New Delhi, Feb 19 () Full service carrier <keyword id="2467342" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> plans to offer in-flight broadband service on certain international routes by March-end after <keyword id="8801436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="inducting-dreamliners">inducting Dreamliners</keyword> and Airbus 321 planes, a senior airline official said on Wednesday. A joint venture between Tatas and <keyword id="6368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines">Singapore Airlines</keyword>, Vistara has tied up with Tata group firm Nelco to offer in-flight connectivity service. Vistara would also be the first domestic carrier to provide in-flight braodband for fliers. Boeing 787 aircraft are known as Dreamliners. The airline would offer access to in-flight connectivity only on Dreamliners and Airbus 321 aircraft on international routes, Vistara Chief Strategy Officer Vinod Kannan told reporters here. The service would also be available for domestic customers when these planes are operated in the Indian airspace. Nelco has partnered with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to start the service. "We have ordered Dreamliners and A321 which will be delivered by February-end or March. We will start their commercial operations on international routes by March-end or April with in-flight service on board. "In the next two weeks, we will sit with Nelco and Panasonic to decide on the price," Kannan said. Vistara has ordered six Dreamliners and ten A321 planes. In-flight broadband service would be made available on all these aircraft. "We will get four Dreamliners and two A321 aircraft this year. By end of 2021, we will be offering in-flight connectivity in 10 aircraft," Kannan said. According to him, a decision on offering the service in domestic flights would also depend on routes where Dreamliners and A321 aircraft would fly. "We will initially look at offering broadband service. We have not decided on offering voice calls," Kannan said. Nelco MD and CEO P J Nath said the capability to provide both broadband and voice services would exist. It would depend on airline partners on the way they would like to package the services, he added. "We are delighted that Nelco is spearheading in providing the long awaited Aero in-flight connectivity services in the country. Vistara is first airline to sign up for this service," Nath said. Panasonic Avionics Corporation Vice President Tom Eskola said passengers would be able to access the service even at a height of 35,000 feet. "We currently cover 99.6 per cent of routes on which aircraft fly. We are also migrating our system to generation 3 from generation 1. Vistara will have access to our generation 3 system when they start operation which will offer high speed broadband service during flight as they get on ground," Eskola said.

In 2018, the airline had placed an order for 50 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. At the same time, it entered a deal to purchase six wide-body 787 <keyword id="1009063" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dreamliner-aircraft">Dreamliner aircraft</keyword> from Boeing. The airline has inducted its first wide-body aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, for long-haul international operations in March this year. Subsequently, the first Airbus A321neo aircraft intended for use on short to medium-haul international routes, within seven hours of flying time, was inducted in July. In an interaction with IANS, Vistara's Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan said that despite the Covid-19 induced economic disturbance, the airline is committed to all its orders placed in 2018. "We may make necessary adjustments to the delivery schedule, but we are committed to the overall order placed with Boeing and Airbus in 2018," he said. At present, the airline has a fleet of 34 Airbus A320s, six Boeing B737-800NG and one Boeing B787-9 Dreamliner and A321neo each. On the impact of Covid-19 on passenger traffic, Kannan said: "At present, demand for air travel is sluggish, especially with states imposing their respective travel restrictions or quarantine requirements." "The industry average of load factors continues to be in the range of 50 to 60 per cent. However, we believe that demand will return to the market in a graded manner." In July 2020, the domestic passenger traffic was 20.6 lakh, as against 118.6 lakh in July 2019, a Y-o-Y de-growth of 83 per cent. The domestic passenger traffic witnessed a sequential improvement of 4 per cent over 19.8 lakh in June 2020. Regarding the expected performance of different travel segments, he said: "We do believe that leisure travel will pick up but it will also depend on the various restrictions and regulations from the respective state governments." "25 per cent of our customer survey respondents (who expected to fly within the next six months) indicated that they would fly to visit their friends and relatives, while 35 per cent of the respondents expected to fly for business." Last month, Vistara conducted a survey of nearly 6,000 passengers which showed that business travel has emerged as the biggest reason for passengers to travel. As per the survey, 35 per cent of the respondents indicated that business-related trips have emerged as the biggest reason for them to travel. Currently, the Centre has permitted increasing the capacity to 45 per cent with effect from June 27, 2020, post the initial re-start of operations of the scheduled domestic flights, with effect from May 25,2020, to a limited extent. Vistara won't back out of contracts with Boeing and Airbus due to coronavirus impact

Vistara operated its first long-haul flight from Delhi to London on Friday using its newly inducted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, the airline said here. The full-service carrier is scheduled to operate special thrice-weekly flights from August 28 to October 24 between the two cities, it said in a statement. These special flights are being operated under a bilateral 'air bubble' pact signed between India and the UK amid the coronavirus-related travel restrictions. The flight on Friday departed from Delhi at 2.15 am and landed in London at 6.55 am (local time). Vistara said on August 18 that it was seeking necessary regulatory approvals to operate similar special flights to Paris in France and Frankfurt in Germany. The airline has a fleet of 43 aircraft, including 34 Airbus A320s, one Airbus A321neo, six Boeing 737-800NGs and two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. While it received its first Dreamliner aircraft in February, the second one was received earlier this month. Scheduled international passenger flights continue to remain suspended in India since March 23 due to the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic. However, special international flights have been operating under the Vande Bharat Mission and various bilateral air bubble pacts. Vistara operates its first long-haul flight from Delhi to London

