The strength of the dollar and more stringent global financial conditions pose additional threats affecting capital flows and investor risk sentiments,” says Shanthi Vijetha, partner at Grant Thornton Bharat. November makes its mark with big deals In November 2023, 132 deals were sealed, amounting to $6.5 billion. This is the second best month of the year, after August. Thanks to big ticket deals, November’s deal value went up 143% on a month-on-month basis, even as volumes fell 21% from October. “This month set a record for the highest mergers and acquisition values in 2023, reaching a remarkable four-billion-dollar mark in a single month,” said Vijetha. The biggest deal of the month is Siemens AG increasing its stake in Siemens to 69% for $2.28 billion. This transaction alone was responsible for 35% of the month’s overall values. The other top deals include transactions in the financial sector – like AU Small Finance Bank’s acquisition of Fincare Small Finance Bank for $529 million. Zurich Insurance also acquired a controlling stake in Kotak General Insurance for $494 million. The inbound space drove the values with a 63% contribution while continuing the trend. This marks a 27% and 76% decline in volumes and values respectively as compared to the previous quarter. Deal Tracker: PE investments fall by 30% to $1.7 bn in September quarter, BFSI rules the roost

Record levels of cash and availability of assets helped deliver a boom with deal volume up 36 per cent and deal value up 139 per cent in 2022, according to <keyword id="205571" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bain" source="Orion">Bain</keyword> &amp; Company's annual report. "We have seen four straight years of growing deal volume and value, with 2022 setting another record year. This is in stark contrast to the mood and momentum in the rest of the world," said <keyword id="6197" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="karan-singh" source="Orion">Karan Singh</keyword>, managing partner, Bain and <keyword id="1969426" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="company-india" source="Orion">Company India</keyword>. The strong M&amp;A activity was seen across sectors, including financial services, utilities, manufacturing, and healthcare. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is a new theme and India is emerging as a hotspot for renewable energy, Singh added. Consumer tech has seen the highest start-up consolidation, followed by edtech and fintech. India emerged as global M&A hotspot in 2022: Bain & Company report

Dealmaking activity witnessed a huge decline in January, with only 145 transactions worth USD 2.7 billion being undertaken by <keyword id="46431" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-inc" source="Orion">India Inc</keyword>, a report said on Monday. By value, the overall flows suffered due to the absence of any big-ticket deal and were 56 per cent down as compared to USD 6.12 billion in the year-ago period, and 62 per cent down compared to the previous month, the report by consultancy firm <keyword id="131240" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="grant-thornton" source="Orion">Grant Thornton</keyword> said. The volumes were down 41 per cent when compared with 244 deals in January 2022, while the same were down by 3 per cent as compared to the preceding month of December. "<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> managed to account for record deal values last year (2022), which made investors hopeful about the future. However, the deal momentum in January 2023 did not match the expectation and witnessed a declining trend," its partner <keyword id="12539905" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shanthi-vijetha" source="Orion">Shanthi Vijetha</keyword> said. The mergers and acquisition (M&amp;A) deal volumes declined by 62 per cent at 26 deals worth USD 311 million, an 88 per cent decrease compared to January 2022, it said. The M&amp;A segment continued to be dominated by domestic deals, it said, adding that at USD 270 million, the monthly value was the lowest since May 2022. Private equity (PE) investments recorded 119 deals valued over USD 2.4 billion, it said, adding that while both volumes and values declined compared to January 2022, there was a 28 per cent increase in deal volumes and a 30 per cent increase in deal values when compared with December 2022. <keyword id="6363818" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pharma" source="Orion">Pharma</keyword>, healthcare and biotech stood at the top in terms of overall deal values, recording six deals valuing USD 921 million, most of which was contributed by two big-ticket transactions in the PE space, it added. India Inc sees winter chill in dealmaking activity in January: Grant Thornton

