Divya Bala meets the girl of the moment blazing a trail through the international fashion scene.<br /><br />You're a model from Delhi in Milan for the first time, fresh out of your teens. You're somewhere in the sprawling, sumptuous headquarters of Versace, perhaps feeling a little out of your depth. You've made it through a room full of 70 other hopeful models and been approved by five gatekeepers of one of fashion's most storied luxury houses to be booked for your first international runway. A living legend-in this case, Donatella Versace-is overseeing your fitting, ensuring the precision tailoring of the sharply-cut black suit you are wearing lives up to the Versace standard. Suddenly, she flicks back her curtain of flaxen hair to look at you and, in her gravely Italian drawl says, "Do you know you're opening the show?"<br /><br />It's the kind of fairy-tale story that model dreams are made of, one that is Avanti Nagrath's reality. However, the 21-year-old has trouble believing it, even almost a year on. It was then that she burst onto the international fashion scene, opening the Versace autumn/winter 2022-23 show at Milan Fashion Week on February 25.<br /><br />"It still feels like a dream when I think about it-even while I was walking the show it felt like a dream. There were so many models around, it was Bella [Hadid]. It was Gigi [Hadid], and I'm the one opening the show?" Nagrath recalls, speaking from her home in Delhi, where she is taking a break before returning to the circuit in January. "I told myself, 'You can get intimidated by the big names, but just do what you do best and forget whatever else is around you.' And because I was the first girl out, I was like, 'If I don't go out, the whole show is going to stop.' So the second they said, 'Go!' I put blinders on and walked."<br /><br />Born and bred in Delhi, growing up with her parents, her younger brother and her grandmother, Nagrath was a self-confessed "outdoor kid", a tomboy who enjoyed nothing more than playing sports. And when she wasn't on the basketball court, she was perpetually in front of the camera.<br /><br />"My mum tells me that even when I was a kid, I loved taking photos. If there was a camera in front of me, I would pose for it. I still have pictures of myself doing the typical Bollywood pose-you know with your hip out, and your hand on your hip," she says, with a laugh. "And then at 14, my mum and I were sitting together and she asked, 'Why don't you try modelling?' I had always loved [modelling] and looked up to models like Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Naomi Campbell, so I thought, why not? I took a few pictures and put it on social media and then a few agencies approached me."<br /><br />With the support of her mother, Nagrath started modelling at 15, between classes at the Modern School Barakhamba and extracurricular duties as an avid basketballer. (Nagrath was captain before handing over her captaincy to a teammate due to the growing demands of her modelling career. A movie moment saw her wave the flag at her school sports day before swapping her basketball shorts and sneakers to walk in one of Tarun Tahiliani's saris at his show at Lakme Fashion Week.) She has also worked with the likes of Rahul Mishra, Manish Malhotra, Lovebirds and Pankaj &amp; Nidhi, garnering attention for her appearances at 2019's FDCI-organised Fashion Week in Delhi.<br /><br />"I learnt a lot in India," explains Nagrath. "I met so many designers and people in the industry. I figured out how the industry works, how a runway show is. My vision was that I always wanted to be an Indian model representing India outside. I have that ambition of wanting to do something big."<br /><br />Upon graduating in 2020, Nagrath was anxious to go abroad to economics school and continue modelling, however, Covid and a vaccination mishap would more or less ground her until January 2022 when she was able to restart conversations with her agents. She then flew to Europe and promptly booked the aforementioned Versace show. For autumn/winter 2022, she would go on to walk for Bottega Veneta in Milan, The Row, Coperni and Givenchy in Paris. Since then, she has also worked for Burberry, 1017 ALYX 9SM, Jacquemus, Chanel, Ferragamo, Courreges, Hermes and Ralph Lauren, as well as the Alaia Summer 2023 lookbook, the Proenza Schouler White Label campaign and the Versace autumn/winter 2022-23 campaign.<br /><br />I ask Nagrath what she thinks it might be about her that have endeared her so instantly to the echelons of high fashion (besides her razor-sharp angles, glossy black hair, feline nose and pillowy lips, of course). She politely demurs: "I don't look at it that way. I just feel like this is something I love doing, and for me, what's important is how you are as a person. No matter what you do, you always have to be humble and grounded, no matter how much you achieve."