<ul><li>This is another case of a marquee private bank in India falling from grace amidst rising bad loans. </li><li>IndusInd Bank slumped over 7% after UBS downgraded stock to ‘Sell’ </li><li>The global investment bank said the credit risks are higher than expectations.</li></ul> The shares of IndusInd Bank slipped by over 7% at one point on Thursday after global investment bank UBS downgraded its stock to ‘sell’ and said that the credit risks may be more than twice as high compared to the company’s guidance. “The downside risk to IndusInd Bank’s earnings exists as believe credit costs could be higher at 150 basis points as compared to the company’s guidance of 65 basis points in 2019-20,” UBS said in its report on June 12. Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indusind-bank-bad-loan-impact-from-ilfs-crisis/articleshow/69557477.cms">reported on May 31</a> that IndusInd Bank had made the same mistake as many other Indian banks trying to downplay the worst of its problems. What’s worse, according to UBS, there could be surprises. “Retail deposits, as a percentage of external liabilities for IndusInd is the lowest among banks in our coverage, at around 20%, which is a structural issue, in our view, and often manifests in credit quality surprises,” UBS said. Simply put, when compared to its peers, the bank has far fewer individual deposits to make up for any more loans that may turn sour in the days to come. The stock which is trading at a price close to its 52-week lows after the recent quarterly earnings showed that the bank’s net profit fell 62% to ₹3.6 billion. Moreover, the bank made a provision of ₹12.7 billion against its loan to the troubled infrastructure lender IL&amp;FS. A provision is the amount of money a bank sets aside to cover a loan which is unrecoverable. Not only did this amount come<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indusind-bank-bad-loan-impact-from-ilfs-crisis/articleshow/69557477.cms"> in too late</a>, but it also is not enough to cover its exposure to IL&amp;FS which turned insolvent last year. The bank had been changing goal posts of its extent of exposure almost every quarter since the crisis unfolded. “They should have told us (analysts) from day one about the provision, and not have guided lower numbers to us,” says Hemindra Hazari, an independent capital markets. The average depositor followed later. These small deposits, also called CASA (current account-savings account) ratio, are the cheapest source of funds for any bank to make money. There is no run on the bank anymore and so, this number has shown remarkable growth in the last three months. For every ₹10 that depositors had parked in the bank a year ago, there is now ₹15.2. "In the next3years, we continue to stay focused on doubling the deposit book and increasing the customer base to almost 3 times. And we also aim to improve our CASA ratio to 40% and double the cross-sell ratios," Kumar said during Yes Bank's fourth quarter earnings call. However, the street is suspicious of that number too. “If you ask, any customer would not be confident about putting their money in Yes Bank right now. This ARC would buy the bank’s bad loans at a discount, help it clear the balance sheets, and start growing from there. According to the bank’s chief executive, Prashant Kumar, Yes Bank was hoping to deposit nearly ₹50,000 crore of bad loans to the ARC. However, the RBI turned down that request in March <a href="https://www.livemint.com/industry/banking/rbi-rejects-yes-bank-s-proposal-to-set-up-arc-11615722649056.html">citing</a> a conflict of interest. “Once the stock climbed back up [last year], they [Yes Bank] told investors they would want to apply for a separate ARC and they were confident of getting permission from the RBI, where they would basically park all the bad assets. But that didn’t happen,” said Emkay Global. However, according to Kumar, the option of setting up an ARC is still on the table. "That option is still alive and we would be waiting for more clarification to come from regulator after the report of the expert committee which they have made would come out," he said. Meanwhile, experts believe that Yes Bank may go for another round of funding in the near future to try and shore up its provisions as the second wave of pandemic bears down. “Market discounts all the knowledge that is known as of today. Yes Bank shares are cheaper than what they were a year ago — and what could revive the investment, if at all

