<br /><ul><li>The ball is finally rolling to bring Wi-Fi into the Indian airspace after two years of deliberations. </li><li><keyword id="30351" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> has procured the “in-flight and maritime connectivity” (IFMC) license from Inmarsat, a British telecommunications satellite company that offers global mobile services.</li><li>India is, reportedly, the only country not in-flight connectivity within its airspace aside from North Korea.</li><li>The option to activate in-flight connectivity is expected to go live later this year.</li><li>The price for availing this service will be determined by the airlines.</li></ul>Airlines flying through the Indian airspace will now be able to offer their passengers Wi-Fi connectivity in the air thanks to India's new “in-flight and maritime connectivity” (IFMC) license. Just not immediately.<br /><br />India's state run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) procured the license from Inmarsat, a British telecommunications satellite company that offers global mobile services.<br /><br />BSNL first indicated that flight passengers will be able to use internet on flights <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Youll-be-able-to-use-internet-satellite-phones-on-flights-soon/articleshow/59697925.cms">within the year</a> in July 2017 after gaining the requisite approvals from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In May, last year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-just-allowed-in-flight-connectivity-within-its-airspace/articleshow/63927632.cms">said</a> that in-flight Wi-Fi would be live within the next 3 to 4 months. <br /><br />Even now, despite attaining the license, the actual implementation of the technology will take a few more months.<br /><br />

<br />Aside from India, North Korea is the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-at-30-000-feet-not-above-india-1481455658">only</a> country to not allow in-flight connectivity so far which the Indian government maintains was due to national security reasons.<br /><br />Once the service is available, it's unlikely to be cheap. TRAI also indicated that it would be the airlines that would set the prices for in-flight connectivity.<br /><br />Meanwhile, since India didn't have a license, companies like Airtel found workarounds. For instance, it <a href="https://www.techradar.com/news/airtel-joins-seamless-alliance-a-global-initiative-to-improve-in-flight-connectivity">founded</a> the 'Seamless Alliance' during the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) along with OneWeb, Airbus, Delta and Sprint to give flight passengers access to the internet.<br /><br />In the past, foreign players like Qatar Airways and Lufthansa — that already provide in-flight Wi-Fi when flying over other regions — have requested the same from the Indian government. Even local airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara have expressed the importance of having the option to provide onboard Wi-Fi.<br /><br />TRAI's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-just-allowed-in-flight-connectivity-within-its-airspace/articleshow/63927632.cms">recommendation</a> is that a separate category of licenses called 'in-flight connectivity providers' should be created. Aside from airplanes, ships would be eligible to apply as well. Indian flights will have WiFi soon — leaving only North Korea behind

	<span>State-owned national carrier <keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> may soon have mobile internet access on board for its international flights. The airline is in discussions with various global agencies which provide equipment for satellite broadband access. This facility is now available on other airlines such as <keyword id="52088" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="British-Airways">British Airways</keyword>, American Airlines, <keyword id="42740" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Emirates">Emirates</keyword> and <keyword id="71561" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lufthansa">Lufthansa</keyword>.</span>
<br /><br /> According to sources, the Airline's top officials met OnAir, the largest such agency in Geneva, this year, to discuss the options of installing on board <keyword id="107178" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="WiFi">Wifi</keyword> base stations on international flights. OnAir is a subsidiary of aviation technology provider (SITA). <br /><br />

	"It's just a matter of time we will have access of satellite broadband on board our international flights. We are in discussions with various agencies and have met officials of OnAir. We will take a decision on it in the coming few months,"said Anil Sondhi, executive director, materials management and information technology at Air India.
<br /><br />

	"As headphones started as a paid service on airlines, a few decades ago, but soon became free, so will Wifi access in the coming years," he added.

	Sondhi declined to confirm pricing of the service or the international routes on which the service will start. Air India has also met with officials of Thales, a French MNC which makes cockpit electronics.

	Ian Dawkins CEO of OnAir confirmed meetings with Air India officials. "Basic internet functions such as access of emails, social media messaging on Facebook or Twitter for the entire cabin and cockpit is possible with current technology. However seamless streaming of YouTube videos will take a few years to become a possibility," said Dawkins, who supplies his technology to airlines such as British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and Emirates. 
<br /><br /> However, domestic air-space in India will remain out of bound for Wifi access due to archaic rules of the aviation regulator. As per rules of <keyword id="6354705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Directorate-General-of-Civil-Aviation">Directorate General of Civil Aviation</keyword> (<keyword id="6354787" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="DGCA">DGCA</keyword>), use of any electronic device which transmit radio signals such as mobile phones or radio is prohibited on flights. <br /><br /> On the other hand several <keyword id="140941" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="International-airlines">international airlines</keyword> have already started offering the service free to passengers.<br />

