The year of 2022 could be a watershed year for <keyword id="143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bollywood" source="Orion">Bollywood</keyword>. For the very first time, a lead character in the movie is transgender in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui starring Ayushmann Khurana and Vaani Kapoor. Called a conversation starter on transgenders, the movie was lauded by many. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div> Then there was a formulaic Badhai Do starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar - which is a lesbian and a gay man married to each other, due to family pressure. Increasing roles but not being cast While Bollywood might seem to be taking one step forward, it has brought out many issues – be it roles for the community and of course, casting transgenders for the roles. The apathy towards LGBTQ+ community is also affecting artists who intend to find their place in the showbiz which has been expanding thanks to the number of web series and more under production. Yet, it’s falling short of people to accommodate them. Transgender actor Sushant Divgikar criticises the casting of cisgender actors as transgender characters in Bollywood. This comes as Bollywood is making several movies on gender diversity but tends to cast popular actors instead of the ‘right’ fit. “If a transgender person is not allowed to play a transgender character on screen in a film, they are not allowed to play a man in a film and transgender people are not allowed to play women in a film so what do transgender artists play? transgender trees in the back?” asks Divgikar on his Instagram. Divgikar is quite vocal about challenges faced by <keyword id="1218847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lgbtq-community" source="Orion">LGBTQ community</keyword> in society and Bollywood. Sharing another such experience on gender disparity on Youtube, Divgikar revealed that they were auditioning for a toothpaste ad when the casting director told them even before they entered the room, “You are too gay for this advertisement.” Yet, not all is lost. A few actors from the community have found their standing. Jim Sarbh, a popular actor who played a key role in the superhit movie Padmavaat, also plays a role in Made in India. In the popular Amazon Prime Video series, he plays a straight character. “It was really difficult playing a heterosexual male so that was a first big challenge that I had to overcome, what cultural significance would be here and whether people will accept it,” <a href="https://www.facebook.com/YesWeExistIndia/videos/1246256258883966/">he said sarcastically in an interview </a>as he believes there is still socia stigma around the community. While the number of shows and movies portraying queer connection are increasing – large numbers are played by A-list actors like Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ayushmann Khurana, Manoj Bajpai and more. ‘It was the most challenging film because I have never done such a character before’, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/bollywood/aligarh-was-most-challenging-film-for-me-manoj-bajpayee/">said Manoj about playing a gay character </a>that was named Siras in Aligarh. India has a long way to go in terms of gender issues and is still struggling to get many aspects like casting and treatment of women. Case in point is the controversy created by Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh which was criticized for toxic masculinity. Thappad was touted to be a response to Kabir Singh. “Everyone should do one thing they feel will take us towards gender equality – and getting rid of stereotypes and conditioning will surely be a step in that direction,” said Tapsee Pannu who played the protagonist in the movie. Fueling the fear of recession are several factors – the Russia-Ukraine war, soaring inflation, rising borrowing costs, and crude oil prices on a boil. Several economists have predicted that the US, the world’s largest economy, could slip into recession in the near term. With rapidly slowing growth momentum and a commitment by the US Fed to tame inflation, a mild recession in the December quarter this year is now more likely than not, according to a report by Nomura. “Financial conditions are likely to tighten further, consumers are experiencing a significant negative sentiment shock, energy and food supply disruptions have worsened and the outlook for foreign growth has deteriorated. All these factors will likely contribute to the expected downturn,” said analysts at Nomura. Economists at Goldman Sachs now believe that the chances of the US entering a recession over the next year have now doubled to 30% from 15% earlier. Morgan Stanley chief James Gorman told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/bank-americas-cfo-says-no-sign-recession-credit-deterioration-2022-06-13/">Reuters</a> there is a 50% chance the US economy will enter a recession. Recession is typically defined as a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and lasts more than a few months. Currently, prices of gas and food are at record high in the US resulting in 40 year high inflation. A <keyword id="58692" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-recession" source="Orion">US recession</keyword> could prove to be a boon for the Indian economy Crude oil prices have seen a moderation in the last three months as Brent crude oil has been currently trading at around $115, as against its recent peak of around $128. The cooling down in crude oil prices is attributed to fears of a possible recession in the global economy following aggressive monetary policy tightening by central banks around the world. Adding to it, ongoing Covid-led lockdowns in parts of China also caused a fall in prices. These factors have helped cool down the demand for energy, and with the demand falling, prices have also started to come down. For a country like India which imports 80% of its crude oil needs, this is a positive development. “If there is a slowdown in the US commodity prices might come down significantly. In other ways, India is going to get benefitted if there is a correction in crude oil commodity prices because the US is one of the biggest consumers of fuel,” Kranthi Bathini, director of equity strategy at WealthMills Securities, told Business Insider India. 2022 recession might not be as bad as 2008’s Despite the fear of recession becoming more commonplace now, analysts believe it won’t be as bad as the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. “The recession might not be that critical but a minor one which might see some increase in the unemployment rate, sluggish demand, falling markets and general drop in prices of commodities which saw huge price appreciation recently,” Manoj Dalmia, founder and director at Proficient Equities told Business Insider. Echoing similar sentiments, Bathini said, “This time, it’s completely different as inflation is at a historical high zone. So policy makers in the US want to pull down the economy and bring inflation under control,” he added. A US recession could provide Indian economy the relief it needs