<ul><li>IndusInd Bank’s provision for losses from IL&amp;FS may be too little too late, according to an analyst. </li><li>The provision for bad loans in the latest quarter should have come at least eight months ago, says Hemindra Hazari. </li></ul> To start with, Mumbai-based IndusInd’s profits fell by 62% in the fourth quarter compared to ₹9.5 billion to ₹3.6 billion. Yet, investors and analysts are happy. Their rationale -- bad loan burden due to its defaulter IL&amp;FS -- was not as bad as expected. Between January and March 2019, the bank made a provision of ₹12.7 billion against its loan to the troubled infrastructure lender, which had failed to pay back what it owes to banks, precipitating a liquidity crisis. A provision is where a bank sets aside some of its money to cover a loan that it believes is unrecoverable. For this, banks have to typically dip into their coffers, a step that can hurt its profits. Half truths But there are some who believe that the amount that IndusInd provisioned for the bad loan to IL&amp;FS, might not cover the extent of the exposure it has to IL&amp;FS. And, that there is an element of truth that may be missing from their statement. For one, it became obvious in September 2018 that IL&amp;FS had turned insolvent, but the full impact of it was not conveyed to analysts in a transparent manner. Added to that, the loan that IndusInd gave IL&amp;Fs is also unsecured, which means there is no collateral that the borrower has offered, which could have helped recover it. IndusInd chose to soften the blow to its investors by making only 13.8% (of the loan) provisioning in the second quarter ending September. It also assured the analysts that it may eventually go up by a further 20-25%. But this quarter ending March 2019, irrespective of the ‘maximum’ guidance it gave, the provision has risen to 70%. “They should have told us (analysts) from day one about the provision, and not have guided lower numbers to us,” says Hemindra Hazari, an independent capital markets. Staggering bad news This higher provision, as per an analyst report by Hazari, should have been made at least eight months back, when it had become obvious that IL&amp;FS had turned a toxic loan for every bank involved. “As per RBI norms, an unsecured non-performing loan requires 20-25% provisioning in the first year and requires 100% provisioning by the 366th day of remaining an NPA (non-performing asset),” said Hazari. The bank has not responded to Business Insider’s queries on the issue. In the second quarter analyst call, the managing director of the bank Ramesh Sobti had assured them saying, “So the best case scenario of course is that we don’t even provide this and we write it back and that scenario is equally possible. The scenario is possible that you make have to make another maybe 20 to 25% of this provisioning higher than this, is possible, so both scenarios are possible is the judgment call at this point of time that this is prudential in terms of our exposure.” Credibility of banks Changing stance regularly when a norm is in place usually affects the credibility of the management. Added to that, the bank has had several run-ins with regulators for incorrectly classifying its income. The banking regulator had imposed a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/banking/finance/banking/rbi-imposes-rs-3-crore-penalty-on-indusind-bank/articleshow/62055391.cms">Rs 3 crore fine</a> on IndusInd Bank in 2017 for violating its regulations on non-performing loans and extension of non-fund based limits. And here, the bank isn’t alone. Earlier, Hazari had also called out <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-05-15/india-s-yes-bank-getting-a-director-from-rbi-signals-trouble?utm_medium=social&amp;cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-view&amp;utm_content=view&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=socialflow-organic">Yes Bank </a>and <a href="http://hemindrahazari.com/2017/12/13/wall-of-silence-sell-side-media-response-to-hdfc-banks-divergence/">HDFC Bank</a> both for inflating current profits using a tool called deferred tax asset--which will cause negative impact when it reverses in the following year. IndusInd Bank too had followed the same practice in its fourth quarter results. It is no secret that Indian banks are in trouble thanks to high profile defaults by Kingfisher Airlines head Vijay Mallya and diamantaire Nirav Modi, who have now fled the country. The grounding of Jet Airways and IL&amp;FS crisis is not helping no one. Yet, banks have chosen to provide a ‘feel good’ factor to investors, instead of giving forthright bad news. The <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/opinion/the-way-ahead-for-dealing-with-npas/article27198338.ece">total NPAs </a>for all scheduled commercial banks for the year 2017-18 stands at Rs 10.4 trillion. And, there is no way of underplaying this amount or an amount higher than this, or delay announcing bad loan news hoping for a better tomorrow. An Indian bank is still making the same mistake of hiding the worst and hoping for the best

