Signaltron founder Himamshu Khasnis told PTI that the chip used in the Sahyadri LTE base stations has been developed by Signalchip. Earlier in 2010, Khasnis and his team founded a fabless semiconductor company Signalchip to make chips for 4G and 5G networks. "Signaltron has built the entire system indigenously using India's first chips for 4G and 5G networks developed by Signalchip. This is the first time an Indian system running on an Indian chip for complex communication technology has been inducted into the army. Using indigenous chips gives a high degree of control on the security of the system in its operation," Khasnis said. He said the Indian Army had posted a bid on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) for the supply of 4G LTE NIB (Network In a Box) solution last year. "Signaltron proposed the Sahyadri NIB solution and came out successful in stringent technical trials. Subsequently, Signaltron also won the competitive bid to supply the equipment. Weighing just 7 kgs, Sahyadri Network In a Box (NIB) systems provide high-quality secure wireless communication for audio, video and data applications," Khasnis said. He said the Sahyadri NIB is capable of working in both standalone and cellular modes and capable of seamless inter-operation with legacy analogue and IP telephony systems. The majority of the base stations deployed in India are not made in India. Even the few that are made in India do not have indigenous chips inside, which is the most strategic and important component of modern electronic devices and equipment. Signaltron has supplied 20 units to the army and the deployment of the base stations depends on their strategic requirement, Khasnis said. "We have supplied 20 units to the army. The Army takes its own call on when and where to deploy base station. Since they are light and mobile units, it gives them the flexibility to change the location as per their requirement," he added. At present, there is no fabrication facility in India for modern semiconductor chips. Signalchip has designed the chip indigenously and owns the entire technology that the chips deliver. In a model similar to leading semiconductor companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Mediatek etc, Signalchip also gets its chips fabricated through third-party wafer fabs. Khasnis said the Indian base station market is expected to be about USD 24 billion by 2029. "With the use of indigenous systems, there could be significant savings to forex and also boost GDP. There are sizeable market volumes available in India and worldwide. Modernisation targets of different sectors like defence, railways etc. are excellent opportunities for indigenous solutions," he said. Khasnis said that the CNPN (Captive Network-Private Network) 4G/5G market worldwide is expected to cross USD 30 billion by 2030, which will enable large possibilities for the local chip-based base stations, thereby providing economies of scale. Indian Army inducts first-ever indigenous chip-based made in India 4G base station from Signaltron

The induction of <keyword id="21291143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-lift-helicopters" source="keywords">heavy-lift helicopters</keyword> and <keyword id="21291142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="logistic-drones" source="keywords">logistic drones</keyword>, deployment of all-terrain vehicles and laying of an extensive network of tracks are among a host of measures that have enhanced India's <keyword id="20889609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="combat-prowess" source="keywords">combat prowess</keyword> in Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, officials said on Saturday. As the <keyword id="19908736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army" source="keywords">Indian Army</keyword> marks the 40th year of its presence on the strategically-significant <keyword id="20282432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Siachen-glacier" source="keywords">Siachen glacier</keyword>, the officials said there have been extensive improvements in the operational capabilities of the force due to the enhancement of infrastructure in the region in the last few years. The Siachen glacier at the height of around 20,000 feet in the Karakoram mountain range is known as the highest militarised zone in the world where soldiers have to battle frostbite and high winds. Under its "<keyword id="21291144" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Operation-Meghdoot" source="keywords">Operation Meghdoot</keyword>", the Indian Army established its full control over the glacier on April 13, 1984. "The Indian Army's control over the Siachen glacier has not only been a story of unparalleled valour and determination but also an incredible journey of technological advancements and logistical improvements that transformed it from one of the most formidable terrains into a symbol of indomitable spirit and innovation," said an official. The initiatives, especially laid out in the last five years, have made significant strides in improving the living conditions and operational capabilities of the personnel deployed in Siachen, he said on the condition of anonymity. In January last year, Captain Shiva Chauhan from the