The first <keyword id="3354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-model" source="Orion">Indian model</keyword> in history to open the <keyword id="16083449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="versace-runway" source="Orion">Versace runway</keyword>, beating out the likes of Bella Hadid and <keyword id="1916728" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emily-ratajkowski" source="Orion">Emily Ratajkowski</keyword>, Avanti Nagrath makes her Vogue India cover debut with its Jan/Feb 2023 issue. Divya Bala meets the girl of the moment blazing a trail through the international fashion scene. You're a model from Delhi in Milan for the first time, fresh out of your teens. You're somewhere in the sprawling, sumptuous headquarters of Versace, perhaps feeling a little out of your depth. You've made it through a room full of 70 other hopeful models and been approved by five gatekeepers of one of fashion's most storied luxury houses to be booked for your first international runway. A living legend-in this case, Donatella Versace-is overseeing your fitting, ensuring the precision tailoring of the sharply-cut black suit you are wearing lives up to the Versace standard. Suddenly, she flicks back her curtain of flaxen hair to look at you and, in her gravely Italian drawl says, "Do you know you're opening the show?" It's the kind of fairy-tale story that model dreams are made of, one that is Avanti Nagrath's reality. However, the 21-year-old has trouble believing it, even almost a year on. It was then that she burst onto the international fashion scene, opening the Versace autumn/winter 2022-23 show at Milan Fashion Week on February 25. "It still feels like a dream when I think about it-even while I was walking the show it felt like a dream. There were so many models around, it was Bella [Hadid]. It was Gigi [Hadid], and I'm the one opening the show?" Nagrath recalls, speaking from her home in Delhi, where she is taking a break before returning to the circuit in January. "I told myself, 'You can get intimidated by the big names, but just do what you do best and forget whatever else is around you.' And because I was the first girl out, I was like, 'If I don't go out, the whole show is going to stop.' So the second they said, 'Go!' I put blinders on and walked." Born and bred in Delhi, growing up with her parents, her younger brother and her grandmother, Nagrath was a self-confessed "outdoor kid", a tomboy who enjoyed nothing more than playing sports. And when she wasn't on the basketball court, she was perpetually in front of the camera. "My mum tells me that even when I was a kid, I loved taking photos. If there was a camera in front of me, I would pose for it. I still have pictures of myself doing the typical Bollywood pose-you know with your hip out, and your hand on your hip," she says, with a laugh. "And then at 14, my mum and I were sitting together and she asked, 'Why don't you try modelling?' I had always loved [modelling] and looked up to models like Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Naomi Campbell, so I thought, why not? I took a few pictures and put it on social media and then a few agencies approached me." With the support of her mother, Nagrath started modelling at 15, between classes at the Modern School Barakhamba and extracurricular duties as an avid basketballer. (Nagrath was captain before handing over her captaincy to a teammate due to the growing demands of her modelling career. A movie moment saw her wave the flag at her school sports day before swapping her basketball shorts and sneakers to walk in one of Tarun Tahiliani's saris at his show at Lakme Fashion Week.) She has also worked with the likes of Rahul Mishra, Manish Malhotra, Lovebirds and Pankaj &amp; Nidhi, garnering attention for her appearances at 2019's FDCI-organised Fashion Week in Delhi. "I learnt a lot in India," explains Nagrath. "I met so many designers and people in the industry. I figured out how the industry works, how a runway show is. My vision was that I always wanted to be an Indian model representing India outside. I have that ambition of wanting to do something big." Upon graduating in 2020, Nagrath was anxious to go abroad to economics school and continue modelling, however, Covid and a vaccination mishap would more or less ground her until January 2022 when she was able to restart conversations with her agents. She then flew to Europe and promptly booked the aforementioned Versace show. For autumn/winter 2022, she would go on to walk for Bottega Veneta in Milan, The Row, Coperni and Givenchy in Paris. Since then, she has also worked for Burberry, 1017 ALYX 9SM, Jacquemus, Chanel, Ferragamo, Courreges, Hermes and Ralph Lauren, as well as the Alaia Summer 2023 lookbook, the Proenza Schouler White Label campaign and the Versace autumn/winter 2022-23 campaign. I ask Nagrath what she thinks it might be about her that have endeared her so instantly to the echelons of high fashion (besides her razor-sharp angles, glossy black hair, feline nose and pillowy lips, of course). She politely demurs: "I don't look at it that way. I just feel like this is something I love doing, and for me, what's important is how you are as a person. No matter what you do, you always have to be humble and grounded, no matter how much you achieve." When it comes to her off-duty style, a quick scroll through her Instagram reveals an aesthetic where racy meets tomboy: printed cargos with short tank tops, leather trousers with cropped shirts, baggy hoodies and ripped jeans amidst a strong smattering of saris. While she has begun her collection of luxury bags (the first bag she ever bought for herself was a Louis Vuitton), her footwear obsession is singular. "I love wearing Jordans the most-I love any Nike sneakers. Whenever I'm working I'm in sneakers, in case people