TVS Motor recorded a sale of 26,971 electric scooters in November 2024, up from 19,155 scooters sold in November 2023, recording a growth of 40.8%. The company’s market share has increased from 21% in November 2023 to 23% in November 2024. On the other hand, Bajaj Auto has emerged as a close third, with 26,163 electric scooters sold in November 2024, up from 11,843 electric scooters sold in November 2023, recording a 120.92% year-on-year growth. The company commands a 22% market share in November 2024, up from 20% in November 2023. It's not just the second spot, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto are now inching close to Ola Electric and if the trend continues, may even dethrone the Bhavish Aggarwal-led company in the coming months. Ather Energy is in the fourth position, with 12,741 electric two-wheelers sold in November 2024, up from 9,342 scooters sold in November 2023, recording a 36.38% year-on-year growth. However, should Donald Trump become the President of the United States again (and decide to keep his word), Indian students might actually have an easier time getting a green card. In a surprising shift from his previous stance on immigration, former President Donald Trump has unveiled a bold plan to automatically grant green cards to foreign graduates of US colleges if re-elected. This announcement, made during a podcast interview with Silicon Valley investors, marks a departure from Trump's traditionally tough rhetoric on immigration. During the podcast hosted by Chamath Palihapitiya and others, Trump expressed his commitment to retaining talent educated in American universities. He argued passionately for granting green cards as a standard benefit for graduates, regardless of the institution they attended. Trump emphasised that this policy should encompass graduates from renowned institutions like Harvard and MIT as well as from junior colleges across the country. “It’s so sad when we lose people from Harvard, MIT, the greatest schools, and lesser schools that are phenomenal schools also,” Trump lamented on the All-In Podcast. “I think you should get, automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country and that includes junior colleges, too.” A green card affords its holder permanent residency rights in the United States and represents a crucial step towards citizenship. Trump's proposal, if enacted, could potentially introduce hundreds of thousands of new applicants for citizenship annually. Adding to the exodus of Indians who have already migrated to the US, over 200,000 Indian nationals are enrolled in institutes across the US in 2024, setting a new record. In fact, the significant surge in Indian students seeking education in the country between 2022-23 represented an unprecedented 35% increase from the year before that. The former US president specifically mentioned India and China, highlighting how talented individuals were unable to stay in the US because of current <keyword id="22151110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="visa-policies" source="keywords">visa policies</keyword>. We can see how this may show him in a favourable light for green card aspirants. And while we’re not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, it is important to remember that Trump has made his discriminatory nature very public in several instances. Immigration has been a hot topic in the US political arena for decades. However, in recent years, the political right and others have been more divided than ever on this issue. Republicans have been calling for stringent immigration policies and strict border protections. During his presidency, Trump advocated for stringent immigration policies, including the largest deportation campaign in US history, aimed at undocumented migrants, and building a wall on the southern borders of the country. Trump intensified restrictions on legal immigration amid the pandemic and his final year in office. He proposed halting all immigration to the US and deporting foreign students who didn't attend some in-person classes. A month before the 2020 election, Trump once more moved to tighten regulations on the <keyword id="20773661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="H-1B-visa" source="keywords">H-1B visa</keyword> program. He has also criticised the H-1B visa program, which tech companies favour for hiring foreign skilled workers, as detrimental to American prosperity. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa allowing US firms to employ foreigners in specialised occupations requiring theoretical or technical expertise. At a recent campaign event in Wisconsin, Trump criticised Biden's immigration policies, particularly lambasting a new program allowing undocumented spouses of US citizens to apply for permanent residence without leaving the country. Trump characterised immigration under Biden as an "invasion" and argued against discussing amnesty, urging instead for measures to halt what he perceives as an influx of unauthorised migrants. Estimates from the Department of Homeland Security suggest that approximately 11 million migrants currently reside in the US without authorization, a statistic that has been central to Trump's arguments against leniency in immigration policy.

Swiggy report says GenZ contributes to 40% of food consumption; highlights recent trend of binge-eating

