<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/576c295891058428008cb2de-1008/screen shot 2015-11-29 at 3.41.59 pm.png" alt="Amazon Prime Air" data-mce-source="Amazon" /><p class="source"><span>Amazon</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Amazon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/analysts-estimate-that-amazon-has-up-to-69-million-prime-subscribers-2016-6">introduced Prime in 2005</a>, letting customers pay $79 for a year-long two-day free shipping shopping spree.</p><p>It changed the entire industry.</p><p>Prime got people used to buying everyday items like <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Crest-Glamorous-Vibrant-Whitening-Toothpaste/dp/B009PIJLMQ/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1466709457&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=toothpaste">toothpaste</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Cocoa-Puffs-20-9-Ounce/dp/B00SMYLXZM/ref=sr_1_cc_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1466709477&amp;sr=1-1-catcorr&amp;keywords=coco+puff">Cocoa Puffs </a>off the internet, and it got people used to window shopping from the comfort of their bed, both of which now are all the norm for online shopping.</p><p>Amazon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/12-sneaky-ways-amazon-gets-you-to-spend-more-2016-6">brought together everything into one place</a>, which was convenient, but limited in its personal touch.</p><p>The online retailer giant was the impetus for that first wave of innovation, and it's also a big reason for the new look of e-commerce, according to Robert Peck of Sun Trust Robert Humphrey.</p><p>"We believe retail is at a tipping point," Peck said in a note to clients Thursday.</p><p>"E-Retailers are leveraging new capabilities in old business models to expand existing and new markets like apparel, grocery and personal care, where e-Commerce had only limited penetration till now." Peck calls it "E-commerce 2.0."</p><p>The biggest change in "E-commerce 2.0" is the number of players in the game, and the personalization they can provide.</p><p>Specialty retailers are populating the e-commerce ranks now. Companies like Warby Parker, Blue Apron, and the Honest Company are all examples of specialty online retailers pointed out by Peck.</p><p>It's really a wave that started when mom and pop stores were the dominant way to buy goods. Then, the big box retailers came to town, followed by their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-isnt-the-only-thing-killing-walmart-2016-2">online equivalents like Amazon</a>. Now, we are seeing customers shopping at specialty online stores, more similar to the small mom and pops America started with than the giant behemoths.</p><p>These changes are happening now because of a combination of several factors. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-stock-is-set-to-explode-this-year-2016-6">Ever cheaper cloud services</a> make it easier for smaller players to compete and enter the marketplace. Further, a shifting taste towards the boutique from a generation that grew up on the internet has also driven change, according to Peck.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/576c2f8991058423008cb2a7-960/2q==-2.jpg" alt="Indochino Suits" data-mce-source="Indochino Instagram" /><p class="source"><span>Indochino Instagram</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>A move away from big retailers also means lower prices. As the people producing the products are increasingly the ones putting them in boxes and sending them to consumers, price hikes brought by middlemen and brick and mortar stores vanish.</p><p>Indochino is a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/affordable-custom-suits-for-men-indochino-2016-6">great example of this phenomenon</a>. The company specializes in custom-made men's wear without the large price tags. They will gather measurements, customize colors and ship a suit to customers without them having to leave their house or speak to a human. The kicker is that they do it for less than traditional manufacturers, thanks to the power of the internet.</p><p>This revolution is not limited to e-commerce either. The digital revolution led to the rise of cord-cutters, which have sent the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wall-streets-way-to-value-tv-is-flawed-2016-6">television industry in a tailspin</a>. Netflix entered the market, letting people stream movies and TV shows from their home. Now, many cable networks are offering their own streaming services, and user generated content is growing ever more popular on sites like Twitch and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-stars-who-make-the-most-money-2015-10">YouTube</a>.</p><p>As new players enter the e-commerce arena, the available market expands to accommodate them, Peck said. New consumers are attracted to diverse options and spend more money, and existing markets are made more efficient by the introduction and innovation of technology. While I usually go with a longer inseam for jeans (in order to cuff them) I like a straight, uncuffed pant leg for slacks.</p><p>Since all the sizes are in stock and readily available as opposed to being made-to-order, I got my suit two days after placing the order. Fear of not knowing where to go to buy it, of not knowing what to buy, and of not knowing how to get it tailored.</p><p>I, myself, at the tender age of 25, just bought my first <em>real</em> suit. I put it off for years because of that same fear, and because I was able to get away with it in today's more casual environments. </p><p>But I couldn't get away with it any longer. It was time to grow up and face my fears.</p><p>To my surprise, there wasn't any pain in the process. Truly, the expedience of buying the garment - a navy blue number from Suitsupply - was probably one of the easiest larger purchases I've made.</p><p>Suiting startups like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-suitsupply-became-a-goto-for-american-guys-2016-9">Suitsupply</a>, Indochino, and countless others have brought to the masses the expertise and quality usually reserved for the pricier places, fully changing the suit-buying game. While on first glance this seems to be filled with gimmicks (do you really need to be offered a latte while you shop?), it actually completely changes the buying experience in subtle ways so that it's easier to look your best. </p><p>The biggest difference is that the salespeople actually know suits. It's all they do. This isn't the suit section of your local department store trying to move as much stodgy product as possible. This expertise will put your mind at ease.