are like, 'You're too tall!' So I rarely wear heels." "I think I'm still figuring out what my actual style is. It really depends on the way I'm feeling on a particular day," she explains. "I like to wear streetwear quite often. In Paris, I need to look chic, so I'll wear tight jeans with a nice blazer and boots. I just love being natural, I don't like to overdo it with my dressing. In terms of clothes, I like to experiment with up-and-coming brands and Indian labels. I love going vintage shopping too. I have this one brand called Esse Studios which I really love. I have a Siddartha Tytler skirt with me which is really cool. I love Atsu, I love UpToNoGood. There are so many brands coming up in India and I really want to work with them and see what they have because it's just nice to take them abroad with me and then have (the people I work with) see that there's so much potential in the Indian industry in terms of fashion. So my goal, in a wardrobe sense, is to explore the Indian market and start building my wardrobe." For her Vogue India shoot, Nagrath posed in a kaleidoscope of colours around Bandra in Mumbai, having flown in for the day from London on her way to Delhi, a location that brought her fond memories from her early days modelling in Maximum City and how far she has come. "It felt unreal to do the cover for Vogue because, again, that was something I always wanted to do. I have a collection of Vogue magazines in my room. [The idea] that I'm going to buy one which has me on the cover and put it over there [with the others] is just crazy. And the fact that my first [magazine] cover is going to be Vogue India is a big deal." Nagrath pauses. "I always tell my agents that I want to start from home. If I do something abroad, I want to come back and be an inspiration for the people at home. So it's a huge deal for me." <ul><li>The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, <keyword id="2210217" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="oneplus">OnePlus</keyword>, is ready to embark into the smart TV segment in India. </li><li>The company’s co-founder, <keyword id="2497827" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carl-Pei">Carl Pei</keyword>, stated that OnePlus will position the TVs as flagship models as they have done with their smartphones. </li><li>The increase in competition is good news for consumers since it could spell cheaper prices in the future. </li></ul>The demand for <keyword id="618835" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smart-TVs">smart TVs</keyword> in India has been <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/tech/news-analysis/demand-for-smart-tvs-has-increased-in-india-as-disposable-incomes-increases-3702891.html">increasing</a> with disposable incomes shooting up. Xiaomi already disrupted the space with their ₹40,000 smart TV and now it looks like OnePlus is ready to jump into the fray. While both of the Chinese smartphone manufacturers are profiting from sales in India, their strategies in the Indian market are worlds apart. That being said, OnePlus plans on launching smart TVs in the flagship segment rather than the budget segment <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/chinas-oneplus-set-to-foray-into-indian-smart-tv-market/articleshow/66423677.cms">according</a> to the company’s co-founder, Carl Pei. “The market is big. There are different segments…while we haven't revealed our product rollout plans, the positioning of TVs has to be the flagship… There is still a lot of work that could be done in terms of user experience,” Pei stated in an interview with the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/chinas-oneplus-set-to-foray-into-indian-smart-tv-market/articleshow/66423677.cms">Economic Times</a>. Even when it comes to smartphones, Xiaomi may have the most amount of sales, but consumers are <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/xiaomi-sells-maximum-number-of-phones-but-indian-consumers-most-satisfied-by-oneplus-1379351-2018-10-31">more satisfied</a> with OnePlus phones. And for OnePlus, India contributes to nearly one-third of their global revenue making it a key market for the company. Over the past year, OnePlus has been aggressively campaigning any new products that come into the Indian market like setting up hubs for research and development locally. Good news for the TV consumer Currently, the market for smart TVs in India is pegged at ₹22 billion, and <a href="https://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/ggkw68/india_smart_tv?w=5">set to grow</a> another 30.2% between 2018 and 2024. The burgeoning demand for products in India can be attributed not only to the increase in people’s incomes but also to the level of internet penetration in the country. Not to mention that since there are more companies competing in the segment, the prices of smarts TVs have dropped. And, OnePlus isn’t the only brand looking to make a move. In the past year, Thomson, Kodak, Xiaomi and even the locally-groomed Micromax tried to foray into the smart TV segment. While Xiaomi definitely made an impact, other televisions weren’t as impressive. Competing in the budget segment, where features are generally comprised for costs, not all smart TVs are as ‘smart’ as they need to be. Any smart device is a gadget that can connect to the internet. But a well functioning smart device has to do more than just that. And, that’s where most smart TV manufacturers are struggling. While most TVs run on Android, they’re not necessarily running Android TV. And with custom user interfaces, even if the TVs come preloaded with Netflix or YouTube, other OTT platforms like Hotstar or Amazon Video Prime tend to crash when installed later. If OnePlus is looking to launch into the flagship segment, then user experience of the smart TV has to be its top priority.

