"This country would like to wash over all of the things that it's done, but by preserving their traditions, they were taking their lives into their own hands."<h2>Reconnecting with heritage across a diaspora</h2>There is no one definitive version of sorrel, reflecting the varied experiences and cultures of the African diaspora, according to Summers.In Jamaica, where there was <a href="https://gal-dem.com/tracing-roots-of-the-chinese-jamaican-diaspora/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an influx of Chinese indentured workers</a> in the late 19th and early 20th century, sorrel is flavored with ginger and five spice. According to informal email and text message exchanged by traders in Mumbai’s financial markets, many Indians are exploiting loopholes in foreign exchange laws. 
 
A leading tax professional told Economic Times that many of these people with undisclosed offshore bank accounts were using their contacts and arranging job appointment letters from companies in countries like the UAE and Singapore. 
 
According to Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), Indian citizens employed abroad are considered non-residents. As per income tax law, such persons are required to stay out of India for at least 182 days in a financial year to claim non-resident status. 
 
When declared as a NRI, they don’t have to disclose foreign assets to Indian tax authorities. 
 
According to text messages, 80,000 Indians have applied for residency certificate in Dubai and other nations. 
 
Though employers and companies do exist, the persons receiving the letters have no intention to join the firms as employees. All required is a job offer letter which would be used to claim residency status in the respective countries.

Australia may soon have to open its doors to talent from abroad — of which India contributes a big chunk

Underlining the contribution of non-resident Indians, Union Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> on Tuesday said <keyword id="6369957" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="remittances" source="Orion">remittances</keyword> sent to the country by overseas Indians were about USD 100 billion for the year 2022, an increase of 12 per cent in one year. Speaking at a session during the <keyword id="70478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pravasi-Bharatiya-Divas" source="Orion">Pravasi Bharatiya Divas</keyword> (PBD) convention in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city, she described NRIs as the "real ambassadors of India" and appealed to them to use made in India products and services as far as possible so that the country's individual brand can be promoted across the globe. Sitharaman also said that after the "China plus one" policy, the world is now talking about the "European Union (EU) plus one" policy. The government is strongly presenting India to multinational companies as a country where they can set up their factories apart from China and the EU, she said. Sitharaman said the <keyword id="6402673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-diaspora" source="Orion">Indian diaspora</keyword> should also partner with small and big businessmen of the country so that the entrepreneurial skills of NRIs can be harnessed in the next 25 years during the 'Amrit Kaal' of independence. This is one of the highest remittances which is coming," the finance minister said. This has gone up by 12 per cent if compared to 2021, she said. "Within a year which was post-pandemic, people thought Indian workers will not go back abroad again, they have not only gone back but more have gone for very useful employment and the remittance numbers have gone up by 12 pc within one year," she said. Citing the dominance of Indian professionals in information technology, digital technology, automobiles, semiconductor designing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and other fields, she said the country is becoming a global hub of knowledge and progress. Remittances from overseas Indians increased by 12% $100 billion in 2022: Sitharaman

New Delhi, Jan 2 () The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Thursday said the homegrown payments technology RuPay will offer 40 per cent cashback for its international card users for transactions in select countries.
 Indians travelling to the UAE, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the UK, the US, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand will be able to earn up to Rs 16,000 cashback per month by getting their RuPay International Card activated, the NPCI said in a release.
With RuPay International cards --JCB, Discover and Diners Club--customers using multiple cards can earn more cashbacks under the 'RuPay Travel Tales' campaign.
To avail the cashback benefit, customers will have to do a minimum transaction of Rs 1000 and the maximum cashback is capped at Rs 4,000 for a single transaction. 
The offer can be availed by customers using RuPay International Card four times a month that can give them a chance of earning up to Rs 16,000 as cashback. 
Praveena Rai, COO, NPCI said, "We always aim to create an end-to-end value proposition for RuPay International cardholders to make their overseas travel experience seamless and memorable. The campaign is not only providing an exciting platform for travelers to earn cashbacks but also motivating them to migrate towards digital transactions nationally and globally".
Apart from earning cashbacks, RuPay International cardholders can access to RuPay affiliated domestic/international airport lounges. 
They also can avail attractive offers on booking international fights and hotels in association with Thomas Cook and Make My Trip, the release said.
RuPay has a partnership with Discover Financial Services (DFS) and Japan based JCB International, allowing RuPay users the access to across 190 countries. 
As on date, there are over 1,100 banks live on RuPay platform including SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis bank, among others.
RuPay card base has crossed 600 million, half of which are in the mid and premium segments, NCPI said.
NPCI was incorporated in 2008 as an umbrella organization for operating retail payments and settlement systems in India. An initiative of RBI and IBA under the provisions of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, NPCI was initiated for creating a robust payment and settlement infrastructure in the country. RuPay International to offer cashback up to Rs 16K for transactions abroad