</p><p>Don't know your suit size? Don't stress - they can eyeball it for you, and have you try on two sizes for comparison. Don't know what kind of suit to buy? Explain where you'll be wearing it, and they'll put forth multiple options in a budget you give them. Don't know what kind of tailoring needs to be done? After you purchase the suit, they'll typically suggest some alterations that can be done in a few days (or while you wait) by in-house staff for a small fee.</p><p>It helps that the suits themselves are foolproof. There's no garment you could pull or stumble across that isn't modern and on-trend. The selection is carefully curated with an eye for what today's guys are wearing, in cuts and fits that will be most flattering on him.</p><p>Since I researched a bit online and in-store, I knew exactly what I wanted when it came time to purchase. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes, including sitting for extensive alterations. <p>"Style rules" exist for a reason. They inform and guide the current generation using techniques and styles that have worked in the past. However, business dress was a lot more conservative back then.</span></p><p>This is all well and good, but styles and societal priorities change. It started as a way for old money to separate itself from the nouveau riche&#xa0;in the 19th century.</p><p>Unfortunately, this idea stubbornly survives until the current day. It's time to forget about it. White can look great - whenever!</p><h2>RULE #2: Always match your belt with your shoes.</h2><div><div><iframe src="//instagram.com/p/mER3UumUAo/embed/" width="658" height="" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div></div><p>In more formal settings, it is a good idea to get as close to you can to matching the leathers of your belt and shoes. But in any other context, it's simply unneccasery.</p><p>It's suggests a level of exactness that's too particular, fussy even. And besides, no one is paying such close attention to the color of your leathers, anyway.</p><h2>RULE #3: Always wear socks with pants.</h2><div><div><iframe src="//instagram.com/p/3RxD-oBBNa/embed/" width="658" height="" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></div></div><p>The necessity of socks is greatly exaggerated. The sockless summer look has been around so long now that it's practically a staple in the spring issues men's fashion magazines.</p><p>Socks are no longer required, unless you're actually dressing up. The pockets and adornments on clothing are either useful or vestigial, but always derive from some sort of work or military purpose. Examples of that include shoulder epaulets and ticket pockets. We can now add belt loops to that list.</p><p>It's 2015 - belts are now a choice. What changed? The internet. It has changed the experience of shopping for men. There are no lines; there's no waiting. That's why, according to <a href="http://media.ibisworld.com/2015/02/23/ecommercedistruptors/">researcher IBISWorld</a>, menswear has seen more growth in e-commerce than any other category - about 16.7% annualized over the past five years. In suits you have brands like <a href="http://www.indochino.com/">Indochino</a> and <a href="http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/home">Suit Supply</a> in the $300-to-$900 range. But prices can go lower. Men who want a lower-priced suit ($200) but want to look better than a JoS. He grew up watching celebrities go in and out of the secret door in the Versace store in his hometown of Las Vegas and cut his teeth making selvage denim. After selling one jean company, he decided he wanted to do something bigger. Something that used technology to make it easier for men to dress.</p><p>"I like the age-old saying 'Keep it simple, stupid,'" Melwani told Business Insider. "A lot of people think it has to cost a lot of money to look great, but that's not true. The basics are all you need to set your wardrobe off on the right foot, whether that be a few pairs of tailored slacks, a great cotton blazer that works with everything, or a pair of desert boots."</p><p>"These things don't have to cost a fortune, and once you find the right fit, all it takes are simple, versatile, and essential pieces to dress smarter," he added.</p><p>Part of the reason they don't cost a fortune at Combat Gent is that Melwani vertically integrated his company - owning everything down to the sheep that provide wool for suits. He leveraged his family connections to get his fabric produced at the <a href="https://vimeo.com/143071105">same Italian mills that Versace used</a>.</p><p>Combat Gent went as far as making a video to introduce its customers to the owners of the mills making their suits. <p class="p1"><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">GOOGLE TO TRACK IN-STORE PURCHASES: </strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Google wants to know whether its search ads are driving in-store sales, so it's testing a campaign that will track how Internet users spend their money at bricks-and-mortar retailers. To do this, Google is partnering with data brokers, such as Acxiom and DataLogix, which will help the Internet giant match in-store customers with Internet users who are clicking on its search ads (thanks to the data brokers' access to loyalty program offline purchase-tracking). Facebook has been partnering with data brokers since 2012 to conduct the same type of tracking, but Google's campaign will be on a much larger scale. Retailers love using search ads because it allows them to target consumers who are already looking for something in particular. Google wants to show that those search ads are driving people to make purchases in stores, not just online. Once established, retailers will have a formal forum for discussing potential threats to credit card fraud and information security, as well as collaborate about how to prevent future attacks. Sellers can now take wholesale orders from merchants via Etsy, so that their products can be sold in stores. Etsy will take its standard 3.5% commission on all transactions. The online marketplace has become a popular sales channel for artists and craftsmen to sell directly to consumers, but now with the help of Etsy, they have the potential to see their products sold in thousands of retail stores.
