<keyword id="7567" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Virender-Sehwag">Virender Sehwag</keyword> has applied for Indian cricket team’s chief coach post and replace <keyword id="6364325" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Kumble">Anil Kumble</keyword>. Kumble’s term will come to an end after the Champions Trophy. As Sehwag applied for the team's chief coach's post, this puts him in race with Australia’s <keyword id="93766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tom-Moody">Tom Moody</keyword> and Englishman Richard Pybus. Besides, former fast bowler Dodda Ganesh and former India A coach <keyword id="124587" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lalchand-Rajput">Lalchand Rajput</keyword> have also applied for the post. However, the entry of Sehwag -- one of India's greatest ever game changer -- makes the battle for the position very interesting. He doesn't have any prior coaching experience apart from mentoring IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab and recently, it was the <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> top brass that convinced him to apply for the post.

Virender Sehwag wants to coach Indian cricket team

Till the BCCI finds a permanent coach, former captain <keyword id="19692" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ravi-Shastri">Ravi Shastri</keyword> has been retained as Director of the Indian cricket team for Bangladesh tour starting June 10. 
 
He is a stop-gap arrangement for the tour till BCCI finds a successor to Duncan Fletcher, whose tenure ended earlier this year after the World Cup. 
 
Earlier this year, Shastri served as Team Director during the tour of Australia and the subsequent World Cup. 
 
"The BCCI wishes to inform that Mr. Ravi Shastri, former India Captain, has been appointed as Director of the Indian cricket team for the tour of Bangladesh, starting on 10 June 2015," BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said in a statement. 
 
The BCCI will appoint a new coach only after consulting the newly-formed advisory committee of the body, which comprises cricketing greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. 
 
India will play one Test and three One-Day Internationals in Bangladesh from June 10. 
 
Meanwhile, Shastri has represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India and was part of the side, which lifted the 1983 World Cup. 
 
He had travelled with the Indian team to Bangladesh in 2007 also as cricket manager after Greg Chappell resigned from the coach's post following the World Cup debacle that year. 
 
Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman were inducted into the BCCI to guide the Board.

Ravi Shastri to remain Indian

With the Test Series coming to an end, the <keyword id="8675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-cricket-team">Indian cricket team</keyword> would now be seen battling against Australia and England in a tri-nation series. Soon after that, the whole world would encounter the force with which the team would go on to defend their title of World Champions in the 2015 Cricket World Cup. 
 
However, there would be a change this year: the color, make and design of the jerseys they would wear this time around. 
 
One-Day format Captain MS Dhoni, with rest of the Team India, unveiled the team’s new ODI kit early morning today in the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Team India’s kit has been designed by Nike while Star Network is the official sponsor. 
 
“Is an improvement over the previous one,” Dhoni was quoted saying. Reportedly, the Nike designers have spent several hours taking inputs from the Indian cricket team regarding their requirements and preferences for the jersey. 
 
What makes this kit even special is that it has been made out of 100% recycled polyester, which is not only environment-friendly but also has enhanced stretch and moisture-releasing qualities. 
 
“There has been constant interaction between Nike and the players,” said Dhoni. “We all gave them our inputs and a lot of them have been passed. The product was already great and this is just an improvement on the previous one. It looks good.” 
 
Dhoni contributed his two cents in designing the front part of the jersey, which has strands signifying 24 spokes in the Ashok Chakra of the national flag, giving the person who wears it a patriotic feel.

 All-rounder <keyword id="6359048" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="R-Ashwin">R Ashwin</keyword> said that he likes the environment-friendly vision with which the kit has been created. “We feel socially responsible as a unit wearing this kit and doing our bit for the environment. So, in that regards, I am really proud of what Nike has given us.” The reason why Ashwin stresses over the environment-friendly aspect is that a pair of shirt and trousers is made out of 33 plastic bottles, which in itself is a big step in direction of social responsibilities they follow as a team. 
 
The color of the kit has also been modified to a new shade of blue, which would give an energetic approach to the upcoming series and the World Cup matches that follow.

Mumbai: After being hammered in the Tests, India have stunned everyone by bouncing back in style in the ODIs against England, taking a 2-0 lead. 
 A change in format and the arrival of inform players has helped India's cause, but what cannot be ignored is the contribution of Indian <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword>'s 'crisis man,' <keyword id="19692" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ravi-Shastri">Ravi Shastri</keyword> as Team Director. He had that special ability to bring out the best in you. He left a huge imprint on me. He was a taskmaster," Bahutule gushed. 
 
Shedding light on Shastri's tough-as-nails approach, Bahutule revealed, "In one game, I told him I won't be able to bowl because my index finger was bleeding. He told me: 'I don't care, you have to bowl.' I eventually ended up picking up four wickets," the former leggie said. 
 
