The Sensex lost nearly 500 points on Monday as investors feared a tit-for-tat trade battle between the US and India after the latter raised tariffs on 28 US items in retaliation to US tariffs. The US had raised tariffs on Indian aluminium and steel last year and had ended India's $5.6 billion trade concessions under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme earlier this year. Besides, the US-China trade tension also weighed on the investor sentiments. Caution was also seen ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting which will start on June 18-19. "Domestic market has been caught in a bearish grip as investors are increasingly turning cautious led by global trade war which has got murkier. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East triggered a sudden spurt in oil prices," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd. "Domestic market consolidation will be maintained till global events unfolds like central bank and GST council meet this week. Consolidation was broad based with metals, auto, pharma and financials under performing," he added. Metal stocks lost the most over slowdown fears. The Nifty metal index declined by 2.83 per cent. The Sensex, after trading in the red throughout the day, closed 491.28 points or 1.25 per cent lower at 38,960.79. The Nifty also shed 148.45 points or 1.26 per cent to settled at 11,674.85. Investor fear was also evident as the India Vix shot up by over 6 per cent. "Local investors will be worried as to how US could react to this (India's raising tarifffs). However, FIIs will wait for any such move by the US before feeling the Indian market," Deepak Jasani of HDFC Securities told IANS. "$250-400 million is not a big number, but 28 items consist of almonds, walnuts and apples which affect their farmers. This could trigger a response... which will not bode well for the Indian markets," he added. Tata Steel, Tata Motors, ONGC, Vedanta and index heavyweight Reliance Industries lost the most during the day's trade while Yes Bank and Coal India and Insosys were the only scrips who managed to finish in the green on the BSE. Indian stock market is spooked by the trade tariffs war with US

Riding positive indicators from markets abroad, gold traded on a new record high on the futures trade market in India. It traded at Rs 45,724 per 10 gm on <keyword id="6355409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mcx">MCX</keyword> even as silver too was on strong wicket. The high gold price in international market continued for the fifth consecutive day. On <keyword id="57178" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="comex">Comex</keyword>, it rose to a seven-year high. On Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold prices for June was trading Rs 1515 (3.47 per cent) higher at Rs 45,237 per 10 gm in the morning compared with earlier session. <keyword id="103837" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Angel-Broking">Angel Broking</keyword> Deputy Vice President Anuj Gupta said that the high gold price was expected to continue on a high due to investors interest in precious metals in view of economic uncertainties. Silver was trading on the MCX for Rs 43,275 per kg, an increase of Rs 2052, in the first session. It opened at Rs 42,871 and went up to Rs 43,532. In the international future trades markets, gold was trading on Comex at 1,742.20 dollars to an ounce, which was the second highest since October 18 when it was 1,749.10 dollars. Kedia Advisory Director <keyword id="728300" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Kedia">Ajay Kedia</keyword> said the high price was due to the fact that gold was seen as a safe investment. Gold was selling for June contract on Comex at 1,711.70 dollars, an increase of 17.80, per ounce. It went up to 1,742 dollars, the highest for seven-and-a-half years. Silver for May contract was selling at 15.55 dollars per ounce, an increase of 2.56 dollars. Market experts said gold prices could touch 2,000 dollars. In Indian market, it could go up to Rs 50,000 per gm in the futures market. The strike took an ugly turn in West Bengal where violent clashes have been reported. Several schools and colleges were shut in South India and public transport disrupted. All national trade unions with the exception of the ones associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an affiliate of the Bharatiya Janata Party, are reportedly joining the strike. India is looking for support on increased trade in services, making sure the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+IT+sector&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian IT services </a>are not severely hit due to changing policies by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=donald+trump&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Donald Trump</a> administration. 
 
For starters, the Indian Government has suggested multiple entry visas for professionals meeting the host country's immigration criteria in a comprehensive proposal on cross-border movement of services. 
 India made these proposals in the draft legal text of the <keyword id="4225017" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trade-Facilitation-Agreement-for-Services">Trade Facilitation Agreement for Services</keyword> that it submitted to the WTO on February 23. 
 
As per reports, India has also suggested scrapping the social security contributions by professionals on short stints overseas. 
 
The proposal also calls for insurance portability and quicker visas for those seeking medical treatment. 
 
The proposal also suggests that countries shouldn't impose barriers on the flow of personal information on account of differing data protection measures.

Indian Govt is looking at multiple options to ensure IT sector is not severely hit due to protectionism. Here’s what it is doing

As many as ten central trade unions are going ahead with the one-day nationwide strike to protest against changes in labour laws even as BJP-backed BMS and <keyword id="224774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Front">National Front</keyword> of Indian Trade Unions have pulled out. Essential services are expected to be hit, as a result. 
 
These ten unions claim a combined membership of 15 crore workers in public as well as private sector enterprises including banks and insurance companies and they have decided to go ahead with the strike after their talks with a group of senior ministers earlier this month failed to yield desired results. 
 
Union leaders said the strike will affect the functioning of essential services like transport and supply of power, gas and oil, even as Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) claimed that power, oil and gas supplies will not be affected as a large number of public sector workers in these areas would not participate in the industrial action. 
 
As many as 12 central trade unions had given this strike call over a 12-points charter of demands, including withdrawal of the proposed anti-worker amendments in labour laws and stopping the disinvestment and privatisation of PSUs. 
 
BMS later pulled out saying the government needed to be given time to fulfil its promises on the basic demands. The National Front of Indian Trade Unions will also stay out. Speaking on behalf of other unions, <keyword id="679206" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="All-India-Trade-Union">All India Trade Union</keyword> Secretary D L Sachdev said that all ten central trade unions recognised by government will go on strike tomorrow. 
 