Army's Corps of Engineers was posted at a frontline post in the Siachen glacier, in the first such operational deployment of a woman Army officer at a key battlefield. The official cited above said there has been a noteworthy improvement in the aspect of mobility in Siachen. "The development of an extensive network of tracks and the introduction of all-terrain vehicles (ATV) have significantly improved mobility across the glacier," he said. Another official said innovations like the DRDO-developed ATV bridges have enabled the Army to overcome natural obstacles, while high-quality "Dyneema" ropes in aerial cableways ensure seamless supply lines to even the most-remote outposts. "The induction of heavy-lift helicopters and logistic drones has vastly improved the supply of essentials to the personnel deployed in posts that are cut off, especially in winters," he said. "The availability of special clothing, mountaineering equipment and advanced rations has enhanced the ability of the soldiers to withstand the harsh conditions of the world's coldest battlefield," the official added. He said gadgets, such as pocket weather trackers, with each soldier provides timely weather updates and warn them about possible avalanches. "Recent initiatives concerning the improvement of connectivity have ensured that the personnel in forward posts in the northern and central glacier regions have access to fresh ration and vegetables instead of tinned ration, an aspect that could not have been imagined a few years ago," the official said. "Fresh ration and vegetables are now a reality for our forward posts, thanks to new logistic initiatives," he added. There has been a focus on improvement in mobile and data connectivity in the region as well. "The introduction of the VSAT technology has revolutionised communication on the glacier, providing the troops with data and internet connectivity," the second official said. "This leap in technology has enhanced real-time situational awareness, telemedicine capabilities and the well-being of our soldiers by keeping them connected with their families," he said. The VSAT or very small aperture terminal is a data-transmission technology. The Army has also been focusing on boosting the medical infrastructure in Siachen. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established telemedicine nodes that provide critical medical support not only to the troops but also to the local populace and tourists in the Nubra valley. "The medical facilities in Partapur and the base camp boast of some of the best medical and surgical specialists, state-of-the-art HAPO chambers and oxygen generation plants, besides life-support systems. This has ensured that all endeavours are made to save every life in this challenging terrain," said a third official. Indian Army marks 4 decades of presence in Siachen glacier

According to sources, Indian armed forces are all set to test the suit manufactured by this <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword> startup which will enable soldiers to fly like birds and carry out missions in March. The Indian armed forces have placed <keyword id="13878805" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="a-request-for-proposal" source="Orion">a Request for Proposal</keyword> (RFP) for procurement of 48 jet suits on trial basis. If they pass the test, the <keyword id="15350" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="army" source="Orion">Army</keyword> would initiate large scale procurement, the sources said. Manufactured by Absolute Composite Private Limited, based in Bengaluru, the jetpack suit has used five engines, including the turbo engine at the back. The suit weighs three kilograms and can fly 80 kilogram weighing soldiers. It has the capability to fly 10 kilometers in 10 minutes. The research is continuing on gaining more fuel efficiency in terms of mileage. It is expected to be handy in Army operations in impassable and inaccessible landscapes and can be handy in times of natural calamities, landslides, fire emergencies, and building collapse. It could be used as a drone, helicopter to cross rivers, or broken bridges. As per the company, the jet suit has 70 per cent indigenised components and efforts are on for total indigenised content. After the violent clash between both sides on June 15, the Indian Army estimates that it needs to maintain its troops in the forward areas to ensure that Chinese Army doesn’t exploit the situation. Rationing supplies on the cards Just bringing in excess supplies may not be enough to manage the increased number of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Indian Army is also looking over the ‘scale of rations’ that can be given out to soldiers. The usual amount allocated to each soldier is around 2.5 kilograms of ration per day. However, officials told <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/with-chinese-troops-yet-to-disengage-army-stocks-up-for-harsh-ladakh-winter/articleshow/77117141.cms?from=mdr">The Times of India</a> that if you cut the ‘frills’ out of the equation, the weight of the rations can be brought down to just 1.5 kilograms. Running short on time Another cause of concern is that even though there are more mouths to feed, the amount of time to get rations in place is restricted. The AWS exercise involves pre-positioning and stocking supplies in the forward locations before the snowfall sets in. Since most of the forward locations are over 15,000 feet in altitude, they will largely become inaccessible starting November. Normally, the Indian Army has around 150 days between the months to June to September to set up. This time around, due to the tensions with China along the border, the time has been cut short. The coronavirus pandemic has further complicated the acquisition of rations. Even before the advent of COVID-19, procuring special dehydrated rations in huge quantities was a challenge. India is loading up supplies in Ladakh fearing the worst as the Chinese army drags its feet on its way back

