Seoul, Global fabrication capacity for 200-millimeter wafers is forecast to jump 14 per cent over the next three years, a report showed on Thursday, as demand for chips used in electric vehicles (EVs), in particular, is sharply rising.<br /><br />"The development of powertrain inverters and charging stations for EVs in particular is expected to fuel increases in global 200mm wafer capacity, as EV adoption continues to rise," according to the 200mm <keyword id="18943431" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fab-outlook" source="Orion">Fab Outlook</keyword> to 2026 report, published by SEMI, a global industry association representing some 3,000 electronics design and manufacturing companies worldwide.<br /><br />"The global <keyword id="581400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="semiconductor-industry" source="Orion">semiconductor industry</keyword>'s ramp to record 200mm fab capacity highlights the bullish expectations for growth in the automotive market in particular," SEMI President and CEO Ajit Manocha said.<br /><br />"While automotive chip supply has stabilised, the increased chip content in EVs and the drive to reduce charging time is spurring capacity expansions," he added, reports Yonhap news agency.<br /><br />SEMI said fab capacity for automotive and power <keyword id="145965" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="semiconductors" source="Orion">semiconductors</keyword> was likely to grow 34 percent by 2026, followed by microprocessor and microcontroller units at 21 percent and micro-electromechanical systems at 16 percent.<br /><br />Semiconductor manufacturers, like <keyword id="18943432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bosch-fuji-electric" source="Orion">Bosch, Fuji Electric</keyword>, <keyword id="176195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infineon" source="Orion">Infineon</keyword> and <keyword id="6427662" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mitsubishi" source="Orion">Mitsubishi</keyword>, are all ramping up their 200mm capacity projects to meet future demand, SEMI said.<br /><br />200mm wafers, also known as 8-inch wafers, were once seen as outdated compared to bigger wafers like 300mm. But the 200mm market rebounded in 2020, as demand surged for analog, display drivers and power management ICs chips, which are produced in 200mm fabs.<br />

200mm fab capacity to reach record high due to automobile chip boom

<br /><ul class="summary-list"><li>Chip startup Navitas has a plan to make data centers more sustainable.</li><li>Its cofounder and CEO, Gene Sheridan, says gallium-nitride chips can cut electricity use.</li><li>But insiders said defects, knowledge gaps, and supply-chain issues hinder the shift to the new chips.</li></ul><p>Silicon chips are widely used to power smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices. But more environmentally friendly chips are on the rise.</p><p>Gallium nitride, also known as GaN, is a chemical compound that combines a byproduct of aluminum called gallium with nitrogen. The chips can generate more power than silicon ones with the same amount of electricity in a much smaller form, according to Huili Grace Xing, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University who researches GaN chips.</p><p>And companies want in on GaN. Navitas, a $1 billion startup, is seeking to disrupt the global semiconductor industry with the tech, Gene Sheridan, its CEO, told Insider. After spending decades working with silicon chips, Sheridan started Navitas to capitalize on an emerging technology he says has a multibillion-dollar market potential. But he said it's been an uphill battle to convince electronics companies to replace silicon chips because of a lack of awareness and quality-control issues.</p><p>Navitas, based in California, says it has sent its designs to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, a semiconductor giant, to produce and ship more than 50 million GaN chips. The company, founded in 2014, raised more than $300 million before it went public in 2021.</p><p>Today, most of Navitas' GaN chips can be found in phone and laptop chargers made by companies like Samsung, LG, Lenovo, and Dell. But Sheridan says the company wants to make its GaN chip a top choice to prevent data-server meltdowns that lead to <a href="https://www.techradar.com/news/explosion-at-a-google-data-center-causes-major-outage">service disruptions</a> and <a href="https://uptimeinstitute.com/about-ui/press-releases/2022-outage-analysis-finds-downtime-costs-and-consequences-worsening">the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars</a>. Data centers using these chips to cool their infrastructures may be able to cut carbon emissions because GaN chips use less energy than silicon.</p><p>"I think we can actually accelerate the world's transition to more renewable energy," Sheridan said.</p><p>Sheridan said it took him and his cofounder, Dan Kinzer, decades of research and development to land on a design for its chip, which now has over 150 patents. Sheridan said integrated circuits gave Navitas chips a competitive edge over GaN chips produced by competitors like Infineon, Texas Instruments, and Nvidia.