OnePlus set to enter the Indian smart TV market, but only with flagship models

Soon, Indian exporters and manufacturers will be able to sell their products to vendors across the globe as the country is planning to open up a B2B e-commerce portal. 
 In a first-of-its-kind initiative, India wants to open an online marketplace for exports based on <keyword id="4187526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba-model">Alibaba model</keyword>. 
 
This move will not only add value and brand but will also open windows from Indian exporters to trade from different nations, making India a sourcing hub as well. 
 
Alibaba’s model works on a simple concept, it is a platform for global wholesale trade through which manufacturers and distributors can sell their products to companies in other countries. 
 The online platform is being built by <keyword id="808260" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Brand-Equity-Foundation">India Brand Equity Foundation</keyword> (IBEF), a trust set up by the commerce department. 
 
"Though we are still working on the modalities such as payment mechanism and insurance, the overall sentiment for the project from all departments concerned, is positive. The IBEF intends to launch this business-to-business portal with at least one lakh sellers and plans to scale it up to 5 lakh over time,” an official told ET. 
 
It is likely that the online marketplace will tie up with India Post for exports. 
 
Reportedly, India's exports have been declining for the last 11 months due to major competition in a weak global economy making it difficult to achieve the targeted $300 billion from exports in 2015-16.

After unveiling his ambitious ‘100 Smart Cities’ and ‘Digital India’ plans, <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Narendra Modi—last month launched another audacious scheme Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (Parliamentarian's Model Village Scheme; this is also known as SAGY). This is his strategic move to prepare rural India for the digital age and ensure that benefits of the government’s growth endeavours are effectively percolated to communities residing on the fringes of the mainstream society. 
 
In a nutshell, the scheme aims at creating 2,500 smart villages by 2019—Each MP should ensure that one village is turning into a model village by 2016, followed by two more villages by 2019. After 2019, each MP must develop five model villages during their tenure in their constituencies till 2024. Modi also wants MLAs to join the programme, which will add 7,000 more villages to the ‘smart club’. 
 
The initiative aims at holistic development where model villages are connected to the Internet (all government or administrative documents will be made available in digital form; thus villagers don’t need to travel to other cities to submitting applications to or getting certificates from government bodies) and where all households have access to clean water, sanitation and low-carbon energy. Model villages will be provided basic amenities that are often only available in urban areas, and a social security system. The scheme also has an inherent rider to prevent MPs from misusing it—the selected villages should neither be MPs’ own villages, nor belonging to in-laws or other relatives. 
 
These select villages are expected to reach a certain level of proficiency in terms of development that will help prevent migration of villagers to cities and farmers’ suicide; besides offering jobs to youth at local level. A litany of socially-oriented programmes can be incorporated and implemented under the scheme. It includes developing biogas plant that could make a village self-reliant for fuel requirements; implementing drip irrigation to meet water requirements for crops and providing nutritional food for pregnant women to prevent mortality (maternal or infant). 
 