<br /><br />When it comes to her off-duty style, a quick scroll through her Instagram reveals an aesthetic where racy meets tomboy: printed cargos with short tank tops, leather trousers with cropped shirts, baggy hoodies and ripped jeans amidst a strong smattering of saris. While she has begun her collection of luxury bags (the first bag she ever bought for herself was a Louis Vuitton), her footwear obsession is singular. "I love wearing Jordans the most-I love any Nike sneakers. Whenever I'm working I'm in sneakers, in case people are like, 'You're too tall!' So I rarely wear heels."<br /><br />"I think I'm still figuring out what my actual style is. It really depends on the way I'm feeling on a particular day," she explains. "I like to wear streetwear quite often. In Paris, I need to look chic, so I'll wear tight jeans with a nice blazer and boots. I just love being natural, I don't like to overdo it with my dressing. In terms of clothes, I like to experiment with up-and-coming brands and Indian labels. I love going vintage shopping too. I have this one brand called Esse Studios which I really love. I have a Siddartha Tytler skirt with me which is really cool. I love Atsu, I love UpToNoGood. There are so many brands coming up in India and I really want to work with them and see what they have because it's just nice to take them abroad with me and then have (the people I work with) see that there's so much potential in the Indian industry in terms of fashion. So my goal, in a wardrobe sense, is to explore the Indian market and start building my wardrobe."<br /><br />For her Vogue India shoot, Nagrath posed in a kaleidoscope of colours around Bandra in Mumbai, having flown in for the day from London on her way to Delhi, a location that brought her fond memories from her early days modelling in Maximum City and how far she has come.<br /><br />"It felt unreal to do the cover for Vogue because, again, that was something I always wanted to do. I have a collection of Vogue magazines in my room. [The idea] that I'm going to buy one which has me on the cover and put it over there [with the others] is just crazy. And the fact that my first [magazine] cover is going to be Vogue India is a big deal."<br /><br />Nagrath pauses. "I always tell my agents that I want to start from home. If I do something abroad, I want to come back and be an inspiration for the people at home. Once Gigi and Zayn got back together at the end of last year it was like they never skipped a beat and knew what they had was special. The couple and their families are overjoyed," sources told ET.</p><p>Us Weekly's source added that Hadid has "always wanted to start a family with Zayn." In the Federal Reserve's fight against inflation, chair Jerome Powell has made clear his expectation to keep the benchmark Fed Funds rate above 5% well into 2024. </p><p>And while the S&amp;P 500 was initially able to notch significant gains in the first half of the year, the wheels have started to come off as relief from high rates seems unlikely.</p><p>September was<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-analysis-charts-data-september-effect-federal-reserve-inflation-2023-10"> brutal for stocks</a>, and the<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/treasury-bond-yields-market-selloff-market-crashes-dot-com-bubble-2023-10"> bond-market sell-off</a> hasn't helped.<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/treasury-yields-stock-market-impact-outlook-interest-rates-bonds-2023-10"> Soaring 10-Year US Treasury yields</a> mean a risk-free investment offering nearly 5% returns, making stocks even more unappealing. And don't look now, but bond yields<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/bond-yields-fed-interest-rate-hikes-recession-us-economic-outlook-2023-10"> could edge even higher</a>. </p><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/bonds/wall-street-recession-prediction-soft-landing-economy-bond-yields-stocks-2023-10"></a></p><div type="image" title="inflation" height="750" width="1001" msid="104291328" hostid="261"></div><p><strong><em>"But wait! Jobs are strong, and unemployment has remained flat."</em></strong> </p><p>You're not wrong if that's your initial reaction reading all this. Friday's job report was indeed strong. The<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-rate-labor-market-september-report-2023-10"> US added 336,000 jobs</a> last month, nearly double what was forecast, while the unemployment rate held at 3.8%.</p><p>The<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-resilient-consumer-spending-may-not-last-bloomberg-survey-2023-9"> US consumer</a>, meanwhile, has been resilient, spending in the face of rising inflation. However, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-consumer-spending-down-breaking-2023-9"> cracks are starting to show</a> in that foundation. </p><p>But therein lies the problem. If the economy continues to excel despite inflation, the Fed won't feel comfortable lowering rates and losing the progress made. </p><p>Hence the will-it-won't-it recession talk that has dominated market conversations for over a year. </p><p>If all this discussion of a recession is bumming you out, understand it's not a foregone conclusion. She termed it a ‘breach of human rights’ and "the biggest form of bias and unjust censorship".