<ul><li>India will be launching its earth imaging satellite, Cartosat-3, tomorrow morning from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.</li><li>The launch will include 13 other nanosatellites from the US aboard the PSLV XL rocket.</li><li>The Cartosat-3 satellite is an upgrade to India’s Cartosat-2 ‘eye in the sky’ satellites.</li></ul>India is all set to launch its third generation ‘eye in the sky’ Cartosat-3, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota tomorrow. The Indian Space Research Organisation (<a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/pslv-c47-cartosat-3-mission/launch-kit-glance">ISRO</a>) will be using its trusted workhorse, the PSLV XL rocket, to place the satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Deemed PSLV-C47, it will be the PSLV’s 49th flight and the XL variant’s 21st launch. According to the agency, the satellite’s main use will be addressing the demands of urban planning, rural resources, coastal land use and monitoring land cover. Since the <keyword id="3703841" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cartosat-satellites">Cartosat satellites</keyword> are capable of providing high resolution pictures, they serve a dual purpose. They can also be used to defend India’s borders. Upgraded surveillance In September 2016, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/ISRO-to-launch-12-18-satellites-per-year/articleshow/52867943.cms">Cartosat-2C</a> helped Indian Army soldiers conduct <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Surgical-Strikes-First-major-use-of-Cartosat-images-for-Army/articleshow/54596113.cms">surgical strikes</a> along the line of control (LoC) by <a href="https://asiancorrespondent.com/2016/09/reports-india-used-eye-sky-destroy-terror-targets-pakistan/">providing</a> ‘Area of Interest’ (AOI) based images. That satellite could provide images that were 0.65 meters in resolution. The Cartosat-3 satellite, on the other hand, is supposed to be even more accurate with a resolution of 0.25 meters. It will also have adaptive optics, acousto optical devices, in-orbit focusing using micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and large area-light weight mirrors. ISRO expects Cartosat-3 to orbit the Earth for the next five years from 509 kilometers in space. Here’s what’s special about India’s Cartosat-3 launch tomorrow

 The RISAT-2B satellite will took off from the SHAR Range in Sriharikota — the same location used in April to launch India’s surveillance satellite, <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/update/01-apr-2019/pslv-c45-successfully-launches-emisat-and-28-customer-satellites">EMISAT</a>.

 This isn’t India’s first radar imaging earth observation satellite. It’s not even the second. It’s the third satellite in what ISRO promises to be multiple RISAT launches in the coming year. At least five, according to Sivan — a big step up from just two RISAT launches over the past ten years. The need for more surveillance isn’t limited to India’s borders on land, but also extends to the seas. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/2-of-asias-biggest-militaries-are-working-on-a-deal-that-could-give-them-an-edge-over-china/articleshow/66324453.cms">growing presence of China</a> in the Indian Ocean isn’t only a worrying factor for India but also for its neighbouring countries. But, a RISAT satellite can track ships in the can giving India the opportunity to head off any threats. Not just surveillance and reconnaissance Since a 615-kilogram satellite can monitor the Earth — come rain, come shine — it’s also useful in situations of disaster management. Where ordinary cameras depend on light, RISAT’s active sensor, or SAR, can observe the Earth without clouds or bad weather getting in the way. After the successful launch of the RISAT-2B, ISRO plans to launch the RISAT-2BR1, RISAT-2BR2, RISAT-1A and RISAT-2A satellites within the year. The first of these is expected in April, according to India’s apex space agency along with two other defence satellites. India launched its third 'eye in the sky' — and has five more on the way