The country’s <keyword id="158388" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Commission">Telecom Commission</keyword> has <a href="https://gadgets.ndtv.com/telecom/news/in-flight-wi-fi-calls-cleared-by-indias-telecom-commission-1845449" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">approved</a> recommendations made by the <keyword id="30356" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Regulatory-Authority-of-India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6356988" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai">TRAI</keyword>). TRAI had earlier recommended that voice calls, texts and WiFi be allowed on-board flights in India.<br /><br />Aruna Sundararajan, Telecom Secretary, stated, “Almost all recommendations by TRAI on this have been accepted. We are expediting the process and within 3-4 months, it should be ready. We will be operationalizing this decision immediately.”<br /><br />The only exceptions to TRAI’s original recommendation were that instead of foreign satellites and foreign gateways being permitted, an Indian satellite or a satellite that has been approved by the Department of Space would be allowed to operate in Indian airspace. <br /><br />The TRAI will have to create a separate category of licenses called ‘in-flight connectivity providers’. Aside from airplanes, ships would be eligible to apply as well. The token license fee would be Rs 1, applicable to anyone who wants to operate 3,000 meters above sea level.<br /><br />In addition to in-flight connectivity, the Telecom Commission has also approved proliferation of broadband through the public Wi-Fi network. a Telecom Ombudsman and 12 major recommendations on the ease of doing business by TRAI.<br />

<br /> Using Wi-Fi on an airplane was a distant dream and many aviation experts (from now a shut-down airlines in India) told us a few years ago, this will not be possible before 2020. However, the tech advancements came through early and most international flights are serving it on them. While Hong Kong airlines, <keyword id="212932" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="JetBlue">jetBlue</keyword> and Turkish airlines are giving free Wi-Fi aboard their air vessels, some like <keyword id="6368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Singapore-Airlines">Singapore airlines</keyword> are charging a bomb.<br />

None of the Indian flights are giving this service (paid or free). We do wish some of them start as that will make life a little more comfortable on these flights as well. In the meantime check what the international ones are giving and next time you are on them, you can purchase a pack for a decent amount. If you are a regular customer with some airlines then you might want to pick a monthly pack as that will be cheaper.<br />

New Delhi, Dec 27 () Vistara has partnered with Tata group company Nelco for inflight data services, which are expected to be rolled by the full service carrier shortly, according to a senior government official.
<p> Nearly five years after starting operations, Vistara -- a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines -- is also likely to be the first domestic carrier to provide inflight connectivity within India.
</p><p> Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash said required spectrum has been allocated for the purpose.
</p><p> "Vistara has tied up with Nelco and they have taken transponder space from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)...they had come to us for spectrum allocation which we have done. And they will be launching these services very shortly," he said.
</p><p> When contacted, a Vistara spokesperson said, "we have not finalised this yet," referring to launch of the services.
</p><p> An email sent to Nelco seeking comments did not elicit any immediate response  and the company's spokespersons were also unavailable.
</p><p> While airlines can offer both voice and data connectivity under the 'Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules-2018' notified by the government in December 2018, data connectivity is expected to be offered first, Prakash said.
</p><p> "There can also be voice but voice is not happening right now. Still data is as good as voice, because once you have data you can use Over-The-Top (OTT) and make WhatsApp calls," he noted.
</p><p> Regarding inflight wi-fi services, Prakash said the tariffs are not regulated by the government.
</p><p> "It is for them to decide what tariff they will charge. I suppose it will be an add-on service that the airlines will offer in relation to their competitors but whether they will charge or not charge, is their decision," the Telecom Secretary said.
</p><p> Telecom pricing is currently under forbearance, and "tariff is not an issue in this", he added.
</p><p> Vistara, in which Tata Sons has 51 per cent stake and the rest is with Singapore Airlines, began commercial services on January 9, 2015. With a fleet of 39 planes, the carrier operates more than 200 flights a day and is working on expanding its overseas presence.
</p><p>Last month, Nelco said it expects to roll out in-flight data connectivity services by January but did not divulge the airlines it would be partnering with for the offering.
</p><p> In March, the company obtained a license from the Department of Telecommunications for providing In-Flight and Maritime Connectivity (IFMC) services.
</p><p> "We are hoping to start inflight connectivity services around January timeframe. We will start with data services," Nelco Managing Director and CEO P J Nath had said recently.
</p><p> As per the terms and condition of the IFMC license, the services would be activated once the aircraft attains a minimum height of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace to avoid interference with terrestrial mobile networks.
</p><p> The IFMC license is granted against an annual fee of Re 1 for a period of 10 years and the permit holder has to pay licence fees and spectrum charges based on revenue earned from services.
</p> In September, Nelco launched its maritime communications services in the country, and said the offering would enable high-end support to those in sea by providing access to voice, data and video services while travelling on sailing vessels, cruise liners, ships in India, using satellite technology. Soon, you’ll be able to use Facebook, Instagram on flights

<br /> <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword> has launched an in-flight entertainment service that will allo wireless streaming of movies, TV programmes, music, interactive games and children's programmes. <br />

These will directly be streamed on to passengers' Wi-Fi enabled personal devices. These include smartphones, tablets and laptops on Jet flights. <br />

"Jet Airways has developed the new system in collaboration with Global Eagle Entertainment Inc," the airline said. <br />