SAGY comes close on the heels of the plan to develop 100 smart cities which was announced by Modi earlier. Supported by a budget allocation of Rs 7,060 crore, the plan has already elicited euphoric response from the IT sector and according to market research firm IDC, at least Rs 2,000 crore will flow into the IT sector on the back of the ‘smart cities’ initiative. 
 The smart cities may take inspiration from similar initiatives in developed countries and are likely to be modeled after local projects such as Lavasa smart city, built by HCC near Pune; Electronics City in Bangalore where US-based Cisco Systems is involved in city developmental operations; and Dholera in Gujarat all of which are under different stages of construction and completion. The government has already signed a pact with <keyword id="104972" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japanese-government">Japanese government</keyword>, which will help turn Varanasi into a smart city. 
 
The smart village initiative is also an extension of Modi’s ‘digital India’ plan, which aims to promote digital inclusion with broadband connectivity down to the village level, enabling improved access to services through IT-enabled platforms. The initiative, which is worth Rs 1.13-lakh crore, will not just provide last mile internet connectivity, but also offer better access to government services and enhance development of IT skills among local people, especially youth. 
 For Modi, who is criticised as pro-business and less-socially oriented, the ‘smart village’ initiative is an opportunity to show that the <keyword id="806977" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="development-model">development model</keyword> that he envisages is not exclusive of people in the remote villages of the country.

Smart Villages: Lending A Rural Flavour To Modi’s Growth Agenda

If you’ve been inundated with the recent spate of luxury car launches, don’t worry. This is all part of a plan that luxury car majors <keyword id="6357420" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes">Mercedes</keyword>, <keyword id="6363321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> and <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> are following to gain market shares in the hugely competitive Indian luxury car market. But is this a smart move to clock in more numbers? 
	 Industry experts are giving it thumbs up. Auto expert <keyword id="220937" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Murad-Ali-Baig">Murad Ali Baig</keyword> called it an excellent move by the luxury car makers. “In the luxury market, consumers who are not price conscious at all. They will go out and buy as long as the brand is offering something different,” said Baig. 
	 
	He explained that in the luxury auto market, different car makers are playing with the prestige quotient of its target consumers. “Mercedes, Audi and BMW have rather a short shelf life. People are ready to spend to maintain a certain image. For instance, there are people who would prefer buying an Audi model as it is considered to be the car of the future. Similarly, a consumer may not want to buy a BMW as their grandfather has another car from the brand. So you see, this is how it works,” he noted. 
	 
	According to reports, both Audi and Mercedes plan to launch a slew of new cars and facelifts of their existing stable in 2015. “We have been the market leader in the luxury segment and will defend it. The Indian economy is growing well and we will strengthen our position in India,” Luca de Meo, the global head of marketing and sales at Audi had said at an annual conference held earlier this month. 
	 
	However, brand experts are not too confident about the strategy. Brand expert, Harish Bijoor, CEO of Bijoor Consultants believes it to be confusing. “The brands are trying to grab whatever price or feature gap they can in the market. So that is why they do multiple brand offering. From a marketer’s point of view, this may seem as variety in the market but from a consumer point of view, it is confusing as buyers are not getting the time to understand the offering at all,” he asserted. 
	 
	It should be noted that both Mercedes and Audi are planning strategic investments in the country in 2015 and plan to launch 15 and 10 new models respectively in the market.

Nate Silver's World Series projection is out and the Chicago Cubs are an enormous favorite

In an effort to cement its position in the country, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hyundai+motor+india">Hyundai Motor India</a> is planning to launch 2-3 new models every year till 2020. 
 
The second largest car maker in India wants one per cent growth in its market share each year with its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=car+launch">car launches</a>. 
 "In the last two years we have launched seven models. We plan to launch 2-3 new models, including full model changes, every year continuously till 2020," said <keyword id="108829" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword> MD &amp; CEO BS Seo while inaugurating first dealership in Leh. 
 
Presently, Hyundai Motor India has more than 16% market share in the overall passenger vehicle segment with its models like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=i20">i20</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=creta">Creta</a>. 
 
It is also developing models like a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MPV">Multi Purpose Vehicle</a> (MPV), a small <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SUV">SUV</a> and full model changes for its sedans Elantra and Verna to catch the Indian market. 
Hyundai is going to face competition as Suzuki also plans to roll out 15 new models by 2020. 
 
"We will keep bringing great products into the Indian market continuously to satisfy the customers here. We want to be the most loved and trusted company in the Indian market," Seo said.
