India ranks poorly in Global Youth Development Index, at 133rd spot

According to sources, an extra General coach will be provided in all trains in the country except the premier ones like the Rajdhani or the Shatabdi, in a major step to provide relief to <keyword id="47725" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="passengers">passengers</keyword>. 
 The announcement is likely to be made in the coming <keyword id="41580" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Railway-Budget">railway budget</keyword>. 
 
Sources said the government's idea is to help the common man travel in case of emergencies - no reservation will be required to travel in the general compartment. 
 
Currently all trains have two to four general compartments, in each of which around 90 people can travel instead of the usual 72 in a sleeper coach. 
 
The plan is based on the concept of Antyodaya - the philosophy of Deendayal Upadhyay, which talks of the upliftment of people who are on the lowest rungs of society. 
 
Sources said the new coach will be attached at the end of the trains. 
 
Fitting in the new coaches, however, can be a tricky issue, they said. Rules say a train can't have more than 24 coaches, so in many trains one coach might have to be removed to fit in the general compartment. 
 
One suggestion has been to remove existing Air Conditioned sleeper coaches, but it not economically viable.

Volvo launches its

In the second major case involving a foreign company under its probe, the Central Vigilance Commission (<keyword id="47883" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CVC">CVC</keyword>) is investigating alleged <keyword id="741257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Excise-duty-evasion">excise duty evasion</keyword> to the tune of about Rs 580 crore by confectionery giant Mondelez, maker of <keyword id="6399124" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cadbury">Cadbury</keyword> chocolates. 
 
CVC sources said today the anti-corruption watchdog is also looking into the role of central and state government officials who might have facilitated the alleged evasion. 
 
An investigation has been started by the Commission in the case, they said, adding some documents have also been sought from the company. 
 There are allegations that certain government officials might have helped the company in allegedly evading the <keyword id="6356916" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="excise-duty">excise duty</keyword>, the sources said. 
 
It is the second big case being probed by the CVC involving a foreign private company. US-retail giant Wal-Mart has come under the scanner of the CVC amid allegations that it gave bribes to government officials to get customs clearances and and obtain permits to set up stores in India. 
 
A Mondelez India spokesperson said today they will cooperate with all the authorities concerned. 
 
"A compliant and ethical corporate culture, which includes adhering to laws and industry regulations in all jurisdictions in which we do business, is integral to our success.  The company, which had five models in top-10 selling cars in 2014-15, saw compact model <keyword id="1964178" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Celerio">Celerio</keyword> enter the list at the seventh position in 2015-16. 
 
Besides, volume share of the company in top-10 models has shot up to 73 per cent with six of its models accounting for 10,29,639 units out of a total of 14,19,768 units sold in the fiscal he company's volume share in top 10 stood at 68 per cent in 2014-15 with sales of 9,12,415 units. 
 
As per the data, the company's Alto, Dzire, Swift and WagonR were the first, second, third and fourth biggest selling models during the fiscal. 
 
The company sold 2,63,422 units of Alto during 2015-16 compared with 2,64,492 units in 2014-15. 
 
It was followed by compact sedan Dzire, with 2,34,242 units sold. The company had sold 2,10,649 units of the sedan in 2014-15. 
 
ompact hatchback Swift continued to hold on to the third position during the fiscal with 1,95,043 units. Swift sales stood at 2,01,338 units in the previous fiscal. 
 
Wagon R with 1,69,555 units sold during the last fiscal, retains the fourth position in passenger car segment. MSI had sold 1,61,250 units of the hatchback in 2014-15. 
 
Its compact model Celerio also made it to the top 10 for the first time. It stood at 7th position with sales of 87,428 units during the fiscal. 
 
It dislodged Hyundai's compact car Eon from the seventh position. MSI's van Omni retained its ninth position with sale of 79,949 units in 2015-16. It had sold 74,686 units in 2014-15. 
 
Rival Hyundai's two models -- Grand i10 and Elite i20 also made it to the top ten list. Grand i10 sold 1,26,181 units during the fiscal. i20 stood at sixth position with 1,04,841 unit sales during the 2015-16 fiscal. 
 Mahindra's SUV Bolero stood at 8th position with 81,559 units while <keyword id="20630" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Honda">Honda</keyword> Cars mid-sized sedan City stood at 10th slot during the fiscal with 77,548 units.