</p><p>The market-research firm P&amp;S Intelligence <a href="https://www.psmarketresearch.com/market-analysis/gallium-nitride-gan-semiconductor-devices-market?utm_source=ABN&amp;utm_medium=Referral&amp;utm_campaign=ABN_Paid">estimated</a> that, as technology companies seek new ways to reduce their carbon footprints, the $5 billion GaN chip market could grow to $26 billion by 2030. But Sheridan said that GaN chips are prone to defects and face supply-chain issues and that manufacturers must deal with knowledge gaps about the technology.</p><h2>Navitas approached the challenges by iterating on its product and educating its customers</h2><p>While experts say GaN has the power to revolutionize the electronics industry, the compound isn't new.</p><p>Academic researchers at universities in America and Japan began studying GaN in the 1990s. In 1993, the engineers Shuji Nakamura, Hiroshi Amano, and Isamu Akasaki used GaN to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-29518521">invent the blue LED</a>, which transformed the lighting industry and spurred the commercialization of the compound.</p><p>But GaN was still prone to defects, making its application unpopular among electronic companies. Navitas decided to take a stab at perfecting the chips, but its designers and engineers struggled to make them work.</p><p>Because GaN chips are made of dissimilar materials, the electric currents may not flow properly. If the voltage is too low, the chip won't turn on. But if the voltage is too high, it will blow a fuse.</p><p>"GaN is really fast and really efficient, which are great qualities, but extremely sensitive to how you turn them on and off," Sheridan said.</p><p>Navitas said the usability of the GaN chips had been a roadblock, as electronic companies aren't aware that the chips can work with their devices.</p><p>"The biggest challenge we had was an unawareness that high-speed components existed," Stephen Oliver, a corporate vice president of marketing and investor relations at Navitas, told Insider. "You can't drop a Ferrari engine into a Yugo chassis and expect the car to perform." Oliver said he often has to educate customers about GaN's usability.</p><p>Xing said that lack of awareness about the chips extends to academia. She said that while she tries to teach students about GaN, the coursework on electronic design at most schools, including hers, is overwhelmingly based on silicon.</p><p>"There's still a large knowledge gap in our curriculum in terms of our electronic design," Xing said. She added that Navitas often hires her students to research and build GaN chips because Cornell's engineering department works GaN into its curriculum.</p><h2>GaN chips are far from replacing silicon chips</h2><p>While GaN chips have promise, silicon chips are dominant. Sheridan said manufacturers are stuck in the old ways of silicon chips and supply-chain disruptions have limited their availability.</p><p>"Semiconductor shortages have been driving our customers crazy," Sheridan said.</p><p>He said that GaN chips must work with other chips and parts of the device to generate power, adding that companies are struggling to get these materials.</p><p>Oliver said that at chip giants like Intel, silicon is critical for handling low voltages in its graphics-processing units and memory chips.</p><p>And GaN chips are finicky — Xing said the GaN compound has a complex crystal structure that's difficult to maintain and can easily break if manufacturers don't properly deposit it on silicon wafer. The longer manufacturing process makes it more expensive.</p><p>Nonetheless, Navitas continues to grow. Earlier this month, it <a href="https://navitassemi.com/navitas-semiconductor-announces-second-quarter-2022-financial-results-and-acquisition-of-genesic-an-industry-leading-sic-company/">acquired</a> the semiconductor firm GeneSic, a producer of a hard compound that combines silicon and carbon, for an undisclosed price; the acquisition helped <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fool.com%2Finvesting%2F2022%2F08%2F16%2Fwhy-navitas-stock-popped-today%2F">boost its stock price</a>. It says it has also invested in research and development to design GaN chips for bigger systems.</p><p>Sheridan said next year the company plans to roll out GaN-based data-center supplies, followed by solar-powered GaN chips the year after that, then GaN-powered electric vehicles by 2025. Navitas also plans to apply for funding from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chips-act-bill-to-boost-us-chipmaking-competition-with-china-2022-7">the new US chips law</a> and is considering opening a manufacturing plant in the US.</p><p>"I think the world's going to need a lot more manufacturing capacity for GaN chips given how huge this is going to be," he said.</p>

