The launch of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, scheduled to carry <keyword id="19939779" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NASA-astronauts" source="keywords">NASA astronauts</keyword> <keyword id="21544825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunita-Williams" source="keywords">Sunita Williams</keyword> and Barry Wilmore to the International Space Station (ISS) was on Monday (local time) postponed after a valve glitch in the upper stage of the rocket set to propel it to space. Rocket company United Launch Alliance's Tom Heter III the director overseeing the launch announced the decision to delay the launch about two hours before the expected lift off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, United States. NASA announced on social media platform X that the problem was identified with an oxygen valve on part of ULA's Atlas 5 rocket and that the space agency, Boeing and ULA have "scrubbed the launch opportunity on May 6 for the agency's Boeing Crew Flight Test to the International Space Station due to a faulty oxygen relief valve observation on the Atlas V rocket Centaur second stage. The crew and rocket remain safe and more information will be forthcoming." It said that NASA astronauts Wilmore and Williams exited the Starliner spacecraft at Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and will return to astronaut crew quarters. This would have marked the first human crewed flight for Starliner with Indian origin Sunita "Suni" Williams piloting the craft with fellow NASA pilot Barry "Butch" Wilmore. Boing had designed Starliner to rival the Dragon capsule of Elon Musk's SpaceX which carried out its crewed flight test in May 2020. SpaceX has handled most of NASA's crew transportation needs since then. However, just two hours before the scheduled launch, a valve glitch in the rocket's upper stage forced mission managers to call off the mission. It was a frustrating setback for Wilmore and Williams, both seasoned astronauts ventured to space on two previous journeys aboard NASA space shuttle and Russian Soyuz missions and had impressive backgrounds in naval aviation. The disappointment was tangible as they unstrapped from their seats, their hopes of soaring into space momentarily grounded, CBS News reported. Incidentally Sunita Williams has named the spacecraft "Calypso" for her love of the ocean and in reference to the ship of famed explorer <keyword id="21556039" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jacques-cousteau" source="keywords">Jacques Cousteau</keyword>, who sailed across the world on his own ship named bearing the same name. Despite the setback, the seasoned duo maintained their composure, knowing that space travel demands patience and resilience. Clad in their distinctive Boeing pressure suits, Wilmore and Williams awaited news of the next launch window, ready to embark on their celestial journey at the earliest opportunity, as reported by CBS News. The Atlas 5 rocket, renowned for its reliability, stood ready for its milestone 100th flight - to launch Boeing's Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner spacecraft. The plan was that following separation from Atlas 5, Starliner engines will burn taking it the rest of the way to orbit and on to the International Space Station, according to ULA. The Atlas 5 had successfully launching scientific spacecraft to Mars on five different occasions, plus research investigations to the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter, the Asteroid Bennu and Pluto The Atlas 5 consists of two major components: a booster and Centaur, its so-called upper stage. Starliner sits on top of Centaur, which in turn rests on the booster. The booster powers everything off the launchpad. During the flight, Centaur is designed to separate from the booster, propelling Starliner into a proper orbit. Then, Starliner separates from Centaur and flies on its own. It has delivered US national security assets into space, launched weather observatories that all Americans depend upon and deployed commercial satellites to connect the world. Williams, selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998, has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions and accumulated 50 hours and 40 minutes of cumulative EVA time on seven spacewalks. Williams worked with Roscosmos on its contribution to the space station and with the first Expedition crew. Meanwhile, 61-year-old, Wilmore has logged 178 days in space and has 25 hours and 36 minutes of time on four spacewalks. NASA has been waiting half a decade for Starliner to begin flying crew, and the development of Starliner was beset by years of delays, setbacks and blunders. More broadly, Boeing as a company has suffered years of scandals in its aircraft division that have tarnished the legacy aerospace giant's brand, CNN reported. If successful, the Crew Test Flight could queue up Boeing to begin flying routine trips to the space station on NASA's behalf. Boeing has already planned six manned missions for the platform over the next six years, the projected end of the ISS' operating lifespan. NASA plans to use both SpaceX's Dragon and Boeing's Starliner to send up astronauts at least every six months from US soil. Both Boeing and SpaceX were given the responsibility in 2014 by NASA to send commercial crew missions to the ISS. Boeing received over USD 4 billion in US federal funds to develop the Starliner, while SpaceX