London: Universities and student groups on Tuesday urgently lobbied British Prime Minister <keyword id="19906889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishi-Sunak" source="keywords">Rishi Sunak</keyword> to safeguard the country's <keyword id="21659184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="post-study-visa" source="keywords">post-study visa</keyword> offer, which has been dominated by Indians to gain work experience for around two years at the end of their university degree. Amid reports that Sunak is considering either restricting or ending the <keyword id="20616105" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Graduate-Route" source="keywords">Graduate Route</keyword> to curtail soaring migration statistics ahead of a general election, a group of nearly 30 university vice-chancellors and the <keyword id="21760521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-indian-students-and-alumni-association" source="keywords">National Indian Students and Alumni Association</keyword> (NISAU) UK have issued detailed letters of appeal to 10 Downing Street. They list a series of factors in favour of keeping the Graduate visa scheme unchanged, including the benefits that international students bring to the UK economy in a competitive global higher education marketplace. "Modelling by consultancy London Economics shows that a single cohort has a net economic benefit of GBP 37 billion to the UK economy; as well as through the soft power that Britain's international graduates generate for the country over time, including through furthering ties of trade and diplomacy," reads the NISAU UK letter addressed to Sunak. "Indeed, 70 per cent of <keyword id="19971660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-students" source="keywords">Indian students</keyword> have told us that the ability to gain meaningful work experience is a critical element in their decision to choose between competing international destinations, of which the UK is one... the Graduate Route allows the opportunity to gain this work experience for a temporary period. It is non-extendable and does not count towards permanent settlement. This means that neither students nor Graduate visa holders should be considered 'immigrants' in the context of the long-term picture of migration," it notes. Their appeal comes a week after the influential <keyword id="20609895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Migration-Advisory-Committee" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Migration Advisory Committee" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Migration Advisory Committee">Migration Advisory Committee</keyword> (MAC) advised the government to let the scheme continue as it found no abuse of this post-study work offer. It also confirmed that Indians topped its tally, accounting for 89,200 visas between 2021 and 2023, or 42 per cent of the overall grants, and were likely to be "most affected by any restriction on the Graduate Route". In their letter to Sunak, universities in the north of England — from Sunderland to Sheffield, Leeds to Lancaster, Liverpool to Teesside, Bradford to Huddersfield, and York to Newcastle — said they will all be harmed by the removal or reduction of this visa as it is an "intrinsic part of the educational offer that has made the UK so attractive to brilliant students from all around the world". "The Graduate Visa Route is regarded by students in key markets like India as an integral part of their educational experience. The MAC review made clear that the removal of this route would make the UK less attractive and thus would cause considerable financial detriment to universities around the country," reads their joint letter. "International student tuition fee income has long cross-subsidised underfunded research and has increasingly become critical to cross-subsidise the teaching of UK undergraduate students because of the frozen tuition fee. Universities cannot continue to absorb the costs of teaching UK undergraduates without some form of alternative funding source," they caution. On top of their visa fees, international students who find work and start businesses contribute billions of pounds in income tax, national insurance and VAT annually. The university chiefs point out that they are also usually net contributors to the National Health Service (NHS) through the NHS surcharge. The Russell Group of the UK's leading universities issued its appeal over the weekend, with CEO Tim Bradshaw warning that there has already been a 10 per cent decline in international applications for post-graduate courses starting this September in the wake of the clampdown on students being able to bring dependant family members. "A further restriction on international students would not only be unnecessary — as numbers are already falling — but also damaging, resulting in less spending in local communities, fewer opportunities for domestic students and less UK research," he noted in a letter to Sunak. Members of his own Cabinet are believed to be opposed to any changes to the Graduate scheme, but the British Prime Minister is having to balance pressures from the right of the governing Conservatives who are single-minded in their demands to curb all forms of legal as well as illegal migration levels ahead of an election later this year.

In the season beginning October and lasting till December, companies will add 20% more to their current workforce base, and the pay scale will be 8%-10% higher than last year, according to human resources analytics firm TeamLease. Also, it expects India to have 372 million online shoppers by the end of 2022. “Overall five lakh additional jobs are expected to be added during India’s festive season. In the FMCG sector, the demand for Feet-on-Street salespeople (FOS) will be the highest. Sales during the festive period generate huge revenue for e-commerce companies. According to wealth management firm Bernstein’s report, GMVs (gross merchandise value) of e-commerce firms during October sales reached $9.3 billion in 2021, a jump of 26% year on year. The New Shop, an omnichannel e-commerce company largely operating in North and West India, plans to have 1,000 stores in India by 2025 and is on a hiring spree as well. The company is a 24-hour convenience store that sells FMCG products. “The festive season has always been big for the retail industry. On an average, the consumer’s discretionary spending increases during festivals, which leads to more customers and gift giving. Hiring will increase by 10-15% and store operations are expected to rise 70-100%,” Aastha Almast, co-founder of The New Shop, told Business Insider India. The New Shop wants to focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and is expecting to hire over 200 employees in the cities of UP, Haryana and MP. TeamLease’s Thomas said that although there is an increase in temp hiring during the festive season, it is crucial that the e-commerce companies absorb these workers into the workforce permamently after the festivities are over. The Fitch team forecasts it to grow faster at 6.7% year-on-year. Moreso, inflation worries are easing, allowing households to splurge more. Inflation is expected to hover around 4.7% in the next year whereas 2023’s inflation numbers are pegged at 5.7%. “Inflation is moderating and strong showings in real income growth for Indian consumers will give greater propensity for household spending growth,” BMI says. Moreover, India’s unemployment rate is also stable over the year, at 7%, boosting the confidence in spending habits. Lower debt levels Unlike most nations, Indian <keyword id="1912236" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="household-debt" source="Orion">household debt</keyword> has been steadily decreasing, to 36.5% as of Q1 2023. This decrease is due to the recovery from the acceleration seen in household debt during the Covid-19 pandemic period, where households took on debt to support themselves. “These levels are still relatively low and pose little threat to our consumer outlook for the market,” BMI adds. As household debt decreases, a part of the disposable income which is used to service debt can be used for purchases. However, if the interest rates go up in the next three years, higher income households might have to allocate disposable income towards debt financing, placing downward pressure on consumer spending going forward. ‘Confident’ Indians might splurge on big-ticket items in 2024

