<ul><li>Infosys announced that it will consider buyback of equity shares during its board meeting set to take place tomorrow, on April 14.</li><li>Analysts estimate that shares may be bought up at ₹1,600 to ₹1,650 a piece.</li><li>According to them, the buyback is not because the management feels that Infosys’ shares are undervalued but because it is as per the company’s payout policy.</li><li>Infosys has thus far given out around 50% in dividend as what is left over will be spent on this buyback.</li></ul>Indian information technology (IT) giant, Infosys, may announce a buyback of equity shares after its board meeting scheduled for April 14. This year they've given out around 50% in dividend. The rest of the amount, which comes up to around ₹11,500 to ₹12,500 crore, they will spend on this buyback,” explained Sanjiv Hota from Sharekhan.<br /><br />Apurv Prasad from HDFC Securities told Business Insider India that the Bengaluru-based tech services major may buy fewer shares this time around.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Why is Infosys buying back shares?" comment="subhead" text="Why is Infosys buying back shares?"><span data-til="noop">Why is Infosys buying back shares?</span></cmsannotation><br />A buyback is when a company purchases free floating shares in the market. Analysts estimate that Infosys will offer between 10% to 15% premium. <br /><br />Companies normally offer a buyback of shares to stem a fall in share prices, as many did after the pandemic rocked markets in March last year. <br /><br />However, since the government announced that dividends will be taxable as per the effective rates rates for corporate shareholders — more commonly known as promoters — in July 2020, some companies have opted for the buyback route to save tax.<br /><br />“Dividends are not the most efficient method of payouts for a certain set of investors because of the much higher slab rates,” explained Prasad. It’s common practice for leading companies to have a regular buyback strategy in place. “What happens is that if you don’t give the buyback, there’s a lot more cash which is not yielding high returns,” Prasad explained.<br /><br />Infosys is not alone in the balancing act of paying out dividends and offering buybacks. <ul><li>Infosys has announced that it will be buying back shares for a maximum of ₹1,750 apiece, which is a 25.2% premium over the prevailing share price in the market. </li><li>The IT giant also announced a dividend of ₹15 per equity share.</li><li>Companies buy back shares in the market, at a price higher than what is prevailing in the market, usually to signal confidence in the future prospects or to say that the shares are undervalued.</li></ul>Shareholders of Infosys, one of India’s top five information technology (IT) companies, have a reason to rejoice today, even as markets remain closed.<br /><br />The tech behemoth announced a buyback of equity shares worth ₹9,200 crore and will be doling out a dividend of ₹15 per equity share. However, this time around, it's not a tender buyback but an open market buyback. This means ₹1,750 is the ceiling price, but that the shares could be bought back for a lesser price. The quantum of shares that are bought back will be determined accordingly.<br /><br />That’s over $2 billion in buyback and dividend for its shareholders this quarter.<br /><br />Analysts had predicted that the shares would go for anywhere between a 10% to 15% premium and it seems Infosys landed on the higher end of the estimate. . The management expects the next 12 months to be even better. The annual growth guidance is for a 12-14% growth in revenue in dollar terms — without accounting for exchange rate fluctuations. Revenue grew a strong 4.5% in constant currency terms (adjusted for foreign exchange fluctuations). This would compare to Infosys’ 7% and Wipro’s 3% in the same period i.e. October to December 2021. <br /><br />The fall in operating margin to 25%, due to rising cost of hiring and retaining talent, was disappointing but it is not a concern, analysts at Morgan Stanley reportedly said.<br /><br />“TCS delivered strong growth numbers and the overall pipeline remains robust. <br />Infosys announced a ₹8,260 buyback offer in January. Soon after, Wipro announced its buyback offer in April this year, which is the third of its kind in the past four years.<br /><br />Cumulatively in the past two years, Wipro has used buybacks to make 90% of its shareholder payouts. <ul><li>The <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> share buyback offer is now open at a buyback price of ₹400 per share.<br /></li><li>The total size of the buyback plan is ₹9,500 crore, out of which 15% is reserved for small investors with up to ₹2 lakh holding in the company.<br /></li><li>Wipro’s share price has rallied by over 66% since July, and the buyback offer could be a good way to cash out those gains.<br /></li></ul>IT services giant Wipro announced a share buyback offer at a premium of 10% when compared to the share price on the date of announcement. Wipro has offered ₹400 per equity share under its ₹9,500 crore buyback plan.<br /><br />The Wirpo share buyback offer is open till January 11, 2021. Equity shareholders who held shares in the company on or before December 11, 2020 are eligible to participate in the buyback.<br /><br />Wipro’s share price as on December 11 was ₹353. But before you proceed, here’s what analysts are saying.<br /><br />“It depends on the market price during the buyback period - if the share price is below the buyback price, it might be worth considering,” said Deepak Shenoy, founder of Capital Mind, a Bengaluru-based research house.<br /><br />Wipro shares were trading at ₹386 as of 12 pm on December 29, up by 0.92%. Since the buyback offer is open till January 11, 2021, the share price could still see a lot of movement.<br /><br />This makes it important to wait towards the last few days of the buyback scheme to IDBI Capital, struck a different note. He said, “Existing shareholders should participate in the buyback and tender their shares. We believe the buyback price is at a premium compared to our existing fair price of ₹366,”.<br /><br />He further explained that a lot would also depend on the amount of participation in the buyback plan. According to the plan, 15% of the total buyback offer is reserved for retail investors with holdings of up to ₹2 lakh.<br /><br />If this segment sees over-participation, the buyback will be done proportionately, and not all shares tendered will be accepted.<br /><br />Wipro had undertaken buyback of equity shares worth ₹10,500 crore in 2019 as well.<br /><br /><strong>Wipro’s new CEO is driving the growth<br /></strong><br />Wipro appointed Thierry Delaporte as its new chief executive officer in July this year. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/wipro-ceo-delaportes-new-plan-could-allow-company-to-catch-up-to-to-tcs-infosys-hcl-tech-and-others/articleshow/79299467.cms">Analysts are betting</a> on the new CEO’s plans for the company.<br /><br />“Wipro is undertaking the drastic restructuring of its business, reducing the layers, and splitting the business by region.