Six Maruti models make it to the top 10 cars list in 2015-2016

According to media reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (<keyword id="6354572" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CBI">CBI</keyword>) has questioned former Prime Minister <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> in a case related to the allocation of the <keyword id="1928982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Talabira-II-coal-block">Talabira II coal block</keyword> in Orissa to Hindalco in 2005. Manmohan Singh was in charge of the coal ministry at that time. 
 
Various media reports suggest that a team of CBI officers went to Singh’s residence and enquired him about two letters — dated May 7, 2005 and June 17, 2005 — that were sent to Singh by industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla. In the letter, Birla had requested to allocate the coal block to Hindalco. 
 
Earlier, a special CBI court had refused to accept a closure report filed in the case. It had also asked the CBI to examine the role of the former Prime Minister. “I am of the considered opinion that before the matter is examined further as to what offence, if any, stands committed or by whom the same has been committed, it will be appropriate that the then minister of coal be first examined qua various aspects,” Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar had said. 
 
The court had also noted that the letter written by Hindalco chief Birla “certainly raised eyebrows.” It further added that “The number of reminders which were sent by the PMO, as well as repeated telephonic requests seeking an early response from the coal ministry raises grave shadows of suspicion.” 
 
“There are certain circumstances which need to be elaborated and explained, especially regarding the manner and the circumstances under which the matter was taken up in the PMO or under what circumstances the recommendations of the 25th screening committee were set aside even though it already stood approved,” the court had said.

CBI Questions ex-PM Manmohan Singh

As the state goes to polls next year, the biennial investors' summit will present the state as an ‘engine of India's incredible growth story under <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>’. 
 Preparations have already begun for the summit, which will be held January 10-13. <keyword id="6435171" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bureaucrats">Bureaucrats</keyword> from <keyword id="6354766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> are already going around the world, meeting investors in 23 countries to attract investment in aerospace, defense, petrochemicals and food processing under a more liberal FDI policy announced this year. The summit is also likely to have an interactive session of investors with <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword>. 
 "The business policy announced in May, offering several incentives such as capital subsidy, interest subsidy, <keyword id="771283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="VAT-reimbursement">VAT reimbursement</keyword>, freight subsidy and power tariff incentive, is expected to attract potential investors," a senior official, who did not wish to be identified, told ET. 
 
The summit will cover seminars regarding ease of doing business, public-private partnership in infrastructure and urban development, international development finance, innovation, startups and entrepreneurship, and smart villages. 
 It will also have a Nobel laureates' me in which more than 10 <keyword id="52659" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nobel-prize">Nobel Prize</keyword> winners from science are expected to participate. A fashion show on khadi and handlooms will be part of the event too. 
 
As per the officials, the delegates touring the world will be bringing the recent policy interventions of the NDA government and state government in Gujarat into the light. 
 "Our roadshows in both India and Canada have evoked a lot of interest among investors. They are keen to come to India. This will create opportunities for our youth," said <keyword id="2256559" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Lal">Bharat Lal</keyword>, Gujarat government's Delhi-based resident commissioner. "The focus this time is not just on attracting the best investment but also bringing good technology to India," <keyword id="193875" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Rupani">Vijay Rupani</keyword> told ET. 
 
According to officials, bureaucrats that are on the tour to find sponsors, have met head of several fortune 500 companies till now. New areas like waste management, pension funds and energy are attracting the investors. 
 
"The 'Make in India' initiative has seen a large number of small industrial units come up, and under this Gujarat has received close to Rs 85,132 crore of investment under 'Make in India'. Gujarat is next only to Maharashtra in the number of IEMs (industrial entrepreneurial memorandums) and next only to Karnataka in the amount of investment," an official told ET. 
 
Another official said that 100% FDI is permissible in the chemicals sector in India and manufacturing of most chemical products is de-licensed in Gujarat. "This is helping us attract a lot of companies in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector," he said. 
 
"Gujarat has received 22 licences out of 121 for defence equipment manufacturing in the past 18 months - the highest in India. Also, the country's first aviation park is to come up in Gujarat to serve as a one-stop destination for aerospace," he further added.