received about USD 2.6 billion. <ul><li>The <keyword id="69007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-economic-forum" source="Orion">World Economic Forum</keyword> has picked ten breakthrough technologies that show promise for the future. </li><li>Flexible batteries, <keyword id="15777223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-ai" source="Orion">generative AI</keyword>, <keyword id="7931350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-aviation-fuel" source="Orion">sustainable aviation fuel</keyword>, wearable sensors for plants and <keyword id="432748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-computing" source="Orion">green computing</keyword> are some of them. </li><li>Many other biological breakthroughs like designer phages, metaverse for mental health, brain-machine interfaces and more have made it to the list. </li></ul>The world is changing fast with new dangers and permacrisis afoot. However, the good news is that a number of breakthrough new technologies are working to make it a better place. The World Economic Forum has picked ten such for 2023 — right from deep biology that can look into the cells to flexible batteries that can be twisted, bent and stretched. To make it to this coveted list, the technologies must offer promising major benefits to societies and economies, be disruptive, attractive to investors and researchers; and expected to have achieved considerable scale within five years. “New technologies have the power to disrupt industries, grow economies, improve lives and safeguard the planet – if designed, scaled and deployed responsibly,” said Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director, World Economic Forum and Head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the past, the WEF has picked many such winners — like the genetic-engineering tool CRISPR-Cas9 which was featured in 2015, went on to win the Nobel Prize five years later. “It is now being used to create insect and drought-resistant crops in harsh growing conditions around the world,” said Jurgens. Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines, earned their place in the 2017 report, became the technology underpinning the majority of Covid-19 vaccines protecting lives worldwide. AI-led molecular design made it onto the 2018 list. Since then, Deepmind’s AlphaFold predicted the structure of 200 million proteins, and the first AI-discovered drugs have entered clinical trials. Let’s look what technologies made it to this year’s list: Flexible batteries: Bend, twist &amp; stretch The world is going flex – with rollable computer screens to smart clothing. And the systems that power them should be so too. Flexible batteries, made of lightweight materials that can be easily twisted, bent or stretched, will soon hit the market and make standard rigid batteries a thing of the past. “The rapidly escalating development of wearable devices, flexible electronics and bendable displays demand power sources that match the agility of these systems,” the report says. One study forecasts that the global flexible battery market will grow by $240.47 million from 2022-2027, accelerating at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.79%, says WEF. Several companies like LG Chem, Samsung SDI, Apple, Nokia are are actively developing and commercialising flexible battery technology. Generative AI: Sparring partner to conventional thinking Imagine an algorithm that can draw the image that a human holds in his mind? That’s one example of the boundless potential of generative AI which can design drugs, aid in architecture and engineering — in addition to what ChatGPT does. NASA engineers are working to use this technology to build lightweight spaceflight instruments. But this technology needs to build something more, trust. “To build public trust in generative AI, applications should meet agreed-upon professional and ethical standards. Care should be taken to mitigate AI bias based on training data, with a focus on including “outlier” data and novel societal conventions,” WEF says. It should also address copyright attribution and more. With correct controls, generative AI can demonstrate the boundaries of knowledge, and act as a sparring partner to challenge conventional thinking. Sustainable aviation fuel: Moving up, with challenges ahead The road-bound cousins of aeroplanes – cars, bikes and more are going green at a rapid pace. However, the cost of making the aviation sector, which contributes to 2-3% of CO2 emissions annually, is enormous. Enter sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that’s produced from biomass, and non-biological resources. Now it makes up for 1% of the global jet fuel demand, but must rise to 13-15% by 2040, WEF says. “Such an increase will require the creation of 300-400 new SAF plants; and airlines, manufacturers and fuel companies are working around the clock to enable this level of scale,” the report says, adding that availability and collection of raw materials, along with the need for sustainably produced green hydrogen, remain major challenges. Designer Phages: Virus that carry ‘genetic scissors’ Viruses, as scary as they are, can be engineered to benefit humans. Key to this engineering are phages – viruses that selectively infect specific types of bacteria. Upon infection, a phage injects its genetic information into the bacterium. With ‘genetic scissors’, these phages can execute a set of instructions – they can change