"Pursuant to Regulation 30 of the <keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword> Listing Regulations, we would like to inform you that the Reserve Bank of India vide its letter dated February 5, 2024 has accorded its approval to HDFC Bank Limited ("applicant") for acquiring "aggregate holding" of up to 9.50% of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in IndusInd Bank Limited. The aforesaid RBI approval has been granted with reference to the application made by the applicant to the RBI," IndusInd Bank said in a stock exchange filing. The approval also stipulates that if the "aggregate holding" of HDFC Bank falls below 5%, prior approval of the RBI will be required to increase it to 5% or more of the paid-up share capital or voting rights. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The Federal Reserve will make its next interest rate decision at the end of July.</li><li>Some economists said the economy is ready for the Fed to cut interest rates.</li></ul>After years of high interest rates to combat soaring inflation, some economists think the time has finally come for the nation's central bank to give Americans financial relief by cutting those rates.Lower rates would allow Americans to take out cheaper loans, helping out businesses and consumers.Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said that when cuts do come, he expects them to "provide immediate relief" to small businesses, consumers, and lower- and middle-income households. Business owners may find it easier to take out bank loans and consumers who rely on credit cards could end up with cheaper borrowing costs.But those cuts may not be here just yet. At the end of July, the Federal Open Market Committee will announce its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-interest-rate-cuts-should-happen-in-july-not-september-2024-7">next decision on interest rates</a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch</a>, which estimates interest rate probabilities based on market trades, forecasts a 93% chance the Fed will hold rates steady — and Fed Chair Jerome Powell has emphasized that the Committee needs to feel confident inflation is cooling enough before the Fed starts to cut.It's a delicate balancing act between risking a recession and renewed price spikes. "If we loosen policy too late or too little, we could hurt economic activity," Powell <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv6n0oTJMRU">said</a> before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs on July 9. "If we loosen policy too much or too soon, then we could undermine the progress on inflation."But many long-time Fed watchers and macroeconomists think the war on inflation has been won, and it's time to cut.Zandi thinks the Fed has "achieved their objective of full employment and inflation at target."Claudia Sahm, founder of Sahm Consulting and former Fed economist, agrees. "Frankly, it's been time for a while," Sahm told Business Insider. "We have seen the US economy has been getting back on track, normalizing, rebalancing, all of the Fed's catchwords for some time now."The consumer price index, which measures inflation, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-june-prices-food-energy-fed-interest-rate-cuts-2024-7">rose 3.0%</a> year over year in June — a decrease from May's 3.3% reading — showing that inflation is inching toward the Fed's 2% target. Real US GDP has already been growing at a cooler rate. It increased 1.4% at an annualized rate in the first quarter of 2024 after a 3.4% increase in the fourth quarter of 2023. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-june-economic-data-2024-7">labor market</a> has seen the unemployment rate climb to above 4%, and job gains have cooled, though the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-going-on-with-economy-recession-unemployment-inflation-gdp-2024-5">US remains far from a recession</a>.As Powell has consistently said, cutting interest rates too early could end up hurting Americans if it requires the Fed to hike again at a later time. But keeping interest rates high for too long also has consequences — it's keeping <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-do-interest-rate-hikes-impact-housing-market-rent-mortgages-2024-3">housing costs high</a>, businesses are struggling to invest, and Americans are finding it more expensive to take out loans and different forms of credit.While economists who talked to BI described the current economy as good, they also noted that cutting interest rates could give Americans financial relief and help the economy thrive."Right now, the Federal Reserve with keeping interest rates high is putting pressure on the economy, is making it harder for consumers to buy," Sahm said. "They have to take out credit. It's making it harder for businesses to invest."<h2 id="fa2a601e-28f1-43b0-846d-f43eee7bd384">Why economists say it's time to cut interest rates</h2>For months, some Democratic lawmakers have been urging Powell to cut interest rates sooner rather than later to give Americans financial relief. Sen. Elizabeth Warren joined three of her Democratic colleagues in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-fed-cut-interest-rates-elizabeth-warren-powell-rent-2024-1">writing a letter</a> in January to Powell saying that "interest rates are still too high for many American families, who already cannot afford to pay rent or buy their first homes."Some economists have recently been pointing to similar concerns with the Fed keeping interest rates high. "We got inflation under control, but we could end up in a recession, or we could just end up in a much weaker economy than was necessary because it just waited too long," Sahm said.As Sahm pointed out, it would take time for reduced interest rates to "flow through to the economy.""You want to begin a process of taking the pressure off of the economy," Sahm said. "The best way to do this would be gradually."Waiting longer to start this gradual process of cuts could mean being up against unwelcome scenarios, such as the labor market taking "a turn for the worst," Sahm said. In that case, that could mean the Fed may have to make cuts more quickly.Brian Rose, senior US economist at UBS, told BI that if the Fed doesn't cut rates soon, there could be a "more serious slowdown in the labor market, undesirable rise in the unemployment rate, or more layoffs, and things like that.""The economy seems like it's already growing below trend, and if you leave rates at this level, which is quite restrictive, you can only expect the economy to slow further," Rose said.True to form, Powell has not given any indication as to when interest rate cuts might happen, but when they do, it could provide relief to businesses and consumers alike.Zandi said interest rates on credit cards and Buy Now, Pay Later rates could come down, along with a decline in auto lending rates and mortgage rates."Right now, we're at a 7% fixed mortgage rate, and that's just unaffordable for almost everyone," he said. "But if it gets closer to six, then I think that would make a big difference for people. And we see more home sales and transactions."Even Fed officials are pointing at recent economic data as proof relief will soon be warranted. IndusInd Bank's share price jumps over 2% after US investor plans to double its stake