"His attitude was typically khadoos - keep at it. At the same time, he was a friend, in whom you could confide anything. He radiated positivity. There was an aura around him. He made us believe we could beat any team," said Bahutule. 
 
Ex-India and Mumbai seamer Paras Mhambrey, who was in his debut season in 1994, recalled another episode which reflects how Shastri backs his men. "At Faridabad, just before the pre-quarters against Haryana, I was checking the bounce on the match wicket, and received an earful from curator (Sarkar Talwar)." 
 
Shastri saw this from the dressing room, and ran to Talwar and told him: 'You have a problem, talk to me, not him. I'm the captain.' There was no need for Shastri to do that for me, but just the fact that he did, made a huge difference to me." Mhambrey remembered.

The loss in the semifinal stage of the T20 World Cup was the death knell for the wise men who failed to select the right winning squad for the prestigious tournament. The selectors in the past have been called various names. However, two of India's legendary cricketers, referred to them as 'A bunch of Jokers' and 'Court Jesters and Lame Ducks', which was pretty amusing at that time. Both were proven right. However, the Indian acceptance of 'This is the way it is' needs to inspire a change for the better in the future. One did feel sorry for the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee, which did not receive any written or verbal brickbats. However, they had their photographs splashed in several print and digital media, with the word 'Sacked' prominently displayed. They did select a squad that had all the skills and experience to combine themselves into a forceful and winning unit. The Indian think tank of the coach, captain and the support staff was outsmarted both on and off the field by England. India's loss needed fall guys and the easiest were 'the wise men of Gotham' -- the selectors. The BCCI, interestingly, since then has used the existing selectors to select the sides for India's upcoming series. The post of the selectors is now a well-remunerated one and is a full-time job and it, therefore, requires a professional approach. The most important task is in the selection of the selectors. There are certain criteria that are required to be met as regards the age being under 60 years as well as one should have played seven Test matches or 30 First-class matches etc. However, the most important appointment by the BCCI is the appointment of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC selects the selectors and, therefore, the three members that represent it should have impeccable credentials. They, one feels, should have played over 25 Test matches and have a thorough knowledge of the game and what the position entails. The BCCI are fortunate that they have Roger Binny as their president, Dilip Vengsarkar and Shubhangi Kulkarni in their Apex Committee, three Indian Test cricketers who would be ideal people to select a very competent CAC. The selectors now are a professional outfit, wherein, the earlier requirement of five zonal representatives should be abolished. Earlier, this was necessary as the Ranji Trophy was played initially in their respective zones and thereafter teams qualified for the knock-out stage. In the present format, the zonal basis makes no sense as teams are now placed in groups from any part of India. The five selectors, similar to selection committees in other cricket-playing countries of the world, need to have individuals with the best credentials and capabilities. They could all be from one state or zone if need be. The vast amount of cricket being played domestically, one feels, each selector needs to have his own team of assistant selectors. The job now entails much more than just watching selective matches but a thorough analysis of players and their performance. India is a vast cricket-playing country and the challenge is for one to ensure that every talented Indian cricketer is identified and spotted on time. The talent-spotting programme, which was introduced under Vengsarkar many years ago, was a huge success. A similar approach should be conceptualised, with talent spotters from respective zones reporting to each of the five selectors. This would ensure a better coverage of unearthing aspiring cricketers from the junior to the senior-most level. At present, the IPL and the Under-19 India performers have become the hotbed for quick and early recognition. This is not the best solution as there are several other cricketers playing in the domestic circuit who have not been chosen in the IPL and have long passed the age of 19. A good example of late bloomers is Suryakumar Yadav. SKY, as he is popularly known, is batting like a man possessed, in limited-overs cricket. He has been a part of domestic cricket for many years and is at present 32 years old. He seems ready to play Test cricket, a format that evaded him till now. The time has come for a radical change on the appointment, scope and deliverables of a national cricket selector at all levels of the game. A common structure should be introduced that covers the cricket associations as well. The pink slips and sacking, one feels, is not the best way forward. A selector is, after all, only the facilitator and not the performer. The irony in this case was the facilitators became the fall guys whereas the ones who needed to perform are sitting unreprimanded. This definitely needs a comprehensive change. 'The dreaded pink slip given to all the Indian senior cricket selectors'

An interesting consequence of the release of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.S._Dhoni:_The_Untold_Story">M.S. Dhoni : The Untold Story</a> is that many little-known anecdotes from <keyword id="3778468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MS-Dhonis-career">MS Dhoni’s career</keyword> can now be appreciated by a larger audience. 
 The one that caught my attention the most was the story around Dhoni’s selection into the <keyword id="8675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-cricket-team">Indian cricket team</keyword>. 
 
