Brace yourself for an extended summer season and scanty rainfall along with rise in prices of food items this year as the Australian Meteorological Department predicted on Tuesday that the tropical Pacific was in early stages of the El Nino weather phenomenon. 
 The bureau’s current observations state that India's south-west monsoon will be deficient and it has already been predicted by the <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword> in April, as per an Economic Times report. 
 
El Nino refers to the warming of Pacific waters and is seen as having a wide-ranging impact on global weather. 
 This comes as bad news for India as the <keyword id="390879" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="monsoon-season">monsoon season</keyword>, which runs from June to September in the country, is the main source of water for the agriculture sector. This will affect the <keyword id="2848024" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Agriculture-based-industries">agriculture-based industries</keyword> and the food industry. 
 
In the wake of poor rainfall last year and unseasonal rains and snowfall in recent months, India's revival plans and economic growth will also be hampered. 
 
According to the Australian weather office, the El Nino Southern Oscillation ( ENSO) indicators have shown a steady trend toward El Nino levels since the start of the year. The temperatures of sea surface in the tropical Pacific Ocean have also exceeded El Nino thresholds recently. 
 
Moreover, such changes are also supported by warmer-than-average waters below the surface which will worsen the weather condition. 
 
Trade winds have remained consistently weaker than average since the start of the year. "These indicators suggest the tropical Pacific Ocean and atmosphere have started to couple and reinforce each other, indicating El Nino is likely to persist in the coming months," the Australian weather office said. 
 
International climate models surveyed by the bureau indicate that tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures are likely to remain above El Nino thresholds through the coming winter and at least into spring.

There is also a 'yellow alert' forecasting heavy rains in and around Mumbai and Thane. Indians have a clutch of festivities starting from Dhanteras on Friday to Bhaubeej on Tuesday (October 29), with Diwali and Lakshmi Puja in between. The Met Dept has also warned the coutnry's fishermen to not venture out into the sea on Saturday and Sunday.

Monsoon will hit the Kerala coast by May 30," DS Pai, head, long range forecast, <keyword id="6355166" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department">India Meteorological Department</keyword>, told the Economic Times. According to the <keyword id="57032" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Met-office">Met office</keyword>, conditions were conducive for the advancement of monsoon into Arabian sea, Maldives, Comorin area and some more parts of Bay of Bengal during next two days. GP Sharma, V-P-meteorology, Skymet Weather Services, said: "The monsoon progress has been stuck till Hambantota in <keyword id="2871404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka-and-Bay-of-Bengal">Sri Lanka and Bay of Bengal</keyword> since the past few days. In the next 24-48 hours we can expect it to pick up," he said. Moreover, light rain and thunder showers continue to lash the southern part of India apart from the coastal belts of <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> and Karnataka. 	But people across north and central India would not get any relief from the hot winds till the weekend. "Heat wave conditions will continue with temperature 2-7 degree above normal over most parts of the country. Under the influence of a western disturbance, we can expect some light spell of rains along with thunderstorm over north India," said Sharma. People should be better prepared to face severe heat wave conditions in coming days at some places in Odisha, <keyword id="6360371" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jharkhand">Jharkhand</keyword>, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Chhattisgarh.

This increase in rainfall will boost planting of crops that had lagged behind so far, and replenish water reservoirs that irrigate fields and feed hydropower plants, according to a news report in The Economic Times. 
 However, it would be premature to celebrate as the weather office expects a shortfall of 12% in the monsoon's often-erratic, four-month <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> from Kanyakumari to Kashmir that delivers 75% of India's annual rain. 
 Rainfall was 76% more than normal in the past 24 hours, accelerating from an excess of 46% on Saturday and 22% on Friday. The turnaround has been dramatic in the oil seed growing regions of central India, where rainfall since June 1 was 31% in deficit on June 10, but is now 12% higher than normal. The region received three times the normal rain in the past day. The monsoon has now covered entire Maharashtra, and extends up to Surat, <keyword id="45327" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raipur">Raipur</keyword> and Darjeeling. 
 
The good news is that it is poised to extend to more areas in a few days, the India Meteorological Department said in its latest forecast on Sunday.

 The weather office expects the rainfall to continue in the days ahead. Rainfall is expected in many cities including Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Indore, <keyword id="6355556" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhopal">Bhopal</keyword>, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat, Lucknow, Kanpur, Guwahati, Tezpur and Shillong. The revival of rainfall will boost crop planting, which was 9% below last year's level on Friday. Officials told the ET that this was likely to change soon. 
 
"When rainfall comes after a dry phase, farmers quickly plant crops and make up for the lost time. The recent increase in rainfall is very favourable," an agriculture ministry official told the financial daily. So far farmers have planted rice on a bigger area than last year, but pulses, coarse cereals and cotton sowing has declined, compared to last year.
