<ul><li><keyword id="6354706" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">Indigo</keyword> plans to annihilate the pesky mosquitos that have added to the airline’s woes.</li><li>The crew will be given two mosquito-swatting bats per plane.</li><li>Indigo currently accounts for about 40% of the domestic market share.</li></ul> One of India’s most awarded airlines, <keyword id="124937" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo-Airlines">Indigo Airlines</keyword>, has been losing its sheen with numerous instances of staff misbehaving with customers, <a href="http://www.zeebiz.com/india/news-more-bad-news-for-indigo-here-is-what-happened-to-this-flight-45442">flight delays</a>, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/engine-glitches-again-hit-two-indigo-a320-neo-planes/articleshow/63960771.cms">engine glitches</a> and more. However, there is one issue they plan to address with full gusto and that’s to annihilate the pesky mosquitos that have added to the airline’s woes. For this, soon the Indigo crew will be wielding mosquito-swatting bats (yes, the ones that look like tennis rackets) to take care of the menace in planes. <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/indigo-deboards-doctor-after-he-complains-of-mosquitoes/articleshow/63695766.cms">Just last month</a>, a doctor was apparently forcibly removed from an Indigo flight at Lucknow when he raised a stink about the number of mosquitoes on the plane. According to <keyword id="779746" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saurabh-Rai">Saurabh Rai</keyword>, a cardiologist, when he raised the issue he was told mosquitoes are all over India, “so will you leave the country?” The airline, however, denied this and said Rai had used threatening language. Aviation minister <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="suresh-prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> took note of the incident and launched a probe, but what happened after that has not been shared with the public. Indigo currently accounts for about 40% of the domestic market share, and cannot afford to lose customers and its reputation on account of mosquitoes. An airline official who wished not to be named told the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/how-to-check-fb-or-call-while-flying-in-flight-internet-technology-explained/articleshow/64051350.cms">Economic Times</a> that, "There have been a number of passenger complaints. Our flights also get delayed. So, we have decided to use these [swatters]." From this month onwards, two battery-operated mosquito swatters will be on the flights. The cabin crew will be given precise instructions on when and how to use these devices. An IndiGo spokesperson said, “The electronic bats [swatters] will be used only in exceptional circumstances and not as a regular practice.” She also added that they have taken other measures, like spraying the cabins with approved insecticides before departure and placing mosquito repellent patches in aircraft.

IndiGo’s share price jumped by 2.66% after the announcement. Virgin Australia had filed for bankruptcy in April 2020 after its debts piled to $6.8 billion to over 12,000 creditors which includes employees. The company had requested the Australian government for financial aid, but its request was turned down, pushing its towards bankruptcy. The airline industry has been badly hit as the COVID-19 pandemic has grounded domestic and international planes. Due to the mounting losses, IndiGo had announced pay cuts for its employees. The company said that its senior employees would get a pay cut of upto 25% for 2020-21 and also rolled out a leave without pay plan. As per a Bloomberg report, Virgin Australia’s airline administrator Deloitte expects eight indicative offers, out of which, three will be shortlisted and asked to submit a binding offer. Over 50% of flights by India's biggest airline were delayed after staff called in sick to attend a rival airline's hiring fair, reports say

IndiGo, the low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, has announced the appointment of <keyword id="3368118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rohit-Philip">Rohit Philip</keyword>, former <keyword id="137254" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="United-Airlines">United Airlines</keyword> executive, as its new CFO with effect from July 18, 2016.

But, the seats will be assigned as per the availability. </li><li>The revised policy has been effective since 14 November and the seats will be charged according to flyer preferences, starting from ₹100 to ₹800. </li><li><keyword id="149609" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Civil-Aviation">Ministry of Civil Aviation</keyword> (MoCA) said that the charges will be reviewed under the pricing framework.</li></ul>The Indian government has said it will review the new charges for online check-ins announced by the country’s budget airlines IndiGo and Spicejet following social media complaints by several flyers.  Earlier, in case of web check -ins, the airlines charged extra only for certain seats such as the ones along the aisle, window-facing or the seats with additional legroom. The charges for lowest seats in IndiGo and Spicejet are ₹100 and ₹99, respectively. IndiGo <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/indigo-to-charge-for-web-check-in-of-all-seats#gs.npT1Cys">reportedly</a> said that the revised policy has been effective since 14 November and the seats will be charged according to the flyer preferences, starting from ₹100 to ₹800. According to the revised policy, a first row seat will be charged ₹800 extra, while a non-reclining seat next to the emergency exit will cost ₹600 more and a middle seat in the last row will cost an additional ₹100 if booked online. IndiGo said that the changes have been inline with the consumer preferences, for the advanced selection of seats. Indian government to review IndiGo, Spicejet policies to charge for web check-in after flyers protest