<ul><li>India’s apex space agency announced on January 17 that it will be launching a border surveillance satellite.</li><li>The announcement comes six months after China and Pakistan launched the a satellite that will be able to monitor the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The CPEC runs through disputed land that both, India and Pakistan, claim belongs to them. </li><li>India’s satellite will be able to send high-resolution imagery from its borders to help the border guarding forces communicate more efficiently.</li></ul>India’s discomfort of the friendship brewing between Pakistan and China was evident as it announced plans to launch border surveillance satellites. The <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword>’s (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) announcement to launch a satellite that will pick up high-resolution imagery of its neighboring borders comes just six months after Pakistan launched its own remote sensing satellite. The Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1), which was bought from China, will be able to monitor the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — a part of which runs through Gilgit-Baltistan in Azad Kashmir or Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK). And, PoK is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-expresses-strong-opposition-to-china-pakistan-economic-corridor-says-challenges-indian-sovereignty/articleshow/57664537.cms">disputed</a> land. India claims that its been under Pakistan’s illegitimate control since 1947. While the <keyword id="397800" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-satellite">Indian satellite</keyword> will be launched ‘exclusively’ for country’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), meaning only the ministry will have access to its data. However, its implementation will be a coordinated effort between ISRO and India’s Ministry of Defence. The border security satellites aren’t only to fend against Pakistan, but China as well, with Aksai Chin — disputed territory between India and China — also lying along the country’s northern border. The images from the satellite will help the Border Guarding Forces (BGF) communicate more efficiently and give them a clearer picture of on-ground activity through high-resolution imagery. The task force report on ‘Space Technology in Border Management’ was approved by the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, on January 17. It highlights the short-term, mid-term and long-term plans for how India’s satellite technology will be implemented. ‘Space Technology in Border Management’ In the short run, the aim is to help the Border Guarding Forces (BGF). But, as things progress, the aim is to use the images to help the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) as well. Essentially, the government wants to create a ‘Central Archival Facility’ that will allow the Home Ministry to share images resources will other agencies as well. It will also link into the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) to provide navigation facilities. Once all of this is set up in the long run, it’s not only the difficult border areas that will be monitored but Naxal areas as well — also known as India’s ‘Red Corridor’ where there is an ongoing conflict between Maoist groups and the Indian government. In terms of space technology, India is bounds ahead of Pakistan having launched 104 satellites. But China has reportedly launched 250 satellites and most recently, successfully landed on the far-side of the moon.

India responds to China-Pakistan satellite launch with its own border surveillance satellites

The countdown for the November 7 launch of the Indian rocket, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C49 (PSLV-C49), carrying the country's radar imaging satellite and nine other foreign satellites will begin on Friday. "The 26-hour countdown for the rocket launch will start tomorrow (Friday) from the first launch pad. The rocket with 10 satellites is expected to lift off at 3 p.m. on November 7 from the <keyword id="6355143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sriharikota">Sriharikota</keyword> rocket port," a senior official told IANS. The proposed launch will be the first space mission for the Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) in 2020. The nine foreign satellites are from: Lithuania (1-technology demonstrator), Luxembourg (4 maritime application satellites by Kleos Space) and the US (4-Lemur multi mission remote sensing satellites). However, the primary passenger of the 44.5 metre tall PSLV-C49 will be the Indian radar imaging satellite EOS-01 (formerly RISAT-2BR2) with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that can shoot pictures in all weather conditions. The satellite can take pictures day and night and will be useful for surveillance as well as civilian activities. This time around, the ISRO will be using the PSLV rocket's DL variant that will have two strap-on booster motors. This rocket variant was used the first time to put into orbit Microsat R satellite on January 24, 2019. The PSLV is a four stage/engine rocket powered by solid and liquid fuels alternatively with six booster motors strapped on to the first stage to give higher thrust during the initial flight moments. S. Somanath, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), had told IANS earlier that three rockets were getting ready for the launch at the rocket port in Sriharikota -- the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C49 (PSLV C49), PSLV C50 and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). After PSLV-C49, the next one to fly will be PSLV-C50 with the GSAT-12R satellite. It will fly from the second launch pad, he added. "We are targeting PSLV-C50 sometime in December. It needs about 30 days to get ready for another launch after one launch," Somanath had said. The other Indian satellites that are ready for launch are GISAT, Microsat-2A and GSAT-12R. The launch of the GISAT-1 satellite slated for March 5 this year was postponed due to technical reasons a day before the launch. "The GISAT-1 satellite will be carried by a GSLV rocket. The GSLV rocket was dismantled after the launch was called off. The rocket is being refurbished. The rocket's cryogenic engine has been brought down and it is being readied again," Somanath had said. According to him, the GSLV carrying GISAT-1 is expected to fly after PSLV C50. Somanath also said that the ISRO has developed a Virtual Launch Control Centre to test the rocket systems at the rocket port in Sriharikota remotely from the Thiruvananthapuram-based VSSC. "With Covid-19 pandemic prevailing, the Indian space agency in order to reduce the number of people travelling to Sriharikota, has developed a Virtual Launch Control Centre at VSSC. As a result, the testing of various rocket systems is being done at VSSC," Somnath had told IANS. The physical launch control centre is located in the building, housing the Mission Control Centre in Sriharikota and the systems there have been replicated at the VSSC in the form of a virtual launch control centre. Countdown for India's first launch of 2020 with its radar imaging satellite onboard begins on Friday