<br /><br /><a href="https://time.com/5863350/tiktok-black-creators/">TikTok was also called out</a> by quite a few content creators for shadowbanning their posts on Black Lives Matter. <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is shadowbanning and how it has evolved on the internet" text="What is shadowbanning and how it has evolved on the internet"><span data-til="noop">What is shadowbanning and how it has evolved on the internet</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />A number of content creators Business Insider India spoke to defined ‘shadowbanning’ or ‘ghost banning’ as social media posts being taken down, muted or hidden from followers without informing the user or creator. <br /><br />It is generally understood to be secret censorship of a person, community or a topic on social media. It quietly silences opinions.<br /><br />As per media reports, the word ‘shadowban’ appeared in the early 2000s. It was a moderation technique, used to keep a check on bots, trolls, shitposters or anyone else they deemed harmful.<br /><br />Shadowbanning isn’t just a social media lingo. It even <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3q744/where-did-shadow-banning-come-from-trump-republicans-shadowbanned">existed in the</a> 80s, wherein bulletin board systems (BBS), a computer server-running software used to exchange information, would limit ‘twit bit.’ Someone who would exhibit immature behavior, was flagged as a ‘twit’ and was granted limited access. After they were flagged, only the twit and the admin could see their messages on the board.<br /><br />As the internet became a primary mode of communication, content moderation and social media algorithms became much more complicated and lines started blurring. Today, people use the term shadowbanning quite often. Some content creators blame the streak of their low-performing content pieces or dip in reach on shadowbanning. <br /><br />“No matter how exciting the word shadow banning sounds, the fact is that intricately means banning the voice of somebody completely. The word banned is binary in nature, it's a zero or a one, there is no spectrum here. So that means you will literally get no one else to see your content,” clarifies Preetham Venkky, Chief Digital Officer of advertising agency DDB Mudra Group and President at digital marketing agency 22feet Tribal Worldwide.<br /><br />As per a few media <a href="https://www.economist.com/the-economist-explains/2018/08/01/what-is-shadowbanning">reports</a>, when shadowbanned, users can continue to post messages, add new followers and comment or reply to other posts. But their messages may not appear in the feed, their <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/instagram-shadow-banning-is-real_n_5e555175c5b63b9c9ce434b0">replies may be suppressed </a>and they may not show up in searches under their usernames. <br /><br />An economist report also said that a major and <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/instagram-shadow-banning-is-real_n_5e555175c5b63b9c9ce434b0">sudden drop </a>in likes or retweets is also a form of shadowban, wherein the user is restricted to reach out to new people. Their posts are only visible to them and their followers. <br /><br />Body positivity content creator Prableen Kaur has seen a few creators and users being shadowbanned. She defines it as, “There's a certain topic that you're talking about, and maybe the platform doesn't want anyone to talk more about it, then they will decrease the amount of reach you will get on a particular post and that is shadowbanning for me. Posts with hashtags #PoleFitness and #StLuciaCarnival were removed from the explore tab completely but the platform said it was an error. “We apologise for the mistake,” a spokesperson said in both these cases. “It is never our intention to silence members of our community,” said the platform spokesperson.<br /><br />In India, Facebook and Instagram ‘<a href="https://thewire.in/tech/facebook-and-instagram-mistakenly-blocked-sikh-for-almost-three-months">mistakenly blocked</a>’ #Sikh for almost three months in 2020. A similar apology was released after it caught international attention. It was around the anniversary of <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/operation-bluestar-s-37th-anniversary-today-tight-security-in-amritsar-101622936709706.html#:~:text=events%20of%201984.-,Operation%20Bluestar%20was%20a%20military%20action%20ordered%20by%20then%20PM,and%20left%20the%20shrine%20damaged.">Operation Blue Star</a>, which was a military action ordered by former PM Indira Gandhi to flush out Sikh militants holed up in Harmandir Sahib Complex. Posts associated with #Sikh went up as the community raised its voice to mark the injustices of 1984; but were never heard.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Is shadowban real?" text="Is shadowban real?"><span data-til="noop">Is shadowban real?