The production sector was the main contributor to negative GDP growth in August, falling by 1.8 per cent, and services also fell by 0.1 per cent, according to the ONS. Output in consumer-facing services dropped by 1.8 per cent in August, and the biggest negative drivers were sports activities, and amusement and recreation activities. Construction grew by 0.4 per cent in August, the ONS said. The surprise GDP drop has echoed the Bank of England's (BoE) earlier prediction. In late September, the central bank staff expected GDP to fall by 0.1 per cent in the third quarter. The August figure suggests that the country has got "a big step closer to recession," commented Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist of Pantheon Macroeconomics, adding that "August's drop in GDP likely marks the start of a downward trend that will continue deep into next year." The GDP drop also fueled concerns among businesses. "The UK economy retreated in August. And business surveys, including our own, have turned sharply downwards since the summer and there is an increasing chance that the UK entered a downturn during the third quarter," Ben Jones, an economist from the Confederation of British Industry, said. Calling the August GDP figure "a warning sign that the economy was already stalling before the market turmoil of recent weeks," David Bharier, head of research at the British Chambers of Commerce, said business confidence is falling at an alarming rate. On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in its World Economic Outlook that a significant slowdown is projected in the UK. "Growth is forecast at 3.6 per cent in 2022 and 0.3 per cent in 2023 as high inflation reduces purchasing power and tighter monetary policy takes a toll on consumer spending and business investment," the report said. Recession fears mount as UK GDP falls 0.3% in Aug

By Aditi Khanna London, May 7 () Indians are among the ethnicities that face a statistically higher risk of death involving COVID-19 compared with those of white ethnicity, according to latest UK statistics on the coronavirus pandemic released on Thursday.The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found in its COVID-19 related deaths by ethnic group analysis for England and Wales between March 2 and April 10 that 483 Indian-origin people died from the deadly virus, with a majority falling within the over 65 category at 401."This provisional analysis has shown that the risk of death involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) among some ethnic groups is significantly higher than that of those of white ethnicity," the ONS said."People of Bangladeshi and Pakistani, Indian, and mixed ethnicities also had statistically significant raised risk of death involving COVID-19 compared with those of white ethnicity," it said.Males in the Bangladeshi and Pakistani ethnic group were found to be 1.8 times more likely to have a COVID-19-related death than white males, when age and other socio-demographic characteristics and measures of self-reported health and disability were taken into account; for females, the figure was 1.6 times more likely.And, when taking into account age in the analysis, black males were found 4.2 times more likely to die from a COVID-19-related death and black females 4.3 times more likely than white ethnicity males and females."These results show that the difference between ethnic groups in COVID-19 mortality is partly a result of socio-economic disadvantage and other circumstances, but a remaining part of the difference has not yet been explained," the ONS concluded.As ethnicity is not recorded on the death certificate in England and Wales, to undertake this analysis the ONS said deaths involving COVID-19 were linked to the last Census held in 2011 to ascertain the self-reported ethnicity of the deceased and otherdemographic factors. The figures came as London Mayor Sadiq Khan is leading calls for ethnicity to be recorded on death certificates to expose the disproportionate effect that COVID-19 and other illnesses are having on the UK capital's black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities."We need to fully expose the effect it is having on our communities, have honest conversations about what is behind it, why it is happening, and work hard to tackle these problems. That's why I'm calling for greater transparency and bringing city leaders together to see what we can do," said the Pakistani-origin mayor.The UK government had launched a Public Health England led review into the factors behind the ethnic disparity in COVID-19 deaths last month, with the Opposition Labour Party conducting its own research on the issue.The Research and Innovation Forum of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) had found in a survey that medical and healthcare professionals from Indian and minority ethnic backgrounds similarly fall into a higher risk category of dying from the novel coronavirus in the UK.