The 30-share index was trading 444.17 points or 0.78 per cent higher at 57,191.31 in initial deals. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market, as they sold shares worth ₹3,361.28 crore on Monday, as per exchange data. Sensex jumps over 400 points in early trade; Nifty tests 17,000 — Tata Steel, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, Maruti, IndusInd Bank and SBI top gainers

Equity benchmark Sensex plummeted over 1,400 points in early trade on Monday, tracking losses in index-heavyweights HDFC twins, <keyword id="6653" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="6355199" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> as spiking COVID-19 cases in the country spooked investors amid negative cues from global markets. The 30-share BSE index was trading 1,427 points or 2.88 per cent lower at 48,164.32. Similarly, the broader <keyword id="372424" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Nifty">NSE Nifty</keyword> plunged 431.90 points or 2.91 per cent to 14,402.95. IndusInd Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, tanking around 8 per cent, followed by SBI, <keyword id="111876" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajaj-Finance">Bajaj Finance</keyword>, Bajaj Auto, Titan, ICICI Bank, <keyword id="85462" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajaj-FinServ">Bajaj Finserv</keyword> and Maruti. About 20 per cent subscribers face connectivity issues for over 50 per cent of their voice calls. The <keyword id="30356" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of-india" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="6356988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trai" source="Orion">TRAI</keyword>) had called a meeting with mobile phone operators on February 17 to discuss the quality of wireline and wireless services. The meeting will discuss how to improve the quality of <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> services. LocalCircles shared with TRAI the findings of its survey on 5G services, including that only 16 per cent of mobile subscribers, who had switched to 5G, have indicated an improvement in call connection and drop issues. TRAI said that 5G infrastructure will take time and will be 15-20 times by the end of 2023. Cements stocks like Shree Cements fell after a report indicated that cement companies have dropped plans to hike prices for the month of November. “Cement prices have seen some correction especially in eastern market and in western market there was a hike after Diwali, which has been reversed right now,” added Jain. The top five gainers on the Nifty 50 were all auto stocks after Morgan Stanley said that the chip shortage, which had stalled production for car makers around the world, may be easing finally. Aegis Health and P&amp;G Health hit a 52-week low today. Investors continued to dump shares of IndusInd Bank and Hindalco and both shares are now among the biggest losers on the Nifty 100 index in the last one month. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the billion dollar company that has a near monopoly in railway ticket bookings and catering, jumped 1.8% today. Reliance Industries makes for nearly a third of Nifty’s fall today ⁠— Tata Motors and Maruti beat the trend

Facing backlash from developers, <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> said on Monday that it will postpone enforcing a 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases of digital content from its Play Store from next January to next September. Under the new policy set to be adopted in late September, Google plans to take a 30 per cent commission on all digital content purchases by users from app developers. Like Apple, Google also collects a 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases. Apple last week announced it will reduce the standard commission on its App Store from 30 per cent to 15 per cent for app developers with yearly proceeds of less than $1 million from next year. According to market watchers, Google apparently postponed the policy as it faced strong backlash from South Korean developers, reports Yonhap news agency. While Google has taken a 30 per cent cut for all in-app purchases on the Play store through its billing system, some apps have circumvented the rule by using other systems, such as direct credit card payments. The National Tax Service earlier said it will consider various measures to impose taxes on Google's income from the fees and will closely monitor the tech giant's revenue in the domestic application market. Google has claimed in the past the policy change will not affect the majority of app developers, as nearly 97 percent of those that sell digital goods already use Play's billing system. It added that just 2 per cent of South Korean app developers would be affected by the policy change. Last week, a group of South Korean lawmakers called on Google to follow Apple's move to lower its commission for app market purchases amid concerns of local app developers over high fees. India's blue-chip indices see a dizzying rally this week⁠— these are the top ten gainers and what pumped them up

