<ul><li>The Indian railways stock has surged over 400% since its debut on the stock exchanges in October 2019.</li><li>Analysts are highly positive about <keyword id="65866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="irctc" source="Orion">IRCTC</keyword>’s aggressive expansion plan in the hospitality sector and believe that the stock would reach ₹5,000 from the ₹3,000-level currently.</li><li>The market capitalisation of the stock is ₹63,726 crore.</li></ul>Shares of the <keyword id="70669" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railway-catering-and-tourism-corporation" source="Orion">Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation</keyword> (IRCTC) have been trading with huge volumes in the last few weeks to gain almost 50% in one month. These quick gains have made the shares of the company spike 5 times i.e., 410% since its listing on exchanges in October 2019. Analysts believe the stock price is rising because of the company’s aggressive expansion plan in the hospitality sector. "IRCTC is aggressively focusing on its hospitality business by tying up with hotels, tour and travel service providers and local food suppliers. It is also giving special focus to its food chain business in running trains. Apart from this, IRCTC has made tie-ups with aviation companies as well. So, [the] market has realised that in coming times, it is no more [sic] going to remain an Indian Railways' e-ticket booking platform. It will emerge as A-Z hospitality service provider," said Ravi Singhal, vice chairman at GCL Securities according to a report by Mint. Analysts at Swastika Investmart reportedly say the reopening theme post covid restrictions is the reason for the traction in the stock along with news of stock split. Railways' <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/stock-market-news/why-analysts-are-bullish-on-irctc-ircon-here-are-the-triggers-11629954156351.html">asset monetisation plan</a> is another trigger for the stock rise. On August 12, IRCTC approved a stock split in the ratio of 1:5 to enhance the liquidity in the capital market, widen the shareholder base and make the shares affordable to small investors. A stock split is generally done to make the stock more affordable for the small retail investors and increase liquidity. The overall revenues grew at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% since FY17 till March 2020. And, the net profit grew by a CAGR of 26.3% during FY18-20. According to Kotak Securities, the company’s cost-plus based Standard Lease Agreement with the Ministry of Railways (MoR) has historically provided them with a margin over the weighted average cost of incremental borrowing determined by the MoR in consultati on. On October 28, after the railway company informed stock exchanges of the government’s decision, many investors had criticised the move on social media portals. The move came as a big shock to investors as it meant IRCTC would have to share a chunk of its revenue with the government. IRCTC stock recovers losses as government reportedly withdraws decision on convenience fee revenue share

From its issue price of ₹320, IRCTC share price rose to ₹728 by the time the markets closed. Its stock price rise was also aided by healthy global cues also pushed the Sensex up by 150 points in early trade, though it ended adding 87 points for the day. Owned by the Indian government, IRCTC is the only authorized company that sells Indian Railway tickets online. Since it virtually has no competition and railway tickets are constantly in demand, investors were excited with its IPO, which was oversubscribed by 112 times over. Being one of the world’s busiest sites for ticketing, IRCTC’s transaction volume averages between 25-28 million a month. In FY19, IRCTC’s total revenue stood at ₹19,566 million. “Levy of convenience fee on ticket bookings and commissioning of six new Rail Neer plants is expected to aid IRCTC’s revenue CAGR at 16% over FY19-21E,” IIFL securities had said in its IPO note. However, IRCTC also comes with its own risks since it serves only one client . “IRCTC’s business and revenues are substantially dependent on <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword>. Any adverse change in policy of the Ministry of Railways may adversely affect the business and financials,” IIFL Securities had said.

IRCTC doubles investor wealth as its stock surges 128% on listing

IRCTC crosses ₹1 lakh crore in market cap for the first time as investors adore its monopoly

Indian markets brushed aside the tepid Railway Budget presented by Minister Suresh Prabhu and continued their downward trajectory as analysts were unable to find anything bullish for stocks at first glance. 
 
The Nifty crashed below the crucial 7,000-point support in afternoon trade and quoted at 6,976, down 41 points. The end of the monthly expiry of derivatives contracts also put intense pressure on stocks. 
 
Analysts said the budget's targets looked ambitious against the backdrop of meagre revenue picture of the Railways. 
 
Meanwhile, Prabhu told Parliament the Railways had planned for the following goals in the year to March 2017: 
 
* Operating Ratio of 92 percent. 
* Capacity expansion plan of 1.21 lakh crore rupees. 
* Life Insurance Corp to invest 1.5 lakh crore rupees in Railways over 5 years. 
* Track electrification of 2,000 km. 
* To set up 2 locomotive factories with an order book of 40,000 crore rupees. 
* Two new freight corridors to be set up 
* To lay more emphasis on existing corridors being constructed. 
* Announced 44 new projects 
* Prabhu remained quiet on a possible hike in passenger fares. 
 
Stocks of companies dealing with the Railways across its spectrum fell sharply. Wagon makers Titagarh, Kalindee and Tex Rail dropped 5 percent each. Electrical equipment makers Siemens and BEML edged lower. Railway Infrastructure providers GMR Infra and Lanco Infratech slipped in trade as well.

₹10,000 invested in IRCTC shares on listing is worth more than ₹38,000 today ⁠— the record could get even better

Officials said while ₹ 26,000 crore is the upfront payment on the delivery of the trains, ₹ 32,000 crore will be paid to the winning bidder over a period of 35 years for the maintenance of these trains. The financial bids will be opened in the next 45 days. According to the tender document, the successful bidder has to produce a prototype of the sleeper class for Vande Bharat trains within 24 months. The Indian Railways is targeting to roll out the first sleeper version of Vande Bharat train by the first quarter of 2024. Till now, the railways has awarded contracts for manufacture of 102 Vande Bharat trains which are all chair car. The Vande Bharat trains are expected to be a big upgrade from the premium Rajdhani Express service. The sleeper class-version of these trains will be run on the routes to cover overnight rail journey like New Delhi-Patna, New Delhi-Lucknow and others. After four years of intensive work and planning, country's first and the second Vande Bharat trains as electric multiple units at semi-high speed, were flagged off by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> in 2019 on the New Delhi-Varanasi and New Delhi-Katra in J&amp;K routes.