Chip firm Navitas, worth $1 billion, is competing with industry leaders to replace silicon chips with more environmentally-friendly gallium-nitride ones.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Semiconductors are an increasingly important component of products from laptops to lightbulbs.</li><li>Surging demand and disrupted supply have led to a severe lack of chips for a variety of industries.</li><li>Industry leaders and analysts are forecasting at least another year of <keyword id="475892" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="shortages">shortages</keyword>.</li></ul><p>Semiconductor chips are in almost everything these days.</p><p>As Glenn O'Donnell, a vice president at Forrester Research, put it, "if it has a plug or a battery, it is probably <a href="https://go.forrester.com/blogs/the-global-chip-shortage-wont-ease-soon/">full of chips</a>."</p><p>The global <keyword id="10389950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="chip-shortage">chip shortage</keyword> that is jamming up auto manufacturers is rippling across nearly every industry that makes or uses tech-enabled products.</p><p>In particular, analysts say the boom in cloud computing and cryptocurrency mining, as well as the embedding of smart features in everything from doorbells to dishwashers, has led to a gold rush in the sector.</p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/auto-chip-crisis-is-threatening-recovery-from-the-pandemic-2021-5">Auto Chip Crisis Is Threatening Recovery From the Pandemic</a></em></p><p>But a combination of factors have pinched the supply as demand continues ramping up, leading to severe shortages that industry leaders and analysts say could drag out into 2023.</p><p>"<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/business-57105368">We are looking at couple of years</a>… before we get enough incremental capacity online to alleviate all aspects of the chip shortage," IBM President Jim Whitehurst told the BBC. His company licenses microprocessor technology to the world's leading chip makers.</p><p>Last week, Reinhard Ploss, CEO of German chipmaker Infineon, told CNBC his industry has never seen conditions like these, but that two years to normal seemed "too long."</p><p>Other firms have painted even rosier forecasts - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the largest chip maker, said it expects to catch up with auto industry demand next month, and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, told the BBC the shortage would wind down later this year.</p><p>Analysts, however, are skeptical.</p><p>"Because demand will remain high and supply will remain constrained, we expect this shortage to last through 2022 and into 2023," O'Donnell wrote on a Forrester blog. "We see nothing but boom times ahead for chip demand."</p><p>Plurimi Investment Managers CIO Patrick Armstrong told CNBC he expects another <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/12/the-global-chip-shortage-could-last-until-2023-.html?&amp;qsearchterm=chips%2020232023">18 months of shortfalls</a>.</p><p>"It's not just autos. It's phones. It's the internet of everything. There's so many goods now that have many more chips than they ever did in the past," he said. "They're all internet enabled."</p><p>New production is coming online, with a $20 billion spend from Intel and a $28 billion investment from TSMC, but that does little to solve the immediate challenge facing the market right now.</p><p>Nobody is literally <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-the-chaos-of-worsening-gas-shortages-across-the-country#some-drivers-have-turned-to-unique-storage-methods-as-they-stock-up-on-gas-5">filling trash bags or gas cans</a> with semiconductors, but Credit Suisse's director of global economies and strategy, Wenzhe Zhao, said last week that inventory hoarding along the production chain is making a tight supply situation even worse.</p><p>For now, Forrester's O'Donnell recommends tech buyers be patient, pay more, pick an alternative product or service, or make do with older tools until things return to normal.</p>

The chip shortage that's wreaking havoc on supplies of cars, computers, and more could last another 2 years, experts say

The positions are in addition to the fund's bearish bets on pharmaceutical company Bayer, semiconductor firm Infineon, automotive manufacturer Continental, and the industrial giant ThyssenKrupp.</p><p>The DAX Index is underperforming its broader European benchmark for the year, down about 17% versus a 13% drop in the Euro Stoxx 50. A whole host of factors has been hurting German companies lately <span>-</span> the US-China trade war has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-china-trade-war-ford-bmw-automakers-pain-2018-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">hammering German automakers</a>; Deutsche Bank has been <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/its-been-a-week-to-forget-for-deutsche-bank-2018-11">clobbered</a> week after week with terrible news; and uncertainty about the <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/merkel-cdu-leader-german-chancellor-2018-10">future of the German government</a> isn't helping. Marshall Wace reported a 1.46% short in Deutsche Bank, valued at about €245 million, and a 1.4% short in ThyssenKrupp at about €135 million. Hedge fund Merian Global Investors, formerly called Old Mutual, reported a 0.9% short in HeidelbergCement (about €95 million) and a 0.5% short in the stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse, about €105 million.