Mumbai, Mar 17 () Stock indices erased early gains to sink deeper into red on Tuesday as the global equity rout intensified amid the coronavirus-triggered recession fears. After opening on a positive note, the 30-share BSE Sensex traded modestly higher for a majority of the session, but succumbed to a sudden sell-off in the last hour of trade. It finally closed 810.98 points or 2.58 per cent lower at 30,579.09, after gyrating 1,653 points during the day. Likewise, the broader NSE Nifty slumped 230.35 points or 2.50 per cent to finish at 8,967.05. Nifty has ended below the key 9,000-level after March 2017. Global markets reeled after the Wall Street suffered its worst crash since the 'Black Monday' in October 1987, with the US Fed's emergency rate cut failing to lift investor sentiment amid the drumbeat of negative news surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Unabated foreign fund outflows and a weak rupee further weighed on domestic bourses, traders said. ICICI Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, tumbling 8.95 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank (8.89 per cent), Bajaj Finance (6.26 per cent), HDFC (4.74 per cent), Infosys (4.68 per cent) and Kotak Bank (4.53 per cent). On the other hand, HUL spurted 3.49 per cent, Hero MotoCorp 3.09 per cent, Asian Paints 3.05 per cent, PowerGrid 2.53 per cent and Maruti 2.12 per cent. According to traders, value-buying lifted benchmarks during the first half of the session, but the gains could not be sustained as markets succumbed to coronavirus-led fears of an impending recession. "After trading in the positive for the majority of the day, the indices turned red during the last hour of trading, with selling mainly seen in financials. European markets and Dow futures added to the negativity. "Covid-19 showed no signs of abatement and with central banks' monetary policy actions having limited impact, calls were out for more actions to contain the spread of the virus," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. BSE bankex, finance, telecom, teck, IT and realty indices gained up to 4.46 per cent, while FMCG ended in the green. Broader BSE midcap and smallcap indices ended up to 2.27 per cent lower. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Seoul ended in the red, while Hong Kong and Tokyo turned positive. Markets in Europe cracked up to 3 per cent in early trade. Meanwhile, the rupee was flat at 74.20 per US dollar (intra-day). Brent crude oil futures fell 1.06 per cent to USD 29.73 per barrel. The number of deaths around the world linked to the virus has topped 7,000, after Italy announced a new surge in fatalities, with over 1,75,000 infections recorded globally so far. No respite: Sensex collapses in fag-end selloff, Nifty ends below 9,000

MUMBAI: The markets are on a roll, with the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty making fresh life highs, led by gains in banks, auto and energy counters. 
 
The new life high for Sensex is 26,356.24; and that for Nifty is 7,865.85. 
 
The Nifty extended its winning streak for fifth consecutive session and hit an all-time high as FIIs continued to pump in dollars in Indian markets on expectations of pick-up in economy 
 
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, President, Destimoney Securities, is of the view that the market will continue to move upwards. 
 
“A lot of FIIs money is coming out of Russia into Indian markets through BRICS fund. Domestic investors are also entering the market and that is providing support,” said Bandyopadhyay. 
 
At 2:02 p.m.; the 50-share index was at 7,860.95, up 69.25 points or 0.89 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 7,865.85 and a low of 7,779.20 in trade today. 
 The S&amp;P <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> Sensex was at 26,340.82, up 237.59 points or 0.91 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 26,356.24 and a low of 26,075.28 in trade today. 
 
Sandeep Tandon of Quant Broking is of the view that market went through consolidation in the last three months. It is light at the moment and looks set for next leg of upmove. 
 
The CNX Midcap Index rallied 1.27 per cent and the CNX Smallcap Index surged 2.10 per cent. 
 
Among the sectoral indices, the CNX Bank Nifty was up 1.49 per cent, the CNX Auto Index gained 1.02 per cent, the CNX Energy Index rose 1.42 per cent. 
 
The CNX FMCG Index was down 0.75 per cent and the CNX IT Index slipped 0.51 per cent. 
 BPCL (up 5.25 per cent), <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> (up 3.11 per cent), <keyword id="45008" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Power">Tata Power</keyword> (up 3.04 per cent), BHEL (up 2.91 per cent) and Tata Motors (up 2.87 per cent) were among the major Nifty gainers. 
 
ITC (1.92 per cent), Infosys (1.01 per cent), HCL Tech (0.80 per cent), HDFC (0.70 per cent) and TCS (0.68 per cent) were among the index losers. 
 
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1090 gainers against 425 losers. 
 
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 625.18 crore and domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 135.75 crore on Thursday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