While many in the selection panel, such as <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/143058.html">Sandeep Patil, were pushing for Dinesh Karthik</a>, Dhoni made it to the side on the back of a <a href="http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/135231.html">firm recommendation by then-captain Sourav Ganguly</a>, and Ravi Shastri. 
 
For all of his astounding success, <keyword id="6354832" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MS-Dhoni">MS Dhoni</keyword> started off as Non-Consensus selection. 
 
Why is this significant ? 
 
Most of us start with the assumption that extraordinary sporting talent is obvious to spot and should lead to a unanimous approval by the selection panel. 
 
Nothing could be further from the truth. 
 
I began to see interesting parallels between sporting selections and the way Venture Capital (VC) investors pick their investments, inspired by a set of <a href="https://25iq.com/2014/06/14/a-dozen-things-ive-learned-from-marc-andreessen/">quotes from Marc Andreessen</a>. 
 
“We think you can draw a 2×2 matrix for venture capital. …And on one axis you could say, consensus versus non-consensus. And on the other axis you can say, successful or failure.

And of course, you make all your money on successful and non-consensus. … it’s very hard to make money on successful and consensus. Because if something is already consensus then money will have already flooded in and the profit opportunity is gone. 
 
And so by definition in venture capital, if you are doing it right, you are continuously investing in things that are non-consensus at the time of investment. 
 
And let me translate ‘non-consensus’: in sort of practical terms, it translates to crazy. You are investing in things that look like they are just nuts…..The entire art of venture capital in our view is the big breakthrough for ideas. The nature of the big idea is that they are not that predictable… 
 
….Most of the big breakthrough technologies/companies seem crazy at first: PCs, the internet, Bitcoin, Airbnb, Uber, 140 characters.. It has to be a radical product. It has to be something where, when people look at it, at first they say, ‘I don’t get it, I don’t understand it. I think it’s too weird, I think it’s too unusual.’” 
 
Of course, making a non-consensus selection, whether in the world of sports or startups, is easier said than done. Consensus by definition, represents a balanced, sensible, rational view that is, in most cases, also correct. 
 
What then does it take to cross the line in order to make a crazy non-consensus selection ? 
 It turns out that the story of Sachin Tendulkar’s selection into the Indian <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> team might hold the answer. 
 
Back in 1989, the selection panel was debating whether the 16-year old Tendulkar was ready for international cricket. 
 
“What if he fails?” some in the panel asked. 
 
When it came to decision time, the ball was thrown to senior selector Naren Tamhane, who said, <a href="http://archive.mid-day.com/news/2009/sep/130909-Raj-Singh-Dungarpur-sad-demise-Cricketing-Legend-Sports-Mumbai.htm">“Gentlemen, Sachin Tendulkar never fails”</a> prompting a <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/bharat-ratna-sachin-tendulkar/top-stories/It-was-3-2-in-Sachin-Tendulkars-favour-for-1989-Pak-tour-Selector/articleshow/23919252.cms">narrow 3–2 win in favour of Tendulkar</a>. 
 
Given how Tendulkar’s career played out, Tamhane’s audacious statement appears prophetic, courageous, and even, badass. 
 
Think any longer though and you realize that it was a ludicrous, heavily biased, and quite simply, incorrect statement to make. 
 
But perhaps bias, a strong optimistic bias, is the only way we will ever make a non-consensus bet on an unproven rookie, or a crazy start-up idea. 
 
Bias repeatedly causes us to make many of our worse judgements and decisions. 
 
However, an optimistic bias is also the driving force that makes the entrepreneur believe that his odds of success are infinitely higher than his competition, the selector believe than an unproven teenage cricketer never fails, and a crazy, incomprehensible idea can be the next technological breakthrough. 
 
To borrow from <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/rare-insight-sequoia-startup-investment-calls">Shailendra Singh</a>, a winning non-consensus investment happens as a result of someone 
 
“…willing to put his neck on the line and is literally pounding the table to assert investment in a startup he believes in..” 
 
That sort of conviction will always necessarily need to be loaded with bias. 
 
But why go through all the song and dance of a heavily-biased non-consensus selection when the stakes are so high ? 
 
Wouldn’t it be safer to just go with a consensus selection ? 
 
Wouldn’t it ? 
 
In the 1984 NBA college draft, the Portland Trail Blazers <a href="http://www.npr.org/2012/12/20/167677752/film-bad-legs-hindered-bowies-time-in-portland">chose Sam Bowie over a certain Michael Jordan</a> (Who was then picked up by the Chicago Bulls). 
 
And no, it was not even close to being a Non-consensus decision. In fact, according to “Dr. Jack” Ramsay, the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers at the time, 
 
“It made the most sense for us to select Sam Bowie. It was almost a no-brainer.”

So the next time you are considering ranting about how investors and sports selectors get their picks wrong, remember that someone once called the decision to not pick Michael Jordan a no-brainer, and was paid for it.