And that was not all. He also said that “regulatory provisions will rely more 14 on self-declaration. We will also introduce anti-camcording provisions in the Cinematograph Act to control the menace of piracy.” Goyal also highlighted how the government pushed for a lower tax on cinema tickets through the GST (goods and services tax) Council. Let’s look at how the relationship has evolved in the last four and a half years. It’s showtime Modi government’s affair with Bollywood is a recent phenomenon. In fact, in the first three years of the regime, the government’s relationship with the film industry was rather tenuous. One of the government’s appointees, the former chairman of the film certification board, the CBFC, Pahlaj Nihalani was a big thorn in the flesh for the country’s film industry. He infamously took the moral high ground and censored multiple films, most famously Anurag Kashyap’s Udta Punjab. Even after the Bombay High Court <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/movies/bollywood/story/udta-punjab-latest-dveelopment-cbfc-bombay-high-court-verdict-censor-board-13840-2016-06-13">struck down</a> the CBFC demand for cuts in the film, Nihalani <a href="https://www.huffingtonpost.in/2016/06/14/pahlaj-nihalani_n_10451088.html">said</a> , “the door for films with obscene and vulgar content.” Despite the fans’ anger and the industry’s anguish, he remained the chief of the ‘censor board’, as CBFC is colloquially known in India, for 2 years, while <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP-l_JY2Vng">he intermittently flattered the </a>government and the prime minister. Not just the working professionals in Bollywood, the government faced a severe backlash from the students of cinema too. In 2017, Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment as the chairman of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), triggered <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/the-problem-with-gajendra-chauhan/">a huge uproar</a>. Students <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/ftii-students-call-off-hunger-strike-to-attend-classes-wont-engage-with-govt/">went on a protest</a>, that even turned violent for a bit, saying Chauhan was qualified to lead a reputed institution like the FTII. The students, who alleged that Chauhan’s appointment was a political move and not based on merit, found vindication when Chauhan <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/im-a-bjp-soldier-will-do-whatever-is-assigned-gajendra-chauhan-4553227/">said</a>, “I am a BJP soldier and I will do whatever is assigned any duty assigned to me.” However, things turned for the better in 2018. Firstly, the new CBFC chief, the accomplished writer and lyricist Prasoon Joshi, has cannily handled the two divergent groups-- the government and the film industry. Secondly, some members of the film industry also served the government well. Two films released towards the end of 2018 were just what prime minister wanted, months before seeking re-election. The first film, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/accidental-prime-minister-is-at-the-epicenter-of-a-massive-political-controversy-in-india-just-with-its-trailer-launch/articleshow/67286606.cms">The Accidental Prime Minister</a>, was based on a revelatory book about all the corruption scandals of the previous government led by the Congress. It was the country’s first biopic made on a living prime minister, and showed the Manmohan Singh administration in poor light, and deservedly so, as many would argue. However, that government was voted out in 2014. PwC India acquires salesforce consulting firm, Venerate Solution

<ul><li>PVR and Inox have gained in footfalls due to the success of <keyword id="13105" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="south-movies" source="Orion">South movies</keyword>, but Bollywood is their bread and butter.</li><li>In the two quarters, only three <keyword id="24889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bollywood-films" source="Orion">Bollywood films</keyword> delivered a strong show bringing down the share in hit movies to a mere 10% from 40% earlier.</li><li>As Bollywood continues to disappoint, multiplex ad revenue will be hit badly.</li></ul>Any other pre-pandemic year, a movie from A-list Bollywood stars like Shahrukh Khan, <keyword id="6354583" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salman-khan" source="Orion">Salman Khan</keyword>, <keyword id="6355923" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aamir-khan" source="Orion">Aamir Khan</keyword>, Akshay Kumar or Ajay Devgn would have meant a decent opening at the theatres. But there is no such assurance for screen owners like Inox and PVR which have just received a go ahead for their merger. “In the past, big stars have been able to attract audiences to theatres en masse, given their strong legacy. However, changing preferences of audiences have now resulted in content being the primary focus. These highly touted <keyword id="17663" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="superstars" source="Orion">superstars</keyword> are no longer able to attract audiences based on just their brand names,” said a report by Emkay Research on media and entertainment. Two movies of new-age star Ranveer Singh - 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar too failed at the box office, in addition to Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraaj and Bacchan Pandey. Multiplexes need Bollywood - can’t bank on the South In spite of the good performance of South movies, the box office collections of theatres bank on Bollywood. It