The UAE-based small arms manufacturer <keyword id="1291912" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="caracal">Caracal</keyword> on Monday stated they are committed to the '<keyword id="6354869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>' initiative to fast-track the supply of 93,895 <keyword id="9974832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="car-816-assault-rifles">CAR 816 assault rifles</keyword>. The company was selected by the Indian Ministry of Defence in 2018 to supply assault rifles to <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>. Caracal stated that they have already identified the required land, facility and local partners to be able to commence production immediately. Over 20 per cent of the components fitted on the CAR 816 are already made in India, with Caracal now making a commitment to fully manufacture the rifles in-country, in alignment with the 'Make in India' initiative. The initiative will also see Caracal oversee technology transfer. "With strong bilateral ties between our two nations, and with India being a key market for Caracal, we remain on standby to supply the product to the customer upon instruction." The CAR 816 carbines are intended to replace the Indian Army's current 9mm Sterling carbines, with the CAR 816 boasting higher bullet velocity and reduced weight compared to the Sterling carbines. The assault rifle has secured a number of contracts from customers across the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, and has been adapted to suit the Indian Army's needs, incorporating the latest technological advances. UAE-based weapons maker promises nearly one lakh CAR 816 assault rifles for the Indian Army through 'Make in India'

The missiles, having a range of 1,850 metres, can be fired from ground as well as vehicle-based launchers and their induction is planned to be completed in three years, the <keyword id="48413" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry">ministry</keyword> said. In the last few months, the ministry finalised a range of procurement projects for the three forces to enhance their overall combat capabilities. "The acquisition wing of the <keyword id="6369097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence">Ministry of Defence</keyword> signed a contract with defence public sector undertaking <keyword id="129646" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Dynamics-Limited">Bharat Dynamics Limited</keyword> (BDL) for supply of 4,960 MILAN-2T anti-tank guided missiles to Indian Army at a cost of ₹1,188 crore," the ministry said in a statement. The missiles are being produced by BDL under license from French defence major MBDA Missile Systems. "These missiles can be fired from ground as well as vehicle-based launchers and can be deployed in anti-tank role for both offensive and defensive tasks," the ministry said. "Induction of these missiles will further enhance the operational preparedness of the armed forces. Induction is planned to be completed in three years," it added. Military experts gauge that disengagement is likely to be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/china-has-hardened-its-stance-experts-decode-the-india-china-joint-statement-on-border-tensions/articleshow/78270081.cms">long, drawn-out process</a> that will take a while to complete. With winter ready to set in by the end of the month, and reports of troop additions, the border between India and China is starting to look a lot like the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. India races to build border roads Amid the endeavour to resolve the border dispute, Indian Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> iterated that China and Pakistan are in cahoots to cause chaos along India’s geographical boundaries. “You are aware of the situation on our eastern and northern borders. It appears as if border disputes are being created under a mission, first by Pakistan and now even China,” he said at an inauguration event yesterday with kicked off operations on 44 new bridges in border areas — including seven in Ladakh. “These bridges are designed to facilitate movement of heavy civil and military traffic in border areas," said Lieutenant General Harpal Singh from the Border Roads Organization(BRO), which builds all infrastructure along South Asian nation’s borders. And, there are more border roads to come. The Modi administration has completed 74 strategic roads along the eastern border so far and has plans to finish 20 