For a country struggling to fight brutal poverty, internal conflicts, political instability, and bureaucratic inefficiency, the 1990s was a breath of fresh air. The economy was liberalised, the IT industry started booming, a telecom revolution was underway, a successful nuclear test was conducted, and the emergence of strong regional parties gave voice to the politically weak sections. But on May 3, 1999, as Pakistani intrusion was reported at the Kargil borders, India was on the cusp of losing a decade-long progress to an unprovoked war. Over the next three months, the Indian <keyword id="19903970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="armed-forces" source="keywords">armed forces</keyword> fought with all might not just to defend the borders, but to show to the world that its preference for peace is not a sign of weakness. <keyword id="21429298" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kargil-Vijay-Diwas" source="keywords">Kargil Vijay Diwas</keyword>, commemorated annually on July 26th, stands as a testament to India's indomitable spirit and the unwavering courage of its armed forces. This day marks the culmination of the <keyword id="20143432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kargil-War" source="keywords">Kargil War</keyword>, a conflict that tested the nation's mettle and forged a legacy of heroism. Addressing the 25th celebrations of the Kargil War victory, <keyword id="6354814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-narendra-modi" source="Orion">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> said that the Kargil War win is neither the victory of any government in power nor of any political group, it is the heritage and the victory of 140 crore people of India. <h2>The genesis</h2>Despite signing the Lahore Declaration in February 1999 for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, a covert infiltration by Pakistani troops into the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir in May 1999 triggered a crisis. Disguised as militants, they occupied strategic positions along the Line of Control (LoC), aiming to disrupt the Kashmir-Ladakh link. The <keyword id="19908736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Indian Army" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Indian Army">Indian Army</keyword>, upon discovering the intrusion from local shepherds, launched Operation Vijay, a counter-offensive to reclaim the occupied heights. <h2>Battling against nature and the enemy</h2>The Kargil War was a gruelling ordeal, fought in the unforgiving Himalayan terrain. Soldiers battled not only the enemy but also the harsh, high-altitude conditions. The covert movement of the Pak army helped them position themselves at strategically advantageous, high-altitude positions. As temperatures plummeted and oxygen levels dwindled, the rugged mountains posed immense logistical challenges to the ground forces. Yet, the Indian Army, driven by patriotism and a relentless determination to protect the nation's sovereignty, pressed on. <h2>Heroes of the Kargil War</h2>The Kargil War produced a pantheon of heroes whose bravery continues to inspire generations. Captain <keyword id="20211435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikram-batra" source="keywords">Vikram Batra</keyword>, with his iconic battle cry "Yeh Dil Mange More," led his troops to capture Point 4875, a pivotal victory. Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, displaying exceptional courage, made the supreme sacrifice while defending his post. The war also highlighted the sacrifices made by the families of the martyrs, whose courage and resilience were equally inspiring. <h2>A legacy of valour</h2>Kargil <keyword id="21992554" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-diwas" source="keywords">Vijay Diwas</keyword> is more than just a commemoration; it is a reaffirmation of India's commitment to peace and security. The sacrifices made by the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War will forever be etched in the nation's memory. Their unwavering courage and determination continue to inspire future generations to serve the country with dedication and honour. As India celebrates the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas today, it is essential to remember the heroes who laid down their lives for the nation. Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten by a country on its path to glory on a global stage. <h2>A continued tragedy</h2>The Kargil War left behind a deadly legacy along with long-term trauma among the local residents and the defence personnel who fought valiantly. As per a TOI report, unexploded bombs scattered across the region continue to pose a significant threat to the local population. In 2023 — 24 years after the tragic war — a total of around 336 such unexploded bombs were reportedly neutralised by the Army. Residents live in constant fear of accidental detonations, especially during construction or excavation work. These incidents have resulted in multiple casualties in the past several years, including the tragic death of a young child. Despite the passage of 25 years, the Army remains actively engaged in defusing these dangerous remnants of war. Kargil Vijay Diwas: A tale of valour and sacrifice

