According to a report by Counterpoint Research, global 5G smartphone shipments recorded a 20% growth in the first six months of 2024 amid a decline in 5G smartphone prices. <h2>5G smartphone share crosses 50%</h2>For the first time, the share of 5G smartphones in the overall smartphone shipments crossed 50% in the first half of 2024. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113091114" title="Apple iPhone 16 to launch on September 9 – design, specs and everything we know so far" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “5G handset shipments have been growing steadily and with the increased availability of 5G handsets in the budget segment, the emerging markets have witnessed high growth in this segment,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst, Counterpoint Research. <h2>India emerges as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones</h2>India has emerged as the second biggest market for 5G smartphones behind <keyword id="19894886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="keywords">China</keyword> in the first six months of 2024, overtaking the US. As per the report, strong shipment of 5G devices from Xiaomi, <keyword id="19897758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Samsung" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and Vivo, among other brands in the budget segment helped fuel the rise of 5G devices in the country. “Other emerging markets also witnessed high growth in 5G handsets. Consumers in emerging markets are looking at 5G handsets as an upgrade to their devices, even in the lower price segments,” Singh added. India recorded the highest growth in 5G smartphone shipments among the top five countries. India’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 60% from H1 2023 to H1 2024. During the same period, China recorded a 14% growth, while the US recorded a mere 2% growth. Out of the total 5G smartphones shipped globally, 32% were shipped to China, followed by 13% each to India and the US. <h2>Apple leads 5G smartphone shipments</h2>With all of Apple’s smartphones being 5G enabled, the Cupertino tech giant leads the 5G race, accounting for over 25% of 5G smartphone shipments. Samsung comes in second with a 21% share. “ As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with increasing 5G penetration in lower price segments as well as increasing expansion of 5G networks, this trend will further grow. The ongoing global premiumization trend will further fuel this growth. According to our market outlook, 5G share will cross 57% in 2024 and 65% in 2025,” said Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research. India beats the US to emerge as the second-biggest market for 5G smartphones

The financial details of the deal have not been made public and the two companies reportedly plan on filing for approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) soon. <h2>Tata’s iPhone production in India to get a boost</h2>Tata already operates an iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka, which it acquired from Taiwanese giant Wistron last year. The company is building a second plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Forget just monetary 'bazooka,' Beijing is mobilizing the fiscal arsenal too," wrote Vishnu Varathan, Mizuho's head of macro research for Asia, excluding Japan, in a Friday note.He added that this is "as close as Beijing gets to guns blazing." It is battling multiple challenges, including an epic property crisis, high youth unemployment, and deflation.While Chinese authorities have introduced support measures earlier, its stock markets couldn't sustain gains convincingly following a massive <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/china-stock-market-meltdown-brutal-year-explainer-whats-happening-2024-1">meltdown</a> at the beginning of the year — a stark contrast to the hot money flowing elsewhere like the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-rally-sp500-recession-china-economy-interest-rates-2024-5">US, Japan, and India.</a>"Investors we spoke to generally have low conviction in the sustainability of the rally," acknowledged Bank of America analysts in a Friday note. However, the bank is more optimistic."Chinese financial regulators rarely encourage banks/financial institutions to increase leverage for the stock market but are doing so this time," the Bank of America analysts wrote, referring to Beijing's announcements of swap and re-lending facilities for stock buybacks.Furthermore, the US Federal Reserve has started cutting interest rates, which has historically benefited Chinese markets, they added.So even if Beijing's stimulus isn't enough for China's economy, a liquidity or leverage-driven market rally could still be "very powerful," they wrote.There's historical precedence, the Bank of America analysts added.The CSI 300 index more than doubled from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the first half of 2015 after Beijing used <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-mini-stimulus-2014-4">government stimulus</a> to arrest a slowdown. This preceded economic recovery that did not happen until the second half of 2016.<h2 id="a014ea6a-41e1-4a13-af63-bbc31fd09242">Top-down direction matters a lot in China</h2>Despite reservations about whether China's stimulus is enough — and if the current market rally is sustainable — it does look like Beijing is ready to do whatever it takes to revive its economy and markets.On Tuesday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.gov.cn/lianbo/fabu/202409/content_6976186.htm">People's Bank of China governor Pan Gongsheng</a> said at his stimulus announcement that authorities stand ready to inject more liquidity into the system if the support measures for swap and re-lending for share buybacks — collectively at $800 billion yuan, or $114 billion, prove successful."Indeed, while this isn't QE, moral suasion in China has somewhat more force than elsewhere. " wrote Global Data.TS Lombard economists Freya Beamish and Rory Green in a note on Thursday, referring to quantitative easing.After all, "Chinese companies live and die based on whether they are singled out as policy favorites, CEOs sometimes literally," they added.

In contrast, China's <keyword id="19931030" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy" source="keywords">economy</keyword> is now forecasted to grow at 5.0 per cent in 2024 and forecast moderately raised to 4.6 per cent from 4.5 per cent. The agency revised China's estimate due to policy tailwinds expected to extend into next year and a gradual improvement in private-sector sentiment within the country. However, the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) in its monetary policy has raised the GDP forecast of India from 7 per cent to 7.2 per cent for FY25. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said, "The real GDP growth for the current financial year 2024-25 is projected at 7.2 per cent with Q1 at 7.3 per cent, Q2 at 7.2 per cent, Q3 at 7.3 per cent, and Q4 at 7.2 per cent. The risks are evenly balanced." RBI Governor further said that, "The GDP growth projection, we have increased it from 7 per cent to 7.2 per cent and the inflation projection, the average for the year, we have retained it at 4.5 per cent as it was in the last MPC meeting." The <keyword id="22162558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SP-Global-Market" source="keywords">S&amp;P Global Market</keyword> Intelligence however has lowered the growth forecasts of US, Canada, Brazil, and Japan for 2024, while it has revised upward the forecasts for China, the Eurozone, the UK, and Russia. A pickup in overseas demand is seen as the key growth driver for the region in 2024.
