sleep states. We don't yet have a clear understanding of how this works, but possible mechanisms could include the virus infecting the central nervous system or affecting the brain's blood supply. Typical symptoms of COVID include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. These are also well known to disturb sleep. Poor mental health can lead to sleep problems and vice versa. There's a strong link between catching COVID and mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety. This can be caused by worries about recovery, loneliness or social isolation. Such anxieties may make sleeping harder. Meanwhile, hospitalised COVID patients can face additional difficulties trying to sleep in busy hospital environments where sleep is often disturbed by noise, treatment and other patients. What about dreams? The International COVID-19 Sleep Study, a global research project involving sleep scientists from 14 countries, recently released its findings into dreaming. The study surveyed infected and uninfected participants about their dreams. Both groups had more dreams after the start of the pandemic than before. Intriguingly, the infected participants had more nightmares than the uninfected participants, while there was no difference between the groups before the pandemic. There's no simple explanation for why catching COVID may increase nightmares, but mental health may again play a role. Poor mental health is often accompanied by nightmares. The International COVID-19 Sleep Study team found the infected group showed more symptoms of conditions such as anxiety and depression. Getting help The close links between sleep and both mental and physical health mean that prevention and treatment of disturbed sleep have never been more important, and will require creative solutions from governments and healthcare providers. If you've had trouble sleeping during or after COVID, or are having more bad dreams than you used to, you're not alone. Both short- and long-term insomnia can often be treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (<keyword id="207775" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cbt" source="Orion">CBT</keyword>) that you may be able to access through your doctor. For less severe sleep problems, the European Academy for Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia has compiled recommendations, some based on principles applied in CBT, that you can follow at home. How Covid can disturb your sleep and dreams and what could help

New Delhi, Jan 13 () Shares of Infosys on Monday jumped over 5 per cent after the company reported a 23.7 per cent rise in consolidated net profit for the December quarter.
 Infosys on Friday said its audit committee has found no evidence of financial impropriety or executive misconduct, virtually giving a clean chit to CEO Salil Parekh and CFO Nilanjan Roy who were accused by anonymous whistleblowers of rigging the company's balance sheet.
 The scrip climbed 5.32 per cent to Rs 777.55 on the BSE.
 On the NSE, it jumped 5.33 per cent to Rs 777.50.
 It was the top gainer on both Sensex and Nifty during morning trade.
 The country's second-largest IT services major, after market hours on Friday, reported a 23.7 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 4,466 crore for the December quarter, which the company executives called satisfactory.
 The company had posted a net profit of Rs 3,610 crore in the year-ago period, Infosys said in a BSE filing.
 Its revenue grew 7.9 per cent to Rs 23,092 crore in the quarter under review from Rs 21,400 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal, it added.
 The company has raised its revenue outlook for FY2019-20 in constant currency to 10-10.5 per cent, from its topline guidance of 9-10 per cent given in October.
 In October, Infosys had informed stock exchanges of having received anonymous whistleblower complaints alleging certain unethical practices by the top management. It then started a probe into the matter and roped in external investigators. SUM ANS

The buyback plan IT giants, Infosys and Wipro, whose buyback offers were open at the time of the budget, saw their stocks drop with the announcement of a 20% tax on the buyback of shares. Infosys and other IT giants — like TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra — have been using buybacks to payout shareholders because paying out dividends attracts a tax of 20.56%. For the past three years, these companies have been using a mix of both dividend payouts and share buybacks to distribute cash to their shareholders.

 Infosys announced a ₹8,260 buyback offer in January. Soon after, Wipro announced its buyback offer in April this year, which is the third of its kind in the past four years. Cumulatively in the past two years, Wipro has used buybacks to make 90% of its shareholder payouts. TCS, on the other hand, made 60% payouts using buybacks.

SBI rallies over 6% after strong earnings with analysts pegging it to be the first to recover among public sector banks

The Reserve Bank of India’s recently released ‘Payments Vision 2025’ is not only going to boost digital payments in India but make them a strong ecosystem too, the report added. The core theme of the vision document, released by the central bank of India last weekend, is based on four Es — e-payments for everyone, everywhere and everytime. “To promote innovation, the RBI aims to explore a UPI-like system for cards, enable networks for IOT-based payments and interoperability for contactless transit card payments in the offline mode, and create payment systems for merchants. With the new initiatives, the RBI expects to increase digital payment transactions by 3x,” Emkay noted. RBI’s decision to revisit the merchant discount rate (MDR) as well as the regulation to link credit card and credit components to UPI will have a role to play. “Linking credit cards to UPI is another game changer as would globalization of India's Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs)," Avinash Godkhindi, MD and CEO of global digital bank Zaggle, added. Emkay Research believes that a comprehensive review of MDR — a charge paid by merchants to payments companies to accept online payments — could lead to relatively higher charges on credit card and wallet payments. Reliance Life Sciences aims to obtain reliable information on safety, tolerability, how it reacts with living organisms (pharmacokinetics or PK) and mechanism of action of the drug. The company aims to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) with these trials. Business Insider has reached out to Reliance Life Sciences seeking more details about their vaccine and Phase-1 trials. A person aware of the development told the publication that Phase-1 of the trial usually lasts for 58 days to determine the highest dose that most patients can tolerate. New research adds to the growing body of evidence that <keyword id="693065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="delirium">delirium</keyword>, a state of acute <keyword id="3254444" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-confusion">mental confusion</keyword>, accompanied by a fever could be an early symptom of Covid-19. Delirium is an abrupt change in the brain that causes mental confusion and <keyword id="10225411" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="emotional-disruption">emotional disruption</keyword>. It makes it difficult to think, remember, sleep, pay attention, and more. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Immunology and Immunotherapy, highlights the fact that, together with the loss of the senses of taste and smell and headaches that occur in the days prior to the manifestation of coughing and breathing difficulties, some patients also develop delirium. "As such, the manifestation of this state of confusion, when accompanied by high fever, should be considered an early marker of the disease, particularly in the case of elderly patients," said study researcher Javier Correa from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Spain. "We need to be on the alert, particularly in an epidemiological situation like this, because an individual presenting certain signs of confusion may be an indication of infection," Correa added. For the results, the research team reviewed the body of scientific work published on the effects of Covid-19 in relation to the central nervous system, i.e. the brain. The review found that, although the first cases of pneumonia were reported in China focused on the damage it causes to the lungs and other organs, such as the kidneys and heart, there are growing indications that the coronavirus also affects the central nervous system and produces neurocognitive alterations, such as headaches and delirium, as well as psychotic episodes. "The main hypotheses which explain how the coronavirus affects the brain point to three possible causes: hypoxia or neuronal oxygen deficiency, inflammation of brain tissue due to cytokine storm and the fact that the virus has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier to directly invade the brain," commented Correa. He stressed that any one of these three factors has the potential to result in delirium and explained that evidence of hypoxia-related brain damage. It has been observed in autopsies carried out on patients who have died from the infection and that it has been possible to isolate the virus from the cerebral tissue. According to the researchers, delirium, cognitive deficits and behavioural anomalies are most likely to be the result of systemic inflammation of the organ and a state of hypoxia, "It also causes the neuronal tissue to become inflamed and cause damage in areas such as the hippocampus, which are associated with the cognitive dysfunctions and behavioural alterations presented by patients suffering delirium," the team explained. Last month, another study, published in the journal Age and Ageing, revealed that delirium is a key symptom of Covid-19 in frail, older people.
