It is the most number of medals won by India in a single edition of the Olympics. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch bagged the silver medal with a throw of 86.67m. His compatriot Vitezslav Vesley took the bronze medal with a throw of 85.44m. Chopra came into the final as a medal contender after topping the qualification round on Wednesday with a stunning first round throw of 86.59m. But few would have thought he would bludgeon his way to gold in such a dominant fashion at the grandest stage. Season leader and pre-tournament gold favourite Johannes Vetter of Germany, who had thrown the javelin to 90m plus distances seven times between April and June, was eliminated after the first three throws as he was placed ninth with a best effort of 82.52m. Neeraj Chopra wins India’s first track and field gold at an Olympics

<ul><li>The Centre on Thursday introduced the <keyword id="406098" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taxation-Laws">Taxation Laws</keyword> (Amendment) Bill to bring closure to the retrospective income tax law which was introduced in 2012.</li><li>The UPA government in 2012 imposed capital gains tax retrospectively on some companies like <keyword id="11799509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cairn-and-vodafone">Cairn and Vodafone</keyword>.</li><li>British oil and gas company Cairn Energy is seeking to recover 1.2$ billion from India.</li></ul>The retrospective amendments attracted a lot of attention, both when they were first introduced in 2012 as well as over the years. In the recent past, two arbitral awards were issued under India’s Bilateral Investment treaties, which reignited the debate. In a welcome step, though delayed, in trying to put an end to this long-standing controversy, the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, <keyword id="3718131" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="2021">2021</keyword> (‘the Bill’) has now been passed by the Lok Sabha to withdraw the retrospective effect of these amendments. The proposal in the Bill addresses two distinct situations. The first is forward looking and provides that no order will be passed or demand raised going forward in respect of indirect transfer transactions that took place before 28 May 2012 (i.e. the date of enactment of the Finance Act, 2012). The second part relates to cases where orders of assessment, re-assessment, rectification or in withholding proceedings have already been passed in respect of pre-28 May 2012 transactions. In such cases, the orders are sought to be nullified. In such cases, the taxpayer is also entitled to a refund of taxes already paid in respect of such transactions, but without any interest being paid thereon by the Government. However, such nullification and grant of refund is not unconditional. The Bill requires the taxpayer to fulfil certain conditions, some of which are set out in the Bill and some which will be prescribed later. The conditions set out in the Bill include withdrawal by the taxpayer of all proceedings initiated by it as well as furnishing an undertaking waiving its right to claim costs, interest, damages or other relief from the Government. This is where the Bill will have maximum impact. The Statement of Objects and Reasons mentions that demands under these retrospective provisions have been raised in 17 cases, out of which arbitration proceedings under investment treaties had been initiated in 4 cases. In such cases, the order can be nullified and taxes paid (if any) can be refunded subject to the above conditions being fulfilled. Taxpayers in such situations will effectively have a choice to make. To some extent, this choice will also depend on what further conditions get prescribed in this regard. Realme’s sub-brand DIZO launches its first budget smartwatch in India at ₹3,499

The <keyword id="6357808" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="enforcement-directorate">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED) on Thursday said that it has arrested <keyword id="621863" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Singh-Gehlot">Raj Singh Gehlot</keyword>, <keyword id="6394172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="owner">owner</keyword> of <keyword id="45857" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ambience-mall">Ambience Mall</keyword> in a bank fraud case. An ED official told <keyword id="105681" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IANS">IANS</keyword> that Gehlot has been arrested from Haryana's Gurugram and will be produced before a court in Delhi later in the day. According to ED officials the bank loan fraud case is worth Rs 200 crore. According to financial probe agency sources, the ED has initiated a money laundering probe on the basis of an FIR registered by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jammu, against Aman Hospitality Private Limited and its directors for money laundering in the construction and development of the five-star Leela Ambience Convention Hotel situated in east Delhi's Yamuna Sports Complex. During investigation, it was revealed that a huge part of loan amount of more than Rs 800 crore, which was sanctioned by a consortium of banks for the hotel project, was siphoned off by AHPL and Gehlot and his associates through a web of companies owned or controlled by them, the ED source said. The source further said that a substantial part of the loan money was transferred by AHPL to several companies and individuals on the pretext of "payment of running bills and advance for supply of material/work executed". The source also said that the employees of Ambience Group and the associates of Gehlot were made directors/proprietors of these companies and he was the 'authorised signatory' in many of these companies. "However, no material was supplied and no work was executed and almost the entire amount was immediately routed back to the entities owned by <keyword id="11746607" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="raj-singh-sons">Raj Singh &amp; Sons</keyword> HUF and his brother's son. Money was further siphoned off through multiple layers by a complex web of group entities," the source added. The ED had raided several premises linked to Gehlot and several others on July 31 last year. Gehlot is also being probed by the CBI. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the CBI to probe the case for the alleged illegal construction of a commercial building on approximately 18.98 acres of land in Gurugram by blatantly flouting the building by-laws and statutory provisions in collusion with others. It was alleged that the land where the Ambience Mall was built was meant for a housing project. The CBI has registered a case against a private person, Gehlot, Ambience Ltd and Ambience Developers and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and unknown officials of <keyword id="6356420" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Huda">HUDA</keyword>, <keyword id="497256" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Town-and-country-planning-department">Town and Country Planning Department</keyword> and unknown private persons on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The ED and CBI had carried out searches at several locations of Gehlot last year. Enforcement Directorate arrests the owner of Gurgaon's Ambience Mall in J&K bank fraud case