</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />It isn’t just Instagram. All <a href="https://twitter.com/jackielerm/status/1231122961379340289">platforms </a><a href="https://www.papermag.com/tiktok-lgbtq-shadow-banning-2647646779.html?rebelltitem=3#rebelltitem3">deny </a>that shadowbanning is real. However, many users believe it is. <br /><br />There are more than 98.4k hashtags #shadowbanned and 55.7k posts with #shadowban on Instagram as of May 12, 2022. There are over 30 combinations around the hashtag shadowbanned on Instagram, each with at least 100 posts. <br /><br />While it is hard to confirm shadowbanning’s existence, there’s some evidence. In the last few years, many shadowbanning trackers have cropped up on the internet. Websites like HeistSocial.com, Tribber.com, shadowban.eu, <a href="https://shadowban.yuzurisa.com/">shadowban.yuzurisa.com</a>, to mention a few, allow users to determine if they are shadowbanned on different social media platforms. <br /><br />Travel, fashion and lifestyle content creator Avantika Mohan took this test three months ago and confirmed that she was shadowbanned. “A lot of people say that shadowban is just in your head and it is just low-engagement. But when I was shadowbanned, people were unable to see my posts. I even did a poll on Instagram to find out if they could see it. They mentioned that they were unable to see my posts.”<br />                  <div type="image" title="Avantika Mohan" msid="91590098" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Avantika Mohan talks to Business Insider India about her experience of being shadowbanned&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />While Mohan said she didn’t see a pattern in this ghost ban, body positive content creator Neelakshi Singh, spotted a trend in how it works. <br /><br />“Creators who’ve called out racism or other marginalised communities like the black community or Asian community were refrained from posting about an issue -- I feel that somewhere that is buried in. Any issues or anything that doesn't fulfill the property or satisfy the mainstream, I feel that goes on to a shadowban.”<br /><br />On the other hand, digital content creator Shivani Kapila believes that it is just a perception.<br /><br />“It's very convenient for a creator like me to say that it [content] is shadowbanned rather than coming up with different content ideas and brainstorming further. It is maybe because my crowd is exhausted of seeing what I've been showing for about six months.” <br /><br />When a social media user is banned permanently from the platform, they receive an official email or a notification before, whereas, when a user is shadowbanned, they are kept in the dark. Their hashtags don’t seem to work -- posts fail to appear on the ‘explore’ tab when clicked on the hashtag. <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Is there a way to dodge shadowban and play safe?" text="Is there a way to dodge shadowban and play safe?"><span data-til="noop">Is there a way to dodge shadowban and play safe?</span></cmsannotation><br />Instagram appears to have shadowbanned hashtags such as #hotweather, #asiangirls, #alone, #brain, #bikinibody, to mention a few. On the other hand, Business Insider India found out that #gunviolence has more than 182k posts as of May 13, 2022.<br />                  <div type="image" title="Hashtags banned" msid="91590125" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Hashtags that are banned on Instagram&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />A few users and content creators have found a way to dodge this hashtag ban. <br /><br />“To circumvent the issue of certain words or phrases being flagged, ‘Algospeak’ is fast becoming a commonly used practice among the netizens, where alternatives are found in rhyming words, abbreviations, pop-culture references, emojis and more such creative means. When a platform won’t allow using the hashtag sexual assault to discuss the issue, it becomes #SA. A vibrator isn’t an appropriate lingo for social media, so an eggplant emoji is used; the internet is littered with such examples,” Shivani Kamdar, associate creative director at digital agency SoCheers tells Business Insider India.<br /><br />Rashid Ahmed, head of digital at marketing agency Infectious Advertising, also shared a few words that can get you banned on Instagram. <br /><br />"Body shaming terms (like fat and ugly), negative adjectives or phrases (like sad and selfish or spewing crazy) and known to be factually incorrect statements, can be cause for a user’s post to be shadowbanned. Repeated inappropriate content identifications could lead to a user being barred from posting for a specific period. Unwittingly used tags like #Snap, #pushups, #single, #brain or even #alone, could result in suppression or being shadowbanned."<br /><br />Ahmed suggested that creators can avoid being shadowbanned by "being mindful of the type of content they create, by using appropriately ‘safe’ language, and delivering to their audiences’ interests and tastes."