New VPN rules: ExpressVPN removes its servers from India, other companies may pull out too

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has given virtual private network (<keyword id="201519" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vpn" source="Orion">VPN</keyword>) providers another three months to comply with its new rules. The new rules that were supposed to be effective from June 27 require VPN service providers along with data centres and cloud service providers, to store information such as names, email IDs, contact numbers, and IP addresses (among other things) of their customers for a period of five years. The April 28 directive from India's cyber agency sought additional compliance requirements for all VPN providers whose users are in the country. Now, the new CERT-In direction will become effective on September 25. The agency has directed data centres, virtual private server (VPS) providers, cloud service providers and VPN providers that this specific aspect of the direction will become effective on September 25. "The extension of timelines for implementation of these Cyber Security Directions of 28th April, 2022 have been urged in respect of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for providing reasonable time for generating capacity building required for implementation of these Directions," said the CERT-In. Nearly 22 cybersecurity experts on Monday sent a joint letter to CERT-In and the Ministry of Electronics and IT, asking them to defer implementation of the contentious new Directions issued in April. "The Directions will have a negative impact on cybersecurity and privacy, and public consultation must be undertaken to ensure that the views of all stakeholders, including subject matter experts, are taken into account," the letter read. "Unchecked surveillance is a pressing concern in India -- one that is severely aggravated by the new data retention mandate in CERT-In's Directions, which impact millions of people connected in India,a said Raman Jit Singh Chima, Asia Pacific Policy Director and Senior International Counsel at Access Now, a non-profit. "Requiring service providers, including VPN providers, to log information that they may otherwise not collect, for five years or more, violates the right to privacy protected by the Indian Constitution," he added. Leading VPN service providers NordVPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN have removed their servers from India over the new directions. CERT-In later issued a set of clarifications, stating that the rules of maintaining customer logs will not apply to enterprise and corporate VPNs. The proposed amendments include the setting up of a grievance appellate committee that will be established by the government and will directly report to it. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Grievance redressal mechanism" comment="subhead" text="Grievance redressal mechanism">Grievance redressal mechanism</cmsannotation> The proposals mandate social media platforms to establish a grievance redressal mechanism that will allow users to request for removal of content or a user or complain against the removal of content or blocking of any user on their platform. The grievance officer will be required to acknowledge a complaint filed by a user within 24 hours and dispose of the complaint within 15 days from the receipt of the complaint. The grievance officer will also be required to acknowledge and perform directions given by the central government, the courts or any competent authority. If the grievance officer fails to perform this or performs this in an unsatisfactory manner, the user or the authority can approach the proposed Grievance Appellate Committee. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Grievance Appellate Committee" comment="subhead" text="Grievance Appellate Committee">Grievance Appellate Committee</cmsannotation> According to the proposed amendment, the government will constitute one or more Grievance Appellate Committees that will include a chairperson and other members appointed by the government. The Grievance Appellate Committee will dispose of the appeal within 30 days from the receipt of the appeal and the social media platforms will be required to comply with its orders. In a sense, this offers the government complete control over the content and users on social media platforms as the committee members will be appointed and answer to the government. The company reportedly wants to enter India by joining forces with a domestic firm with an intention to avoid the government’s scrutiny. ByteDance had shut operations in 2021, nearly a year after being banned in India. The company is now reportedly in talks with Mumbai’s realty major Hiranandani Group to strike a partnership. The Hiranandani Group runs data centre operations under the Yotta Infrastructure Solutions and recently launched Tez Platforms, a technology-led consumer services platform. The company is looking to invest INR 3,500 crore in the next two years in its latest venture. While the talks are at a nascent stage, the company is not looking to ruffle any feathers and has informally informed the central government about its intentions of re-entering India with a local partner. “There have been no formal talks with us yet. But we have been informed of the plans. As and when they come to us for approvals, we will examine their request,” a senior government official familiar with the matter told ET. It’s not clear if ByteDance is looking to partner with the Hiranandani Group’s new venture Tez Platforms or is hoping to store its data in the Yotta Infrastructure Solutions’ data centres. Storing user data locally has been one of the major demands of the government. “Critical user data should not be stored outside India. All apps and websites have either made provisions to store data locally or are making necessary changes to their data storage and processing policies. If they (Tiktok) come back, they will have to follow these norms,” an official familiar with the matter told ET. While officials in the government have confirmed that they have been informed about ByteDance’s plans, TikTok is not confirming its plans. The company informed ET that while the company is hopeful about resuming operations, it had no plans to resume operations in India, as of now. India was one of the biggest markets for TikTok and the company employed over 2,000 people in the country during its peak. While most of these employees have been let go, some of the employees were handed other responsibilities. Here’s how to download macOS Ventura and use features like Continuity Camera, Stage Manager and more

