Heavy rains are predicted to lash <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and <keyword id="6354306" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="puducherry" source="Orion">Puducherry</keyword> from December 7-9 due to low pressure over the southern part of the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the <keyword id="527734" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="south-andaman-sea" source="Orion">South Andaman Sea</keyword> and adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean-Strait of Malacca, the <keyword id="272880" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-met-department" source="Orion">Indian Met Department</keyword> said on Monday. The IMD in its bulletin today said that the cyclonic circulation extends upto mid-tropospheric levels is likely to move north-west and concentrate into a great depression over south-east Bay of Bengal, by Tuesday evening. Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on December 5along with isolated heavy rainfall on Wednesday, December 6. Also, enhanced rainfall is expected to commence over the north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from December 7 mid-night. It is expected to turn from heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy at some places of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on December 8, Thursday. Some places of Tamil Nadu may also receive very heavy rainfall on Friday, December 9. The depression is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and reach <keyword id="6364822" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="south" source="Orion">South</keyword>-west Bay of Bengal near North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and the adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of December 8, when it is expected to have its landfall. The wind speed will be reaching upto 90 kmph over the south-west Bay of Bengal on Thursday. It will gradually decrease thereafter. Wind speed gusting upto 60 kmph is likely to commence along Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, South Andhra Pradesh and north Sri Lankan coasts from Thursday morning, gusting at a speed of 80 kmph till Friday morning. The wind speed would gradually decrease to 45-55 kmph to 65 kmph by Friday evening. The sea condition is expected to be very during this period and fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea until the storm subsides. Low pressure mounts over Andaman Sea, heavy rain expected to lash TN

A video by Khalistan supporters, dated July 2 posted on Twitter, showed the act of arson at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. The video, with the words "violence begets violence" emblazoned over it, also showed news articles related to the death of Canada-based Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, one of India's most-wanted terrorists who carried a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Canada last month. Responding to the incident, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller in a tweet on Monday said: "The US strongly condemns the reported vandalism and attempted arson against the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Saturday. Vandalism or violence against diplomatic facilities or foreign diplomats in the US is a criminal offence." Diya TV, a South Asian broadcast TV network in the US, said in a tweet that "a fire was set early Sunday morning between 1:30-2:30 am in the San Francisco Indian Consulate." "The fire was suppressed quickly by the San Francisco Department, the damage was limited and no staffers were harmed. Local, state and federal authorities have been notified," it said. The outlet also posted a video of the arson attack. A poster being shared on social media says that a "Khalistan Freedom Rally" will be organised on July 8 that will start in Berkeley, California and end at the Indian embassy in San Francisco. This is the second time within months that the Indian Consulate in San Francisco came under attack from Khalistani supporters. On March 19, a group of pro-Khalistan protesters attacked and damaged the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, the protesters broke open the makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two so-called Khalistani flags inside the Consulate premises. Two consulate personnel soon removed these flags. Ajay Bhutoria, an Indian community leader, said the attack on India's consulate in San Francisco is extremely concerning and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. "It is deeply disturbing to see such acts of violence targeting diplomatic missions," he said. "The Indian consulate serves as an essential hub for providing consular services and fostering bilateral relations between India and the United States. It is crucial that the staff and members of the consulate are able to operate in a safe and secure environment, free from any threat or harm," he added. Bhutoria asked the San Francisco Police Department to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. "Ensuring the safety and security of diplomatic missions is not only a responsibility of the host country but also a fundamental obligation under international law," he said. It is imperative that such incidents are met with a strong response from the authorities to deter any further attacks and ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel, he said. India's reaction External Affairs Minister <keyword id="491850" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="s-jaishankar" source="Orion">S Jaishankar</keyword> on Monday said India has asked its partner countries such as Canada, the UK and the US not to give space to "extremist Khalistani ideology" as it is "not good" for relations. He was responding to reports of Khalistani posters in Canada naming senior Indian diplomats. The minister said the issue will be raised with the government of that country. The "radical, extremist Khalistani ideology" is not good for India or its partner countries such as the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, he told reporters on the sidelines of a BJP outreach campaign. "We have already requested our partner countries like Canada, the US, the UK and Australia where sometimes Khalistani activities happen, not to give space to Khalistanis. Because their (Khalistanis) radical, extremist thinking is neither good for us nor for them nor our relations," the minister said. US condemns attempted arson at Indian Consulate in San Francisco by Khalistan supporters