contributes to around 60% of total collections. Bollywood movies were also the highest-grossing movies in 11 of the 16 pre-Covid quarters. But the last two quarters changed this dynamic. Only three films delivered a strong show, which means Bollywood share in hit movies went down from 40% earlier to a mere 10%. As Bollywood continues to disappoint, multiplex ad revenue will be hit badly. The last two quarters saw a stellar performance by two regional films - RRR and KGF Chapter 2. Their respective strong collections could be attributed to S S Rajamouli’s fame after Bahubali and the success of the first part of the movie. But a deeper change seems to be afoot. “The performance of movies like Pushpa in the Hindi hinterland indicates that customer preferences are evolving. By Mona Parthsarathi New Delhi, Apr 19 () The coronavirus outbreak has brought the global entertainment industry to a standstill, but veteran singer Asha Bhosle says she is hopeful that once normalcy returns showbiz will also recuperate.The 86-year-old playback singer said India is an entertainment loving nation and after the lockdown people will definitely return to movie theatres and music concerts. "This pandemic will affect every industry to an extent. But I feel that once this is over, the entertainment industry will bounce back strongly. Don't forget that we love entertainment and after being in our homes for many weeks, there may be a tendency to go out to the cinemas, attend music concerts."Humans are social animal and we have survived many calamities in the past. We shall do so again," Asha told Bhasha in an interview.Coronavirus, which originated in central China in December, is believed to have infected more than 2.3 million people worldwide. While most recover, at least 155,000 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.In India, death toll due to COVID-19 has risen to 507 and number of cases have climbed to 15,712.The singer said in her lifetime she has witnessed several epidemics like TB , cholera, smallpox, plague, SARS, MERS and the current situation across the world has revived those painful memories."I am 86 and have seen many epidemics. We did not have a cure for them or there just weren't enough medical facilities. We survived by homemade remedies. Plague used to wipe out entire villages. I remember my parents evacuating us from affected parts of the country and moving us to safer zones. It was social distancing at that time too."She said while there were no fancy words like "social distancing" and "lockdown" during those times, it was the same principle which saved them."I have also seen several wars including World War II. There was food rationing and the situation was bad but we adapted and survived those days too. This pandemic is bad because the entire world has been affected," the singer added. Asha believes the only way to win the fight against the deadly virus is to follow the guidelines set by the health experts and the government."This virus is different and more deadly and it requires precautions like self- isolation, social distancing and cleanliness. I am happy with the way Indian government is dealing with the crisis. Considering the population and domestic mobility, it would have been worst," she said.The music icon also lauded celebrities for creating awareness about coronavirus and believes their efforts are giving fruitful results."People look up to celebrities and it is our duty towards them and our country. Almost all celebrities have attempted to spread awareness about the virus and I believe this has helped a lot in making people aware and follow the guidelines."Asha was also part of Sangeet Setu, a series of virtual concerts to support PM-Cares relief fund set up to fight COVID -19. She said it was a unique experience to perform without any technical support."Sangeet Setu was unique initiative because performances came from the heart. Without studio facilities or professional recording equipment, without musicians, sound engineers. I recorded my performances on a phone and uploaded it," she said.The singer, who has been in the industry for over six decades, has also recorded for another initiative to bring people of the country together in these times of crisis."It is to bring together the people of India in this time of need and bring about our sense of pride and nationalism in this great ancient country of ours. As per PM-Cares fund directives I also recorded an appeal for people to donate generously to the fund."With all her recordings and concerts being cancelled, Asha said she is happy to spend time with her family during the lockdown."All my recordings and concerts have been cancelled but I don't dwell on what has been lost. Our culture teaches us to accept and adapt to any situation."So, I am adapting too. I look at the positive side of even this horrid situation, example the entire family is together enjoying the simple things in life," she said.The singer said the pandemic has taught people the importance of human bond and also made them aware of fragility of life."I'm calling and receiving calls from friends who I haven't heard from for many years. I have lost a dear friend in the UK and it drives home the point of how fragile life can be," Asha said."I take each day as it comes and make the most of it. Veteran Indian actor <keyword id="6381489" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Om-puri">Om Puri</keyword> died on Friday morning of a heart attack at his residence here, a family friend said. He was 66. 
 Filmmaker <keyword id="30014" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivek-Agnihotri">Vivek Agnihotri</keyword>, who was going to direct the actor in his new movie, told IANS over phone: "It is a very sad news. Om Puriji passed away after a heart attack today morning. He was at his home." 
 
"His body of work in the Indian film industry has been tremendous across the commercial and parallel genres. We've lost a great talent." 
 Actor <keyword id="6533" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anupam-Kher">Anupam Kher</keyword>, a close friend of Om Puri, said he had spoken to him just two days ago, and the disheartening news of his demise was broken to him by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit. 
 
Kher described Om Puri as a "kind and generous" person, who spent four decades in showbiz with an undying passion towards his craft.