<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Lack of transparency around updated algorithm is eroding user trust" text="Lack of transparency around updated algorithm is eroding user trust"><span data-til="noop">Lack of transparency around updated algorithm is eroding user trust</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />While we all know that Instagram bans certain hashtags time and again to moderate its content and its algorithm keeps changing, many say that its lack of transparency is the most frustrating part. <br /><br />By not informing users what is deemed appropriate by the platform and how to adjust their content as per Instagram’s liking, user trust is affected and it also comes across as discriminatory. <br /><br />Founder and CEO of influencer marketing platform Wobb, Ishan Jindal, says, “If shadow banning is a thing, then it is a drawback at the end of the social media platforms and their flawed policies that practice censorship of voices. In terms of the content creator industry, such a phenomenon would highly restrict a creator’s individualism and unconventional tendencies.”<br /><br />Telling us how it can affect a creator, he adds, “Any type of censorship of the content with the idea of suppressing voices can severely damage the trust between social media platforms and their users. Such a phenomenon also affects public figures, creators and their relationships with the audience.”<br /><br />With their algorithm, social media platforms have the power to decide what the mainstream audience sees on the explore tab. <br /><br />Telling us how algorithms work, Kamdar says, “If a topic or conversation is deemed “inappropriate” by a platform’s algorithm, no matter how significant it is for the individual or the community, the content around it won’t reach its desired audience, thus affecting the creator’s discoverability to an extent. It won’t matter how painstakingly the content is created, or how significant a role it could play, its reach will be limited.”<br /><br />In case of the shadowban on #sikh before Operation Blue Star anniversary, an entire community was stopped from talking about a painful historic event. Similarly, TikTok had restricted #BlackLivesMatter’s reach. <br /><br />While social media platforms have denied the allegations, they have also released apologies for blocking these hashtags, when there was a social movement rising simultaneously in real life. <br /><br />This could lead to lack of trust among many users and content creators. The other is Hulu's "Fyre Fraud."</li><li>Smith defended his movie's objectivity, despite Hulu's claims that the movie isn't objective because of the involvement of Jerry <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">Media</keyword>, which handled social media for the Fyre Festival.</li><li>Smith also said that at one point he had two different versions being edited, a feature film and a docuseries.</li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Veteran documentary filmmaker Chris Smith was putting the final touches on his first Netflix project - the Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman doc, "Jim &amp; Andy: The Great Beyond" - when he began to see stories hitting the internet about the doomed Fyre Festival. And like most of us, he couldn't look away.</p><p>On April 27, 2017, hundreds who had paid as much as $25,000 to party on an island in the Bahamas with some of the biggest musicians and Instagram influencers in the world arrived at the festival to find no music acts, FEMA tents doubling as the "villas," and disgusting cheese sandwiches to eat.&#xa0;</p><p>In the aftermath, it became evident that the festival's creator, Billy McFarland, an entrepreneur who was using the fest as a way to launch a talent booking app, was the one to blame. That wasn't simply because his ambitions outweighed the reality of pulling off a festival in a matter of months. He also defrauded people who bought tickets to the festival as well as many who were working for him. </p><p>And so Smith set out to tell the behind-the-scenes story of what led to this epic fail. "So getting to people who worked directly for Fyre and the agencies and contractors that were hired was instrumental."</p><p>In October 2018, Smith teamed with Vice Films' Danny Gabai (who was also a producer on "Jim &amp; Andy") to make "Fyre," and quickly realized this could become a movie after one of the first interviews he shot. </p><p>"I went to interview one of the event contractors and what I thought would be 45 minutes or an hour ended up being a three-and-a-half-hour interview," Smith said.</p><p>And then Smith hit the jackpot with Jerry Media and Matte Projects.</p><p>Jerry Media, known best for its popular F---Jerry Instagram account, handled the social media for Fyre and was the event's connection to the influencers that would make the festival go viral (Jerry Media CEO Mick Purzycki is also a producer on the movie).</p><p>Matte Projects was the agency behind the promotional video for Fyre Festival that starred the likes of Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski. When the video hit the internet, featuring models running around an island once owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar, it made Fyre Fest the hottest destination for the elite (and for wannabes).</p><h2>Feature film or docuseries?