And, the fastest growth has been recorded by Telugu with an 86% increase between the years of 2010 to 2017. Aside from Telugu, eight of the 10 fastest growing foreign languages in the United States are languages that are also spoken in India. Bengali and Tamil showed a growth of 57% and 55% respectively as the second and third most rapidly growing foreign languages. Hindi, <keyword id="52565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="urdu">Urdu</keyword> and Punjabi came in 5th, 6th and 7th with Gujarati coming in 9th. And while Telegu may be the <keyword id="6915899" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fastest-growing-foreign-language">fastest growing foreign language</keyword>, Hindi is the still most commonly spoken language of Indian-origin with 863,077 people. It’s also interesting to note that the overall growth in the number of people speaking foreign languages in the United States has grown by 12%.  However, everyone isn’t convinced. Experts say Modi's compelling picth is yet to see results. “PM Modi’s reform efforts have yet to compel a significant number of non-resident Indians to invest or return,” <keyword id="1020377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sreeram-Chaulia">Sreeram Chaulia</keyword>, dean of the Jindal School of International Affairs and author of a book on Modi's foreign policy, told Bloomberg. 
 
“Part of the challenge is that India's economy remains as unpredictable as ever: On Nov. 8, Modi plunged the country into social and economic uncertainty by suddenly invalidating 86 percent of currency in circulation, leading analysts to downgrade growth forecasts. NRIs still look at India with some skepticism, because ease of doing business in India has not improved that much," said Chaulia. 
 The Indian diaspora is a crucial part of India's economy. In 2015, the <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> said the diaspora sent back $72.2 billion in remittances, more than India's bilateral trade with the U.S. and almost as much as the $74.9 billion trade relationship with China. 
 
The diaspora, including groups like the Overseas Friends of BJP, can also help Modi's attempt to change the Indian economy's reputation for corruption and red tape, Chauthaiwale said. 
 "Rebranding was necessary, because when Prime Minister Modi took charge, practically everyone had written off India because of the corruption scandals, nepotism and indecision. People are rediscovering the potential of India, especially the <keyword id="6357804" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NRI">NRI</keyword> community,” said Chauthaiwale,

As the BJP prepares for crucial state elections next year, the party won't end its global outreach, Chauthaiwale said, and will help to coordinate foreign visits for cabinet ministers with newly engaged diaspora groups. 
 
"They have a new sense of identity, and they are now also seeing themselves as a force to be reckoned with," he said.

(Eds: Combining related stories) New Delhi, May 9 () The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases crossed 60,000 on Saturday and the death toll neared the 2,000 mark after more people tested positive for the deadly virus infection across states, while worries mounted globally about re-emergence of the outbreak after reopening of locked down economies. The Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day and a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far across hundreds of government and private labs. But a large number of cases continued to get detected in several states and union territories, barring Kerala and a few smaller states including in North-East that reported nil or single-digit fresh cases. In its daily update, the Union Health Ministry said the COVID-19 death toll has risen to 1,981 and the number of cases has climbed to 59,662, registering an increase of 95 deaths and 3,320 cases in 24 hours till Saturday morning. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 39,834, while 17,846 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said. However, a tally of numbers reported by different states and UTs, as of 6.45 PM, showed at least 60,266 confirmed cases across the country. This showed an increase of nearly 4,000 confirmed cases since Friday morning. On Saturday, fresh cases were reported from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Bihar and Assam, among other places. Globally, nearly 40 lakh people have tested positive for the deadly virus since its emergence in China last December, while approximately 2.75 lakh people have lost their lives. However, nearly 13 lakh people have recovered too, including nearly 2 lakh in the US and over 1.4 lakh in Germany. Germany and South Korea are among those countries that have been seen as having successfully avoided large number of deaths by their extensive testing and contact tracing measures. But, worries mounted on Saturday about fresh outbreaks in both the countries following various lockdown relaxations, thus raising the risks associated with reopening of economies. In India also some relaxations have been given from the nationwide lockdown, which has been in place since March 25 and is scheduled to end on May 17 as of now. The Goa government may allow holding of music classes and reopening of some state-run libraries in a phased manner on the condition of maintaining strict social distancing norms, the state's Art and Culture Minister Govind Gawade said on Saturday. Goa is classified as a green zone with no coronavirus positive case as of now. Special trains and buses are also being run to help lakhs of migrant workers reach their native places, while special flights are bringing back Indians stranded abroad. But the ongoing lockdown is also estimated to have hit the economic hard with several experts forecasting zero to very low GDP growth for the current fiscal, while a few have even forecast a decline in the GDP if the lockdown restrictions continue longer. While fuel prices have already been hiked, an industry body of real estate developers said cement and steel rates have increased by 40-50 per cent in the last few weeks and alleged price cartelisation and unfair trade practices by their manufacturers. Some industrial establishments have begun opening their facilities as per the available relaxations. Among other companies, Hyundai Motor India said its Chennai-based manufacturing facility rolled out 200 cars on the first day of resuming production on Friday. Tamil Nadu reported four more deaths during the day, taking its death toll to 44, while 526 more people tested positive for the virus to take its tally to over 6,500. In the national capital also, 224 new COVID-19 cases were recorded to take its tally to 6,542. In Delhi, there was also confusion over the death toll as the data from the four hospitals showed more fatalities than the number reported by the Delhi government. Delhi's Health Minister Satyendar Jain said there is no reason to hide anything and not a single case will go unaccounted for, but gave no explanation for the discrepancy. There has been a mismatch in the numbers of West Bengal also for several days with the state government's figures being lower than that of the Union Health Ministry. On the outskirts of the national capital, Noida reported its second COVID-19 death while its total cases rose to 216. The overall figure for Uttar Pradesh also rose. Rajasthan recorded 76 more cases, while 36 new cases were detected in Karnataka too. In Bihar, five Bihar Military Police (BMP) personnel tested positive, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 579. In Assam, a dental college student's test came positive. The Union Health Ministry has also revised its policy for discharge of COVID-19 patients under which only those developing severe illness or having compromised immunity will have to test negative through RT-PCR test before being discharged by a hospital. Moderate cases of COVID-19 and pre-symptomatic, mild and very mild cases need not undergo tests before being discharged after resolution of their symptoms. Wealthy Indians look to stable Caribbean investment programmes for wealth diversification