</p><p>AQR's bet on Bayer comes as the German company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-bayer-gets-new-trial-on-punitive-damages-in-289-million-weed-killer-case-2018-10?r=UK&amp;IR=T">faces thousands of lawsuits</a> over a suspected cancer link to the Roundup weedkiller, made by Bayer's Monsanto unit.</p><p>"Our estimate is that AQR is up about €80 million on their Bayer short since mid October," Breakout Point said.</p><p>The decision by AQR and Marshall Wace to short Deutsche Bank is perhaps not a surprise. Technology, oil and gas and banks were among the biggest sector losers, with German semiconductor maker <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/infineon-stock">Infineon </a>down 1.5%, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/db-stock">Deutsche Bank</a> off 1.4%, while in London, oil producer <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bp-gb0007980591-stock">BP</a> lost 4.0%. Asian stocks also fell overnight, with Japan's <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/nikkei_225">Nikkei</a> down 1.1% and the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/shanghai_composite">Shanghai Composite</a> down 1.7%.</p><p>US futures were also pointing to a modest drop at the open between 0.1-0.6%, following on from Wednesday's steep declines. </p><p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell urged Congress on Wednesday to agree to inject more cash into the economy. "We've basically done all the things we could think of," he said, referring to the central bank's policy of keeping interest rates near zero and pumping cash into the financial system. </p><p>"The Federal Reserve Chairman and five regional presidents formed an impromptu choir overnight. All six were singing from the same song sheet, the <keyword id="3906221" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="fiscal-stimulus">fiscal stimulus</keyword> lament," Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst at OANDA said. "To financial markets though, the harmony was off-key, and the audience took fright, with stock markets being sold heavily."</p><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/us-dollar-index">The dollar </a>rose for a fifth day against a basket of <keyword id="97983" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="currencies">currencies</keyword>, making most headway against the so-called "commodities currencies", such as the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/aud-usd">Australian</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/usd-cad">Canadian dollars,</a> which were, in turn, under pressure from a slide in gold and silver, as well as industrial raw materials such as copper and oil.</p><p>Democrats and Republicans in the US have been gridlocked in stimulus talks since July. The news also dragged shares of a whole host of companies which manufacture components for Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad, many of whom rely on the California company for a significant proportion of their revenues. </span></p><p><strong>Here's a snapshot of the carnage as of around 10.30 a.m. GMT (5.30 a.m. ET):</strong></p><ul><li><strong>AMS, </strong>an Austrian firm which produces facial recognition sensors used in the iPhone X, has lost 17% and is the biggest faller on the Stoxx 600 index of major European companies.</li><li>The Switzerland headquartered<strong> STMicroelectronics, </strong>which builds imaging and proximity sensor products used in Apple's iPhone X, is 9.2% lower Thursday.</li><li><strong>Dialog Semiconductor, </strong>a UK-based semiconductor maker with an exclusive contract to make power management circuits for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch has seen its Frankfurt-listed shares fall 8%.</li><li><strong>Germany's Infineon Technologies, </strong>which makes chips for the iPad, has dropped around 4.8%.</li><li><strong>Logitech, </strong>the Swiss tech accessory maker has lost 4%. It supplies accessories sold in Apple retail stores including chargers, mice, and keyboards.</li><li>In the US, <strong>Advanced Micro Devices</strong>, a semiconductor company in California, slumped 3% in premarket trading. <span>So-called <strong>FAANG</strong> peers (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google) also slumped at least 1% each. <strong>Microsoft</strong> is down 2.1%. </span></li><li><span>Hong Kong-listed Apple suppliers <strong>AAC Technologies</strong> fell 5.4% and <strong>Sunny Optical</strong> plunged 6.8%</span></li></ul><p><span>Apple <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tim-cook-trump-tariffs-china-trade-war-apple-iphone-sales-2019-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">cited a slowdown in China </a>exacerbated by President Trump's trade war, the strong US dollar, and reduced battery replacement prices as reasons for its revenue slowdown. Tech earnings start: Here's a super-quick guide to what traders are talking about right now