New Delhi, For the first time, <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> on Friday honoured its four People's Liberation Army soldiers killed and one injured during clashes with <keyword id="6354416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> troops at <keyword id="9241086" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword>, Chinese state media said. The China Global Television Network (CGTN), Chinese state media, claimed that five PLA soldiers were honoured with <keyword id="2625544" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="honorary-title">honorary title</keyword> and first-class merit citation. It stated that four Chinese soldiers, who were killed during a border confrontation in June 2020, were posthumously awarded honorary titles and first-class merit citations, the <keyword id="136838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Military-Commission">Central Military Commission</keyword> (CMC) announced on Friday. The CMC unveiled names and stories of the martyrs for the first time to commemorate their sacrifice for defending national sovereignty and <keyword id="82986" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="territory">territory</keyword>, the state media said. "Chen Hongjun was awarded the honorary title of "hero" for defending national territory. Chen Xiangrong, Xiao Siyuan and Wang Zhuoran were awarded first-class merit citations," it stated. Qi Fabao, a colonel who led the soldiers, was seriously injured during the clashes. "Qi was conferred with the honorary title of hero colonel," it stated. This comes when Indian Army Commander Lieutenant General Y.C. Joshi quoted a Russia agency which claimed that 45 Chinese PLA soldiers were killed on June 15, 2020. India had lost 20 soldiers during the clash and China never declared the numbers of its soldiers killed. China honours martyrs from Galwan Valley clash for the very first time

How many of us personally thank <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian soldiers</a> for protecting our Indian borders, or how many of us thank their families and acknowledge them whenever a soldier sacrifices his life for the country? 
 
This security guard, who works with a firm in Surat, has been thanking the families of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=martyrs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">martyred soldiers</a> for 17 years now. 
 
Meet 37-year-old Jitendra; he has written around 3,000 postcards to families of soldiers who laid their lives, fighting with the enemies. 
 “I have been writing these letters since the <keyword id="152249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kargil-war">Kargil war</keyword>. I think that being in the army is a tough job, and it is the country’s duty to respect those martyrs who sacrifice their lives for us. There are many people who have been living under the dark clouds of grief after losing their loved ones, and we should fulfil our moral duties towards those families,” he told The Better India. 
 
Jitendra, a resident of Kutkheda village in Rajasthan, was inspired to write and pay respect to those families as his father was also a soldier with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Army</a>. 
 
 
Jitendra wanted to join the army as well, but could not do so. 
 
“My family thinks I am crazy to be doing something that gives no returns in spite of coming from a middle class background, but I am determined and will not leave this path till the end,” he told The Better India. 
 
Jitendra has details of nearly 20,000 martyrs, with their names, numbers, unit details, addresses, etc, which he picked up from local newspapers of martyr’s home towns.

Meet Jitendra-a security guard who spent 17 yrs writing letters to families of martyred soldiers

In what could be called nothing but a miracle at the hands of the supreme power, an Indian solider has been pulled out alive after he was buried in the snow following the <keyword id="1002690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siachen-Avalanche">Siachen avalanche</keyword>. 
 <keyword id="3238415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lance-Naik-Hanamanthappa-Koppad">Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad</keyword> was buried under 25 feet of snow for six days. Even as his situation remains critical, the rescue teams are trying hard to save his life. 
 
Koppad belongs to the Dharwad District of Karnataka, and it’s unbelievable that his pulse was running even after he was buried in snow, at a temperature of -45 degrees, for six days. 
 
"We are trying our best to evacuate him as soon as possible to RnR hospital," an official concerned told ET. 
 The avalanche that struck a post at 19000 feet in Northern <keyword id="42770" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siachen">Siachen</keyword> was thought to have killed 10 soldiers of the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>, out of which Koppad has been found alive, and four bodies have been pulled out from under the snow.

Martyr Squadron Leader Samir Abrol’s widow is all set to join the Air Force

The effect of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=uri+attack&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Uri attack</a> which claimed the lives of 18 unsuspecting jawans are yet to leave the minds and hearts of the people of <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. 
 Touted as one of the worst attacks on the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian army</keyword>, it has left numerous mourning families in its wake. 
 
But, as luck would have it, one businessman from Gujarat is trying to bring about some silver lining while the entire country adapts to the loss. 
 Fourty-seven-year-old <keyword id="843067" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahesh-Savani">Mahesh Savani</keyword>, a businessman from the Surat district from Gujarat is offering to sponsor the education of the children of all the 18 Uri martyrs. 
 