Over 40 Indians were killed and more than 50 others injured after a devastating fire broke out at dawn in a building housing around 195 migrant workers in southern <keyword id="20078631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kuwait" source="keywords">Kuwait</keyword>'s Mangaf area, officials said on Wednesday. The total number of people killed in the Al-Mangaf building was 49 and 42 of them are learnt to be Indians; the remaining ones are Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and Nepali nationals, they said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described the fire incident as "saddening", reviewed the situation arising out of it at a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, NSA Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and Principal Secretary to the PM PK Mishra among others. An official statement said Modi expressed deep sorrow at the "unfortunate incident" and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He also announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of the deceased Indian nationals from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh is urgently travelling to Kuwait following a direction from the prime minister primarily to oversee assistance to Indians injured in the fire and to ensure early repatriation of mortal remains of those killed. The official statement said Modi wished speedy recovery of those injured and directed that the government of India should extend all possible assistance. "The fire mishap in Kuwait City is saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Officials said most of the Indian victims are from Kerala. The fire in Al-Mangaf building was reported to authorities in Al-Ahmadi governorate at 4.30 am and most of the deaths were due to smoke inhalation, Kuwaiti media reported, adding the fire started in a kitchen. Kuwait's Interior Ministry in a statement confirmed that the death toll reached 49. "Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information," Jaishankar said on X. "Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured," he said. Construction firm NBTC group rented the building for stay of more than 195 workers, most of them Indians from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and northern states, the Kuwaiti media said. Kuwait's Interior Ministry said criminal evidence department personnel are currently working on identifying the victims and revealing the cause of the fire. It said strict measures will be taken against building owners who violate laid down norms. "Unfortunately, we received a report of a fire at... exactly 6:00 am (0300 GMT) in the Mangaf area," Major General Eid Al-Owaihan, head of the interior ministry's General Department of Criminal Evidence said. Kuwait's health ministry said the injured were admitted to several hospitals, with 21 of them sent to Al-Adan Hospital, six to Farwaniya hospital, one to Al-Amiri and 11 to Mubarak hospital. Officials in Delhi said officials from the Indian embassy are going to the hospitals where the victims were taken to. The number of deaths and injured people will be known after they get the details, one of the officials said. "Amb @AdarshSwaika visited the Al-Adan hospital where over 30 Indian workers injured in today's fire incident have been admitted. He met a number of patients and assured them of full assistance from the Embassy," the Indian embassy said on 'X'. "Almost all are reported to be stable by hospital authorities," it said. Indian ambassador Swaika also visited the site of the fire. The Indian embassy said it is in touch with Kuwaiti law enforcement authorities, fire service and health department for necessary action. Interior minister of Kuwait Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousuf Al-Sabah ordered an investigation into the fire incident and issued directions to apprehend the owner and janitor of Al-Mangaf building. "What happened today is a result of the greed of the company and building owners," Al-Sabah was quoted as saying by Kuwait Times Kuwaiti authorities have started an investigation into the fire. Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah visited the site of the fire and blamed violations of norms and greed by the real estate owners for the incident, reports from Kuwaiti said. It also dismissed the ‘self assessments’ by telcos and said that they account to contempt of court. Firing off on the Centre, the SC asked who had allowed the telcos to do self-assessment of dues. The SC noted that it was the same government which fought tooth and nail to include penalty in the final order, and now it is wishing to do away with interest. Moonlighting trends Moonlighting may have become a conversation point in India now, but it has been a trend that’s been on the uptick in the United States since 1996. According to US Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics, multiple jobholding rate has increased to 7.2% in 2018 from 6.8% in 1996. More women in the US hold multiple jobs than men. In the US, employers tend to put in place policies for employees that require disclosures from them to avoid conflict of interest and use of office resources for other jobs. It is time, employers in India recognise the writing on the wall instead of using strong-arm tactics that will further alienate employees. Work from home may have enabled more people to explore moonlighting compared but the real cause is not that. At the start of the pandemic, WFH seemed like a very good idea to the bosses of IT companies as it led to enormous savings for them from the September quarter of FY2021. As costs declined, margins jumped and stocks rallied. Not surprisingly, the companies were willing to make this a permanent feature and were looking to repurpose their large tech parks and real estate. Two years down the line, they are taking to Twitter and calling their employees unethical and in doing so have put the spotlight on their “people problem” yet again. The pandemic has only accentuated the problem of disgruntled employees and their cry for better wages. While many of my friends who head human resource functions tell me that moonlighting is a breach of contract, people practices of India’s large IT companies can surely improve from where they are right now. Time on Floor Scratch beneath the surface or better still visit Glassdoor or Quora and search for “Time on Floor” and you will find horrifying stories of how India’s IT companies are run. One employee from a leading IT services company in Bangalore told me that he had to clock a number of hours on his seat while he was on a project, which had to add up to eight hours or more and to achieve his target he curtailed his toilet breaks and even time eating his lunch. In 2017, one tech services major