"The streaming service will be introduced on the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft in the Jet Airways fleet starting from the second quarter of 2016. The airline further plans to upgrade from a streaming service to a full broadband satellite connectivity in the future, (subject to regulatory approvals), allowing guests to enjoy services such as internet surfing, e-mail, social media, connecting flight information, instant messaging, real time travel services and destination deals," it added. <br />

Jet Airways flights to offer
wireless music, movies and shows streaming

If your broadband connectivity faltered recently, the cause may be far above the Earth. On October 19, 2024, the <keyword id="23654638" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Intelsat-33e" source="keywords">Intelsat 33e</keyword> satellite experienced a catastrophic event in <keyword id="20509348" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="geostationary-orbit" source="keywords">geostationary orbit</keyword>, breaking into at least 20 pieces. This fragmentation was later confirmed to have generated over 57 pieces of <keyword id="20715750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-debris" source="keywords">space debris</keyword>. The satellite’s sudden disintegration impacted certain broadband and connectivity services in Asia, Europe and Africa.<br /><br />While the satellite wasn’t widely used for everyday home broadband, its services were vital for specific sectors. <keyword id="21479073" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intelsat" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Intelsat" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Intelsat">Intelsat</keyword> 33e was a critical part of Intelsat’s EpicNG network, delivering high-throughput broadband for inflight Wi-Fi, maritime connectivity, and business communications. It even supported broadband for airlines in India through a partnership with Tata's Nelco.<br /><br />However, the incident that occurred on October 19 resulted in a loss of power and service to Intelsat’s customers. In a statement released by the company, Intesat said that they were assessing their fleet’s capacity as well as working with third-party providers to mitigate service interruptions. Intelsat representatives were in direct communication with all affected customers, it further said.<br /><h2>What caused the satellite to break apart?<br /></h2>Instances of deliberate satellite destructions, accidental collisions and violent solar activity have all been documented in the past. But the exact cause of the satellite's breakup is still under investigation. <br /><br />Notably, Intelsat 33e, designed and manufactured by <keyword id="23663703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boeing-Space-Systems" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Boeing Space Systems" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Boeing Space Systems">Boeing Space Systems</keyword>, has had a history of propulsion problems. Soon after its launch in 2016, the satellite faced thruster issues, which reduced its operational lifespan. Such malfunctions may have contributed to the satellite’s structural failure over time.<br /><br />In fact, the Boeing-built EpicNG 702MP satellite bus has experienced failures in the past, including one in 2019. At the moment, it remains unclear whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger mechanical failure. Regardless of the root cause, the most pressing issue left by the incident is the generation of space debris, which presents risks for other operational satellites.<br /><h2>Growing pile of space junk<br /></h2>The breakup of Intelsat 33e adds to a growing concern: space debris. With over 57 pieces of the 6,600 kilogram satellite now floating in geostationary orbit, the risk to other satellites and space assets has increased. Space junk can cause significant damage to operational satellites by colliding with them at high speeds. Each collision generates even more debris, creating a dangerous cascade effect known as the Kessler syndrome, where space becomes increasingly congested and hazardous for future missions.<br /><br />While steps are being taken to track and mitigate space debris, incidents like this one highlight the growing urgency for better space traffic management and debris removal solutions. The idea is that Emirates can let travelers use the devices for as long as possible - instead of making them check them hours before a flight. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/electronics-ban-airlines-questions-dhs-tsa-us-laptop-2017-3" target="_blank"><br /></a><br>"Our aim is to ensure compliance with the new rules, while minimizing disruption to passenger flow and impact on customer experience," Emirates President Sir Tim Clark said in a statement. <span>"Our new complimentary service enables passengers, particularly those flying for business, to have the flexibility to use their devices until the last possible moment."<br><br>On Tuesday, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-government-laptop-ban-middle-east-airline-airport-tsa-dhs-2017-3" target="_blank">US Department of Homeland Security and the US Transportation Safety Administration</a> issued a ban on all electronics larger than a cellphone from being brought into the cabin of non-stop flights to the US from 10 airports in the Middle East and North Africa. It's disproportionately problematic for a carrier like Emirates which counts on business travellers for a significant portion of its revenue and to fill the hundreds of seats of its fleet of Airbus A380 superjumbos.<br> </br></br></br></span></br></p><p><span>At the same time, industry analysts have criticized the haphazard execution of the ban while safety experts have questioned of its ability to prevent a terrorist attack.</span></p><p><span>The service offers a partial fix. It also means means passengers flying through Dubai on their way to the US, from India for example, will be able to use the laptop during the first flight and while they're at the airport instead of having to check it from the start of the trip. It could also be a solution for business travelers whose employers don't allow them to check laptops out of fear they could be lost or stolen with company information on them. <br><br>Passengers will be required to declare their electronic devices to security agents prior to boarding US-bound flights. At which point, banned electronic devices will be packed into secure boxes and stored in the aircraft's cargo hold. The boxes will be returned to the travelers once they reach the US.</br></br></span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>According to Emirates, all carry-on bags will be thoroughly searched by security personnel prior to boarding non-stop flights to the US. </p><p>On board the flight, passengers will be able to access the internet on their phones through the airline's free wi-fi service.
