<ul><li>The armed forces and <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword> appealed to the <keyword id="476067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Transport">Ministry of Transport</keyword>, for exemptions from the BS-VI emission norms. </li><li>Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission norms are set to take effect in India from April 1, 2020. </li><li>The defence forces were also given exemption from the BS-IV emission norms in 2016.</li></ul>Indian armed forces and paramilitary forces are seeking an exemption from the stringent vehicle pollution norms, that are going to take effect from next year, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">according to sources</a>. Officials aware of the development said that these waivers are likely to be granted, as per <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">Hindustan Times</a>. India is set to welcome the new Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) norms from April 1, 2020. The norms lay down tighter rules for exhaust emission requirements for vehicles compared to the BS-IV applicable currently. However, defence vehicles were given an exception from BS IV norms in 2016 and this could be repeated again. “They have conveyed that it will be difficult to procure new vehicles till 2019 and have said that the dispensation given to the army should also be given to paramilitary vehicles because their operational areas are also similar,” according to an official. Global Norms Military vehicles in all the countries are exempted from stringent pollution control rules, “This is in part due to difficulty in assuring ultra-low sulphur fuel (10 parts per million) supply in all of the remote areas where a military vehicle might operate,” Anup Bandivadekar, passenger vehicles programme director, International Council on Clean Transportation <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/indian-armed-forces-seek-exemption-from-bs-vi-norms/story-Kc8jPYue59AmaBx9JtdEqM.html">told Hindustan Times</a>. Due to security reasons, there is no official estimate on the total number of such vehicles lined up for exemption. An official said that the army alone has about 150,000-160,000 terrestrial vehicles, such as SUVs, trucks and infantry combat vehicles. Armed forces might get an exemption from new vehicular emission norms

<ul><li>Maruti Suzuki has sent an official email asking showrooms not to accept bookings for the Gypsy. </li><li>The Gypsy was Maruti Suzuki’s third car in India and stayed in business for 33 years. </li><li>The production has been reportedly stopped as Maruti would have to incur huge costs to fit the car into the current safety norms. </li></ul>After being an icon in the business for 33 years, <keyword id="-194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-Gypsy">Maruti Suzuki Gypsy</keyword> is <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/auto/maruti-suzuki-gypsy-journey-comes-to-an-end-showrooms-stop-accepting-bookings/story/324497.html">taking</a> an exit from India’s crowded car market. A leaked official email from Maruti Suzuki shows that the company will be stopping production for the Gypsy. The Gypsy which had become the nation's favourite right from its association with the Indian Army to its off-roading adventures, will not be accepting anymore fresh bookings. All throughout its journey in India, the second generation of the SUV was sold, whereas overseas the car had ramped up to head to the fourth generation. Internationally, the car was sold as ‘Suzuki Jimny’. The decision to discontinue the Gypsy came because Maruti would have had to bear a huge cost to ensure the car fits into the stricter safety and emission norms these days. In <a href="http://www.asianage.com/business/autos/050319/maruti-suzuki-pulls-the-plug-on-the-gypsy.html">2017</a>, the Indian Army too had announced its decision to say goodbye to the good ol’ Gypsy by switching to the Safari Storme. The Gypsy was Maruti Suzuki’s third car in the Indian market after Maruti 800 and Omni. India’s SUV space now has several brands including Mahindra TUV300, Mahindra Thar, Bolero among others vying for market share. <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>’s old beloved vehicle <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> Gypsy is going to make a smashing come back. If reports are to be believed, Maruti has bagged a deal of 2,071 Gypsies that it needs to supply to Indian Army. 
 There were reports that Indian Army has picked <keyword id="140499" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Scorpio">Mahindra Scorpio</keyword> and <keyword id="595044" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-safari">Tata Safari</keyword> to supply around 3,200 vehicles. 
 
A few officials, on condition of anonymity informed ET that the order under 'GS 500' category was placed a few weeks back and the deliveries will start in next few months. The reports also suggest that Maruti Suzuki will earn Rs 125 crore through the deal. 
 
"This order is part of the earlier tender. However, the company received the order very recently," said one of the sources. "The deliveries will start in the coming few months. There is a continuous discussion with the government for future orders too," he added. 
 A <keyword id="2953201" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-spokesperson">Maruti Suzuki spokesperson</keyword> confirmed the agreement, but didn’t divulge other particulars of the deal. 
 
Started in 1985, the petrol-run Gypsy was overtaken by diesel-run SUVs long ago. Even after losing its charm in the consumer market, it remained the choicest vehicle of Indian Army and ever since then, it had maintained that stature. 
 
India’s one of the largest carmaker bagged its first order in 1991 and delivered 35,000 Gypsies to Indian Army and also became the single-largest vehicle supplier of Indian Army.
