Tensions in Middle-East are rapidly inching closer to their zenith, with Iran firing about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel late yesterday night. In response today, the Indian markets witnessed their worst decline in two months, with Sensex dipping around 1,769 points, or 2.1% to close at 82,497.10. <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> followed suit and was also down by 2.1% to close the day at 25,250.10. As a result, about Rs 11 lakh crore were wiped off the market today. The decline was broad-based, with sectors like realty (dipped by over 4%) auto, and energy suffering the most. Broader indices also fell, losing nearly 2% each. The Hang Seng index, which had rallied over 14% during the last week, largely on the back of various stimulus measures announced by the central bank to stir consumption in the Chinese economy, also slumped around 1.47%. With the possibility of an all-out war between Iran and Israel looming on the horizon, threatening to happen sooner than later, markets are expected to remain volatile in near future. Even the India VIX, seen as a gauge of uncertainty and investor fear in the market, jumped over 9% during the day. The war could throw a huge spanner on India's crude oil import plans. As of August 2024, about 44.6% of India's crude oil imports came from <keyword id="19904316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="middle-east" source="keywords">Middle East</keyword>. Israel has already promised significant retaliation, in response to Iran's attack in the days to come. And the strong possibility of a full-blown Israeli attack in Middle East, particularly major oil fields in Iran has sent the crude oil prices surging. Closer home, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) was amongst the biggest gainers on NSE today. <h2>Should Indian investors worry? </h2>But is the impending action in Middle-East the only reason behind today's drastic fall? Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP, Research &amp; Advisory at Master Capital Services notes that while it plays a significant role, other factors are also at play. "Recent regulatory changes in the F&amp;O segment by SEBI is expected to impact trading volumes, as retail participation may decline due to the increased contract size and limits on weekly expiries. Meanwhile, strength in the Chinese market, following the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) stimulus package, has also diverted foreign investment to China, where valuations remain more attractive compared to India", he noted. But Upadhyay believes that the extension of losses in Indian markets wont last long. "From a technical perspective, as long as prices hold above the 25,250–25,100 zone, any decline could present an opportunity to build fresh long positions. A stock-specific approach is advisable, with sectors such as Oil, IT, PSU Banks, Metals, and Chemicals likely to outperform in the coming days", he adds. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities observes that as long as market is trading below 25,365/82,800, the weak sentiment is likely to continue. On the down side, it could slip till 25,150-25,025/82,200-82,000 as well. On the other side, one quick technical pullback is likely if the market succeeds to trade above 25,365/82,800. Above the same, it could bounce back till 25,475-25,500/83,100-83,300. These companies are scheduled to release their quarterly financial results later today. "Nifty continues to remain in a range of 24800 to 25200. However, FIIs long continue to be at 36% indicating the rise of net shorts which can see a selling pressure in indices at resistances. For any short covering in Nifty, it has to cross the 25300+ level for the same. The outflow came following a nine-month high investment of ₹57,724 crore in September. Looking ahead, global factors such as geopolitical developments and the future direction of interest rates will play a crucial role in determining the flow of foreign investments into the Indian equity markets, as per Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India. The geopolitical crisis has also led to a sharp rise in Brent crude oil prices from $69 per barrel on Sep 10 to $79 per barrel on Oct 10, which poses inflationary risks and increases the fiscal burden for India, he added. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Indian billionaire Karan Adani announced plans to challenge Chinese dominance in global seaports.</li><li>Adani Ports has received "in-principle" approval for a $2 billion project in Da Nang, Vietnam.