According to the Economic Survey 2024, the pace of construction of national highways has increased from 11.7 km per day in FY14 to around 34 km per day by FY24. The capital expenditure in railways has increased by 77% in the last five years, with significant investments directed at the construction of new lines, gauge conversion and doubling. The passenger handling capacity at airports in the country has increased by 62 million passengers per annum in FY24 with new terminal buildings being opened at 21 airports. There is now a need to add more airports and expand the existing airports. The clean energy sector in India saw new investment of ₹8.5 lakh crore between 2014 and 2023. <h2>Metro and rapid train connectivity to soon double</h2>At present, 945 km of metro rail or RRTS lines are operational, out of which 86 km was added in FY24. This is set to soon double as 993 km of metro and RRTS lines are under construction in 27 cities across the country. Economic Survey highlights public sector investment's role in driving infra growth; Underlines need for private sector to step up

Amid questions on the depleting <keyword id="20776807" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="loan-to-deposit-ratio" source="keywords">loan-to-deposit ratio</keyword> in <keyword id="19895091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-banks" source="keywords">Indian banks</keyword>, a recent report by <keyword id="19896146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Motilal-Oswal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Motilal Oswal" meta.hostid="269" meta.entityid="Motilal Oswal">Motilal Oswal</keyword> suggests that the loan-to-deposit (LD) ratio is likely to subside on its own in the coming months. The debate on loan-to-deposit ratio (LD), particularly concerning sluggish <keyword id="19998084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposit-growth" source="keywords">deposit growth</keyword> and potential risks to <keyword id="20089808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-stability" source="keywords">financial stability</keyword> is raised by even the finance minister and the <keyword id="20151998" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI-governor" source="keywords">RBI governor</keyword>. However, the report notes that on closer examination, the situation may not be as alarming as it seems. As of 9th August, 2024 the Indian <keyword id="19964544" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banking-sector" source="keywords">banking sector</keyword>'s loan-to-deposit (LD) ratio stood at 77.2 %, which is slightly below its recent peak of 78.2 % on 22nd March 2024, and its all-time high of 78.8 % in September 2013. The report stated that typically a rising LD ratio is indicative of a tightness in the banking sector, potentially indicating overheating. A lower LD indicates that the bank is aggressive in its credit disbursement practises, which could be risky. It highlighted that an analysis of the sector's transactions with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF), along with recent trends in the weighted average call rate (WACR), suggests that the current rise in the LD ratio does not indicate tightness, which is why there is no immediate cause of concern. In fact, the report added that the concern over weak deposit growth may be overstated. Historical data show that bank deposits grew at an average rate of 9.5 % during the pre-COVID period (January 2015 to February 2020) and 10.4 % in the post-COVID period (March 2020 to August 2024). Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also urged state-run banks to enhance deposit mobilization through attractive offers and focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Loan-to-deposit ratio pegs the total deposits received by the bank against the loans it has offered. It helps in understanding how liquid the bank is. The loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) is a financial metric that compares a bank's total loans to its total deposits. It's used to assess a bank's liquidity and credit risk, and to inform lending and deposit-taking decisions The report said while the exact measures are unclear, the deposit growth could potentially be increased by making other asset classes less attractive through taxation or interest rates, or by boosting fiscal spending to increase net credit to the government. In its forecast, the report noted that private banks will witness a moderation in their <keyword id="19998083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-growth" source="keywords">credit growth</keyword>, while public sector banks will maintain a healthy credit growth rate. "Our analysis suggests that deposit growth could be raised by either making other asset classes unattractive (through taxation and/or interest rate) or increasing the growth in net credit to the government by pushing fiscal spending higher" the report added. Alternatively, policymakers might consider curtailing loan growth to lower the LD ratio. However, this could slow deposit growth, particularly if corporate credit growth remains weak. Encouraging savers to shift investments from other assets to bank deposits could also be an option, but this carries risks of overreach and potential damage to economic confidence. Das had also flagged the excessive growth, or froth developing in the personal loan space. Notably, while credit growth in unsecured personal loans like credit cards continues to decline, it remains elevated at 23.3% as of June 2024. However, this is a significant reduction from 34.2% witnessed in November 2023. As fiscal spending increases, bank credit to the government is likely to grow, which should elevate deposits and broad money supply. The report said "However, the extent of foreign capital inflows and the RBI's policy for managing these inflows remain uncertain". Last month, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das had also addressed this issue in the 50th meeting of MPC (Monetary Policy Committee). Per him, deposit mobilisation has been lagging credit growth for some time now. This may potentially expose the system to structural liquidity issues. "While there could be a debate regarding ‘deposits funding loans’ vis-à-vis ‘loans funding deposits’, the current regulatory concern stems from the fact that there could be structural changes happening which banks need to recognise and, accordingly, devise their strategies. Households and consumers who traditionally leaned on banks for parking or investing their savings are increasingly turning to capital markets and other financial intermediaries", Das said. Per him, while bank deposits continue to remain dominant as a percentage of financial assets owned by households, their share has been declining consistently, since households are now increasingly allocating their savings to mutual funds, insurance funds, pension funds and other avenues.