Bengaluru, State-run <keyword id="7803427" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NewSpace-India">NewSpace India</keyword> Ltd (NSIL), the commercial arm of the space department, bagged orders to launch four foreign satellites for earth observation from <keyword id="6355143" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sriharikota">Sriharikota</keyword> spaceport in Andhra Pradesh, a top official said on Friday. "We have signed contracts with four foreign customers to launch four satellites in the earth's lower orbit using the PSLV and SSLV rockets of the Indian space agency <keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword> (<keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword>) from its spaceport at Sriharikota," NSIL Chairman G. Narayanan told reporters here. The top official, however, did not disclose names of the customers or their location due to non-disclosure agreements with them. "Of the four satellites, three will be launched using ISRO's polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) and one with its small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV). The spacecraft will be used for earth observation applications," said Narayanan, marking the company's two years of completion. The state-run NSIL was in the news recently for launching Brazil's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1 on February 28 from the spaceport on board ISRO's PSLV-C51 rocket along with 18 other satellites. Amazonia-1 is the optical earth observation satellite of National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil. In addition to these commercial launches, NSIL will launch two communication satellites for Indian customers offering direct-to-home (DTH) services and telecom operators offering broadband services using Ku-band transponders. "The two communication satellites, to be launched by ISRO from its spaceport, will be owned and operated by us (NSIL) for customers on commercial terms for revenue-generating services," said Narayanan but declined to name the customers claiming confidentiality. Unlike the now defunct ISRO's commercial arm Antrix Corporation, which has ceased to function after its deal with Multimedia Deval fell through, the 2-year NSIL is a wholly owned state-run of the department of space as a central public sector enterprise. NSIL has been formed with Rs 10 crore paid-up capital and Rs 100-crore authorised capital. The space department has provided Rs 700 crore in the budget for fiscal 2021-22 for investing in infrastructure and capacity building to make satellites, rockets and launch them on commercial terms. "We also plan to invest Rs 2,000 crore per annum over the next five years to ramp up infrastructure to build satellites and rockets, launch them and operate their services for domestic use," asserted Narayanan. The Rs 2,000-crore for investment per annum will be raised through a mix of equity and debt. "We will also ramp up our headcount by hiring about 300 more people for stepping up operations and prepare to launch more satellites and rockets," said Narayanan on the occasion. Going forward, the fledgling company will launch heavy satellites for space applications and observation in the earth's geo-synchronous orbit by state-run and private firms. "The company has generated Rs 300 crore revenue in the first year (2019-20) of operations, Rs 400-crore in the second year (2020-21) amid the Covid pandemic through launches and space-based services from ISRO's satellites," said NSIL Director for technology and strategy D. Radhakrishnan. During its first two years of operations, the company has launched 45 auxiliary customer satellites onboard ISRO's 4 PSLV missions, including Amazonia-1. ISRO's commercial arm bags orders to launch four foreign satellites as it looks to invest ₹10,000 crore over the next five years