Find out in the review.</li></ul>Sony launched its first <keyword id="13888547" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neckband-speaker" source="Orion">neckband speaker</keyword> with <keyword id="1473348" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dolby-atmos" source="Orion">Dolby Atmos</keyword> — SRS NS7 in India earlier this year. Although it's not a fresh product category for the company, it is still new for its consumers in India and a first-generation product that has its niche referred to as personal entertainment. There are several neckband speakers available online, but most of them are unreliable China-made products and only a couple of them are from known brands. But the <keyword id="13162843" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sony-srs-ns7" source="Orion">Sony SRS NS7</keyword> is different as it comes with better features, a premium build quality and Dolby Atmos support, which means any comparison would be unfair. The neckband speaker is priced at ₹24,990, and it works best with Sony Bravia XR TV models because that's the only instance when the Dolby Atmos kicks in. Before we move on with the review, it's important to make it clear that it's not something you can buy because it's cool. It's primarily meant to be used with specific Sony TVs and any other use of the neck speaker does not justify the high price. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Subhead" text="Design">Design</cmsannotation> The SRS NS7 neckband is a unique looking gadget, that would definitely make people notice it. But since it's a personal entertainment device, you're unlikely to wear it in public. It looks like a big horseshoe, meant to be rested around the neck. While it sat well around my neck, it might struggle to keep in place for someone with a tinier neck and shoulders. Not that its audio performance will suffer, but it might get difficult to stay in place for certain body types. <div type="image" title="DSC_0010" msid="91472613" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Sony SRS-NS7 has a horseshoe like design&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>Some elements of the U-shaped design of the speaker are worth praise. First is the weight distribution, which keeps it intact at the right position even if you move around a lot. Another tiny design element is the thinner back, which not only ensures the weight is dropped on the front but also allows space for your head to bend it in any direction needed. Overall, you do not feel stuck or restricted to move. <div type="image" title="DSC_0009" msid="91472621" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Sony SRS-NS7 has a good quality mesh on the top&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div>Sony has used a good quality mesh fabric on the outer part and soft-touch plastic on the sides and inside. It's the same material we've seen on some Sony headphones and speakers in the past. The inside of the collar resides the microphone, mute and power/pair button on the right-hand side, and the volume controls on the left. If you grab them as you might your collar, the controls will fall under your left and right index fingers respectively. That’s a nice bit of ergonomic design, but it comes with a learning curve as you can't see what you're pressing unless you are used to doing it. I had to take it off to see the controls before operating it. <div type="image" title="DSC_0012" msid="91472647" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The power and mic button on the Sony SRS-NS7 is on the right&amp;lt;span class=&amp;quot;redactor-invisible-space&amp;quot;&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/span&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Weight-wise, I found it lightweight enough to wear for long hours comfortably, but I did not use it for more than 30 minutes even in over ten days of use. It's also splashproof, which means it can bear accidental water spillage but that doesn't make it safe from pools and showers. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Is the performance worth the premium?">Is the performance worth the premium? </cmsannotation> There are two things that Sony has always kept the standard - quality of build and audio. The same is retained on this product as well. The audio experience has all the bells and whistles to blow you away - be it clarity, soundstage, sound profile or loudness. <div type="image" title="DSC_0030" msid="91472660" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Sony SRS-NS7 performance is top notch&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> My first audio experience on the SRS NS7 was the song - Blinding lights by the Weekend. I was amazed, so much that I immediately passed it on to the friend next to me with a smile. As expected, he enjoyed it too. But the real experience was while watching a movie where it excels and gives a proper feel of a home theatre on your shoulder with sounds coming from left, right, front and back. The 360-degree surround sound is solid for cinematic background, and accurate but what's missing here is the room-filling boom of gunfire or a bomb blast as experienced on a premium home theatre setup. Watching a cricket or football match is another interesting experience where you can actually feel like you're sitting in the stadium among the crowd. <div type="image" title="DSC_0022" msid="91472695" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Sony SRS-NS7 has multi-directional speakers built-in the body&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> For gaming, I paired it with my OnePlus Q1 Pro TV running games through the PlayStation 5. While it would be unfair to say this neck speaker is better than headphones, I can safely say it does a good job at games like a first-person shooter where you need to know where the enemy is approaching from. It's somewhere in between good headphones and a home theatre system. Simply put, I can recommend these for gaming to those who don't like to block their ears while gaming and still don't want to miss the details. With this, you don't need to have features like passthrough or ambient mode to know what's happening around you. The downside is that despite having Atmos support, the NS7 doesn't let you use it if you are not using a Sony TV. So to get the most out of your ₹24,990 investment, you might also need to invest a lot more into a supported TV. It uses a wireless transmitter that comes in the box, which plugs into your TV with an optical-to-USB cable, and pairs to the neckband speaker wirelessly over Bluetooth. The transmitter supports TVs other than Sony Bravia XR models, but it won't minimise the audio latency as it will on Sony. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Battery performance">Battery performance</cmsannotation> The Sony SRS NS7 delivers around 12 hours of battery life on medium volume and around 6 hours at maximum volume. It gives around one hour of charge with 15 minutes of charging. This means you can easily get through an eight-episode series or a couple of movies. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Other features">Other features</cmsannotation> While the audio quality is great, Sony has also taken good care of the microphone performance. It is important as you would want to use it while gaming where a good mic is a must. The microphone works very well. Also, the multipoint connectivity allows it to connect to two devices simultaneously. So you can connect it to your TV and smartphone at the same time, and take calls on it with ease. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="subhead" text="Is it the future of personal entertainment and should you invest in it?">Is it the future of personal entertainment and should you invest in it?</cmsannotation> The Sony SRS NS7 does give a glimpse of the future but I'm still unsure of the possible use cases for this. The most logical one I could think of is for those who live in flats or apartments where you can't blast the sound to have a theatre-like experience as it may be a problem for the neighbours. It's phenomenal to think that Sony has managed to find a way to deliver sound straight into the ear without covering them up. It's not the first to do, but it's certainly the best to do so. The downsides, however, are more than the benefits. It's as expensive as a mid-range home theatre system, which is a more sensible option if you live with a family and want to enjoy movies in groups. For music, it fails to match the precision of a headphone and the fullness of a big speaker.