a bacterium’s functions. It can be made into a therapeutic molecule or to become sensitive to a certain drug and more. “Phages are also being designed as feed supplements to enhance the growth of livestock, treat certain plant diseases and eliminate dangerous bacteria in food supply chains,” WEF says. Locus Biosciences and Eligo Biosciences are using this approach to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Metaverse for mental health: Augmenting connections The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed the mental health crisis to such an extent that the world is falling short of health providers. The conditions are ripe for metaverse-enabled mental health treatment, WEF says. “Maturing interface technologies could further augment social and emotional connections between distant participants,” the report says. Many players are already working on it with gamification and other ways which can also reduce the stigma attached with mental health. Noninvasive neurotechnologies can provide feedback attuned to a user’s emotional state. For example, Neurable headsets use electrodes to measure emotion and can adjust music accordingly. Eventually, the metaverse will also connect to therapeutic neurotechnologies, such as direct brain stimulation to treat intractable depression,” WEF adds. Wearable plant sensors: The new frontier Traditionally, crops have been monitored via soil testing and visual inspections, both of which are expensive and time-consuming. Recent tech advancements have been monitoring crop health via low-resolution satellite data, which has gone on to sensor equipped drones and tractors which provide information. The next frontier is monitoring individual plants – with wearables. “These sensors are small, non-invasive devices that can be attached to crop plants for continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, moisture and nutrient levels,” the report says. Growvera and Phytech have developed micro-sized needle sensors that insert into a plant’s leaves or stems to measure changes in electrical resistance, but challenges remain in terms of expense and the reading of the data might need specialised expertise. It needs data analytics tools that can help farmers ‘read it’ and make informed decisions. Spatial omics: Unravelling evolutionary secrets Humans are made of millions of cells —- but what happens inside them? Spatial omics might actually help us ‘see’ the biological processes, how they work in detail that was unprecedented before. A spatial omics study of samples from people who died from Covid-19 revealed that SARS-CoV-2 causes widespread disruption of cellular pathways across all tissues. Scientists have also identified a set of neurons that help paralysed mice walk, sooner. But this technology needs to be democratised, WEF believes. It had a total market value of $232.6 million in 2021 and an estimated revenue of $587.2 million in 2030. While academic and translational research centres made up 89% of the market in 2020, the market is dramatically expanding to include pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Flexible neural electronics: Biocompatible now Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) allow electrical signals the brain produces to be captured by sensor hardware – and are already being used for patients with epilepsy, and create prosthetic limbs connected to the nervous system. But the current implants are made of hard material like chips, which can scar humans and cause substantial discomfort. They cannot bend or adapt to brain movements so, over time, they “drift” in position, decreasing the accuracy. But now researchers developed these circuits on biocompatible materials that are soft and flexible. It can deepen understanding of conditions like dementia and autism; and can also be used to develop cardiac pacemakers and more. But eventually, it holds the potential to true human-AI interfacing – but since the data from the brain is sensitive, privacy and ethical use guidelines must be established. Sustainable computing: Optimism ahead Every time we search on Google, send email or use any form of AI, we are connecting to data centres — which consume an estimated 1% of the electricity produced globally. And, this will only grow. There is no single “green data” magic bullet, but the coming decade will see strides toward net-zero-energy data centres. The first is to use cooling systems to dissipate the heat. Stockholm is using heat from data centres to heat homes. Then, AI itself can come with a solution for the heat it is generating, but analysing and optimising energy use in real-time. DeepMind has successfully demonstrated the potential of AI-powered energy management, achieving up to a 40% reduction in energy consumption at Google’s data centres. Crusoe Energy instals its modular data centres at sites where methane flaring occurs to enable cloud computing infrastructure to be powered by methane gas that would otherwise have been released directly into the atmosphere. “Given the wave of innovation and investment in this area, there is reason to be optimistic about the years ahead,” WEF says. AI-facilitated healthcare: Easing access Ever since the pandemic governments and academic teams alike have been using AI and ML models to improve access to patient care – to cut down the long delays many patients experience. This can aid developing nations in particular. India, for example, has a widely dispersed population of over 1.4 billion and has embraced an AI-based approach to enhance medical outreach. “The Indian government has enabled physicians to engage remote communities through assistive technologies, with requisite privacy safeguards in place,” the report says. However, hurdles to this system remain like patient compliance and national security concerns. “Moreover, any system that curates personal data on the health and welfare of a vast population must function within the bounds of a carefully crafted legal and ethical framework,” WEF says.