India continues to be the largest country of origin of international migrants with a 17.5 million-strong diaspora across the world, and it received the highest remittance of USD 78.6 billion from Indians living abroad, the UN migration agency said. The International Organisation for Migration said in its 'Global Migration Report 2020' that the number of international migrants in 2019 is now estimated at 270 million and the top destination remains the US, at nearly 51 million. In its latest global report, the IOM noted that the overall figure represents just a tiny fraction of the world's population, although it is a 0.1 per cent increase on the level indicated in its last report, published two years ago. "This figure remains a very small percentage of the world's population (at 3.5 per cent), meaning that the vast majority of people globally (96.5 per cent) are estimated to be residing in the country in which they were born," IOM's Global Migration Report 2020 said. According to the UN agency, more than half of all international migrants (141 million) live in Europe and North America. An estimated 52 per cent are male, and nearly two-thirds of all migrants are looking for work; that's around 164 million people. India continued to be the largest country of origin of international migrants. It had the largest number of migrants living abroad (17.5 million), followed by <keyword id="3746" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword> (11.8 million) and <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> (10.7 million). The top destination country remained the United States (50.7 million international migrants). The report also noted that international remittances increased to USD 689 billion in 2018. The top three remittance recipients were India (USD 78.6 billion), China (USD 67.4 billion) and Mexico (USD 35.7 billion). The United States remained the top remittance-sending country (USD 68.0 billion) followed by the United Arab Emirates (USD 44.4 billion) and <keyword id="50996" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword> (USD 36.1 billion). Although most migrants travelled to the US, the report confirmed other important migration corridors from poorer countries to richer nations such as those to France, <keyword id="6358826" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword>, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. "This pattern is likely to remain the same for many years into the future, especially as populations in some developing subregions and countries are projected to increase in coming decades, placing migration pressure on future generations", IOM said. In Africa, Asia and Europe, most international migrants stay within their regions of birth, but the majority of migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean and North America do not. Focusing on the Middle East, data showed that Gulf countries have some of the largest numbers of temporary labour migrants in the world, including the United Arab Emirates, where they make up almost 90 per cent of the population. Highlighting how ongoing conflicts and violence in Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Myanmar, <keyword id="294553" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Sudan">South Sudan</keyword>, Syria and <keyword id="44789" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yemen">Yemen</keyword> have led to massive internal displacement in the last two years, IOM's Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre said that a total of 41.3 million people were forced to flee their homes at the end of 2018 - a record since monitoring began in 1998. Syria has the highest internally population of displaced people, at 6.1 million, followed by Colombia (5.8 million) and the Congo (3.1 million). After nearly nine years of conflict, Syria is also the top refugee-originating country, at well over six million - dwarfing <keyword id="6354541" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="afghanistan">Afghanistan</keyword> (at around 2.5 million) - out of a total of nearly 26 million. He further stated that if the lockdown goes beyond a month, the M&amp;E sector can expect a flat growth. Moreover, if the lockdown is extended to 3 months, it could lead to a de-growth of 25% for the sector. Key findings: Television: The TV industry grew from Rs 740 billion to Rs 788 billion in 2019, a growth of 6.5%. TV advertising grew 5% to Rs 320 billion while subscription grew 7% to Rs 468 billion. Regional channels benefited from the New Tariff Order as their consumption increased by over 20% in certain cases. General entertainment and movie channels led with 74% of viewership. On the back of