<ul class="summary-list"><li>Christian Salafia, a 51-year-old semi-retired American, moved to South Africa in 2021.</li><li>He said he fell in love with the country, its people, and its way of life while visiting in 2020.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Christian Salafia, a former US Navy engineering laboratory technician and cyber and information security consultant who moved from Florida to South Africa in 2021.The following has been edited for length and clarity.I moved to South Africa for my now-wife three years ago. It's the best decision I've ever made.Back in late 2019, early 2020, my then-girlfriend Kim and I had known each other for years on Facebook, but it was always "Happy Birthday," nothing more interactive than that. Then she invited me to South Africa.I needed to renew my passport, and she needed to renew hers. So, we said, "Whoever gets theirs first travels first." Hers came quicker, so she came out to the US in February 2020, just as Covid was starting to make noise around the world.We spent 10 days together, and I thought, "This is probably going somewhere, so next time, I'll come out to South Africa and see what life is like out there."Three days after she went home, the world shut down. So, I didn't get to come out until November 2020.When I finally came out to South Africa, I absolutely fell in love with the country.<div type="image" title="Christian Salafia and his wife Kim on his first trip to South Africa in November 2020." height="1500" width="2000" msid="114171029" hostid="261" sizebytes="198522"></div><h2 id="f8e98469-471d-40f8-a9f3-4ba18e4d9083">Discovering South Africa</h2>When I stepped out of the plane for the first time in South Africa, I felt immediately relaxed.One of the first things we did on my first trip was have lunch on the beach, with Table Mountain just a few kilometers away. I remember standing there looking over the Atlantic, Table Mountain on my left, soaking in the scenery.We stayed at a hotel resort, which is about four hours away, and saw the wide open spaces with the rolling hills and the animals just roaming around. It just feels so unspoiled.At the time, I spent two weeks and an additional two weeks because I contracted Covid before I could go home. We came back to the US in December 2020, and she stayed through New Year.<div type="image" title="Christian Salafia and his wife Kim at his house in Tallahassee, Florida, in December 2020." height="1500" width="2000" msid="114171030" hostid="261" sizebytes="115954"></div><h2 id="c3f5169c-afa1-40c6-9420-69c296551833">Building a new life</h2>I called my daughters — I have two adult daughters — and asked, "How would you feel if your dad decided to move to South Africa?"My daughter said: "Does she make you happy?" And I said: "Absolutely." And she goes: "Go, have fun."And so, in August 2021, I came out here with three suitcases — I had sent two boxes — and built a new life halfway around the world.<div type="image" title="Christian Salafia and his wife Kim when he moved permanently to South Africa in August 2021." height="1500" width="2000" msid="114171028" hostid="261" sizebytes="159136"></div><h2 id="e15a037b-6146-4f4f-8f6f-2324b74331df">It's easier to achieve the American dream here</h2>Before I left the US, I was making close to six figures, and it was still very stressful to make sure bills were paid and to wonder whether I was going on vacation.But here, through the lower cost of living, we're able to have the life that most Americans think is the American dream.We're in a very nice house in the Winelands, and we have a car. I'm now semi-retired; I get a Navy disability pension and am a cyber and information security consultant.We go on vacation. we can go on nights out and go to the theater and the opera. In the years since you've been here, you've been very relaxed."<h2 id="3bfcc1eb-dd59-457c-8c6d-174ecd660228">Living a simpler life</h2>I think what people don't understand about being an expat and living in a developing country is that it's a much simpler life.You don't feel rushed anywhere, and it allows you to be fully present all the time. There is the joke that Cape Town is called the "Mother City" because it takes nine months to get anything done.The food is amazing. You can tell everything is natural and not processed, and that just makes food better.In the first couple of years I was here, load-shedding was brutal, with days where we were without power for 8-10 hours a day.The memes and jokes that floated around social media, from everyday South Africans to even the ad guys at Nando's, were priceless.Everyone here knows South Africa has its problems — electricity, water, corruption, and crime — but it doesn't seem to faze anyone.They don't let it get them down or make them angry and bitter.Even meals here are an event. You show up at people's houses at 2 p.m.; you don't eat until 8 or 9 o'clock at night. It's an all-day thing.It's the same thing in a restaurant. If you go out to breakfast, you can expect to spend a couple of hours.<h2 id="eb6a7143-5631-4172-a229-1f38add814b0">I'll never move back to the US</h2>I miss my kids, family, and friends. But I have no regrets. I don't think I'll ever move back to the US because it's too busy and too stressful.My wife and I want a simple life. We want to enjoy it and not feel like we're working our tails off just to survive.If I had to give one piece of advice to anybody who's looking to move out of the US, it'd be to not look to Western developed countries first. Look to the more developing countries.I had this conversation with friends of ours a couple of months ago who also emigrated here, one from the UK and his wife from Romania, about where we would go if we ever left South Africa.Not one of us chose a developed country or to go back to where we came from. Instead, it was South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Botswana, and Central America.They're culturally richer, and if you can work remotely, choose someplace that is different.Take the risk. Be bold. Don't trade one developed nation for another. Go and explore the world.