<p>European stocks are bouncing for a second consecutive day on Thursday <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/janet-yellen-press-conference-september-2016-2016-9">after the US Federal Reserve left interest rates on hold on Wednesday, giving stocks a leg up.</a></p><p>In tandem with <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/bank-of-japan-september-monetary-policy-2016-9">the Bank of Japan's decision on Wednesday morning to leave its rates unchanged and tweak its existing stimulus,</a> the Fed's hold - and its signal of a possible hike in December - has helped to boost risk appetite in Europe's markets during early trading, with all major bourses higher by more than 0.5%.</p><p>Once again, Italy's FTSE MIB is leading the way, higher by 1.27% at around 8:10 a.m. BST (3:10 a.m. ET) led higher by a continued rebound in banking stocks in the country. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/european-stock-markets-on-wednesday-september-13-2016-9">The MIB was Wednesday's largest gainer,</a> and looks set to be the biggest winner again on Thursday. European stocks are bouncing

<p>Tech stocks are slumping following disappointing earnings results from Apple last night. </p><p>About $66 billion was wiped off the market cap of the Cupertino, California, tech giant after it posted its quarterly earnings - prompting a drop in tech stocks across the globe. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-iphone-sales-q3-earnings-2015-7">Apple failed to meet investors' expectations for iPhones sales</a> - 47.5 million units sold versus an analyst forecast of 48.8 million. The smartphone is one of Apple's key revenue drivers, and its stock subsequently <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/apple-q3-earnings-2015-7">dropped 7% in after-hours trading</a>. </p><p>Apple is one of the most widely held stocks in the world.</p><p><a href="http://www.ft.com/fastft/363691/mo-money-mo-problems">The Financial Times points out the UK chip company ARM Holdings is down 3.8% today</a>, and the German Infineon Technologies is down 4.6%. ARM produces chips that almost all smartphones use. Apple is tanking tech stocks globally

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56216e329dd7cc1a008c28d7-2513-1885/gettyimages-461102418.jpg" alt="Intel CEO Brian Krzanich" data-mce-source="Ethan Miller/Getty Images" data-mce-caption="Intel CEO Brian Krzanich" /><p class="source"><span>Ethan Miller/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Intel CEO Brian Krzanich</p></div><p></p></div></div>Intel's doing everything it could to become a major partner of Apple's next iPhone manufacturing process, according to <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2015/10/16/intel-has-1000-people-working-on-chips-for-the-iphone/">a report by VentureBeat</a>.</p><p>The report says Intel now has 1,000 people dedicated to working on this project that would potentially make Intel one of the main modem suppliers for Apple's next iPhones.</p><p>Intel's also trying to become the fabrication partner that manufactures the iPhone's system-on-a-chip (SOC), a microchip that combines everything from the CPU and modem chips to memory and graphic circuits.</p><p>The potential deal seems to only cover the modem chips and SOC manufacturing, meaning Apple will continue to use its own A9 chips as the main CPU chip.</p><p><span>The report said Apple hasn't officially signed a deal yet, but they could "if Intel continues to hit its project milestones."</span></p><p>The rumored deal could be a significant game changer for Intel, a $150 billion chip giant that famously missed out on the shift to mobile. Last year alone, Intel lost more than $4 billion from its mobile business, prompting its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-ceo-were-not-ashamed-of-how-far-behind-we-are-in-mobile-2014-11">chairman Andy Bryant to say</a>, "This is the price you pay to get back in and we will get back in." A major partnership with Apple will signal Intel's first step into the mobile business.</p><p>"If true, this would be a huge deal on two vectors," Patrick Moorhead, president of Moor Insights and Strategy told us. "First, it would be the first time in many generations that Intel supplied the modem of the iPhone as Infineon (now Intel) did in the past. It would also signal the first time Intel would have taken on a high-volume fab customer. Intel has lower volume partners like Altera, but nothing like the volume an Apple SoC and modem would create."</p><p>A bigger mobile business could also potentially help Intel offset the losses it's seeing in a shrinking PC market. Historically, Intel has made most of its revenue by selling chips to personal computers, but the PC market's decline has caused Intel's PC business growth to stall as well. The CFO of Wall Street's nightmare stock is stepping down

