<ul class="summary-list"><li>I spent 11 months fixing up our house so my son could get married in our backyard.</li><li>We ended up spending around $40,000 to renovate the kitchen and backyard.</li></ul><p>I walked in the door after work, and I got a notification on my personal phone, it was a Facebook alert. My son's girlfriend had just updated her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/couple-met-facebook-married-a-week-after-they-met-person-2023-2">relationship status</a> to "engaged." It took a moment to sink in. </p><p>That's when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/important-lessons-for-couples-before-wedding-2021-7">the wedding planning began</a>. Venues were too expensive for my son and his fiancé, and because I owned a large home, our home became their venue.</p><h2 id="dd917187-66c2-4ffb-b02d-488eddfa3dc7">Planning a wedding can be expensive</h2><p>We'd only met Mikayla a few months prior when she came over for dinner. I would learn on their wedding day that they'd actually been dating on and off since high school. We liked her from the beginning and grew to love her as though she was our own daughter.</p><p>Following the announcement, they began their wedding plans and a quest to find a venue. But after a few weeks, reality and despair set in. A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-wedding-venue-in-every-state">venue in Southern California</a> was going to cost between $30,000 and $50,000, money that a young college couple didn't have. </p><p>At the time, I owned a large home with ¾ acre of land in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yorba-linda-plane-crash-deaths-injuries-2019-2">the community of Yorba Linda</a>. Looking back, I don't know exactly how it happened if I volunteered or was "voluntold," but somehow, my backyard became their future venue.</p><div type="image" title="Backyard being remodelded." height="2988" width="5312" msid="115019400" hostid="261" sizebytes="3285974"></div><p>Though I'd kept up on maintaining the property over the 20 years we'd lived there, the kids had ideas for their wedding and improvements to the yard. </p><h2 id="f31e51c8-2d32-437f-b2be-25e92ef9976a">We redid our backyard</h2><p>As I pulled up in front of my house one day after work, I wasn't able to park in my driveway. That is because my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/struggles-of-living-in-an-rv-camoer-2020-6">camping trailer</a> was now in my parking spot. Next to it was a roll-off dumpster. As I walked up to the house, a Bobcat tractor emerged from my back yard, my son at the controls, the bucket filled with brush from my back hill. </p><p>Gone was the overgrown sagebrush, replaced with all manner of drought-tolerant plants, including cactus, lavender, salvia, agave, and Italian cypress trees. The playground was transformed into a butterfly garden, and the basketball court was now a dance floor. An arch formed from Sage branches would serve as the focal point. </p><p>To save money, we would get truckloads of plants from Craigslist for free. Of course, we had to dig them out ourselves, but it was worth the tens of thousands of dollars we saved just on landscaping.</p><p>Over the next 11 months, the four of us worked tirelessly to create the perfect wedding venue. Whenever I wasn't at work or the kids weren't in class we were working on the yard and the house. It was exhausting, but it was a labor of love. We got to know our future daughter-in-law, and we bonded as a family. And the venue was beautiful.</p><div type="image" title="Backyard under construction" height="2988" width="5312" msid="115019396" hostid="261" sizebytes="1209612"></div><p>They saved money with the catering because the bride's uncle ran a catering company and provided all the food. The only downside of that was having a trailer-mounted smoking oven in my yard and having to smell the meat cooking for three days. </p><p>The rehearsal dinner was held the night before on the dance floor. The next day, we were ready for the wedding of 150 friends and family. It was everything that the kids wanted. Everyone had a great time, and we got nothing but compliments on how great the house and yard looked. All the months of hard work paid off. </p><div type="image" title="Couple getting married in a backyard" height="900" width="1200" msid="115019395" hostid="261" sizebytes="207646"></div><p>A few months later, my son received his commission as an Army officer, and the kids were off to Georgia.</p><h2 id="1f27f6d4-5b4f-48a4-98bc-29ac6c1c449d">The house sold immediately because of the improvements we made</h2><p>Within a few years my son had come off active duty and settled in Washington state. Our granddaughter was born shortly thereafter, and my wife and I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retired-early-moved-to-rv-be-close-to-family-2024-8">decided to move closer</a>. </p><p>The listing agent said that everyone who came to see the house walked straight through to the backyard and stared in wonder. The house was beautiful, but the backyard is what sold it. We had an offer within a week of the listing and were under contract a few days later.</p><div type="image" title="Backyard" height="540" width="1110" msid="115019401" hostid="261" sizebytes="108050"></div><p>Being in construction at the time I can tell you that this job would have cost over $200,000 for just labor alone had I hired professionals for all of it. I spent $9,000 to have a painting company come in to do the inside and outside of the house, and I added $17,000 on a long overdue upgrade to the kitchen and downstairs bath. Plus, pallets of retaining wall stones, new grass, outdoor lighting, and everything else. </p><p>I spent some $40,000 in total. But instead of paying for a one-time event, I made an investment in my home, which paid off when I sold it.</p>