He noted that within the next decade, India is poised to become the world's third-largest economy and will benefit significantly from its demographic dividend. However, Nageswaran also acknowledged potential challenges posed by AI, particularly for India's <keyword id="20811086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-process-outsourcing" source="keywords">Business Process Outsourcing</keyword> (BPO) sector. This indicates a potential short-term dip in productivity as industries adapt to new technologies. Despite these challenges, Nageswaran added that the long-term potential of AI is promising. The broader adoption of AI could lead to significant improvements in critical areas such as healthcare and education, thereby enhancing human capital. The economic survey presented in the Parliament by finance minister Nirmala Sithraman says in the medium term Indian economy can grow at a rate of 7 per cent. The economic survey stated, "In the medium term, the Indian economy can grow at a rate of 7 per cent plus on a sustained basis if we build on the structural reforms undertaken over the last decade. This requires a tripartite compact between the Union Government, State Governments and the private sector." The report stated that the <keyword id="20861069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-shift" source="keywords">global shift</keyword> towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the <keyword id="20016971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia-Ukraine-war" source="keywords">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> offer India additional opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the <keyword id="23046732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-defence-industry" source="keywords">global defence industry</keyword>. The report noted that the country's long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. "Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%. The China + 1 strategy and the Russia-Ukraine war provides an additional opportunity for India to fill the gap created in the supply chain and hence increase its contribution to the global defence industry," the report read. The report added that to achieve this target a well-developed domestic ecosystem is crucial as lower import content in products accelerates approvals by reducing international conflicts. The report added that the Ministry of Defence has taken key initiatives to attract Indian private players and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) include establishing aerospace parks and defence corridors, fast-tracking project approvals, and enhancing development and testing facilities. Highlighting the potential in India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) segment the report explained that it holds a significant potential for global aerospace companies due to its technical expertise and cost-competitive solutions. "India provides a huge opportunity in the <keyword id="23046733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRO-segment" source="keywords">MRO segment</keyword> for global aerospace leaders given the expertise the country provides as well as the cost efficiency solutions compared to its global competitors" the report added. India aims to increase domestic defence turnover to Rs 3 lac crore by 2029, Rs 500 billion targeted for exports. This growth will help reduce the Government of India's import bill as India remains the world's largest importer of defence equipment. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government, 75 per cent of the defence capital outlay is now reserved for domestic players, up from 49 per cent in FY21. Given the geopolitical challenges and modernisation needs of its Armed Forces, the report added that India plans to invest Rs 8.3 lac crore in domestic procurement, offering substantial business opportunities for local companies. "India intends to place orders worth INR 8.3 trn through domestic procurement and thus it presents a massive business opportunity for local players" it added. As per the Ministry of Defence, India's defence manufacturing sector has witnessed an increase of 16.8 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant increase marks the highest-ever growth in the country's defence production value. The total value of defence production reached Rs 1,26,887 crore this year, up from the previous year's figures.

Private entities too will follow suit, says Nirmal Bang. </li><li>Improving affordability and rising loan tenures could possibly sustain a multi-year residential real estate cycle. </li></ul>India’s investments into fixed assets hit a decadal high in the fourth quarter of FY23. Measured in terms of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) — which is investments of producers in fixed assets — it’s now at a high of 35.3% of India’s gross domestic product (GDP), as per a research report by Nirmal Bang. The trigger to this high is the Indian government raising its spending. In the last quarter of FY23, its capex was up by 22.9% YoY. Going ahead, the research firm believes that private entities too will go in for capacity expansion —- as capacity utilization of industries is now hovering between 74-75% in the last one year on an average. “Private capex announcements in FY23 more than doubled from pre-pandemic levels and are running ahead of the central and state governments,” said a Nirmal Bang report named India Capex Meter. Overall, new capex crossed the pre-pandemic peak and stood at around ₹12 lakh crore tn in 4QFY23, according to data from CMIE. Multi-year residential real estate cycle Real mortgage rates have risen over the past year, but a structural downtrend persists. The report finds that the Indian household capex has held on, aiding growth in the housing sector. While it did flatten out recently due to rising interest rates, growth in housing credit could possibly sustain marginally above system credit growth, Nirmal Bang believes. “This, along with improving affordability and rising loan tenures could possibly sustain a multi- year residential real estate cycle,” it adds. For corporates, however, real interest rates have recently turned slightly adverse, rising above their long-term trend. This however is unlikely to be a major deterrent in the near term since the initial leg of private capex recovery is unlikely to be bank funded. Capital goods sector Most of the capex indicators have remained in positive territory over the past year, the most significant being the capital goods sector – that builds industries. “While the central government’s persistent capex focus provided the initial thrust, indicators such as capital goods production and capital goods imports too have sustained in the positive territory over the past year,” the report said. Yet another indicator, that’s – the profitability of the capital goods sector has also improved. “Operating profitability of BSE Capital Goods companies has sustained in the positive territory despite persistent pressure on margins. Over the past two quarters, operating profitability of the BSE Capital Goods companies has grown by over 15% YoY,” said Nirmal Bang. There’s more steam left? State and central governments have been steadily spending on building road projects. The road construction has been robust, but the nature of investment into the sector seems to be changing. While state and central governments seem to be slowing down, the <keyword id="53482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-sector" source="Orion">private sector</keyword> is more than making up for it, with project announcements. Bank credit to the sector is also on-point. “Bank credit to the infrastructure sector has seen some sluggishness recently, but bank credit to the roads sector, which is the key beneficiary of government capex, seems to be holding up,” the report said. Manufacturing back to pre-Covid levels Going by the investment proposals, there seems to be a broad-based capex recovery, the research report says. In 4QFY23, investments in the manufacturing sector were about 48% above the pre-Covid level. “Sectors that saw recovery were chemicals, metals, machinery and miscellaneous manufacturing. Investments in food &amp; agro-based products remained below the pre-pandemic level,” said Nirmal Bang. The top sector in terms of investment proposals by value is metals. It is followed by sectors such as sugar, transportation, textiles, drugs &amp; pharmaceuticals, chemicals and fermentation-based pharmaceuticals. Even sectors such as leather are seeing some resurgence, aided by China +1 strategies. The share of sectors like electrical equipment is seen moderating as some of the early Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes get implemented. On the other hand, proposals from sectors like food processing and textiles are seen rising.