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/555e57d8ecad04a07eba7225-2400" alt="Intel CEO Brian Krzanich" data-mce-source="Reuters/Beck Diefenbach"><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Beck Diefenbach</span></p><p class="caption">Intel CEO  Brian Krzanich</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Having <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobile-withdrawal-may-sink-microsoft-windows-10-continuum-2016-5">missed the boat on smartphones</a>, and with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pc-market-shrinking-five-years-straight-good-news-for-dell-hp-2017-1">PC industry in decline</a>, Intel needs to find a new place to sell the chips that are the bread and butter of its business.</p><p>On Monday, the company revealed its answer: cars.</p><p>Intel is spending a whopping $15.3 billion, the second largest acquisition ever in its 50-year history, to buy <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-acquisition-report-2017-3">self-driving car tech company Mobileye</a>.</p><p><span>If self-driving vehicles are going to be the future, as </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-10-million-self-driving-cars-will-be-on-the-road-by-2020-2015-5-6">Uber, Alphabet, and others believe they will be</a><span>, Intel wants to sell the bits that make it happen.</span></p><p><span>Just as PCs were once all adorned with the reassuring "Intel Inside" stickers, the chipmaker is betting that it can gain a similar foothold inside another product that sells tens of millions of units ever year.</span></p><p>"It's important now, because if you take a look at what you're doing, talking about car models in 2020, 2021, and so we need to get in there, we need to get this platform developers, brought to them, and have that confidence so that we can really influence the real start of autonomous driving in that time frame," Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said on CNBC following the announcement of the deal.</p><p>Intel has a history of buying up companies to plug holes in its business: From 1997 to 2002, Intel went on a rampage, buying up around 40 companies both during and after the dot-com bubble. Even later on, Intel signed mega-deals like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-finishes-77-billion-mcafee-buy-2011-2">2010's purchase of security company McAfee for $7.68 billion</a>.</p><p>The problem is that while Intel should be applauded for trying to move its business into new areas, the company has a lousy track record when it comes to acquisitions. That could be part of the reason why Intel stock is down almost 2% at the time of writing, below the market.</p><h2>A series of unfortunate events</h2><p>Intel's dotcom shopping spree was kind of a fiasco, with the company spending billions on companies like Wind River and Dialogic trying to break into the smartphone market. But Intel struggled to gain a foothold in the early market, and ended up taking a $600 million writeoff in its wireless business - and <a href="http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/2006/20060627corp.htm">ended up selling much of its mobile business to Marvell</a> for the same amount in 2006.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/573c8f11910584cc5e8c36d0-1314/img20160311213419.png" alt="John McAfee" data-mce-source="John McAfee"><p class="source"><span>John McAfee</span></p><p class="caption">McAfee founder and former presidential candidate John McAfee</p></img></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In 2010, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-infineon-intel-idUSTRE67Q3J820100830">Intel bought the wireless business unit from Infineon</a>, which manufactured processors in the first several iPhone models, for $1.4 billion, in a move that was supposed to finally give the company a major play in smartphones. Not long after, Apple switched to chips from competitor Qualcomm, raining on Intel's parade. It was only last year that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-could-power-over-50-of-apple-iphone-7s-and-add-15-billion-in-revenue-2016-7">reports held that Apple was turning to Intel for wireless modem hardware for new iPhones</a>.</p><p>And some of its acquisitions were just plain weird, like that McAfee acquisition, which never really seemed to fit into the company's core processor business. I<span>t basically cut the value of the company by nearly half over the course of six years, culminating that Intel<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-spins-off-mcafee-2016-9"> announced it was spinning off a majority stake of McAfee in a $4.2 billion deal</a>.</span></p><h2><span>The bull case</span></h2><p><span>On CNBC this morning, Krzanich made the argument that Mobileye will be different, saying that he needs to convince investors that Intel's play here is around the "visual data" that self-driving cars can collect. </span></p><p><span>"The next data revolution will be visual data. Those cars see the world. He says that he's going to repeat the playbook there of having leadership that reports directly to him, with CEO Ziv Aviram staying in command of Mobileye.</span></p><p><span>While Mobileye is certainly Intel's biggest investment in diversifying its business past the PC, it's not alone.