</li></ul>Karan Adani, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gautam-adani-succession-planning-sons-nephews-take-over-retirement-handover-2024-8">son of one of Asia's richest men</a>, wants to loosen China's grip on seaports and transform India into a major trading hub."We are working on making India the center point of the overall supply chain from east to west," said Karan in an interview with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-05/adani-ports-aims-to-grow-india-into-global-trading-hub-in-challenge-to-china">Bloomberg</a> for their "Inside Adani" series.Karan, who is the CEO of Adani Ports, said that the company had received an "in-principle" from the Vietnamese government for a potential $2 billion greenfield project in Da Nang.This would be the latest addition to the Adani Ports' portfolio. In 2022, it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/with-haifa-port-acquisition-adani-sets-its-eyes-on-opportunities-in-europe/article65643118.ece">won a joint bid</a> on the Israel government's tender to buy the Haifa Port for $1.2 billion.It also owns port assets in Colombo in Sri Lanka and the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.<h2 id="b168f51e-af17-4dfd-93ff-9422bbccd00f">Loosening China's grip</h2>India has long feared that China is surrounding its country with ports. The trade infrastructure in the Indian Ocean is often referred to as China's "string of pearls".China's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-spends-twice-us-but-belt-road-initiative-losing-steam-2021-9">Belt and Road initiative</a> (also referred to as the New Silk Road) involves buying up multiple ports across the world to build a sea route running from the coast of China through the major transit route of the Indian Ocean and the busiest maritime points of the Middle East, and ending in Europe.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/interactive/2023/china-ports-trade-military-navy/">According to the Washington Post</a>, the majority of investments in Chinese-owned ports have been made by companies owned by the Chinese government, which would make the Chinese Communist Party the biggest operator of the ports that fuel global supply chains.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cfr.org/tracker/china-overseas-ports">Council on Foreign Relations states</a> that China operates or has ownership stakes in at least one port in every continent except Antarctica. 92 out of the 101 ports were active as of 2023.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ft.com/content/a7c2b2f6-e106-436d-a599-cfcc69d18b05">Financial Times</a> cited a report by the Qianzhan Industrial Research Institute stating that China invested at least $40bn in coastal port infrastructure between 2016 and 2021.It also showed that China has 76 port terminals able to support large ships carrying more than 14,000 20ft containers, while south and south-east Asian countries have just 31 between them.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fortuneindia.com/enterprise/adani-kerala-to-fast-track-vizhinjam-port-completion-with-rs-20000-crore-investment/117536">Fortune India reported</a> that so far, 75% of India's transshipped cargo is handled by ports outside the country.The Adani Group wants to change that.<h2 id="f5591fc4-d44e-43a5-90bb-81fe08ef0678">Making India the world's factory</h2>The company has openly aligned its business interests with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development agenda of making India the world's factory.Earlier this month, it welcomed the first mother ship in the first phase of its port in Vizhinjam harbor, a project undertaken with the state government of Kerala in India.Expected to reach completion in 2028, the seaport aims to handle up to half of India's container transshipment needs.According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Adani Enterprises, the group's main company, reported revenue of $11.6 billion in 2024, and Karan Adani's father, Gautam Adani, owns a 75% stake.The 62-year-old is worth over $80 billion and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gautam-adani-succession-planning-sons-nephews-take-over-retirement-handover-2024-8">announced his succession plan</a> on Monday — naming his sons Karan and Jeet and nephews Pranav and Sagar as heirs to the Adani Group.The Adani family have previously faced scrutiny for their close ties to Modi, and allegations of preferential treatment from the Modi government.The Adanis frame the association as a desire to improve the country, with the Chairman's Message on the Adani Group website promising to "foray into sectors where the country needs to establish a foothold," and affirming that they will "look at these opportunities as part of our national duty."

Moreover, Israel and US are bracing for a significant escalation after Iran and Hamas pledged to retaliate against Israel for killings last week of a Hamas Leader, traders said. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex rebounded 903.63 points, or 1.15 per cent, to 79,663.03 points, while the Nifty increased by 270.50 points, or 1.12 per cent, to 24,326.10 points. As per data from the Labor Department, the nonfarm payrolls increased by just 114,000 jobs in July, falling short of the 175,000 expected. This is also below the 200,000 jobs needed to keep up with the population growth. The fear of a looming recession has decreased the appetite of investors, resulting in a withdrawal. Economists at Goldman Sachs have increased the probability of a recession in the US in the next 12 months to 25%.