</h2><p>Both companies handed Smith documents and hours of footage related to their time working on Fyre. The gem was b-roll of the promotional video shoot that had no script and was just continuous shots of McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, who cofounded the festival with McFarland, hanging out with the models.</p><p>The footage shown in "Fyre" of the making of the promo is an eye-opening look inside how disorganized the idea of Fyre was from the start. Red flags begin to crop up showing that McFarland and his team were out of their depth, as questions about travel for the attendees or how they planned to get enough bathrooms to accommodate everyone were met with blank stares.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5c3feea63028c12d90128be5-1920/fyre%203%20netflix.jpg" border="0" alt="Fyre 3 Netflix" data-mce-source="Netflix"><p class="source"><span>Netflix</span></p><p class="caption">(L-R) Ja Rule and Billy McFarland.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>"Fyre" then goes deeper down the rabbit hole as it recounts the race to get everything ready by the time the festival kicks off. This included many Bahamians working long days (many of them never were paid) and some on McFarland's team ready to go way beyond the call of duty. That included event producer Andy King, who says on camera that McFarland persuaded him to offer fellatio to a Bahamian customs officer who was giving them a hard time (King never actually had to do it).&#xa0; &#xa0;<p>"After doing interview after interview, I started to see this pattern of people talking about Billy's ability to sell the dream," Smith said. "Andy's story, the reason we thought it was important, was to show how crazy things got."</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong></em>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-knew-hulu-would-release-its-fyre-festival-doc-early-but-wasnt-concerned-2019-1"><em>Netflix was tipped off that Hulu would surprise-release its Fyre Festival documentary first but wasn't concerned</em></a></p><p>Smith said over the year of making the movie he and his team had gathered so much archival and interview footage, that at one point he had two editing teams - one crafting a feature-length documentary, while the other was making a docuseries.</p><p>After a month, Smith settled on making it a feature. But that wasn't the only hurdle to cross. He was also trying to figure out if McFarland would be in the movie.&#xa0;</p><h2>Fighting Hulu's allegation of 'whitewashing'  </h2><p>Smith said that on two occasions they were set up to shoot an interview with McFarland but the interviews never happened. McFarland claimed to Smith that there was another documentary about Fyre being made for Hulu, "Fyre Fraud," and that they were paying him $250,000 to be in it. McFarland said he wanted $125,000 to be in Smith's movie.&#xa0;</p><p>"We just didn't feel comfortable with him benefiting after his actions that hurt so many other people," Smith said.</p><p>McFarland then came back with the price of $100,000 in cash to be interviewed. Again, the answer was "no."&#xa0;</p><p>When Business Insider asked Smith if he really believed McFarland got paid anywhere close to those figures by Hulu, given his history of lying about finances, Smith said, "If [Hulu] wants to correct me, I would love to know what the real number is."</p><p>Hulu declined to comment for this story. "Fyre Fraud" codirector Jenner First told <a href="https://www.theringer.com/movies/2019/1/15/18183308/fyre-festival-documentary-netflix-hulu-billy-mcfarland-pay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Ringer</a> that McFarland was paid but that the $250,000 amount was inaccurate: "I can't tell you the amount, but what I can tell you is that if you printed [$250,000], that would be a lie. That was not the amount. At the end of Hulu's movie, it takes a jab at Netflix's "Fyre" for being produced by Jerry Media, implying the movie goes soft on the company's involvement with Fyre. Smith took offense at the implication.</p><p>"The narrative out there is we whitewashed everything to protect [Jerry Media]," Smith said. "I actually went overboard in making sure that wasn't the case. Hulu hasn't seen the movie yet."</p><p>Both films touch on the fact that Jerry Media could sense the Fyre Festival was not going to be the epic party that it was promoted as, but continued to do the social media outreach. That included deleting comments left by disgruntled Fyre Festival ticket holders on Fyre's social media.</p><p>"My editor came to me and said, 'I wouldn't even put this deleting comments thing in the movie if it was my choice,' but we felt we had to put it in because people would assume that we were whitewashing the story," Smith said. "Both Jerry Media and Matte Projects handed over their inboxes and they said we could look for anything. There was no censorship of the data or the information they received. "What was interesting to me was seeing him after Fyre and it felt like he didn't miss a beat. He was continuing to move forward and seemed to be living the lifestyle that he had before Fyre. So he's a very smart, very focused, industrious person.