It is also the most complex and advanced earth observation satellite that ISRO has built so far,” said ISRO chairman K Sivan after the launch. The Indian Space Research Organisation (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/heres-whats-special-about-indias-cartosat-3-launch-tomorrow/articleshow/72235988.cms">ISRO</a>) assembled the PSLV-C47 rocket in 5 segments, each weighing 45 to 50 tonnes, before catapulting it into space from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. The massive 44.4-meter tall rocket with a lift-off mass of 321 tonnes, heaved took from the Second Launch Pad at 9:28 am. At lift-off time, the weather was a little cloudy, wind speeds benign indicating good conditions for the launch, according to the ISRO announcer. The launch The first stage of the launch was initiated as the first of the four engines, PS 1, was ignited. At 37 kilometers of altitude, the four groundless rockets burnt out in 92 seconds and separated from the main vehicle. After 113.2 seconds, the second stage of the launch was initiated at 115 kilometers. At 161.1 seconds the launch vehicle entered closed-loop guidance, which means that the vehicle was now deciding its future functions by comparing its current location to the target conditions. At 267 seconds, the third stage was initiated and lasted 229 seconds. Before moving onto the fourth stage, the launch vehicle was given a coasting period of 115 seconds to achieve optimal ignition conditions. At 17 minutes, the fourth stage was shut off and the mission director announced optimal orbital conditions were met. A few seconds later, ISRO separated the Cartosat-3 satellite separated from the launch vehicle. Following which the MESHBED was launched into orbit. All of the satellites needed to be placed in similar but different orbits. So a gap of around 3 minutes was given to ensure that they don’t enter the same orbit at the Cartosat-3 or fourth stage of the launch vehicle. More about the payloads The third generation of Cartosat satellites, the Cartosat-3, is the ninth overall in the Carosat series. It weighs 1,625 kilograms and can click detailed images of up to 0.25 meters in resolution. "The realisation of Carosat-3 has witnessed a totally new development in the advanced technological area across the board, in all the domains -- right from the payload, the communications, the optical system, the sensors, and so on," said P. Kunhikrishnan, Direction of URSC after the successful launch. He added that the satellite is capable of very high data throughput. It is able to relay information back to Earth at speeds of 2.88 gigabits per second, a considerable improvement over its predecessor which only communicated at 6.40 megabits per second. The satellite also has terabits of solid state memory on-board. Cartosat-3 serves a dual purpose. It can monitor land usage for urban planning, rural resources, and the weather — but it can also help surveil India’s borders. In the past, area of interest (AOI) images from the Cartosat-2C satellite were used to track terrorist threats along the line of control (LoC). Twelve of the US satellites are earth observation FLOCK-4P nanosatellites and one is a MESHBED to test communications. These commercial satellites are being launched under an arrangement with New Space India Ltd (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO. Reportedly, the space agency will not charge anything to launch the satellite. The designers of the satellite work with a private organisation that deals in science and innovation — Space Kidz India. The startup organisation has also laid plans on creating another satellite — Vikramsat — that could be used for biological experiments in space. The communication satellite is planned for launch on Thursday (24 January) at 11:37 PM, along with MicrosatR — an imaging satellite for Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, ISRO tweeted. The satellite was built in just six days with in overall investment of nearly ₹1.2 million. However, it took nearly six years for the satellite-makers to understand the technology and its working, NDTV reported. India’s space agency is set to launch ‘Kalamsat’ — a 3D-printed satellite designed by Indian students

The four new <keyword id="1007409" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="heron" source="Orion">Heron</keyword> Mark-2 drones, which can be equipped with long-range missiles and other weapons systems, have been deployed at a forward air base in the northern sector, where Team witnessed their operations. The drones with satellite communication capability have given a long desired capability to the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword>, as its drones can operate at very long distances for close to 36 hours at a stretch and can also laser illuminate enemy targets from very long ranges to help fighter aircraft destroy them using their long-range weapons. "The <keyword id="18385593" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="heron-mark-2" source="Orion">Heron Mark 2</keyword> is a very capable drone. This is capable of longer endurance and has 'beyond line of sight' capability. With this, the entire country can be surveilled from the same place," the commanding officer of the drone squadron, Wing Commander Pankaj Rana, told ANI in an exclusive interaction at the base. He said the longer endurance also ensures that multiple missions can be flown and multiple sectors can be addressed in one mission itself. "The drone simply amalgamates into the Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance matrix of the Indian Air Force," Rana said. Highlighting the major strength of the drone, Rana said it can provide 24x7 surveillance of targets. Modern avionics and engines have ensured that the operational ceilings of the aircraft have been increased. He said the drone can operate in any weather and on any terrain to address its targets and complete the mission. "Flying from here, the drone can cover both the adversaries in the same sortie itself," Rana said while highlighting the major strengths of the latest unmanned machine of the force. Defence officials said the drones are capable of being equipped with weapons, and work towards weaponising them is in progress. The drones can be equipped with different types of weapons, as the original equipment manufacturers can equip it with air-to-ground missiles, air-to-ground anti-tank weapons, and bombs. Squadron Leader Arpit Tandon, who is a pilot of the Heron Mark 2 drone, said the new version of the Heron drones has multiple advantages over the previous versions, which started getting inducted into the IAF in the early 2000s. "The payloads and the onboard avionics of the Heron Mark 2 can operate at sub-zero temperatures and in any weather condition. This is helping the Indian Air Force achieve footprints over any type of terrain," he said. The Indian Air Force is also working on Project Cheetah, under which around 70 of the Indian Armed Forces' Heron drones are to be upgraded with satellite communication links and weaponised to meet the requirements of the armed forces. The Indian armed forces are also getting 31 Predator drones, which are in the high altitude, long endurance category and are helping the Navy presently to cover large tracts of the Indian Ocean region. India is getting a version of the drones that can be equipped with weapons and will have sensors for different roles in different terrains. Fifteen of these drones are to be operated by the Indian Navy, while the other two forces would be getting eight each. (ANI)