The proposed new aluminium birds will be a mix of narrow and wide bodied from the two manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing, media reports said. Currently, <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>'s fleet is a mix of Boeing (777-200LR, 777-300ER and 787-800 Dreamliner) and Airbus (319, 320, 320Neo and 321) aircraft numbering 113 operating flights. It will be interesting to see how the Tata Group finances the fleet expansion. It is also said that Air India has asked its pilots if they want to get trained in <keyword id="14243855" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flying-a350" source="Orion">flying A350</keyword>, which means the airline plans to induct the same in its fleet for long haul flights. Tata Group to expand the fleet of Air India in two years

Mumbai, Jan 12 () Tata-SIA joint venture airline Vistara has started phasing out nine Boeing 737 planes, which it had leased after the grounding of Jet Airways, from this month amid induction of the latest batch of A320 neos in the fleet.
The airline is returning two of these nine leased B737 from January and the rest seven will be exited the fleet between 2022-23 as they are on long term lease, a Vistara spokesperson told .
The government has temporarily reallocated as many as many as 488 Jet Airways' slots to Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Vistara, GoAir and AirAsia India to fill the capacity gap in the wake of the airline ceasing operations mid-April last year.
A slot is a specific date and time at which an airline can arrive or depart at an airport.
"Two of our Boeing 737-800NG aircraft are exiting fleet this month as their lease tenure ends. The remaining seven have longer lease duration and most of them will exit fleet between 2022 and 2023," a Vistara spokesperson said in response to a query.
The spokesperson also said that by the time Vistara phases out all these leased Boeing planes, it would induct more than 50 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft in its fleet from Airbus and Boeing additionally.
After the government put a rider that temporary allocation of ex-Jet Airways slots was subject to aircraft induction, Vistara leased nine Boeing 737-800 planes to reportedly secure as many as 110 additional slots of the 488 slots.
Vistara, which is 51 per cent owned by the Tata Group and rest by Singapore Airlines, had placed orders for 50 aircraft, comprising both A320 Neos and A321 Neos for domestic as well as short and medium-haul international operations with deliveries between 2019-2023.
The airline has already taken deliveries of some of the A320 Neos from this order, starting last November.
Besides, the carrier has also bought six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for long-haul international operations.
Vistara will start inducting these wide-body planes in the fleet from next month.
The Delhi-based airline, which completed five years of operations on January 9, currently operates over 200 daily flights to 34 domestic and international destinations. IAS BAL

Vistara starts phasing out nine Boeing 737

<keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> is mulling expanding its <keyword id="6357957" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Boeing">Boeing</keyword> wide-body aircraft feet to implement its plans of adding a host of new destinations in its overseas network in a couple of years. 
 
The airline is expected to draw up a firm plan in this regard early next fiscal, highly-placed airline sources said. 
 As of now, the government-owned carrier has 40 wide-body or twin-aisle planes in its fleet -- 15 Boeing 777s, 21 B-787 (Dreamliners) and jumbo B-747, as against 68 <keyword id="6356166" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airbus">Airbus</keyword> single- aisle A-320 family aircraft. 
 
"We have not added too many wide-body planes in the fleet in the last couple of years, except the induction of Dreamliners from the 2005 order. We are now considering expanding this fleet as well by adding some long range Boeing aircraft going forward," the sources said. 
 
A final call on the issue, including the choice of aircraft - B-777s or Dreamliners -- is expected to be made early next financial year, they said. 
 
The new routes that are on India's radar include Washington DC and Houston among others in the US, Sweden and some destinations across Africa, sources said. 
 
Air India is expected to take deliveries of another nine wide-body planes by March 2018 which include six Dreamliners and three B777-300ERs. At the same time, it will induct another around 30 A-320s, includng A-320 neos, during the same period. 
 
"But this will not suffice as we will be adding a number of destinations a number of destinations in the international network and hence require a good number of aircraft to meet the purpose," they said. 
 As per estimates of global aircraft makers - Boeing and Airbus, <keyword id="1446" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="indian-airlines">Indian airlines</keyword> together are likely to order 1,740 and 1,600 planes respectively over the next 20 years. 
 
Of this, while Airbus forecast India will require 380 wide-body planes, Boeing has pegged the requirement at 280. 
 
Boeing's senior vice president for Asia-Pacific and and India sales Dinesh Keskar had during the India Aviation show here last week said that Indian aviation was frequency-driven and there was a market for 250-300 seater aircraft like the Dreamliners and B-777s. 
 
As part of its fleet expansion plan, the national carrier had in 2006 placed orders with Boeing for 68 aircraft -- 27 Dreamliners, 15 B777-300ERs, eight B777-200LRs and 18 B-737- 800s. The airline has so far taken delivery of 21 Dreamliners, 12 777-300ERs and all eight B777-200L Rs and 18 B-737-800s. 
 
However, the delivery of three B777-300ERs was postponed in the wake of the downturn in the global aviation sector in 2008 as there was no "cancellation" clause in the original purchase agreement with Boeing Company. 
 
But last September, Air India had decided to take the deferred delivery of these three planes, which are now expected to join the fleet between January-March next year.