In the midst of fears of a third Covid wave by September/October, there is good news for <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> as 76 per cent of its population has antibodies against the coronavirus. This has been revealed in the report of <keyword id="9204925" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sero-survey">sero survey</keyword> conducted by the Indian council of Medical Research (<keyword id="6364396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICMR">ICMR</keyword>) last month. According to the report, a total of 1,226 random samples were taken from different cities in Rajasthan in June-July. When these samples were tested, antibodies were found in 934 samples. This survey report indicated the presence of <keyword id="9349703" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-antibodies">Covid antibodies</keyword> in the people of the state. The Sero survey report further says that the highest number of antibodies across the country have been found in the people of Madhya Pradesh, which is around 79 per cent of the population. Rajasthan comes second after Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, the lowest antibody count has been found in Kerala which is just 44 per cent. During the second Covid wave in Rajasthan, around 6 lakh positive cases were found in two and a half months (up to April, May and mid-June). More than 6,000 people lost their lives due to the coronavirus. According to the report, Madhya Pradesh leads the chart with 79 per cent of its population having antibodies, while Rajasthan comes second with 76.2 per cent sero prevalence. Bihar has 75.9 per cent, Gujarat 75.3 per cent, Chhattisgarh 74.6 per cent, Uttarakhand 73.1 per cent, Uttar Pradesh 71 per cent and Andhra Pradesh 70.2 per cent sero prevalence. Similarly in Karnataka, it is 69.8 per cent, Tamil Nadu 69.2 per cent, Odisha 68.1 per cent, Punjab 66.5 per cent, Telangana 63.1 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir 63 per cent, Himachal Pradesh 62 per cent, Jharkhand 61.2 per cent, West Bengal 60.9 per cent, Haryana 60.1 per cent, <keyword id="11742065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="maharashtra-58">Maharashtra 58</keyword> per cent, Assam 50.3 per cent and Kerala 44.4 per cent. After Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan has the highest number of people with COVID-19 antibodies, reveals sero survey report by ICMR

<keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> on Wednesday recorded 43,654 fresh cases of Covid-19 with 640 deaths, the <keyword id="191419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health-and-Family-Welfare">Ministry of Health and Family Welfare</keyword> data showed. On Tuesday, India recorded 29,689 new Covid-19 cases, less than the 30,000-mark in 132 days, and 415 deaths. The total number of deaths has reached 4,22,022 as per the government data. According to the government, 41,678 people were discharged from hospitals and health centres in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cured to 3,06,63,147 till date as the virus continued to infect less than one lakh people over the last 50 days. According to the <keyword id="46535" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-ministry">health ministry</keyword> data, a total of 44,61,56,659 <keyword id="8764262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, including 40,02,358 in the last 24 hours. COVID-19: India clocked 43,654 new cases and 640 fatalities in a single day

