<ul><li>Tech brands have fared badly in 2023 due to global headwinds, recession threats and more.</li><li>Banking and financial services companies including fintechs saw their value swell during the year.</li><li>PhonePe and Cred were the new entrants into Kantar’s list of Top 75 Indian brands.</li><li>Auto companies made a comeback from Covid-lows with TVS and Mahindra being among the fastest risers. </li></ul>It is not just the share prices of technology services companies that are falling, even their brand value has taken a beating. India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. FMCG as a sector has seen its brand value remain stable during the year.

TCS retains No 1 spot as India’s top brand but tech sector takes a hit

According to a report by Interbrand, the brand value of the diversified Reliance Industries is at ₹65,320 crore and became the second most-valuable brand. Technology company Jio became the fifth most-valuable company at ₹49,027 crore. While the brand value of Reliance Industries grew at 121% in the last ten years, Jio is a new entrant to the list curated by Interbrand. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), however, retained the top spot as the most valuable brand in India, with a value of about ₹1.1 lakh crore. Infosys and HDFC occupied the third and fourth positions on the list. “This year’s Best Indian Brands event highlights the remarkable concentration of brand value among the top three and top five brands, demonstrating their strong impact on the overall landscape. The company is still confident that this too shall pass. “Underlying demand for JLR products remains strong and the company has proactively managed semiconductor supplies to maximise production of higher margin products,” Tata Motors said in an exchange filing. On a sequential basis, JLR is facing headwinds in both China and Europe, with sales down 6.9% and 6.8%, respectively. However, wholesale sales are chinning up with an increase of 8% in the same period. The easing of semiconductor shortage is visible in JLR’s output too. Production increased to 72,184 units, up 41% in the last three months. Its orderbook stood at 1,54,000 units, and the company’s cash flow was positive at £150 million (approx. ₹1,520 crore). CLSA, while stating that cash flow and profitability are expected to improve due to an increase in volumes, it maintained that the retail performance was ‘significantly’ lower. <table Attrition rate of IT companies has been rising consistently and in-line with growing demand for digital talent. India’s techies are leaving IT firms in hordes — Here’s why

<ul><li><keyword id="45224" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mahindra" source="Orion">Mahindra</keyword> &amp; Mahindra’s electric vehicle business is still in its nascent stages, but investors have valued it on par with <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword>’ EV biz.</li><li>While pure numbers may not be enough to justify the steep valuation of <keyword id="46869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mm" source="Orion">M&amp;M</keyword> EV biz, investors might be looking at the company’s future prospects.</li><li>While Tata Motors has sold nearly 100x more electric cars than Mahindra in the last year, two financial metrics are bogging it down.</li><li>We try to decode why investors are giving M&amp;M and Tata Motors’ EV businesses the same value, despite the massive differences.</li></ul>Mahindra &amp; Mahindra has raised fresh funds from British International Investment (BII), valuing its <keyword id="5713739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ev-business" source="Orion">EV business</keyword> at ₹70,000 crore or $9 billion — almost on par with Tata Motors’ EV business. Tata Motors’ EV business was valued at $9.1 billion after it raised $1 billion from TPG Rise Climate in October last year. The M&amp;M deal comes as a surprise to sector watchers – mostly because of an absolute data mismatch. Tata Motors has been beating M&amp;M in space – literally 100 to one. According to the latest FADA report, in FY22, M&amp;M sold a total of 156 electric cars in the passenger vehicles segment. On the other hand, Tata Motors, which has two models in the market, sold nearly 15,200 electric cars —that’s 100 times more than what M&amp;M sold. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The electric rickshaw" comment="subhead" text="The electric rickshaw">The electric rickshaw</cmsannotation> M&amp;M’s EV business however is not just about cars. It also has a few electric three-wheelers in its portfolio, at price points which are several times lower than electric cars. This is why analysts are bullish on its EV business, and label it as a ‘proactive’ auto company, in spite of a single electric car in its portfolio – the eVerito. This car is mostly used as a cab. “M&amp;M is also proactive on the electrification front and already has an electric 3W and e-rickshaw as well as PV (e-Verito) running on Indian roads. With a pipeline of interesting launches in the electric PV as well as LCV front, the company is steadily transforming amid change in technology landscape in the auto space,” stated a report by ICICI Direct. It sold a little over 8,000 electric three-wheelers in FY22, according to FADA – also this too is comfortably lower than Tata Motors’ EV sales. M&amp;M’s executive director Rajesh Jejurikar said the company’s SUV lineup will be 20-30% electric by 2027. Eight new electric vehicles are to be launched by 2027. Of these, four will be brand new cars and four will be ‘conversions’ of existing petrol and diesel cars. IDBI Capital too has impressed with M&amp;M’s three new ‘blockbuster’ launches – the new Thar, XUV 700 and Scorpio-N – stating that it has made a comeback. In the press release, he said that this investment will “attract additional sources of private capital” into Mahindra Electric. While he did not go into further details, he said that this venture is “exciting”. Green funds, and their large appetites, could also be one of the reasons behind the large investment into M&amp;M. “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The investment into Mahindra’s EV business is in line with our decarbonization strategy and focus of supporting sustainable business models that create new jobs, particularly for women,” said Samir Abhyankar, managing director of BII. M&amp;M is also a profitable company, while Tata Motors has reported losses in four out of the last five years, at over ₹64,000 crore. Moreover, the former’s stock has been outperforming the index too.