As <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s <keyword id="19916774" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="exports" source="keywords">exports</keyword> in the first quarter of 2024-25 (April-June) crossed the $200 billion mark, the government has expressed its optimism about reaching its full-year target of $800 billion. "We are quite optimistic and it gives us optimism that we'd be crossing our <keyword id="19944038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD" source="keywords">USD</keyword> 800 billion of trade this year," Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Monday while releasing India's trade data for June. India's overall exports, merchandise and services combined in the month of June were to the tune of $65.47 billion, a 5.4% rise on a yearly basis, commerce ministry data showed. Same month last year it was at $62.12 billion. In break up, <keyword id="22419320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports-of-merchandise-goods" source="Orion">exports of merchandise goods</keyword> rose from $34.32 billion to $35.20 billion, and exports of services rose from $27.79 to $30.27 billion. In May, merchandise and services exports combined were to the tune of $68.29 billion, a 10.2% rise on a yearly basis. The country's <keyword id="19933566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="keywords">imports</keyword> too increased year-on-year in June, data showed today. The same was the case in May. The overall imports, both merchandise and services combined, increased from $69.12 billion to $73.47 billion, a rise of about 6.3%, in June. In the recently concluded financial year 2023-24, India registered record exports at $778 billion. In 2022-23, the country exported goods and services combined at $776.3 billion. In break up, services exports rose from $325.3 billion to $341.1 billion in 2023-24. Merchandise exports though marginally declined from $451.1 billion to $437.1 billion. Among various steps the government took was to launch a <keyword id="8870884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Production-Linked-Incentive" source="Orion">Production Linked Incentive</keyword> (PLI) scheme in varied sectors, including electronic goods, to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, enhance exports, integrate India into the global supply chain and reduce dependency on imports. These seemed to have reaped dividends. China, Russia, Iraq, <keyword id="19908927" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uae" source="keywords">UAE</keyword>, and Singapore were among the countries where India's exports in the just-concluded financial year have risen substantially, though with a low base. The other countries in the Top 10 list are the UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, and <keyword id="19899437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="south-africa" source="keywords">South Africa</keyword>. Overall imports declined from $898.0 billion in 2022-23 to $853.8 billion. Both merchandise and services exports declined during the financial year. Overall trade deficit significantly improved from $121.6 billion in 2022-23 to $75.6 billion in 2023-24.