more by next year. India-China border stalemate hardens The stalemate along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) seems to be deepening with both countries preparing their troops for winter and sending in more supplies. The Asian giants have been locked in a standoff for over five months now with <a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/3105218/india-china-border-stalemate-endures-fear-ladakh-new-kashmir">18 rounds of meetings</a> between them at diplomatic, political and military levels to try and resolve the tensions. However, withdrawal of troops is yet to be seen despite Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his counterpart Wang Yi meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) ministerial meeting and agreeing on a ‘five-point plan’ for quick disengagement. Going forward, there may be a glimmer of hope, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Xi Jinping set to face each other for the first time since the Galwan Valley incident at the BRICS Summit on November 17. Chinese PLA is reportedly rotating troops despite India's insistence on disengagement from friction points along the border

As China's commitment for disengagement at the border in Eastern Ladakh remains unsatisfactory, India has directed its armed forces to prepare for a long haul, sources said on Tuesday. The revelation came during a review meeting on Tuesday afternoon in the South Block as deliberation took place over the fifth round of Corps Commander level talks. The members of the China Study Group along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met to discuss the results of dialogue during the fifth round of Corps Commander level talks. Sources said that Chinese disengagement plan at <keyword id="1255425" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pangong-Lake">Pangong Lake</keyword> and Depsang remains "unsatisfactory". It was also decided that there was no question of diluting India's stand. "Future strategies for disengagement at the border to be chalked out and till then forces have been told to plan for a long haul," said a source privy to the meeting. It was also discussed that Beijing has started troop and material build-up in depth areas across the 3,488-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). The fifth round of talks took place between the 14 Corps commander Lt General Harinder Singh and South Xinjiang Military District chief Major General Liu Lin at Moldo on August 2 and it lasted for 10 hours. India found that the Chinese side has started the build-up in three sectors of the LAC -- western (Ladakh), middle (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh) and eastern (Sikkim, Arunachal). Intelligence agencies also alerted that China has also mobilised soldiers near Uttarakhand's Lipulekh Pass, a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley. India had urged China to remove forces from Pangong Lake and Gogra where disengagement has not taken place. At Pangong Lake, China has strengthened their positions between Finger-5 and 8, and India is to take up this move very strongly. The mountain spurs jutting into the lake are referred to as Fingers in military parlance. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has refused to pull back eastwards from the 8-km stretch it has occupied from Finger-4 to Finger-8 by building scores of new fortifications there since early May. The Chinese troops are also in Depsang which continues to block Indian soldiers from going to their traditional patrolling in the region. The Depsang Plains, a table-top plateau to the north of Galwan, remains a major hotspot due to its strategic location providing access to the logistical hub and airstrip at Daulat Beg Oldie and the critical Karakoram Pass in the north. Since the PLA troops are not moving back as per consensus, the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> has kicked off the massive logistical exercise for advance winter stocking with rations, specialised clothing, prefabricated shelters, Arctic tents and other equipment to maintain. Till now two rounds of deliberations have taken at Moldo (China) and two in Chushul (India). Indian Army plans for the long haul as talks with China remain unsatisfactory

<ul><li>With winter approaching along the <keyword id="49399" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Line-of-Actual-Control">Line of Actual Control</keyword> (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, China has sent its troops' assemblable thermal shelters. </li><li>India has also been preparing for a winter standoff conducting its biggest military logistics operations in decades. </li><li>The border tensions between India and China are different from the past phases, with more troops and an increasing amount of hotspots. </li></ul>It’s not just the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> that’s readying itself for the harsh winter of the Himalayas along the India-China border in Ladakh, but the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) as well. According to the Chinese state-run publication <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1202859.shtml">Global Times</a>, the troops stationed at the border were recently equipped with assemblable thermal shelters. To counter China’s threat along the border, India conducted the most extensive military logistics operations in decades. Before the roads get snowed in, the Indian Army has been busy hauling in ranks, heavy weaponry, ammunition, fuel, food, and other essential winter supplies. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76725494" title="India is ready for the ‘long haul’ with China until winter after the third round of military talks" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The situation at the border this year is very different with more troops and an increasing number of friction points where India and China are locked in a standoff. China’s new thermal shelters China's new shelters have dorms for sleeping, canteens, washing rooms, toilets, warehouses, microgrids, and heating equipment that can function in temperatures as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius and altitudes up to 5,500 meters above sea level. Even with sub-zero temperatures outdoors, the temperature inside the shelters can be maintained at above 15 degrees Celsius, according to a report by PLA Daily, the army’s publication. Diesel heaters ensure emergency heating, and over 90% of the shelter’s components can be reused. However, PLA Daily asserts the new self-powered thermal insulation homes aren’t new. Border troops have been using them at several outposts across the plateau and alpine areas over the last two years. India continues to build border roads The Indian government is using the newly launched Atal Rohtang Tunnel to deploy armed forces and equipment faster than before. The next round of military negotiations between India and China are scheduled to take place on October 12 on the Indian side of the border. <ul><li>The Indian army has revised its policy for the purchase of four wheelers from the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) which sets vehicle purchasing limit at ₹12 lakh for officers. </li><li><keyword id="3969981" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Bipin-Rawat">General Bipin Rawat</keyword>, attributed the decision to budgetary constraints and step to bring parity among Commissioned Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and other ranks (ORs). </li><li>The new ceiling has also set the engine limit for officers at 2500 CC and for JCOs and other ranks at 1400 CC. </li></ul>Indian army Junior Commissioned officers and other rank jawans are set to gain from the new policy of the Indian army on the purchase of four wheelers from Canteen Stores Department (CSD). Earlier there was no limit on the purchase of four wheelers from the CSD canteens, but the new rules have set a limit due to which expenditure on cars more than ₹12 lakh, excluding GST is no more permissible for the officers. The new expenditure limit for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) and jawans of other ranks ₹6.5 lakh including GST. Speaking at a seminar of retiring officers, on June 27 the Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said that the policy changes are going to bring parity in the opportunities to use the CSD facility to buy four wheelers among officers and not just officers, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/price-ceiling-on-the-purchase-of-four-wheelers-from-csd-due-to-budgetary-constraint-army-chief/articleshow/69968031.cms">reported the Economic Times</a>. Explaining the reason for the policy changes, General Rawat said that the Parliament sanctions a fixed amount for CSD under miscellaneous heads for buying essential items to be provided to the army personnel including four wheelers, and high value car purchases by officers leaves less opportunities for JCOs and other ranks. The new orders started functioning from June 1. The new policy The new rules Restrictions over capacity of the engines have also been applied. Commissioned officers at most can buy cars with 2500 CC, whereas for JCOs and other ranks the limit is 1400 CC. Junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and jawans, will now be allowed to buy a four wheeler once in service and once after retirement. The time in between purchases is reduced from ten to eight years. This will further benefit non-commissioned officers who have high aspirations to buy four wheelers, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/price-ceiling-on-the-purchase-of-four-wheelers-from-csd-due-to-budgetary-constraint-army-chief/articleshow/69968031.cms">as per reports</a>. The policy has also made changes in the frequency of the purchases. Officers can now buy two cars in eight years which was four years before the order was issued. “Earlier they could buy any top vehicle model they wanted. Now, they can’t. And the frequency of buying still remains the same for them, except for the gap between two vehicle purchases,” said an official. The official also said that the decision on placing a price ceiling was taken in view of the ‘larger picture’. The government provides 50% GST rebate on all CSD items once price negotiations are complete which provides the army personnel with cash saving benefits. “The chief had also said that if someone has the capability to buy a luxury car, then he can do it from the civil market,” another official said.
