<ul><li>India’s largest airline InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) has much to gain if its peer Go First fails to land safely.</li><li>Cooler crude, more passengers taking to the skies, and the grounding of Go First have set the airline’s growth on a higher altitude.</li><li>IndiGo also expects a 15% growth in its revenue per available seat kilometre (RASK), a key metric for airlines, in FY24.</li></ul>India’s largest airline InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) has a lot to cheer if its peer Go First fails to land safely – with domestic and international market share up for grabs. If the troubles of the budget airline which has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/go-first-suspends-sale-of-tickets-till-may-15-dgca-asks-airline-to-process-refunds-for-passengers/articleshow/99982706.cms">filed</a> for insolvency compound, competition will ease in the low-cost segment giving IndiGo more control over air fares. IndiGo’s shares have surged by over 7% since May 2 when Go First announced that it had filed a voluntary insolvency petition with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). Despite the recent surge, IndiGo is flying light – literally and figuratively – with its valuations being attractive, according to brokerages. On the back of robust fleet utilization rates and the Indian aviation sector being on an upswing, IndiGo expects its revenue per available seat kilometre (RASK), a key metric for airlines, to grow at 15% in FY24. Now, new tailwinds like the grounding of Go First and the softening of crude oil prices are expected to give it a further boost. “The bias is positive towards airline stocks, predominantly IndiGo, for the next 9-12 months,” said a report by Motilal Oswal, adding that the airline is well positioned to improve its realisations and margins too. IndiGo’s dominance will play to its advantage, according to analysts, not only helping it boost its margins, but also increase its market share. “Go First accounted for 8% of domestic traffic and 5% of international traffic (among Indian carriers). If this capacity goes out of the system, industry-level load factor and pricing environment can improve substantially,” said a report by IIFL Securities. The company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/go-first-suspends-sale-of-tickets-till-may-15-dgca-asks-airline-to-process-refunds-for-passengers/articleshow/99982706.cms">voluntarily filed</a> for insolvency seeking interim relief from NCLT to stop lessors from possessing its fleet. IndiGo too was a customer of Pratt &amp; Whitney once. But, when its engine troubles surfaced in 2016, it signed on a competitor – another US-based engine manufacturer CFM, and escaped this fate. With a diverse and young fleet, the airline now boasts over 1,800 daily departures with more than 300 aircraft. Further, to cater to the growing demand, IndiGo is also looking to expand its fleet by 500 more aircraft, from Boeing and Airbus. All in all, IndiGo’s numero uno position in India, cooler crude, more passengers taking to the skies, and the fall of Go First all set the airline’s growth on a higher altitude. The skies are clearer for IndiGo stock to surge further as Go First’s troubles mount

Air India to get ready to go pilots from Go Airlines

The 15-year old airline owned by the Wadia Group, which also owns companies like Britannia and Bombay Dyeing, will use the money received from the share sale to repay its debt. This would be the third listed airline in India after Interglobe Aviation (which operates IndiGo) and SpiceJet (owned by former bureaucrat-turned-businessman Ajay Singh) if the IPO goes through. More than a tenth of that is the money owed to the state-owned Indian Oil Corporation for jet fuel already bought. That share was down to 7.8% at the end of March 2020. Passenger traffic was still less than half (45%) of what it was before the pandemic struck and about one in every flights were idling in April 2021, according to a report from the broking firm Centrum dated May 5. International crude oil prices are expected to rise and that would mean the cost of jet fuel will also rise, unlike the passenger traffic. And, the impact could get worse if the rupee loses value against the dollar. "Looking at the current climate of subdued demand, a depreciating rupee (impacting 65-70% of costs including fuel), rising ATF (aviation turbine fuel) prices and daily cash burn, we continue to have a negative stance on the aviation industry," a BOBCAPS report dated April 30 said. Keshav Lahoti, Equity Analyst, Angel Broking, said it is better to sell half the Indigo Paints stocks for profit booking, and hold back on the rest for any surprise movement. Just like Burger King and Mrs Bector's Food, the <keyword id="10263001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indigo-paints-ipo">Indigo Paints IPO</keyword> was a hit. The IPO of India's fifth-largest paint maker clocked in a massive response from investors on the last day of subscription — the issue was subscribed 117 times the offer value. Indigo Paints is also the most subscribed IPO of 2021 followed by Home First Finance which