He claimed that "many state units of BMS will also join the strike". 
 
Earlier in the day, BMS General Secretary Virjesh Upadhyay told reporters that "a large number of public sector undertakings who are members of central trade unions are not going on strike tomorrow. 
 
"Thus, the services like power, oil and gas supply will not be affected. Big PSUs like NTPCBSE -0.95 %, NHPCBSE -2.42 % and PowerGrid will not observe strike tomorrow. Therefore, the power supply will not be affected". 
 
Upadhyay said the National Front of Indian Trade Unions has also decided not to go on strike and wants to give some time to government, at least till the Winter Session of the Parliament, for fulfilling its assurances like uniform minimum wages across the board and enhancing wage ceiling for bonus.

The Indian rupee just clocked its highest one-day gain since 2013 as global oil prices plummeted to a yearly low

Indian <keyword id="35090" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports">exports</keyword> can leverage the additional 25% import duty on commodities from <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> imposed by the American administration to their advantage. This essentially makes China’s products more expensive in the US, where the competitive price of India’s products can bring them in as substitutes. India’s leading exports to the US include pumps, passenger vehicles of 1500-3000 cc, parts of taps, parts of military aircrafts, valve bodies and parts of electrodiagnostic apparatus. Cumulatively, they accounted for $50 million of export trade in 2017. The industry chamber conducted an analysis which concluded that if India focuses on machinery, electrical equipments, vehicles and transport parts - exports can be increased with concerted efforts. Other Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia have already increased their exports to the US in recent years. Other recommendations The CCI also proposed that India should keep its competitive advantage in the sectors of textiles, footwear, mobile phones, toys and games in mind when dictating the strategic dialogue with the US. The chamber justified that such an endeavour would encourage the concerned growing industries in India. Even foreign direct investments have the potential to increase, but only if the government can instil confidence into foreign investments. It was only recently that India’s draft on the new e-commerce policy rolled out and ruffled a few feathers. Amazon Inc and <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> have even roped in the Trump administration to address their concerns to the government of India. And, it’s not only about the US. The CCI also recommended that India can expand its exports into China as well to capitalise on the hike in duties by both countries on imports exchanged between the two.

Indian products can be more competitive in the shadow of the US-China trade war

<keyword id="22003705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-traders" source="keywords">Indian traders</keyword> involved in <keyword id="22003703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="border-trade" source="keywords">border trade</keyword> with China through the <keyword id="22003704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lipulekh-pass" source="keywords">Lipulekh pass</keyword> in Pithoragarh district since 1992, have requested the central government to take up the issue of resumption of border trade through this route with Beijing. The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. "Out of over 1.5 crore trade annually, we have paid lakhs of rupees towards customs duty and other taxes to the government of India," said Rongkali. China announced in the year 2022 that it will build trans Himalayan multi-dimensional connectivity with Nepal to restructure the road and communication network with that country, Rongkali said. "As China has not given permission to open our passes along the Indo-China border, we have an apprehension that the mart made for Indian traders in Gakkhu town of Taklakot could be handed over to Nepalese traders," said Rongkali.

Indian traders demand resumption of border trade with China through Lipulekh pass

UK Ministers believe a trade deal with Delhi would provide British businesses with a head start in what is predicted to be the world's third-largest economy by 2050. It could also see Britain jump ahead as India does not have bilateral trade deals with either the US or the European Union. Ministers are said to be in agreement that a "generous" offer on visas could be the price for such a deal. One government figure told the Times: "The tech and digital space in India is still hugely protectionist and if we could open up even a slither of access it would put us ahead of the game." United Kingdom keen to ease immigration rules for Indians in exchange for trade access

Healthy buying was witnessed in the banking and FMCG stocks. At 10.50 a.m., Sensex was trading at 40,299.32, higher by 153.82 points or 0.38 per cent from its previous close of 40,145.50. It opened at 40,199.08 and has so far touched an intra-day high of 40,311.69 and a low of 39,978.39 points. The Nifty50 on <keyword id="163439" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-National-Stock-Exchange">the National Stock Exchange</keyword> was trading at 11,793.70, higher by 25.95 points or 0.22 per cent from its previous close. The top gainers on the Sensex so far were Kotak Mahindra Bank, Nestle India and NTPC, while the major losers were Infosys, ONGC and IndusInd Bank. Indian equity markets trade higher led by banking, consumer good stocks

New Delhi, Feb 20 () Global trade information provider Connect2India on Thursday said it has partnered with IRClass to provide verification, credibility and conformance check for MSMEs. Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) is an international ship classification society providing ship classification and certification as well as technical inspection services.Connect2India Founder Pawan Gupta said that the vision is to enable MSMEs to mitigate any regulatory and policy non-compliance coupled with business continuity and risk management. "This will not only help Indian MSMEs find global customers easily and arrange export/import orders at a much faster pace, but also help overseas SMEs build the confidence in their Indian trade counterpart with required technical certification and inspection in place as result of this collaboration," he said in a statement.While on one side the company is helping MSMEs understand nuances of overseas customers to make their trade safe, a constant worry has been to address the concerns regarding quality, conformance and responsible manufacturing. "A common concern was that global MSMEs were constantly looking for an independent and impartial verification of Indian MSMEs to help build trust and confidence to trade. In their attempt to address such concerns, Connect2India.com announced its partnership with IRClass," he added.Beginning March, he said his company will be adding IRClass's various offerings, including management system certification to international standards, second party audits on quality, environment, health and safety, product inspections and ratings on compliance levels extended for Indian and overseas MSMEs."With the global awareness on quality, environment, health and safety of industrial works, social accountability, it has become imperative to demonstrate these capabilities by any MSME wishes to expand its business and cater to international markets," Gupta said.