Indigo’s shares fall on reports of a clash between the airline’s owners

Air India Express is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run carrier Air India and it mostly services the Gulf nations and Singapore. On the other hand, IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest passenger airline with a market share of 39.5%, caters to eight international destinations, including Nepal, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and <keyword id="6354870" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Arab-Emirates">United Arab Emirates</keyword> (Dubai and Sharjah), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-largest-passenger-airline-is-about-to-add-24-international-destinations-to-its-arsenal/articleshow/64177892.cms">for now</a>. According to the report, a whopping 24 of this year’s top 30 cheapest international airlines are based in Asia or the Middle East with AirAsia X, Air India Express and Indonesia AirAsia forming the top three. The third edition of the report analysed over 1.5 million economy-class prices from 200 airlines, finding the best value airlines for travellers. The data scientist team analysed economy-class airfares displayed by Rome2rio during the first two months of this year, totalling some 1.5 million price points, to provide a snapshot of global pricing (in US$ per km). Based on this, Air India Express had an average cost of US$0.08 per km (0.6 miles) and IndiGo US$ 0.10 per km. India’s Jet Airways also made it to the list at 12th place, followed by Air India at 13th position. Other carriers that made it to the top ten were Etihad, Ryanair, Qantas, Wow Air and <keyword id="670879" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virgin-Australia">Virgin Australia</keyword>. When Kartik Madhav Bhat was rebuked and given a warning for his poor performance at India’s IndiGo airlines, he decided to make a hoax phone call to New Delhi's <keyword id="89772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indira-Gandhi-International-Airport">Indira Gandhi International Airport</keyword>'s (IGI) IndiGo Airlines complex claiming the presence of a bomb on a Mumbai-bound plane, on May 2. As expected, the airline staff took the call seriously and issued an alert, launching a thorough check of hand baggage, screening passengers and the cargo area of Mumbai-bound flights. The entire process took over two hours. After a nearly two-hour search, nothing amiss was found and the call declared a ‘hoax’. The police tracked down the subscriber of the mobile phone from which the call was placed and arrested the 23-year-old culprit today. They have also recovered the SIM he used to make the call in his possession and say he has confessed to the crime. A senior police officer told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/indigo-staffer-arrested-for-hoax-bomb-call-at-igi-airport/articleshow/64147798.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Times Of India</a>, “The call was placed from a number belonging to 23-year-old IndiGo staffer, resident of Pune. The accused confessed his involvement in the case and was found to be serving IndiGo Airlines as a customer service officer at the Pune airport.” “On sustained interrogation, the accused confessed that he had done this as an act of revenge as the airlines had given him a verbal notice to improve his performance in three months or face departmental action," the police added. According to <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/business/aviation/frustrated-indigo-employee-makes-hoax-bomb-call-to-teach-airline-lesson-arrested-5175927/" data-type="tilCustomLink">Sanjay Bhatia</a>, deputy commissioner of police at Delhi’s IGI Airport, Bhat was “depressed” and “frustrated” with his employer. Indigo has since suspended the employee, but not much more has been revealed because the matter is sensitive in nature.

For the pilots of <keyword id="120816" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="go-airlines" source="Orion">Go Airlines</keyword> (India) Ltd, it seems their employer is a "no go airline" and the race is on as to who will board the <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword>. Incidentally, Go Airlines' brand is Go First and for the pilots it seems to "get away first". "The pilots from Go Airlines are experienced and they are ready to fly. It will be a good catch for Air India," a senior pilot told IANS preferring anonymity. According to him, the hiring will be for Air India and not a common recruitment for Air India, Vistara and AirAsia. "Ultimately Vistara and AirAsia may be merged with Air India. So there is no point going there and coming back to Air India," the official added. According to reports, Air India has extended the walk-in interview at Gurugram for Airbus A320 pilots by a day owing to a large number of applicants from Go Airlines. The <keyword id="7629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wadia" source="Orion">Wadia</keyword> group's Go Airlines has filed for a voluntary insolvency petition with the National Company Law Tribunal (<keyword id="6355809" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nclt" source="Orion">NCLT</keyword>) and grounded its flights for some time. It is said <keyword id="124937" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indigo-airlines" source="Orion">Indigo Airlines</keyword> too is getting applications from Go Airlines pilots. Air India to get ready to go pilots from Go Airlines

<ul><li>IndiGo Airlines plans to expand its operations to 24 international destinations within the next 18 months.</li><li>Its current fleet of 163 aircraft essentially caters to domestic passengers - 42 domestic and 8 international flights.</li><li>It plans to increase its aircraft fleet to 200 by the end of the current fiscal year. </li></ul>IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest passenger airline with a market share of 39.5% as of March 2018, is planning to soar higher and wider by expanding its operations to 24 international destinations within the next 18 months. According to Economic Times, the company plans to include 18 short haul destinations in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and China, and six long-haul flights to cities in France, Germany, Belgium, the UK and <keyword id="103" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Switzerland">Switzerland</keyword>. For this, the airline may purchase additional dual-aisle aircraft. Its current fleet of 163 aircraft essentially caters to domestic passengers - 42 domestic and 8 international flights. However, it plans to increase its aircraft fleet to 200 by the end of the current fiscal year. The airline is slated to commence flights to Afghanistan, France, Germany, Iran, Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the UK between October 2018 and March 2019. And between March and October of 2019, it will offer flights to Belgium, Italy, Myanmar, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam and China. Currently, IndiGo flies to Nepal, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and <keyword id="6354870" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Arab-Emirates">United Arab Emirates</keyword> (<keyword id="6354539" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dubai">Dubai</keyword> and <keyword id="29435" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sharjah">Sharjah</keyword>). While IndiGo has not commented on this, a government official backed the claims. The move will apparently be part of its second phase of expansion. In an interview with ET earlier this month, IndiGo co-founder <keyword id="325253" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Bhatia">Rahul Bhatia</keyword> had said, “There are also plans to add medium and long-haul international flights and the details are still being worked out. At some point in the future, we may go in for wide-body aircraft for international long-haul flying, but nothing has been decided so far.”