In the ODIs, vice-captain and star batter <keyword id="19918734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smriti-mandhana" source="keywords">Smriti Mandhana</keyword> shone brightly with two hundreds and a fifty in three matches, while Harmanpreet found her feet with a hundred in the final ODI. The only jarring note of that triumphant run might have been the shoddy form of opener Shafali Verma but she allayed the concerns with a fiery double hundred, the quickest in women's cricket, in the one-off Test here. Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh too have shown sparks of regaining their touch, and these batters occupy the first five places in India's run-makers' list in the shortest format. So, the team management will eye a flawless outing from this quintet against South Africa, who are coming off a less than satisfactory outing against the Lankans at home in the T20Is. India's bowling too looks very strong on paper, as pacers Renuka Singh, Pooja Vastrakar and Arundhati Reddy have been on the money, while spinners Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Asha Shobana and Shreyanka Patil present a formidable force. From a South African perspective, they will depend heavily on skipper Laura Wolvaardt for runs up the order and early momentum. Wolvaardt showed her prolific side slamming a century each in the ODIs and in the one-off Test. The opener's form will be a crucial factor if SA want to win a T20I series since January last year when they prevailed in a home tri-series also involving India and the West Indies. "We have played a lot of good cricket in patches, but to narrow it down, we have to be more consistent," all-rounder Chloe Tryon had mentioned in the pre-match press meet. But the tourists can't lean on Wolvaardt alone as they need runs from Marizanne Kapp, Sune Luus, Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits. Nonkululeko Mlaba and Masabata Klaas, Nadine de Klerk and Ayabonga Khaka will have to be at their absolute best against this Indian batting line-up. The Proteas will also hope that they can get a few overs from the experienced Kapp, who has not bowled in the series so far as she is recovering from an injury. According to the WCA, the sample size for this year's survey was around 330 professional players from 13 different countries, with the majority of them being current internationals. There is a higher proportion of female respondents in 2024. In the current edition of the T20 World Cup, the much-awaited clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan garnered a staggering 256 million viewing hours in India alone.

Without belittling the poised run of the Proteas, Afghanistan have been the revelation of this ICC showpiece. They found life and fighting spirit to rise above the ravages of war back in their country, best exemplified by an astounding win over 2021 winners Australia, whom they had never beaten before. But all of it can come to nothing if they falter at the Brian Lara Academy, a venue named after the West Indian legend who has supported Afghanistan to the hilt. The Afghans are a skilled set of cricketers, on whose back the team rose brilliantly from the low-tier obscurity of the early 2000s. So, they are not unfamiliar to intense competition and T20, more than any other format, offers them the chance to challenge the big brothers. But they have never competed in the semifinal of a World Cup, and the Afghans now need to control their nerves to overcome a fancied opponent. Head coach Jonathan Trott affirmed his side was not perturbed by the big occasion. "We go into the semifinal with no scarring or no history. This is uncharted territory for us. But, by no means, do we feel like we're going into the semifinal just to compete. "We're there to win the semifinal. We've beaten some major teams," Trott said after the win over Bangladesh. South Africa's scars also run deep but they are purely of cricketing nature. In the past, the Proteas have assembled some high-velocity squads but never managed to enter the title round of a T20 or 50-over World Cup after their re-admission into world <keyword id="19919646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cricket" source="keywords">cricket</keyword> in 1991. To change that long-running show of misfortune, South Africa need to tame not just Afghanistan but also the demons in their own minds. The signs have so far have given hope. But here, they have notched up victories as close as one-run (vs Nepal), four-run (vs Bangladesh) and three wickets (vs West Indies). South Africa of old could have bungled in those situations, but Aiden Markram's side has displayed remarkable fortitude. They seem to have escaped the hackneyed C-Word. Experienced left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj explained his team's run in this World Cup. "If you look at previous World Cups, the small moments, we haven't really won. It's good to see that all the games have come really close and we've found a way, so it's building the character within the team. "It prepares us for certain opportunities that we could get and cross over the line in those small moments. These are things that we've never done before. So, it's good to see us getting into that," said Maharaj. His words offer a true reflection of the collective effort South Africa have made here. There is only one South African player in top-10 batters' list. Quinton de Kock is placed sixth with 199 runs from seven matches, while none of their bowlers feature inside the first 10. But here they are, playing in the semifinal and they will have to negate those small, key moments against Afghanistan, perhaps in the next match too. For once, South Africa might not feel overwhelmed by that thought. If Afghanistan too can keep their heartbeats in check, a classic for the ages seems well on the cards. South Africa, Afghanistan look to rise above deep scars to seal T20 WC final berth