There will be more such incidents in the coming months, experts say, as a new airline Akasa Airlines is all set to launch operations. Jet Airways too is making a comeback and even Tata Air India is getting ready for a revamp. All of them will face shortage of crew, leading them to poaching. There are around 17,000 registered pilots in India out of which over 2,500 are women. The industry needs much more. “India needs 10,000 more flight attendants, 6,000 more qualified pilots. Compared to past slowdown of 2010, 2012 or 2009 in the industry, this time it is going to be very hard for the airlines to sustain. To sustain growth one has to add aircrafts, fleets, need more pilots, flight attendants, engineers,” Mark Martin, founder and CEO of Martin Consulting told Business Insider in an interview. Experts also fear that this increase in demand for experienced pilots will push them to hire foreign pilots. Flying schools had closed during the Covid-19 pandemic for two years and there are a lot of pending licenses to be approved as well. It’s not just the pilots but there will be a shortage of experienced engineers, ground staff and other cabin crew that new airlines would love to have in their fold. This could be another reason why most of them could be swayed by better salaries and offers from the market. Praveen Paul, a Bengaluru based aviation consultant disagrees. He believes that employees would stick to bigger airlines which are better paymasters and will look for stability in addition to hikes. Indigo, he says, is one of the few airlines that pays its employees on-time, unlike most others. “I don’t see talent running to new airlines in a hurry. Indigo, Tata’s Air India will not lose any talent while SpiceJet, Go Air may lose as employees feel whatever happens they get their salaries on time at Air India and Indigo,” Paul told Business Insider India. Aviation sector jobs, while technical and necessary, have gone through many rounds of stress and strain in the last few years. After the debacle of Kingfisher employees who were never paid when it closed down in 2016, Jet Airways and its bankruptcy was also hard on the sector and its employees. However, now that there’s a turnaround, they would be in a better position to negotiate — that could be bad news for airlines who are already flying on wafer thin margins thanks to a massive increase in aviation turbine fuel prices. And with nearly two years without this type of meetup, there's plenty for the industry to catch up on.In the commercial aviation realm, Boeing and Airbus are - unsurprisingly - the main attractions with support from their airline partners. But smaller players including Brazil's <keyword id="12337321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="embraer" source="Orion">Embraer</keyword> and Russia's Irkut Corporation are also in attendance with the hopes of winning orders for their competing products, offering airlines an alternative to the biggest in the business.Private aviation is another focus, with manufacturers like Dassault Aviation and Bombardier showing off their new flagship business aircraft. Private charter firms, including Comlux and VistaJet, will also make the case for why their high-end aircraft are worth thousands of dollars an hour to charter.And of course, the military, space, and defense industrial complexes will be present, with the US, Indian, French, Japanese, and UAE militaries bringing what amounts to a small air force in a display of military might. That's all in addition to the startups filling the convention hall that promise to revolutionize the aviation industry.Insider is on the ground at the Dubai Airshow. But orders for the smaller 777-8 will be key as most existing orders are focused on the larger 777-9.The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/boeing-737-max">Boeing 737 Max</a> is set to be a prominent feature at the Dubai Airshow with two static aircraft on display. Boeing, in partnership with Alaska Airlines, is displaying the 737 Max 9 EcoDemonstrator aircraft that is being used to test new technology aimed at reducing the aviation industry's carbon footprint.Alternatively, the UAE's own FlyDubai is set to have its 737 Max on display as the region's largest operator of the model. The budget carrier recently unveiled a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CVr9Jx6vf5e/">new business class cabin for the aircraft</a> including lie-flat seats, pushing the bounds of comfort on a narrow-body aircraft in a way most 737 Max operators have been unwilling to do.The Max displays come less than a year since the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-737-max-fly-again-news-update-recertification-faa-production-2020-11">Federal Aviation Administration ungrounded the aircraft</a> following <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/737-max-fly-again-crash-boeing-revisions-faa-2020-12">two deadly crashes that resulted in the loss