<keyword id="46431" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-inc" source="Orion">India Inc</keyword> signed 1,149 deals valued at $104.3 billion in the first half of this year, amid global uncertainties, and the country saw $6 billion from 17 IPOs -- the highest values raised in the first six months, a report showed on Thursday. The figures represent a significant 34 per cent increase in the overall deal volumes, while deal values more than doubled (with a 143 per cent increase) from the same period last year, according to the <keyword id="10410446" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="grant-thornton-bharat" source="Orion">Grant Thornton Bharat</keyword> Dealtracker report. Driven by <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="83209" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc-ltd" source="Orion">HDFC Ltd</keyword>'s $40 billion merger, LTI and <keyword id="6357902" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mindtree" source="Orion">Mindtree</keyword> merger ($17.7 billion) and Adani Group-Holcim Ltd's $10.5 billion deal, M&amp;A deal values recorded an over two times increase over H1 2021. These three deals alone accounted for 86 per cent of the total M&amp;A deal values in H1 2022. "However, corporates and more importantly PE/VCs may employ a cautiously optimistic approach as the impact of the global economic slowdown on the Indian economy becomes evident," Vijetha added. While private equity deal activity continued to dominate total deal volumes with 3/4th share, deal values were driven by mergers and acquisitions with 76 per cent of the total deal values in H1 2022. Startup, e-commerce and IT sectors led deal activity in H1 2022, driving 76 per cent of all deals followed by retail, education and pharma sectors. The M&amp;A space witnessed a significant increase in the first half, witnessing 284 deals while representing a 27 per cent growth over H1 2021. The banking and financial sector had the highest contribution of 53 per cent in terms of overall deal value in H1 2022, followed by IT and manufacturing sectors. The private equity and venture capital investments saw record volumes and values in the first six-month period with 865 deals at $25.1 billion. However, there was a 12 per cent and 15 per cent decrease in investment volumes and values over H2 2021 (the preceding six months), the report noted. "The drop in the deal values is due to a fall in big-ticket investments coupled with prevailing factors including geopolitical tensions, stock market volatility, concerns about the rise in commodity prices and the impact of inflation," the report noted. Nevertheless, large funds like <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword>, Westbridge, Baring PE, TPG, Brookfield, Blackstone and Warburg Pincus, among others, continued to keep pace with their activity. M&amp;A deals which started off very slow last year saw an uptick in the second half. Domestic deals dominated the landscape, with 350 deals valued at $14.4 billion. Inbound activity witnessed substantial growth, featuring 84 deals totaling $7.7 billion. The largest PE deal was Temasek Holdings’ investment in Manipal Health Enterprises for $2 billion. Startup funding went down by 42% in 2023, but there were pockets of activity. Retail startups led in deals, making up 20%, followed by fintech and SaaS start-ups. E-commerce and IT sectors followed, with 181 deals worth $5.5 billion. “Despite witnessing overall decline, the banking (financial services), energy (cleantech), manufacturing, and real estate sectors experienced a surge in deal activities. Here too, the activity surged sharply in the second half after the stock markets revived. “In 2023, India's IPO market thrived due to robust domestic demand fueled by a growing middle class and increased retail participation in the stock market,” the report observed. Qualified institutional placements (QIPs) however overtook IPOs, to raise as much as $7 billion. The size of fund raising surged 3.6 times over, and deal volume also went by 2.2 times. “This surge in QIP activity signals an improving investor outlook on the Indian market amid anticipated economic growth. The manufacturing sector led with 15 QIPs, followed by the banking and financial services sector with 12 QIPs,” said Grant Thornton. LG launches truly wireless earbuds in India, pricing starts at ₹24,990

New Delhi, Nov 28 () Private equity investments witnessed a robust yearly growth in October with 72 PE deals garnering around USD 3.7 billion, even as merger and acquisition activity saw a downtrend, a report said on Thursday.
 According to Grant Thornton's monthly PE Dealtracker, private equity/venture capital transactions reported 22 per cent and 25 per cent increase in deal volumes and values, respectively as compared to October 2018.
 The rise in PE deal values was largely driven by the corporate tax rate cut, which has improved both investor sentiment and confidence.
 Last month, the average deal size stood at USD 52 million, up from USD 28 million recorded in September 2019.
 "There were 72 deals aggregating to USD 3.7 billion reported in October 2019. Upbeat PE/VC activity during the month offsets the shortfall in merger and acquisition (M&amp;A) activity," Pankaj Chopda, Director, Grant Thornton India LLP said.
 "The key investments were primarily to pare debt, expand markets and capitalise on inorganic growth opportunities. Considering the current economic situation, we expect big ticket PE/VC investments to continue," Chopda said.
 He further noted that debt-heavy and capital-starved sectors such as energy and natural resources, infrastructure management, and banking and financial services will be the major seekers for PE/VC investments.
 "PE/VC transactions will continue to contribute a large share in the overall deal activity. However, the absence of large-ticket M&amp;A transactions will weaken the overall deal activity," Chopda said.
 Driven by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), PSP Investments of Canada and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund NIIF's USD 1.1 billion investment in GVK Group, the infrastructure sector dominated the PE investment arena, capturing 29 per cent of the PE deal value pie for the month.
 Other major deals include Warburg Pincus and Premji Invest's investments in SBI General Insurance and Brookfield Asset Management's fund infusion in Hotel Leelaventure Ltd.
 During January-October period, there were 666 PE deals worth USD 28.02 billion. In the year-ago period, there were 683 such transactions worth USD 17.99 billion.
 "This demonstrated increased average deal size and resulted in the highest YTD values recorded, showing the appetite among PE players to invest in India," the report said. DRR ANU

The Indian Gems and Jewellery (G&amp;J) sector is one of the largest in the world and is home to over 300,000 gems and jewellery players. “Looking at the huge potential that exists within the country, we’ve identified the gems and jewellery export as a strong growth segment for India and we plan to focus on building a large merchant base on the platform from this cluster,” said Wang. Chinese entrepreneur and billionaire <keyword id="424838" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jack-Ma">Jack Ma</keyword> who hit a jackpot with Alibaba.com, made a rather silent entry into India in 2008. Ever since, it has brought as many as 15,000 SMEs onto its platform. Globally, Alibaba has 10 million active buyers spread across 190 countries. “Our focus has always been on encouraging entrepreneurship and small businesses in China which has made us a force to reckon with and now we are bringing our expertise with Chinese and global markets to India,” said Wang. Alibaba.com in India is leveraging its channel partner network, which supports them in customer outreach, onboarding and customer service. One of the biggest challenges Indian SMEs face is the training required in onboarding digital growth and Alibaba.com brings its global insights to India there as well. “To train our merchant base, we also organize training programs and workshops across key markets. These programs not only inform our merchant base about the platform’s proposition but also give them insights into the industry, buyer trends and at the same time, enables them to leverage digital economy to take their businesses to global audiences,” said Wang. Recently, one of Alibaba’s competitors – IndiaMart in India went public. Wang believes there is still a big opportunity to capture the Indian market. “India is in a nascent stage in terms of fully adopting to the power of digital commerce and that is exactly what we at Alibaba.com are here to enable the country’s SMEs and MSMEs with,” he said.