sacked women who had returned from maternity leave and another one in Kolkata stopped providing women employees transport to and from the campus. The “chatter around moonlighting” has only come as the latest pain point for an industry that has found it hard to manage its people or keep them happy, which is perhaps why they rely so heavily on freshers. Moonlighting is a problem that may have surfaced after the pandemic started in 2020 and work-from-home gave people the latitude to explore other avenues of income since they were not sitting in office and saving on time. There is a deeper malaise that tech companies in India need to address upfront as the Big Techs are doing in Silicon Valley. Problem of disgruntled employees is not new From times immemorial, the IT industry in India has been battling high attrition levels and margin pressure due to wage hikes. Given the sheer number of employees that each of these companies have, it is hard to create a sense of ownership, loyalty and engagement. Nearly two decades ago, at a town hall of a large IT company, the much respected founder was asked why the variable pay was not paid out despite the very high growth trajectory of the company – those days some IT companies were growing by 100% year-on-year. The venerated founder told him that the company had its own internal goals, which were not met, therefore, the variable pay was not given. Wages at IT services companies are a lever to manage margins and to keep costs under check, thousands of freshers are hired each year. Between 2012 and 2022 the salary of the CEO of Infosys grew from ₹80 lakh to ₹79.75 crore, while that of freshers rose from ₹2.75 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh. The story is no different for the other big IT services players (see table). Town Halls, Quora and Glassdoor are a testimony of this trend. Are employee unions the answer? In a bid to improve the working conditions of the IT and ITES sectors and make these companies adopt better human resource policies, employees came together to form a union in November 2017. The labour department in Karnataka certified the formation of the Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) under the Trade Union Act 1926 and Karnataka Trade Unions Regulations 1958. The first such trade union was born in the midst of large scale retrenchment by the industry in 2017. The trade unions never took off as few employees were willing to join the union. But it does not take away the problem people have with their employers. One would wonder why would white collar workers want to come together and fight for their rights considering they are already privileged and enjoy “higher salaries” and free lunches? There is a reason as tech workers across the globe are pushing back practices of their employers be it on their business practices or treatment of outspoken employees. Tech workers across Silicon Valley too are looking at organising themselves to push their employers to adopt policies that are more inclusive. An <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/01/26/tech-unions-explainer/">article by The Washington Post</a> in April 2021 says, “Union advocates say discrimination faced by women and people of colour at the tech companies proves the need for stronger worker protections. Unions can also be a way for workers to have their voices heard about the issues they have with decisions executives are making, such as — which politicians to give money to or whether to sell software to the military and police.” Unlike the industrial age, the white collar unions are today seeking answers to bigger questions on equity, treatment of employees and broader company policies.

Indian-origin Ramesh 'Sunny' <keyword id="5886401" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="balwani" source="Orion">Balwani</keyword>, the former business partner and 'boyfriend in secret' of <keyword id="2450348" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="elizabeth-holmes" source="Orion">Elizabeth Holmes</keyword>, founder and CEO of healthcare company Therano, has been found guilty of defrauding Theranos investors and patients in the US. Balwani faced 10 counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. After a three-month trial, a jury has found him guilty of all 12 counts. He now faces up to 20 years in prison for each count, The <keyword id="6765301" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="verge" source="Orion">Verge</keyword> reported late on Thursday. Youngest billionaire <keyword id="3105" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="holmes" source="Orion">Holmes</keyword> has already been found guilty of defrauding investors. Indian-origin Balwani was Holmes' "boyfriend in secret". "They met when Holmes was 18 and Balwani was 37 -- she moved in with him the year after she dropped out of <keyword id="33081" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stanford" source="Orion">Stanford</keyword>. She also said during the trial that she was raped as a Stanford student, which is part of why she didn't finish her degree," according to an earlier TechCrunch report. During the four months of court proceedings, Holmes detailed Balwani's controlling behaviour, including a written document that dictated her daily schedule, including what she ate, when she slept and how she dressed. She said, "He was so disappointed in my mediocrity and he was trying to teach me how to be better." Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 and the company was once valued at more than $9 billion. In 2015, an expose in The <keyword id="6384660" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wall-street-journal" source="Orion">Wall Street Journal</keyword> revealed major problems with Theranos' technology. In 2018, Holmes and Balwani were charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud. According to the US Department of Justice, Holmes and Balwani used advertisements and solicitations to encourage and induce doctors and patients to use Theranos's blood testing laboratory services, even though, according to the government, the defendants knew Theranos was not capable of consistently producing accurate and reliable results for certain blood tests. "It is further alleged that the tests performed on Theranos technology were likely to contain inaccurate and unreliable results," the Justice Department said. Holmes and Balwani defrauded doctors and patients by making false claims concerning Theranos's ability to provide accurate, fast, reliable, and cheap blood tests and test results, and by omitting information concerning the limits of and problems with Theranos' technologies.