 The 61-km stretch of the India-Bangladesh border in the Dhubri, Assam district in eastern India will now be under the watch of India’s Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) — a project that uses high-tech solutions to guard terrain and riverine borders round the clock. So, it should also be pointed out that CIBMS is more than a ‘smart fence’. A smart fence is essentially a barbed fence with electronic systems to help detect movement. But, the CIBMS isn’t a physical fence at all — it’s only sensors that can detect movement in water, land or air. The issue with Assam’s Dhubri region is that its a riverine — the longest riverine border in the country mostly made up of the Brahmaputra river but also a little bit of the Gadadhar river — so putting up a fence isn’t exactly an option. Currently, they’re only using reconnaissance boats in the area to protect the border. Hence ,the CIBMS solution. Possible speedbumps There are two issues with employing a project like the CIBMS. One, is the <a href="http://tenders.gov.in/viewtenddoc.asp?tid=del816186&amp;wno=1&amp;td=TD">dependency</a> on vendors. Whenever private vendors get involved in a project, transparency is key. But, with the CIBMS project there’s a lack of clarity as to how vendors are supplying the technology. TATA Power SED, on of the vendors, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/can-cibms-alone-secure-the-indias-borders/articleshow/65722529.cms">states</a> that the technology for the CIBMS falls under the ‘Make in India’ program. And, the second major issue is the <a href="https://www.ciponline.org/images/uploads/1004_TBP.pdf">upskilling</a> of officers to actually run the system efficiently. Border guard forces are only posted to one location temporarily. So even if private firms are coming in to train the personel when the technology is deployed, the training won’t be useful when the existing officers get transferred and new ones come in. There’s also India’s <a href="http://www.indiandefencereview.com/spotlights/challenges-to-securing-indias-borders/">problems</a> with maintaining and operating the existing equipment that’s in place. Their optimum use has been hindered by the lack of infrastructure to support more complicated and energy consuming surveillance systems. There have been questions around the challenges facing power back-up of gensets and three-phase power supply. But, the upside is, the purpose of CIBMS is to eventually replace manual surveillance of international borders by electronic surveillance. This is the third CIBMS project to be inaugurated in India. Two similar projects were launched along the India-Pakistan border. It will take time to seal the entire border, but this project should help the <keyword id="166231" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Border-Security">Border Security</keyword> Force (BSF) deal with cross-border crimes and other illegal activities. India is going to use sensors to protect its borders where it can’t put up fences

<ul><li>India’s largest surveillance satellite so far, the Radar Satellite (<keyword id="997923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RISAT">RISAT</keyword>) 2BR1, is set to launch on May 22. </li><li>It is the third in India’s RISAT series of launches. </li><li>This will mean increased vigilance along India’s China and Pakistan borders. </li></ul>India is upgrading its spy satellite system by launching <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/india-to-get-another-eye-in-the-sky-on-may-22/articleshow/69192628.cms">another</a> ‘eye in the sky’ on May 22. The South Asian country’s new addition will be able to pierce through clouds, and capture ‘the real picture’ of its borders, amidst intensifying geopolitical tensions. The Radar Satellite (RISAT) 2BR1 is the latest addition to the RISAT series of India’s defensive satellites. This is an upgrade over its predecessors and adds to India’s surveillance capabilities. On one side, India will be able to monitor the Indian Ocean for Chinese naval ships more efficiently and, on the other, keep an eye on the Arabian Sea for Pakistani warships. Even Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the Line of Control (LoC) that runs between Pakistan and India will be under surveillance — day and night. RISAT 2BR1 is first of the five planned military satellites that Indian <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="space">Space</keyword> Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) has planned for 2019. This is an impressive record for ISRO, which launches one or two military satellites a year. Piercing the Clouds RISAT 1 and RISAT 2 are strong surveillance satellites in their own right. But RISAT 2BR1’s X Band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can pierce through the clouds, and has a resolution of up to one meter. Increased resolution means, it can decipher between different objects on the ground provided they’re at least a meter apart. RISAT 2, launched in 2009, was India’s first reconnaissance satellite, also known as spy or intelligence satellites. The original X Band SAR on board was a military grade sensor radar from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It was actually launched before RISAT 1, <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/Spacecraft/risat-1">officially</a> an agricultural satellite, in lieu of the 2009 Mumbai terror attacks which called for increased vigilance along the borders. Striking resolution Images from RISAT 2 are known to have played a role in <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/news/science/indias-eyes-in-the-skies-gave-images-for-surgical-strikes/articleshow/54598628.cms">conducting</a> the surgical strikes along India’s LoC in 2016, as well as the 2019 Balakot <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/air-strikes-hit-balakot-in-pakistan-initial-assessment-100-hit-sources/article26373318.ece">airstrike</a>. The indigenously manufactured X Band SAR on RISAT 2BR1 uses the motion of the radar’s antenna to scan over the area where the target is assigned. So, rather than use conventional beam scanning to capture an image, X Band SAR uses radar pulse calculations to create a spatial resolution. Larger the aperture, or longer that radar pulses take to return, the higher the image resolution. The RISAT 2BR1 will launch from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh abroad one of the variants of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