We've been working with Business Insider to publish these lists for the past four years, but this is the first year we're doing so under the <a target="_blank" href="https://termina.ai">Termina</a> brand. Incubated by Tribe Capital, Termina is an AI-software platform that powers quantitative due diligence for leading investors around the world.</p><p>Our methodology is the same as it was in past years. It analyzes each investor's performance in 25 areas using Crunchbase and PitchBook data. Since one of our goals is to analyze investor's potential success rather than focus solely on past achievements, we only assess investors who have made a minimum of five investments between 2009 and 2024. Our list includes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-capitalists-startup-investors-shaking-up-venture-capital-2021-9">solo venture capitalists</a> and angel investors who are assessed based on their investments in US companies.</p><p>To be named to the list, seed investors must have:</p><ol><li><p>Investments that performed well, including successful IPOs or acquisitions (exits that were meaningfully above "liquidation preference" or showed increased company value rather than simply raising capital).</p></li><li><p>Show intermediate signs of future success with seed investments that consistently receive follow-on investment.</p></li><li><p>Be active in the seed-investing ecosystem, with moderate-to-high levels of activity over the past two years.</p></li></ol><p>Though each criterion is weighted equally, exits (IPOs or acquisitions) statistically have the most influence in differentiating investors.</p><p>Over 1,800 investors met the above criteria, an 18% increase from last year. The seed-investor ecosystem grows every year, making the list more competitive. We're also delighted that there were 187 female candidates with sufficient data, a significant increase that allowed us to release an expanded Seed 40 list this year. Ten percent of all seed investors in scope were women, up from 8% when the first Seed 100 was released in 2021.</p><p>The final rankings had 35 new investors, 21 who improved their rank, and 39 with the same or lower rank as last year.</p><h2><strong>AI is storming seed investing and beyond</strong></h2><p>One reason we look at seed-stage investments is because they tend to be leading indicators of innovation in the coming years. OpenAI released their GPT-4 model just over a year ago. The model reached an inflection point of capability that has ignited the imagination of entrepreneurs and investors worldwide. The result in just one year is the largest-ever rebalancing of how investors allocate seed capital across sectors. In our analysis, AI tech receives over 16% of all seed-investing capital, with a significant jump in the 12 months following GPT-4's release.</p><p>In the chart below, we show five seed-investment categories to contextualize the growth of AI investment. This is not an exhaustive view of seed-investment sectors. In this view, though there has been a steady expansion of AI investing at the seed stage, the jump last year clearly stands out.</p><div type="image" title="For Seed 100 methodology post" height="637" width="1600" msid="109881431" hostid="261" sizebytes="52084"></div><p>We believe AI will allow more seed-stage companies to bring products to market with less capital, similar to how cloud computing accelerated processes and reduced the capital required to launch products. <ul class="summary-list"><li>To celebrate her 40th birthday, Wendy Altschuler was not interested in dragging around her three kids.</li><li>Her husband agreed to take over parenting duties while she traveled solo to explore Switzerland.</li></ul><p>I've found that women are often expected to give up parts of themselves after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-gen-z-parents-struggle-lonely-childcare-costs-money-friends-2023-11">entering motherhood</a>. We're pigeonholed into a world where we're supposed to be innate nurturers who only care about our children, not ourselves. </p><p>For my 40th birthday, I wanted to follow my interests and passions and do <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-without-kids-better-parent-avoid-burnout-2023-7">something just for me</a>. My goal was to avoid having to consider anyone else or alter my plans for the greater comfort and welfare of my family. </p><p>Rather than drag my three kids on an adventure that would ultimately turn into a trip that wasn't about me at all, I left my brood at home and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/switzerland-village-roggwil-hidden-gem-destination-backpacking-europe-2023-9">traveled to a Swiss mountain town</a>. I wanted to hike with bell-clad cows, climb a via ferrata, and go kayaking. And I wanted to do it all alone. Alone, alone, alone. </p><h2 id="d6fdb3fd-094b-4eb9-8fe8-75395d447741">I fought off mom guilt  </h2><p>I felt incredibly grateful that I was in a privileged position to make this choice in the first place. Many mothers are just trying to make ends meet, to survive, and planning an elaborate birthday romp across the Atlantic Ocean isn't an option. </p><p>I was fortunate enough to have a husband who was willing and able to take on all the parenting duties at home while I traveled abroad. As we didn't have the option of childcare, going solo was the only option for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-solo-travel-freedom-no-kids-2024-1">kid-free trip</a>. Of course, I was worried that if something happened and my kids needed me, I wouldn't be there. Guilt is an overpowering force field that many moms deal with ad nauseam. </p><p>Ultimately, though, I didn't want life to pass me by, leaving my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shows/the-ultimate-list">bucket list</a> unchecked. Why should I have to wait until my kids are fully grown to have an adventure of my own? Plus, who knows what my health will be like then or what other responsibilities might take precedence? </p><p>For me, on this birthday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/ChnFPaogiVB/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D">Dolly Parton's words rang true</a>: "If there's something that you need to do, want to do, can afford to do, and got the nerve to do, I think you should do it if it's going to make you feel better about yourself." </p><div type="image" title="Woman kayaking on red kayak in Switzerland." height="1836" width="2448" msid="112794911" hostid="261" sizebytes="267506"></div><h2 