was subscribed only 27 times. “See what happens is that when an IPO happens there are hundreds listed companies in the market, but the full attention of the retail, public and even institutional public goes towards the IPO. In fact, that's why in the US people take those companies private. That way every year they take 10 companies private and eight of them come back after not five years even in one or two years. It is because there is this concept that an IPO is a good way,” said Arora If you want to profit from Indigo, wait! Kranthi Bathini, equity strategist at Mumbai-based WealthMills Securities, expects “some more profit booking in the next few days." According to Lahoti, the company has a strong business model, experienced management and has done a great job gaining the market share in the industry from the last few years. "But currently the stock is a bit over valued," he told Business Insider. According to both the analysts, it is not the "right time" to enter into the stocks at these valuations. It is better to wait for a correction if someone wants to take a position. "I can say if the stock corrects 20-30% more from here, then investors can start buying it. If you have it in your portfolio you book profit in half of the stock and half they should wait," Lahoti said. Angel Broking says Mrs Bector's stock is ‘reasonably’ valued now Mrs Bector's shares opened in the green today but investors' anxiety over the upcoming earnings pushed the stock back into the red soon after. According to Lahoti, the stock has corrected nearly 30% and is now available at a reasonable valuation. <ul><li><keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">Indigo</keyword> reported a <keyword id="45439" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-Loss">net loss</keyword> of ₹6.5 billion for the quarter ended September 2018 — its first quarterly loss since its initial public offering in late 2015. </li><li>The airline attributed its weak results to the rising costs of <keyword id="4869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fuel">fuel</keyword>, the depreciation of the rupee and an inability to increase fares owing to intense competition. </li><li>Indigo is looking to tap into more international routes, especially in Southeast Asia, and reduce fuel costs by operating lighter aircrafts n order to offset cost pressures at home. </li></ul>Indigo, India’s largest budget airline, just <a href="https://www.goindigo.in/content/dam/goindigo/investor-relations/Financial%20Results/2018-19/q2-jul-to-sep-2018/Unaudited-Financial-Results.pdf">reported</a> a net loss of ₹6.5 billion for the quarter ended September 2018 — its first quarterly loss since its <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/indigos-rs-3018-crore-ipo-three-times-oversubscribed/articleshow/49580179.cms">initial public offering</a> in late 2015. This came despite a 17% rise in revenue from operations to ₹61.9 billion as the airline added 35 new routes and recorded an increase in passenger traffic. Indigo laid the blame for its loss squarely on external issues ; the rising costs of fuel, the depreciation of the rupee and an inability to increase fares owing to intense competition. In fact, the airline said that high fuel costs were responsible for over half of the fall in its profitability. The fact that Indigo — which boasts <a href="https://www.goindigo.in/content/dam/goindigo/investor-relations/Financial%20Results/2018-19/q2-jul-to-sep-2018/Unaudited-Financial-Results.pdf">a 42% market share </a>and is routinely touted for its efficiency and low costs — is struggling is indicative of a sector-wide malaise, and does not bode well for the results of other airlines. India’s carriers have not had an easy year. Fuel costs, which are denominated in dollars and comprise nearly 40% of the operating costs of most airlines, have been accelerating amid a global supply crunch and the rupee’s freefall. Meanwhile, airlines have been unable to increase fares by a corresponding amount for fear of driving customers away. In a bid to keep costs in control, most airlines have stalled plans to buy new aircrafts and resorted to leasing them instead. The sector’s major casualties are Jet Airways, which is selling a stake in its loyalty programme to stay afloat, and Air India, which is pinning its hopes on a government bailout. The government has taken notice of the sector’s problems. In September, it was said to be planning <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-indian-government-is-planning-a-rescue-package-for-the-aviation-sector-as-the-losses-pile-up/articleshow/65681289.cms">a relief package</a> for the <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> industry. While this was meant to include a reduction in aviation fuel prices, it actually hiked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-continues-its-defense-of-the-rupee-by-hiking-import-duties-on-19-products/articleshow/65976347.cms">import duties on aviation turbine fuel</a>, in addition to other items, a month ago in order to defend the rupee. In order to hold onto its market share at home, Indigo has no option but to play the fare discounting game.