Tokyo Olympics: Indian ace shuttler P V Sindhu enters pre quarters

The Delta variant-spurred Covid-19 second wave has shaved off 3 per cent from the International Monetary Fund's (<keyword id="6355408" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="imf">IMF</keyword>) previous projection for India's economic growth for fiscal year 2021-22, pegging it now at 9.5 per cent, but the country still remains the world's fastest-growing large economy. The IMF's World Economic Outlook Update (<keyword id="11733600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="weou">WEOU</keyword>) on Tuesday made the cuts to the projection of 12.5 per cent made in April, and the January projection of 11 per cent. "Growth prospects in India have been downgraded following the severe second <keyword id="9496047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-wave">Covid wave</keyword> during March-May and expected slow recovery in confidence from that setback," said the update released in Washington. The IMF stressed the importance of vaccinations in the economic recovery from the pandemic and noted that countries like India that lagged in the rate of vaccinations would suffer if more infectious variants developed. Despite the cut, India is projected to remain the fastest-growing large economy, followed by China with a gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8.1 per cent - 0.3 per cent less than the projection made in April. The US and the UK come next with growth projections of 7 per cent each - an increase of 0.6 per cent since April for the US and 1.7 per cent for the UK. India's growth rate is expected by the IMF to moderate next year to 8.5 per cent, an increase of 1.6 per cent from the April projection, and continue to be the fastest growing economy. The 9.5 per cent growth rate for India would be one of the highest recorded by the country, behind the 10.3 per cent in 2010, 9.8 per cent in 2007 and 9.6 per cent in 1988, according to IMF data. But this fiscal year's high growth rate reflects a bounce back from the economy shrinking by 7.3 per cent during the last fiscal year, which in that context would seem less impressive. The IMF kept the growth forecasts for the global economy at 6 per cent this year and 4.9 per cent next year that were made in April. Access to Covid-19 vaccines around the world and overcoming vaccine hesitancy where they are available could determine the trajectory for growth, according to the IMF. The WEOU said that amid the pandemic, there was a high degree of uncertainty for the global economy, "primarily related to the prospects of emerging market and developing economies". "Although growth could turn out to be stronger than projected, downside risks dominate in the near term," it said. It said that in a optimistic scenario, "better global cooperation on vaccines could help prevent renewed waves of infection and the emergence of new variants, end the health crisis sooner than assumed, and allow for faster normalisation of activity, particularly among emerging market and developing economies". But looking at the risks, the IMF said that "growth would be weaker than projected if logistical hurdles in procuring and distributing vaccines in emerging market and developing economies lead to an even slower pace of vaccination than assumed. InterGlobe Aviation, parent of the country's largest airline <keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">IndiGo</keyword>, on Tuesday reported a net loss of Rs 3,174 crore for the three months to June, primarily due to a sharp <keyword id="6354942" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="decline">decline</keyword> in revenues amid the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.The airline, which had a fleet of 277 planes at the end of June 2021, incurred a net loss of Rs 2,844 crore in the year-ago period. The carrier's consolidated total income increased by 177.2 per cent to Rs 3,170 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal, it said in a statement. The total income stood at Rs 1,143 crore in the first quarter of the previous financial year. The airline's total expenses increased by 59.2 per cent to Rs 6,344 crore in Q1 of 2021-22, compared to Rs 3,986 crore earlier. The company's CEO <keyword id="7255265" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronojoy-Dutta">Ronojoy Dutta</keyword> said, "Our financial results for the first quarter were severely impacted by the second Covid wave. The number of passengers traveling declined sharply in the months of May and June." With the second wave receding, IndiGo is seeing a measured recovery in bookings for July and August, he added. "Notwithstanding the industry's present challenges, we remain firmly optimistic about IndiGo's future. Our entire focus during this pandemic has been to manage our cash balances, run a high- quality airline and to continue to build our capabilities and be prepared for the post Covid environment," he stated. The carrier had reported a net loss of Rs 1,147 crore in the last quarter of 2020-21. The airline operated a peak of 1,262 daily flights and a minimum of 318 flights during the first quarter of FY22, including non-scheduled flights, the statement said. After reporting a record $1.14 billion in net income in the second quarter (Q2) 2021, <keyword id="364027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Musk">Musk</keyword> said that the electric car-maker does not uses cobalt in its vehicles. "Tesla uses no Cobalt and almost none in the nickel-based chemistries. On a weighted average basis, we might use 2% Cobalt compared to say Apple's 100% Cobalt," he said during the earnings call on Monday. "There is somehow a misconception that Tesla use a lot of Cobalt, but we actually don't. Apple uses I think almost 100% Cobalt in their batteries in cellphones and laptops," he added. Apple is reportedly developing an electric self-driving car under a project code-named Titan. "Some cobalt mined in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been linked to human rights abuses such as child labour," reports CNBC. In 2019, Apple, in addition to Tesla and other major technology companies, was named as defendants in a human rights lawsuit, according to The <keyword id="6359268" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="guardian">Guardian</keyword>. Musk said that he needs the supercharger network to grow globally. "For the supercharger to be useful to other car companies, we need to grow the network faster than we're growing vehicle output, which is not easy. We're growing vehicle output at a hell of a rate. So Superchargers need to grow faster than vehicle output," he said. On Cybertruck, he said that ramping up its production "will be difficult because it's such new architecture". "It's going to be a great product, our best product ever. But there's a lot of fundamentally new design ideas in the Cybertruck. Nobody's ever really made a car like this before.