several key announcements by the central and state governments such as Article 370, the Citizenship Amendment Act, and a general election, the news genre witnessed a growth to almost 9% of total viewership, up from 7.3% in 2018. In sports cricket emerged as the big winner in 2019 as it accounted for over 80% of the sports viewership, up from 70% last year, due to the ICC World Cup. Key insights - Television will remain the largest earner of advertising revenues even in 2025, approaching Rs 570 billion. Viewership of regional language channels will continue to grow and reach 55% of total viewership in India as their content quality improves further. Content viewed on smart TV sets will begin to reflect that consumed on mobile phones, providing a window for user generated content companies and other non-broadcasters to serve content on the connected television screen. Print: Despite a 3% revenue de-growth at Rs 296 billion, print continued to retain the second largest share of the Indian M&amp;E sector. Circulation revenues increased by 2% to Rs 90 billion as newspaper companies tactically increased prices in certain markets. Advertising revenues fell 5% to Rs 206 billion in 2019 as AdEX volumes fell by 8%. Margins improved as newsprint cost measures were implemented and companies benefited from the reduction of newsprint prices. Key insights – 2019 witnessed a significant growth in digital news consumers over 2018 when 300 million Indians consumed news online. Most large print companies had a defined digital business, with two companies crossing Rs 1 billion in digital revenues. Digital subscription, though nascent, has increased as several publications have put digital products behind a paywall. Digital media: In 2019, digital media grew 31% to reach Rs 221 billion and is expected to grow at 23% CAGR to reach Rs 414 billion by 2022. Digital advertising grew 24% to Rs 192 billion driven by increased consumption of content on digital platforms and marketeers’ preference to measure performance. SME and long tail advertisers increased their spends on digital media as well.Pay digital subscribers crossed 10 million for the first time as sports and other premium content were put behind a paywall.Consequently, subscription revenue grew 106% to Rs 29 billion. Digital consumption grew across platforms where video viewers increased by 16%, audio streamers by 33% and news consumers by 22%. Key insights: By 2020, OTT subscription market will approximate 10% of the total TV subscription market (without, however, considering data charges).We estimate over 40 million connected TVs by 2025, which will provide a huge opportunity for content creators to reach family consumers.Better bandwidth will drive large screen consumption. By 2025, 750 million smart phone screens will also increase the demand for regional, UGC and short content, creating a short video ecosystem that can create significant employment.The battle for content discovery will intensity and move to the unified interface. Films: The Indian film segment grew 10% in 2019 to reach Rs 191 billion driven by the growth in domestic theatrical revenues and both rates and volume of digital/ OTT rights sold. Domestic film revenues crossed Rs 115 billion with Gross Box Office collections for Hindi films at RS 49.5 billion – the highest ever for Hindi theatricals. Overseas theatricals revenues fell 10% to Rs 27 billion despite more films being released abroad primarily as films with superstars didn’t perform as well in 2019. 108 Hollywood films were released in 2019 as compared to 98 in 2018. The gross box office collections of Hollywood films in India (inclusive of all their Indian language dubbed versions) grew 33% to reach Rs 16 billion. As single screens continued to reduce, the total screen count decreased by 74 to 9,527. Key Insights: Digital rights continued to grow in 2019 with an increase in revenues from Rs 13.5 billion in 2018 to RS 19 billion in 2019. Digital release windows shortened with some movies releasing on OTT platforms even before their release on television. In-cinema advertising grew marginally to RS 7.7 billion in 2019 as multiplexes and advertising aggregators started signing long-term deals with brands. Seventeen hindi films entered the coveted RS 100 crore club in 2019, which is the highest ever. Interestingly, six movies made it to the Rs 200 crore club in 2019, as opposed to three in 2018. The future will be driven by immersive content (technology and VFX rich) experiences to drive theatrical footfalls and some genres of films could migrate to home viewership only.We can expect to see creation of a segmented Hindi-mass product for the heartland at low ticket prices.