India’s largest ever ‘eye in the sky’ will take on its neighbours

Startup firm <keyword id="11179378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ig-drones" source="Orion">IG Drones</keyword>, which was born out of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) campus in Odisha's Sambalpur has developed a 5G-enabled drone that is capable of vertical take-off and landing. The drone named Skyhawk can be used in defence and medical applications, among other sectors. The drone can carry a 10 kg payload and has an endurance of around five hours. With Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) providing 5G services in the country, these drones can be controlled with much more precision and can be controlled from the command centre directly rather than being on the field. As it's a <keyword id="1247238" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vtol" source="Orion">VTOL</keyword> (Vertical Take-off and Landing), it can be operated from any terrain without the need for a conventional runway. With the addition of Artificial intelligence and thermal imaging capabilities, drones can be used in monitoring border intrusion and also during regular patrolling by the defence forces, according to the company. It is IP67 rated and can be controlled via a combination of NavIC + GPS navigational satellites which remain connected in the upper range of 50 to 60 in case of failsafe activation. "This has been developed keeping in mind the needs of the defence and medical sectors. We are making it in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> with an aim to take it to the world," said Sambit Prasad <keyword id="315823" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="parida" source="Orion">Parida</keyword>, the chief technology officer. The drone is also capable of operating through satellites in case an internet link is not available, Parida told ANI. "When it will connect several satellites, it will work with precision in medical services delivery and in defence. The drone, if operated at its peak speed, can cover almost 100 kms in 12-15 minutes," Parida said. According to <keyword id="16029878" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kc-sahoo" source="Orion">KC Sahoo</keyword>, Chief Administrative Officer of IG Drones, "For use by defence forces, it can give surveillance up to 100-200 kms per day. If someone deploys 20-30 drones, an area can be secured." Sahoo also reiterated that if 5G services are not available at any locations, they will be downgraded to 3G or 4g, or either latch on to satellites. The completion of the construction of the ship, which is called the VC11184 after the shipyard where it was built, marks the culmination of a five-year process. It is currently said to be undergoing harbour trials in Visakhapatnam as a precursor to a full-fledged trial in the sea. The main focus of the trial phase is to assess the efficiency of the ship’s surveillance hardware and tracking antennae. A nuclear missile shield The surveillance ship was built by the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), a technical intelligence agency that reports to the Office of the Prime Minister. Construction on the the ship began in 2014 as part of a concerted effort to build a extensive shield system in the event of nuclear missile attacks. It was built under the Make in India initiative. Constructed at a cost of ₹7.25 billion, details of the ship, including the full extent of its capabilities, have mostly been kept under wraps. However, it is reported to be one of India’s largest ocean surveillance ships, weighing around 15,000 tonnes and measuring 175 metres in length. The ship will be used for more than just tracking missiles from India’s enemies. It can also be used to detect spying satellites and monitor the reach and efficiency of India’s own missiles. The move to build the missile tracking ship is largely reactionary. There have been reports over the years of China selling and sharing missile technologies with Pakistan. Of course, the threat of a nuclear attack to India is very low, but nuclear competition with its immediate neighbours is very real, which is why its adopting a “better safe than sorry” approach.