of 346 lives</a>, attributable to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/outrageous-messages-from-boeing-employees-2020-1">Boeing software issue</a>.Boeing's newest military aerial refueler, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-expects-kc-46-tanker-this-year-defects-remain-2018-1">KC-46 Pegasus</a>, will also be on display as part of the US Air Force delegation. And the result was groundings en masse for the likes of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-havoc-forces-airlines-to-retire-iconic-planes-sooner-2020-3">Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and more</a>.Airbus, meanwhile, had already been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/last-airbus-a380-fuselage-delivered-to-toulouse-factory-for-assembly-2020-6">drawing down production of the A380</a> with the final deliveries slated to All Nippon Airways and Emirates as the final two airlines still taking deliveries. These flying penthouse apartments are intended for a particularly wealthy type of traveler than can afford the ultra-high expense of purchasing and maintaining an airline for private use.Embraer is showing off its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/embraers-newest-praetor-600-private-jet-enters-service-with-flexjet-2020-12">Praetor 600 super-midsize aircraft that's becoming popular with major private jet firms including Flexjet</a>.Aircraft completion specialist Citadel Completions will also bring a rare private jet to the skies, another airliner-turned-private jet based on the Airbus A340-500 airliner. The four-engine private offers a nearly unbeatable combination of living space and range, with the A340-500 a former favorite of airlines to fly ultra-long-haul routes.Other private aircraft manufacturers in attendance include Pilatus, Irkut Corporation, Textron Aviation, and Tecnam.<h2>4. A Brazilian and European rivalry on full display</h2><div type="image" title="An Embraer E195-E2 aircraft - Embraer E195-E2" height="1666" width="2223" msid="87697968" hostid="261"></div>Airbus and Embraer will both bring their next-generation aircraft that are fighting for control in the 100-150-seat market.Embraer is bringing its Embraer E195-E2 demonstration aircraft, featuring a special paint livery with a tiger on the nose and called the "Profit Hunter." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porter-airlines-breathes-life-into-embraer-e195-e2-program-2021-7">Sales have been poor when compared to Airbus</a> despite Embraer touting better operating economics over its Airbus competitor.Airbus and Air Baltic will be showing off the Airbus A220, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-the-airbus-a220-bombardier-cseries-plane-2020-2">formerly known as the Bombardier CSeries</a>. Airlines around the world have fallen for the A220 while Embraer has struggled to keep up commercially. It's been losing long-time customers, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-jetblue-airways-brand-new-airbus-a220-photos-review-2021-6">JetBlue Airways</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-canada-unveils-controversial-new-airbus-a220-aircraft-2020-1">Air Canada</a> to the Airbus jet.<h2>5. Russia's answer to the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320 family of aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Irkut Corporation MC-21" height="2000" width="2666" msid="87697969" hostid="261"></div>Russia's Irkut Corporation is nearing the finish line on a new jet to compete against Boeing and Airbus' 150-to-200-seat aircraft market. The MC-21 is made with composite materials and powered by turbofan engines. It's unlikely that a Western airline will place an order but the jet could show promise in Europe and Asia. <h2>6. Israel comes to town</h2><div type="image" title="Israel Aerospace Industries Boeing 777-300ER &quot;Big Twin&quot; cargo plane" height="1421" width="1895" msid="87697972" hostid="261"></div>Israel is set to have a major presence at the Dubai Airshow for the first time in the event's history. The recent easing of tensions between Israel and the UAE under the Abraham Accords paved the way for Israel's attendance.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-passenger-airliners-are-converted-into-freighter-planes-2021-2">Israel Aerospace Industries</a> is one Israeli company that will make its first-ever journey to the Dubai Airshow, highlighting its experience in defense systems, passenger-to-cargo aircraft conversations, and maintenance and repair operations.<h2>7. Never-before-seen aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Ethiad Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner" height="1198" width="1598" msid="87697973" hostid="261"></div>Etihad Airways is bringing the Airbus A350-1000 XWB to Dubai in a first-ever public display. Despite the airline taking delivery of five models from Airbus, according to <a href="https://www.planespotters.net/airline/Etihad-Airways">Planespotters.net</a>, not one has flown a paying passenger.If <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/etihad-airways-likely-retiring-airbus-a380-and-the-residence-2021-3">Etihad CEO Tony Douglas keeps his promise to retire the airline's A380s</a>, the A350-1000 will become the second-largest aircraft in the Etihad fleet behind the Boeing 777-300ER. The industry suffered a major cash crunch after thousands of flights daily came to a grinding halt in April. Coming out of the very difficult times, the sector is hoping for incentives and support from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the upcoming <keyword id="8420431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-2021">Budget 2021</keyword> on February 1. From lowering air turbine fuel taxes (ATF) to fiscal stimulus and reducing airport, parking, landing, navigation charges — the experts have prepared a long list of tasks. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="80400869" title="Do not panic when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reads out the revised estimates" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> According to the latest data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic airlines across the country carried 55.6 million passengers from January to November 2020, nearly 58% lower from what it carried in the same period last year — all thanks to the stigma around air travel. <div type="image" title="domestic air traffic (1)" msid="80562904" hostid="261"></div> Here’s what the experts are demanding for: Rationalisation of various taxes According to Kinjal Shah, vice president, ICRA, the aviation industry's deteriorating financial health has raised tax sops' expectations to help reduce their high cost and debt burden, especially lowering taxes on ATF. The ATF comprises nearly 30-40% of the total cost of an airline, and the prices in India are 45-50% higher, compared to international standard prices, she added. Though, ahead of the budget, the government has also hinted that it is planning on the same lines. Addressing a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/budget/news/various-taxes-may-rationalize-in-aviation-sector-in-budget-2021/articleshow/80186028.cms">webinar </a>on "Connecting the Dots-Recovery of aviation, tourism and hospitality", Usha Padhee, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation said, "we are working on a long-term plan to help the sector by rationalising various taxes. We are looking forward to making the ecosystem smarter and more efficient to make the aviation sector sustainable." "The policy rejig will also help the sector in the long run, if it is hit by a similar crisis in the future," she added. While this may incentivise and reduce the cost for the airlines over the long term, the sector still needs travellers to return to the airports. Regaining travelers trust is most important for revival The experts have also sought improvement in tourism experience and support related infrastructure along with other reforms to bring the travellers back to flying. Arvind Sharma, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas &amp; Co said, "Development of iconic tourist destinations will aid in the development of the aviation sector. And, Prioritising, affordable and safe air travel will boost air travel demand significantly." Even the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has recommended that the tourism industry be brought under the 'concurrent list' by amending Schedule VII of the Constitution, thus helping both the Centre and states develop a comprehensive approach that is driven by unique needs of each state. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="80492345" title="Railways Budget 2021: Faster trains, higher funding and support for green railways — here’s what’s on the experts’ checklist" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Reduction in other levies The airport, parking, landing and navigation charges constitute a separate cost for the sector and the industry experts have asked for a reduction in the excessive levies along with other sops. "In the short term, the industry requires financial aid and reduction in levies and taxes to revive operations and increase passenger traffic, and in the long term, the aviation infrastructure requirements should be addressed," said Sharma. The CII in its pre-Budget memorandum <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/budget-2021-aviation-expectations-baggage-allowance-duty-free-shop-union-budget-2021/articleshow/80213536.cms?">mentioned </a>that the government should include the aircraft components (such as computers, hardware, plastic, paints and tyres) under aircraft parts to avoid any disputes. These parts are currently assessed as per the CTH (Change of Tariff Heading) and charged at different rates. Remove cap on fare prices The government introduced a fare price band capping the air travel ticket prices for airlines to a minimum, in order to avoid exploitation by airlines. Airlines want budget 2021 to lower jet fuel price and parking charges

<ul><li>IndiGo, Spicejet, and GoAir are making the most out of the grounding of Jet Airways.</li><li>Reduced competition allows the airlines to charge high fares despite fewer passengers.</li><li>Stock market investors lapping up shares of IndiGo and SpiceJet.</li></ul>The Indian airline sector is controlled by three 'low-cost' airlines-- IndiGo, SpiceJet, and GoAir. The three companies are expected to post record profits in the year ending March 2020, according to a latest report, despite falling passenger traffic. The irony has been brought to life by the scorching airfares. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has estimated an annual profit of $400 million-500 million for IndiGo alone-- that is more than the profits last year for all three airlines put together. Within 12 months, SpiceJet's domestic market share could approach 25%, CAPA reportedly said.