India's real GDP growth accelerated to 8.4 per cent year over year in the October-December quarter of 2023, up from upwardly revised prints of 8.1 per cent in July-September and 8.2 per cent in April-June. The global rating agency Moody's attributed India's firm growth primarily to solid capital expenditure, defying private consumption which remained "sluggish" amid still-weak rural demand. On the supply side, an 11.6 per cent surge in manufacturing output and strong service sector activity more than offset a decline in agricultural output in India, it said. Even so, it said high-frequency indicators, including expanding <keyword id="20905252" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="purchasing-managers" source="keywords">Purchasing Managers</keyword>' Index (PMI), rising auto sales, consumer optimism and double-digit credit growth, suggest that the economy's strong October-December momentum carried into January-March this year. "Some of the large emerging market (EMs) countries stood out in 2023 for their resilient economies amid high-interest rates, exchange rate volatility, subdued capital flows and muted external demand. This year, we expect growth to slow across several major EMs as the economies transition to a post-pandemic steady growth path," Moody's said in its Macro Monday report, chaptered 'G-20 emerging markets are poised for growth stabilization'. In its recently published <keyword id="20905253" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-macro-outlook" source="keywords">Global Macro Outlook</keyword>, it forecasted G20 emerging market growth to stabilize around 4.0 per cent in 2024 and 2025, down from 4.7 per cent in 2023 as global monetary policy gradually normalises. On an annual basis, domestic demand was the primary engine of growth in several G20 emerging markets. "We believe growth cycles in India and Indonesia are at their peak, Brazil and Mexico are likely past their peak, and <keyword id="19899437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="south-africa" source="keywords">South Africa</keyword>'s growth has likely troughed. Nevertheless, we expect relatively stable growth at close to potential in 2024 and 2025 for most G-20 EMs." On the policy side, the rating agency expects continuity after the general election in April-May and continued focus on infrastructure development. It forecasts India's real GDP to grow about 6.8 per cent in 2024 and 6.4 per cent in 2025, from 7.7 per cent in 2023. India's GDP grew at a massive 8.4 per cent during the October-December quarter of the current financial year 2023-24 and the country continued to remain the fastest-growing major economy. The Indian economy grew 7.8 per cent and 7.6 per cent during the preceding two quarters - April-June and July-September. The strength of domestic demand has driven the economy to a 7 per cent plus growth rate in the last three years. India's economy grew 7.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 8.7 per cent in 2021-22, respectively. In the next three years, India is expected to become the third-largest economy in the world, with a GDP of USD 5 trillion. India can aspire to become a USD 7 trillion economy in the next six to seven years (by 2030), India's finance ministry recently asserted. (ANI)

In a straight spell of nine overs, Siraj picked a career-best 6 for 15 as the South African batters made a beeline back to the dug-out, unable to counter the disconcerting bounce and the movement, both inward and outward, that he extracted off the surface. It was also South Africa's lowest total in <keyword id="9400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="test-cricket" source="Orion">Test cricket</keyword> since their readmission into international cricket in 1991. Before Siraj's special effort, the only Indian in country's 92 year Test history to take five wickets before lunch was left-arm spinner Maninder Singh, who achieved the feat against Pakistan in Bengaluru back in 1986-1987. Having been pilloried for conceding 400 plus runs in the heavy defeat at the Centurion, even the biggest of Indian supporters wouldn't have envisaged such a roaring comeback from the bowlers. Siraj kept the ball on fuller lengths between 4-6 metres and with bounce got most balls to jag back in. From the other end, Bumrah hit the back of length area as Rohit set completely attacking fields, albeit of different nature. When Siraj bowled initially, there was a leg-slip placed while for Bumrah, Rohit himself stood at short leg. The procession started with Aiden Markram going on a 'fishing expedition' to a delivery that moved in air and shaped away with the opener closing his bat face. Yashasvi Jaiswal took a fantastic catch at third slip to send back Markram. The stodgy Elgar played one to his stumps off Siraj who angled one across on fuller length, not giving him enough room to play the cut shot. Bumrah got young Tristan Stubbs into a tangle and the simple catch was gobbled up by skipper at short-leg. Tony De Zorzi's affinity to whip balls off the hips was exploited as he was caught down the leg-side. Unlike Centurion, there were plans in place and David Bedingham, who was fed on the backfoot in the first Test, was enticed to go for a drive on length and extra bounce did the trick. Once Marco Jansen edged Siraj to give him his fifth scalp, one knew that South Africa would have one of their most embarrassing mornings since return to international cricket in 1991.

In Temba Bavuma's South Africa, they have a team that has a crack fast bowling attack, which could make some of the young Indian batters look like cats on hot tin roof. For Yashasvi Jaiswal, it will be the first big test against a quality attack comprising Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee. There will be way more bounce than what he got in the Caribbean, and the variable nature of it will ask him probing questions.