id="eec7cc0b-c24c-48ec-956c-eab90b81f892">The travel itinerary was focused on my interests</h2><p>The moment I arrived in Engelberg, about an hour and 15 minutes from Zurich Airport and in the heart of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mistakes-i-made-switzerland-first-time-airbnb-restaurants-buses-2024-7">Switzerland</a>, I let out an audible sigh. As someone who grew up in Montana, with nature and wildlife all around, mountains have always felt like home to me — even in a town with a different language and culture. In this small hamlet of under 5,000 residents, I could breathe again. </p><p>With a long list of things I wanted to do, I began by making my way to the famous Benedictine Monastery, built in 1120, where monks still live and work. </p><p>Next, I bundled up and took a cable car to the top of Mount Titlis in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.switzerland-tickets.com/mount-titlis/cable-car/">world's first revolving cable car</a> where, no matter what time of year it is, there's only one season: winter. </p><p>I walked across the highest suspension bridge in Europe; wandered through the glacier cave, illuminated and still; sat on the glacier chairlift to snap photographs; and took my place in line to go sledding at Glacier Park, where a large tourist family laughed and tossed snowballs at each other, making me painfully miss my three boys at home. </p><p>My brood would have loved to play in the snow; I had to fight back feelings of lonesomeness. </p><h2 id="995849ea-c10a-42bb-9dc5-f051bc416a2b">The older I get, the more obsessed I get with longevity </h2><p>Using my body fully has become a priority as I age, so that was a must for this trip. The next couple of days were filled with outdoorsy escapades, where I hiked on numerous paths full of trailside cheese stands, wildflower-dotted mountainsides, and mooing cows. </p><p>I felt butterflies in my stomach on the via ferrata, a thrilling climbing route that uses fixed steel cables, ladders, and other systems to safely help you navigate steep and rocky terrain. At the top, I felt powerful and itty bitty at the same time. </p><p>The rain poured down in sheets the day I went kayaking across Trüebsee Lake, an alpine loch at the foot of Titlis mountain, high above Engelberg, reached only by cable car or intrepid foot. With the lake completely to myself, I paddled around and surveyed the clouds as they seemed to pucker and blot out the mountains. The cacophony of sound was so great that I could only hear the shower and my own thoughts. </p><p>I closed my eyes, put one hand to my heart, and smiled. </p><h2 id="50a7c730-13c6-427b-a296-15c75d61f7f1">I want my kids to see me as more than just a mom </h2><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-mom-solo-travel-mom-guilt-2024-4">There was no guilt</a>, no desire to justify my choices; I simply felt delighted for making the resolution to take care of myself, for carving out time to celebrate who I am as an individual, separate from my kids. </p><p>I'm a whole being, and I was one before parenthood; I have my own curiosities and aspirations, and my identity includes much more than my cherished title of "mom." </p><p>I want my children to see that I'm an adventure-seeking human who loves traveling, moving her body in nature, and learning about other cultures and destinations because that is exactly what I want for them.</p><p>A physical reset helped me to return home invigorated and appreciative.</p>

The <keyword id="20340200" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="assets-under-management" source="keywords">Assets Under Management</keyword> (<keyword id="20019621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="keywords">AUM</keyword>) of <keyword id="20300870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-mutual-funds" source="keywords">equity mutual funds</keyword> have <keyword id="20641508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surged" source="keywords">surged</keyword> by 5.37 per cent sequentially to Rs 25,12,845.59 crore in July 2024 from Rs 23,84,727.69 crore in June 2024, <keyword id="22838645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PL-Wealth-Management" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="PL Wealth Management" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="PL Wealth Management">PL Wealth Management</keyword> said in a statement.<br /><br />The observation, which is based on 283 open-ended equity diversified funds, cited that 39 per cent of these funds have outperformed their respective benchmarks over the past month, ending July 31st, 2024,<br /><br />The cumulative total of funds that outperformed stood at 109 during the month ending July 2024 (one month). AUM measures the total market value of assets that a person or entity manages for clients or on behalf of investors.<br /><br />Under the <keyword id="21184260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="large-cap-funds" source="keywords">large-cap funds</keyword>, about 58 per cent of <keyword id="19915334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="schemes" source="keywords">schemes</keyword> outperformed on S&amp;P BSE 100 - TRI benchmark, out of 31 schemes observed by <keyword id="19999821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prabhudas-Lilladher" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Prabhudas Lilladher" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Prabhudas Lilladher">Prabhudas Lilladher</keyword>'s wealth management arm.<br /><br />About 24 per cent of schemes outperformed under the large and mid-cap funds, of which 29 were observed. Under the multi-cap funds about 40 per cent of schemes outperformed, whereas in the flexi-cap funds, the percentage of schemes outperforming was 33 per cent.<br /><br />Going further, about 38 per cent of schemes under the midcap outperformed. Interestingly, the data observed that not a single scheme in small-cap funds manages to outperform their respective benchmarks. <br /><br />According to the observations made by L Wealth Management, Value Contra Div Yield Funds was the best-performing category, where 78 per cent of the schemes outperformed the benchmark.