The markdowns erased USD 23 billion in value from Tiger's giant holdings of startups around the globe, one of the people familiar with the firm said. Its private portfolio includes big bets on hundreds of companies including TikTok parent ByteDance and payments company <keyword id="944108" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="stripe" source="Orion">Stripe</keyword>. In the fourth quarter, Tiger's newest venture funds lost between 9 per cent and 25 per cent. While substantial, the markdowns -- including USD 9 billion in the second half of the year--highlight the lag in private markets compared with similar fast-growing public companies. Tech stocks fell sharply last year, yet large venture-capital investors have so far reported more modest declines, <keyword id="51124" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="wsj" source="Orion">WSJ</keyword> said. Managers generally say they hew to consistent valuation processes, regardless of market cycles, that involve independent assessments of companies' worth, according to WSJ. Some question if public markets are a valid benchmark, contrasting the volatility of public markets with the longer-term nature of their investments in private companies. Still, the lag in private-market valuations during a rout in technology stocks has drawn the attention of investors including Harvard University's endowment, whose chief suggested in his annual letter last fall that venture managers hadn't written down their private investments sufficiently. That could create a blind spot for investors deciding whether to invest in new funds managers are raising, WSJ said. The recent write-downs at Tiger changed some of its performance stats significantly since it began raising a new USD 5-billion venture fund last fall, according to WSJ. WSJ said when it initially sought investors for the fund, PIP 16, it reported that a USD 5 billion fund it raised in 2020, PIP 12, had generated a 22 per cent internal rate of return for investors--a well above-average figure--through June 30. That figure has fallen to 9 per cent, people familiar with the matter said. Similarly, PIP 11's internal rate of return has fallen to 13 per cent from 23 per cent over the same time frame. PIP 10's decreased to 35 per cent, from 39 per cent. Tiger subsequently shared updated performance metrics with prospective investors after taking additional losses in the third quarter, a person familiar with the matter said. Tiger regularly provides performance and portfolio data to existing and potential investors, the person said, regardless of the market backdrop, according to WSJ. All of Tiger's largest investments have taken a hit, according to people familiar with the firm. When it began fundraising last fall, the firm told investors that its stake in payment processor Stripe was worth USD 1.6 billion as of June 2022, WSJ said. Tiger Global writes down venture funds' bets by 33% in 2022, says Wall Street Journal

Scientists have unearthed the remains of a modern glacier near <keyword id="47638" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mars" source="Orion">Mars</keyword>' equator, raising the possibility that ice may still exist at shallow depths in the area. The possibility of ice on Mars could have significant implications for future human exploration on the Red Planet, but speaking at the 54th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference held in Texas, the scientists noted that its "a salt deposit" with "features of a glacier" and not ice. The surface feature identified as a "relict glacier" is one of many light-toned deposits (LTDs) found in the region. Typically, LTDs consist mainly of light-coloured sulphate salts, but this deposit also shows many of the features of a glacier, including crevasse fields and moraine bands. The glacier is estimated to be 6 kilometres long and up to 4 kilometres wide, with a surface elevation ranging from 1.3 to 1.7 kilometres. This discovery suggests that Mars' recent history may have been more watery than previously thought, which could have implications for understanding the planet's habitability. "What we've found is not ice, but a salt deposit with the detailed morphologic features of a glacier. What we think happened here is that salt formed on top of a glacier while preserving the shape of the ice below, down to details like crevasse fields and moraine bands," said lead author Dr. <keyword id="10079896" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pascal-lee" source="Orion">Pascal Lee</keyword>, a planetary scientist with the <keyword id="773870" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="seti-institute" source="Orion">SETI Institute</keyword> and the Mars Institute. The glacier's fine-scale features, its associated sulphate salts deposit, and the overlying volcanic materials are all very sparsely cratered by impacts and must be geologically young, likely Amazonian in age, the latest geologic period which includes modern Mars. "We've known about glacial activity on Mars at many locations, including near the equator in the more distant past. And we've known about recent glacial activity on Mars, but so far, only at higher latitudes. A relatively young relict glacier in this location tells us that Mars experienced surface ice in recent times, even near the equator, which is new," said <keyword id="3176" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lee" source="Orion">Lee</keyword>. It remains to be seen whether water ice might still be preserved underneath the light-toned deposit or if it has disappeared entirely. "Water ice is, at present, not stable at the very surface of Mars near the equator at these elevations. So, it's not surprising that we're not detecting any water ice at the surface. It is possible that all the glacier's water ice has sublimated away by now. But there's also a chance that some of it might still be protected at shallow depth under the sulphate salts," Lee noted.