ICC World T20: Watch what the Indian cricket team has to say to its fans

The successful completion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the selling of the media rights for it is the news that <keyword id="1523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-cricket" source="Orion">Indian cricket</keyword> is celebrating. The most important aspect of any venture is the financials, and the <keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword>, one feels, is comfortable with it. The Indian domestic season ended with the completion of the Ranji Trophy. Madhya Pradesh winning it with not a single International player in its midst is a remarkable story. One has to give kudos to each of the playing members of the side, especially, in the way they showcased teamwork and togetherness. One has to admire the coaching skills of Chandrakant Pandit, who has with this win etched himself as the best-ever cricket performance coach in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. Indian cricket may look like it is sailing through calm waters as a cricket establishment. However, one gets the feeling that cricket on the field is in a maze. There seems to be plenty of uncertainty as regards to the players and now with the captain as well. India will be playing an important Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham today. With a 2-1 lead in the series, India may be in the driver's seat with nothing major to lose. However, a victory against England for all Indians is always a special occasion. Completing a pending series eight and a half months since the last Test match of that series is in itself an amusing story. India and England in the meantime have both changed their captains and their coaches. The momentum that India had gained and established mentally as a superior unit may no longer hold. A one-Test encounter in a foreign land is never a right approach and India have suffered from this in the past. The inaugural World Test Championship, when India played New Zealand, the latter having played a few matches before, was a prime example of a team not acclimatised for the big occasion. The Indian Test team seems to be in the same predicament at present. They have landed after playing two months of T20 cricket into playing the true traditional and conventional form of the game. Test cricket requires one to be patient and draws one into a mental state that is far different from the glamorous hit-or-miss variety of the T20. India are also in a flap as regards captaincy. Jasprit Bumrah has been named captain because of the unavailability of Rohit Sharma. The ideal solution would have been to request Virat Kohli to lead. Bumrah is the leading force for India as a bowler. However, captaincy could become a burdensome issue for him. Furthermore, he has not even captained a First-class side before and, therefore, putting this additional responsibility on his shoulder would not be fair to him. God and lady luck need to shine on India, as without KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and the lack of confidence in their batters in Cheteshwar Pujara , Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, the blessings of the almighty is all what Indian fans must be praying for. The England side looks confident and cocky having won the series 3-0 against New Zealand. Their new aggressive approach has been a revelation in the way in which they bat. One admires it when it all comes out right but cricket history has shown that it could come to bite you as well. India has the bowling arsenal to demolish England's belief. Rahul Dravid has a major issue and that is to select the ideal and best eleven for the Test match. Apart from Virat Kohli, not a single spot in the batting order is in order. India possesses both pace and good spin-bowling options. The English weather tempts one to go in with an extra pacer but for India to leave out R. Ashwin would be a folly. However, the most concerning part would be Bumrah as a captain and as to how he marshals the side. India, on the other hand have their eyes focused on the T20 World Cup at the end of this year. Australia is the venue and identifying the players for it would be a challenge. The reason being that the IPL throws out players who have performed well in it and they seem to be favoured in the selection of the national side as well. This has led to a huge pool of players, all showcasing similar skills amongst them. Along with the regular established players, identifying the best from the rest is going to be a difficult task. One feels India is over-extending itself by playing two series at one time. An Indian cap has become an everyday affair. A good performance in the IPL and one is a part of one of the Indian side, if not in the senior side, then at least in one of the limited-overs one. None of the other countries send two teams to play two different series. One wonders whether the Indian players will be fresh enough to play the T20 World Cup, given the schedule of matches that they will be playing before it. Giving a cricketer a well-deserved break is not the answer. A team needs to have continuity and camaraderie to understand one another. This comes from playing as many matches together and spending quality time with one another, away from the ground. The Indian team needs to confine itself to a camp where strategies and plans are discussed and decided. This is where India has failed earlier and has, therefore, not won an ICC Trophy since 2014. One hopes Dravid changes it or else we will once again ask "WHY". The 45-year old, whose first assignment is the Test series against <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=west+indies&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">West Indies</a> that begins on July 21, has already laid down some rules for the <keyword id="8675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-cricket-team">Indian cricket team</keyword>. 
 
For starters, he has already conveyed to the players that anyone who is late for the bus will have to cough up a fine of 50 USD. 
 
Additionally, an official meeting will be held every fourth day for all the players and the spin legend had made it known that his doors are always open for any player who wants to have a chat. 
 There’s more. At the Bengalauru camp that held before the team’s departure, Kumble was also seen bouncing off some ideas to help make the team a better fighting unit. One of them was the buddy programme, which is reportedly inspired by former coach <keyword id="140441" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="John-Wright">John Wright</keyword>’s plan. 
 
In the Buddy programme, two cricketers are paired together so that they communicate, give feedback and help each other improve after a session in the nets.