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword>, which plans to start operations sometime this year, knows it will have to fight hard with existing carriers for a piece of the market. Actually, the battle with rivals has already begun, even before <keyword id="82750" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tony-Fernandes">Tony Fernandes</keyword>’s joint venture with the <keyword id="6360721" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tatas">Tatas</keyword> takes wing. The latest round is being fought in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with the incumbents strenuously objecting to the grant of an air operator’s permit to AirAsia India and complaining that the new entrant will disrupt industry “equilibrium”. 
 Gurgaon-based low-cost carrier <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword>, the country’s airline largest by <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword>, and the Federation of <keyword id="1446" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="indian-airlines">Indian Airlines</keyword> lobby group have both objected to AirAsia’s entry. The letters, reviewed by ET, were in response to a public notice from DGCA seeking objections and suggestions on granting the permit. A DGCA official told ET that the views would be taken into consideration and a decision arrived at “soon”.

IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh said the relaxation of foreign direct investment rules in September 2012 had not been aimed at helping set up new projects but was meant to act as a lifeline for loss-making airline companies laden with debt. 
 “IndiGo’s primary objection opposing the application of <keyword id="2069477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="AirAsia-India-Private-Ltd">AirAsia India Private Ltd</keyword> for grant of licence to operate a new greenfield scheduled airline in India is based on the grounds that it is not permitted under the foreign direct investment policy as enunciated by the government,” the letter said. “The reason and rationale of the policy was to provide the opportunity for existing airlines to access muchneeded capital, improve the viability through expanding route networks and skills from international airlines,” it added. Both representations are identical except for some changes. 
 <keyword id="43642" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="FIA">FIA</keyword>’s letter has been signed by the associate director of the lobby group, Ujjwal Dey. The association represents <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword>, GoAir, SpiceJet, IndiGo and <keyword id="6373962" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kingfisher-Airlines">Kingfisher Airlines</keyword>, the last of which hasn’t been flying since October 2012. 
 
The points have been raised before, Ghosh said in an SMS reply to queries. “IndiGo has not raised any new objections,” Ghosh said. “Subsequent to the objections filed by the FIA on behalf of Jet Airways, Jet Lite, SpiceJet and GoAir on February 11, IndiGo only sent a letter on February 17 to the DGCA in support of some of these objections.” It should be pointed out that IndiGo is the country’s only carrier that has consistently been making profit. As an unlisted company, it’s not obliged to make quarterly earnings announcements. 
 
FIA and IndiGo both said a new entrant is not in the “long-term interest of existing airlines and consumers of the country.” They add: “The new joint ventures would have the opportunity to unfairly compete with the existing airlines, with huge losses and starved of capital, and thereby ensure that the existing airlines become even more vulnerable which could result in their ultimate closure.” FIA said the service proposed by AirAsia would result in “wasteful duplication” and “diversion of traffic” from existing airlines. IndiGo said that under “no circumstances” was the aviation sector ready to “inherit a fresh airline”. 
 
IndiGo and FIA also said a damaging price war was likely to ensue, which would “only lead to cumulative losses”. But that should also be read in the context of AirAsia having stopped international operations to four Indian cities, which would indicate that the local carriers flying those routes have been competitive, as ET reported on February 15. 
 
According to the submissions of both IndiGo and FIA, the accumulated losses of existing airlines as of March 2013 have hit Rs 77,000 crore. A senior aviation ministry official said the objections weren’t a surprise. 
 “We had expected such comments from the airline industry, but we have been very clear that the <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> policy is for both greenfield and brownfield airlines,” said the person, who didn’t want to be named. “However, the final call remains with the DGCA.” 
 It’s pertinent to note that Subramanian Swamy’s petition against AirAsia’s application is coming up for hearing in the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Friday. FIA’s petition has been tagged along with that of Swamy. IndiGo had previously welcomed the prospect of competition.

The three companies are expected to post record profits in the year ending March 2020, according to a latest report, despite falling passenger traffic. The irony has been brought to life by the scorching airfares. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has estimated an annual profit of $400 million-500 million for IndiGo alone-- that is more than the profits last year for all three airlines put together. Within 12 months, SpiceJet's domestic market share could approach 25%, CAPA reportedly said.