 
 Elaborating on what made him take this decision, Savani said, "I saw a girl of our Indian soldier crying on the television saying that her father had told her to study hard and become successful. At that very moment, I decided to sponsor the children of the martyrs killed in <keyword id="6439316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="URI-ATTACK">Uri attack</keyword>," 
 His realty group PP Savani is going to offer free education for all these children. The group is also open to providing free accommodation to the children who wish to study with the <keyword id="3676647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="pp-savani-international-school">PP Savani International School</keyword>. 
 
This is not the first time Savani has been involved in such noble work. In the past, he has also organised mass weddings for over 100 underprivileged girls.

This Gujarat businessman wants to offer education to children of all 18 Uri Martyrs

Three days after the country rejoiced on hearing that one of the ten soldiers who were buried under snow after an avalanche hit their <keyword id="42770" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siachen">Siachen</keyword> post has been rescued alive, the moment of grief has left everyone in shock. 
 
Lance Naik ​Hanumanthappa Koppad breathed his last in the Army Hospital, Delhi, as all attempts to revive the Siachen braveheart from coma failed. The soldier suffered acute oxygen deprivation to the brain and pneumonia in both lungs. 
 
Talking of the rescue operation that brought this momentary joy, it could only be termed a miracle that rescue teams were able to establish a radio contact with one of the ten soldiers of Indian Army, who were trapped after a massive ice-wall avalanche hit their 19,600 feet high Army post in Siachen Glacier on February 3. 
 
This radio signal prompted the rescue teams to start their rescue operation along with sniffer dogs, earth-penetrating radars, radio signal detectors, and specialised ice-cutting and boring equipments, with double efforts. 
 
"After radio contact was established on February 4, rescue operations were stalled on February 5 due to snow storms and blizzards. Soldiers deployed at such posts keep their radio sets switched on to ensure they can be traced by signals in case of a mishap," an officer told TOI. 
 
The teams were only waiting for the weather to be slightly clear. As soon as that happened, over 150 rescue personnel resumed their efforts so that they could locate the "general area" where they expected the soldiers to have got buried. 
 
Nine bodies were extricated around 7.30pm on Monday, and Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad was taken out alive from under 35 feet of snow, his condition being very critical. 
 
Names of the martyrs who did the supreme sacrifice for the nation are Subedar Nagesha, Havildar Elumalai, Lance Havildar S Kumar, Lance Naik Sudheesh, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad , sepoys Mahesha PN, Ganesan G, Rama Moorthy N, Mustaq Ahmed and nursing assistant Suryawanshi SV, all belonging to the 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment.

Siachen braveheart breathes his last in Delhi; here is how he was rescued from under 35 feet of snow

Security forces on Monday killed a terrorist and injured another during a gun battle, which is going on for the past nine hours in Punjab’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gurdaspur+">Gurdaspur</a> district. Four heavily armed militants wearing army uniform went on a rampage attacking a bus, a health centre and a police station in the morning. 
 
Punjab Police SP (detective) Baljeet Singh was martyred while fighting the terrorists, who struck the bus in Dinanagar at around 5 a.m., injuring four passengers. 
 According to police, the militants also shot dead a roadside vendor near Dinanagar bypass before entering the <keyword id="2970347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dinanagar-police">Dinanagar police</keyword> station where they severely injured five policemen. 
 
Meanwhile, Home Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Rajnath+Singh+">Rajnath Singh</a> has said that the country will give a befitting reply. "We will not be the first to strike, but if we are hit, we will give a befitting reply. We want peace with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan+Navy">Pakistan</a>, but not at the cost of national honour," he said. 
 
The Home Minister also said that he would make a statement over the attack in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Parliament+">Parliament</a> tomorrow after the Opposition created a ruckus in <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="parliament">Parliament</keyword>. 
 
 In a related development, five live bombs were found on Amritsar-Pathankot railway track and the train services on the route have been suspended. 
 The Home Ministry said that an alert has been sounded along the border with <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>. Army was called in from Pathankot and the whole area has been cordoned off. 
 
Quick Reaction Teams, bomb squads and a heavy police contingent including senior officers have been deployed in the area which lies close to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indo-Pakistan+">Indo-Pakistan</a> border. 
 
According to official sources, the forces' strategy was to minimise casualties and to capture some of the terrorists alive. 
 
Though soldiers carrying shoulder-fired rocket launchers and other artillery were present at the spot, security agencies had opted not to use these till absolutely necessary.
